  • Dell Roadmap Leaked, Reveals Android Netbooks

Ok, so we know that Dell loves Android, but we didn’t know they love Android this much!  Android Central is reporting that a Dell product roadmap has been leaked and it features new Android goodies!  These goodies include the “Sparta” netbook tablet and “Athens,” a 0.9-kilogram “true netbook”, both of which appear to fall under the 11-inch category or so, with an ARM processor, optional 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth. There’s also the LG Pro, which looks to be the 7-inch Looking Glass ( I am totally getting this device!).

Something else interesting about the roadmap is it shows that the Dell Streak is headed for T-Mobile and Vodafone as rumored! Apparently, a Chinese version of the Streak is also in the works.

Remember though folks, this roadmap is subject to change! Nothing is set in stone.

  • Three Hardware Standards Android Handset Manufacturers Need to Implement

Since the debut of the T-Mobile G1 in October 2008, Android has grown exponentially.  The platform has progressed from 1.0 to 2.1, with high-end Android handsets being all the rage in recent months.

With the rapid growth of the platform we have seen many different pieces of hardware that  show off the range that Android operating system provides.  From the T-Mobile Huawei Pulse to the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, handsets have had screen sizes ranging from 2.8″ to 4.3″, different processors, and varying internal storage capacity.  Honestly, this is one of the great things about Android! Despite these differences, there have been some similarities, such as the  volume rocker, home button, back button, and search button (some of you may be asking why I did not include dialer button, but the Motorola Cliq XT and several other HTC handsets do not feature this.)

Before we get carried away with ourselves, the point of this post is not to discuss the similarities and differences in Android handsets, but to detail hardware standards, especially when it comes to buttons and switches.  Take a look to see what I think about this below.

    1. Mute/Silent Switch

One of the major gripes I have about the hardware on Android handsets is that there is not a quick way to silence the phone.  Sure, if someone calls me while I am in a meeting I can just hit the volume rocker or I can even get an app that silences the phone if it is face down.  This works.  With all this, I still wish there was a hardware switch to flip to make the phone silent. The only Android phone I know that has this to date is the Motorola Cliq.  Whenever my wife silences here phone it is very easy, switch it and boom.  All I am saying is it would be much easier if all Android handsets had this.  It is much more convenient and faster than unlocking the phone and turning the volume all the way down or pressing a widget.  I think this is needed.

    2. GPS /Maps Switch

The lack of a GPS/Maps switch on any Android handsets is something that needs to be changed.  In fact, I am unsure if any major handset(even the iPhone) has a button that turns on the GPS and opens up the Google Maps application.  Sure, you can unlock the phone and turn on Google Maps then place it in the car mount and go, that works great.  However, when driving or needing to get somewhere quickly, there should be a better, faster option.  If possible, it would be great to just flip a switch or push a button on a handset while it is in the car mount and Google Maps would open right up, GPS turn on, and you can speak your directions easily without fiddling with the screen.  Handset makers have camera buttons to open the camera application all the time, I can’t see it being to difficult to add a switch or button a GPS/Maps application.

    3. Camera Button

Speaking of the camera button.  It really is something nice to have isn’t it?  A colleague of mine who owns the Motorola Droid, simply loves the hardware button.  Honestly, I never really thought much about it, but when I used his Droid to take some photos, using the camera button was absolutely fantastic! One push and boom the camera is on.  Just like that.  I can’t tell you how many times my wife told me to take a picture and by the time I unlocked my phone and found the camera app, the moment was over.  I think Android handset manufactures should think long and hard about adding a standard camera button, it makes it much easier.

So that’s it from me.  Now the question is what standards, if any, would you like to see?  Let us know in the comments!

  • Dell Mini 5 With T-Mobile USA 3G Bands Hits FCC

It appears  that AT&T might not be the only carrier to get the Dell Mini 5 after all.  According to Engadget, a Dell Mini 5 with WCDMA Band IV in place of Bands II and V has been approved by the FCC (see document above).  In short, this means that a Dell Mini 5 is in the works which will work on T-Mobile’s airwaves instead of AT&T’s. There a chance Dell may have been inspired by Google and will be looking to take a route similar to that of the Nexus One.  Let’s hope so! Perhaps a CDMA Dell Mini 5 is also in the works? • Orange To Launch Android Handset Boston

Some Android news coming from across the pond.  European wireless carrier Orange has announced that it will soon be releasing an Android powered handset named Boston(seen in the picture above).  Manufactured by Foxconn, the new handset should land exclusively at Orange, while being expected to be put on sale with a price tag of only €1.00. Now that is cheap!

The Boston is said to feature a 3.2-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 480 x 320 pixels resolution, along with a 5-megapixel camera, and a Qualcomm 600MHz processor inside, coupled with 256MB of RAM, along with a microSD memory card for additional storage space. At the same time the new handset is expected to arrive on shelves with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR connectivity options, as well as with a built-in GPS receiver, which is meant to make it even more appealing.

The Boston is expected to ship with Google’s Android 1.6 operating system on board, which might not sound that great, though it seems that software updates are set to arrive after launch. I can’t wait to hear more about this phone, it looks very attractive.

So Android fans, any interest in this handset?

  • Froyo and Gingerbread Aim to End Android Platform Fragmentation

Engadget is reporting today that the Google is looking to tackle the growing problem of Android fragmentation head on with the next two installments of Android: Froyo and Gingerbread. You know, the kind of fragmentation that has users running four different versions of the Android OS on their smart-phones (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1).  Put simply, Google’s been iterating the core far faster than most of its partners have been able to keep up.

According to the Engadget Team, many of Android’s standard applications and components from the platform’s core will be made downloadable and updatable through the Market, much the same as Google Maps now is.  This process will take place over two major Android versions, starting with Froyo and continuing through Gingerbread. This way, just because Google rolls out an awesome new browser doesn’t mean you need to wait for HTC, Samsung, or whomever made your phone to roll it into a firmware update, and for your carrier to approve it.  If all of this happens, you will be able to download most things from the market! Sounds like a damn good idea to me!

Let us hope this comes true !

  • Google’s Nexus One Trademark Denied

Google’s application for the Nexus One trademark has been officially rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The application was denied because the patent application was too similar to a “Nexus” integrated voice and Internet product owned by the company Integra Telecom, which registered its trademark in December 2008.

What does this mean for Google?  Well, first off, this doesn’t mean they have to change the name immediately, but I have no doubt Google will challenge this ruling.  If they lose an appeal, the big G could license the brand name from Integra or they could change the name all together(all though this seems very unlikely).  Whatever happens, Android Guys will be here to deliver any news that we hear.

  • Tech Titan Tim Bray Joins Team Android, Promptly States Intentions

ZDNet is reporting that the man who helped create XML, Tim Bray, has joined team Android as a “developer advocate.” Bray himself made the announcement recently on his own blog.

Bray, who is as well known as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in some circles, will be the new public face of Android.  He is looking to help Android, along with the Big G, overcome marketing and legal challenges from Apple.  Bray will certainly be a welcome addition to the team.

In his own blog posting, Bray wrote this:

“Apple apparently thinks you can have the benefits of the Internet while at the same time controlling what programs can be run and what parts of the stack can be accessed and what developers can say to each other.

  • Android On Lockdown: AT&T Removes Best Parts of Android from Backflip

Well folks, if you haven’t heard by now, AT&T’s first Android Handset, the Motorola Backflip, has been locked down and crippled.  In doing this, AT&T has not only removed Google search, but disabled Android’s ability to install non-market apk files outside of the official Android Market by removing the option for BACKFLIP users to install applications from unknown sources.

Why this was done is unknown, but users will no longer be able to install apps purchased on alternative markets.  For developers that utilize the BACKFLIP, this will will also prove troublesome as they will be unable to test apps on the device. The app experience has truly been IPhonified.  Quite frankly, I am disappointed, but not really surprised as AT&T has attempted to control phones and apps within their realm for quite some time.

We know that AT&T is trying very hard to be a gatekeeper. We also know they are not a fan of open standards. What are your thoughts?  Would you buy  this phone? How far do you think this will this go? Did Apple have a role in this?  I know what I think and that is that you should not purchase this phone.  Sorry.
