    Amid concerns homicide investigations were being delayed due to a tight budget, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said he will deploy more officers to perform investigative and emergency functions but reduce other services that are not considered critical to public safety. "In the end, the way the public will feel it, there will be some reduced `nice-to-have’ services by the Los Angeles Police Department," Beck said. "Property-damage only traffic accidents don’t get investigated. Some of our desks won’t be open at night. You may not be able to get police reports in a timely fashion."

    Thousands expected to mourn fallen LAPD officer today

    Thousands are expected to converge on downtown Los Angeles to honor LAPD Officer Robert J. Cottle, killed March 24 in Afghanistan while on Marine Reserve duty. Cottle, 45, was traveling with three other Marines in the Marja region of the country, which has been the focus of an intense U.S.-led offensive against Taliban forces in recent weeks. Their armored vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, killing Cottle and another Marine and seriously wounding the two others, said LAPD Capt. John Incontro, who oversees SWAT operations.

    Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Legislation to Provide Greater Assistance to California Homeowners
    Tax Conformity Bill Also Promotes Growth in California Renewable Energy Projects

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today signed SB 401 by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), legislation that will bring much of our state tax policy in line with federal policy while specifically providing greater tax relief to struggling California homeowners who have sold their homes as short sales or modified their mortgage loans. This bill will also assist companies that are developing new renewable energy projects in the state that are financed by economic stimulus grants received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act).

    "This legislation is a great example of what we can accomplish when we work together to solve problems that affect Californians, and I applaud Senator Lois Wolk, Senator Ron Calderon, Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino for their work. It is important that we continue to provide all possible assistance to homeowners who were negatively impacted by the mortgage crisis, and this bill will provide them with necessary mortgage debt relief and protect them from thousands of dollars in unfair taxes," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "SB 401 will also help promote the growth of renewable energy projects in California by providing tax assistance to businesses to get their projects of the ground, which is good news for our economy."

    SB 401 extends the law providing mortgage debt forgiveness to homeowners who have already lost their homes due to declining home prices and cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars in taxes because the mortgage company forgave the remainder of the loan. This means that Californians who have sold their homes as short sales are allowed to exclude from taxable income the amount that was still owed to the mortgage company. The legislation, which increases the amount of mortgage debt forgiveness available, also applies to homeowners who have made loan modifications in 2009.

    The bill also assists renewable energy companies that are currently establishing the financing to build their projects in California. By designating federal economic stimulus grants received through the Recovery Act for renewable energy projects are not treated as income for tax purposes, this legislation will help companies move these projects forward and help their business thrive in the state.

    Know any good drinking songs? Sing ’em loud and sing ’em long — because more new studies back vitamin booze as one of the best ways to keep healthy and pain-free.

    Half the folks you meet on a barstool will tell you they’ve had a drink or two to dull the pain, and a new study finds that’s not far from the truth.

    We know that drinkers enjoy a lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis in addition to the great taste of their favorite beverage. But a new study finds that even patients who’ve already come down with RA can get a benefit — because booze can actually slow the disease.

    Swiss researchers examined the X-rays of 2,908 RA patients and found that the light and moderate drinkers had the least amount of joint damage over four years, according to the study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism.

    So if you’re still taking painkillers… you’re hitting the wrong bottle.

    Animal studies have also found that booze can beat arthritis as long as you keep it moderate. Load up on liquor, and you’ll pay the price — and not just in your joints. Most of alcohol’s benefits come undone once you start drinking so much that you’re known for it — and that includes those famous heart benefits.

    In fact, two more studies add to the overwhelming evidence that a good tipple is good for your ticker.

    The first study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, finds that moderate drinkers of any kind of booze — liquor, beer, wine or hooch — have the lowest risk of death from cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack and stroke.

    A second study in the same journal found that people who enjoy two drinks a day have a 22 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular-related conditions.

    So drink up, and enjoy every sip. It’s good for you.

    New drug aimed at cramps is a hormone-blocking nightmare

    It’s ladies’ night for Big Pharma, but they’re not out to buy you a drink.

    They want you to do the buying, gals — and the bottle they’re offering is filled with meds they hope you’ll take at a certain time of the month.

    Vantia, a British drug maker, says it’s testing a new hormone-blocking med that could help women beat a condition called dysmenorrhea, which is an awfully fancy way of saying "cramps." And they hope to sell it to up to 90 percent of all women of child-bearing age.

    But anyone who deliberately messes with her hormone levels is just begging for trouble — and risking agony far worse than the cramps.

    In this case, the hormone in question is vasopressin, which has been linked to menstrual cramps. But this hormone also regulates the water in your body — it basically makes sure you don’t dehydrate yourself every time you pee.

    The new drug, which doesn’t have a name yet, suppresses this hormone — and it doesn’t take much imagination to see how this one can go tragically wrong.

    And since the company is conducting its own experiments on this med, I don’t trust anything I read about it.

    I’ve been around a long time — and I’ve seen a lot of PMS treatments come and go. The fact that we’re still talking about this today should tell you how most of them have turned out.

    The last cramp-busting drug OK’d by the feds was a little monster called Bextra, which was pulled from the market after being linked to heart attack and stroke, and not just in women. Docs were giving these dangerous pills to everyone with any kind of ache.

    I hate to say it ladies, but a certain amount of pain comes with the calendar. For some immediate relief, do what grandma did and get cozy with a heating pad. But if you’re suffering from severe life-altering, work-missing cramps month after month, look to your diet before you start gobbling down pain pills.

    Many women just need more of the omega-3 fatty acids — if you’re not eating enough fish, get yourself a bottle of cod liver oil and go to town.

    It beats whatever’s in that bottle Big Pharma wants to sell you.

    Her antics last month protesting the US’s continued fighting of the war in Afghanistan launched her back into the spotlight. The media crowded around Cindy last month when she criticized Obama and they continue to help Cindy regain her presence by covering every book-signing and little speech she gives.

    Last week Cindy was in Scranton, Pennsylvania where she spoke to a tiny crowd about “peace” but one media report reveals that her speech was riddled with anti-American sentiment and contempt for our veterans and their legacy.

    "Who says that one American soldier’s life is better than an Iraqi baby, or a Pakistani baby or an Afghan baby?" she asked. "Who made the value of an American life more than any other life?"

    Standing in front of a statue labeled "Love," she criticized the sayings etched into the granite veterans wall surrounding the courthouse.

    "I find it despicable that this courthouse is festooned with pro-war sentiment," she said, then added later, "War – I’m sorry, it doesn’t matter how many quotes you can find – war is not noble."

    Tainted water leads to cancer spike

    I’ve been warning you for years about tainted water — and now, one community is paying the ultimate price.

    A cancer cluster has been uncovered in the Chicago suburb of Crestwood… where residents were unwittingly drinking contaminated water for decades.

    The Illinois Department of Public Health says this small village of 11,000 people is suffering from elevated rates of gastrointestinal, kidney, lung and colorectal cancers. And while you can lead a bureaucrat to tainted water, you can’t make him think — because the report actually stops short of blaming the water itself.

    But everyone knows what really happened in Crestwood.

    The contamination was first exposed in 1985, when state EPA tests found traces of a chemical used in dry cleaning in the local well water. They alerted the village, which said it would stop using the dirty water.

    That’s right — not a single follow-up test over 20 years. And if that’s the case in a place like Crestwood, where they KNEW the water was contaminated, what chance does your town have?

    Answer: None.

    This toxic tale tells you everything you need to know about the inability of public officials to test and regulate the water supply.

    It’s sad — but expect to hear about more Crestwoods. Water contamination is the next big crisis ready to explode, and your town may be next. Truth is, you’re better off sucking up a mud puddle in a Third World country than sipping a glass of typical American H20.

    How creams and lotions contribute to water pollution

    If you’re slathering on topical creams, antibiotic ointments, medicated patches and hormone lotions, you’re not just marinating yourself in unnecessary meds — you’re sharing them with your friends and neighbors as well.

    An alarming new study presented at the American Chemical Society’s annual meeting shows that when you bathe, these drugs head right into the water table, where they make a beeline for taps all over town.

    Thanks, pal. Just what the rest of us a need — an extra dose of YOUR meds.

    I’ve been warning of tainted water for years. Every day, millions of Americans are exposed to some of the worst drugs, chemicals and toxins imaginable — all pouring out of your supposedly safe tap water.

    Everything from sex-change hormones to rocket fuel has been found in U.S. drinking water from coast to coast — in big cities and small towns alike. Some of these poisons enter as human waste, like those drugs I just mentioned… but others are a byproduct of corporate greed as American industry uses your waterways as its own private dumping grounds.

    And of course, plenty of other toxic additives are put in on purpose — fluoride, chlorine and a few extras they haven’t copped to yet. Feminizing, sissy-making hormone drugs keep turning up in our water, making men impotent and weak — and I refuse to believe it’s an accident.

    Tobacco stops Parkinson’s cold

    I’ve always told you about the benefits of healthy tobacco use… and now even the mainstream researchers can’t ignore the science. I almost did a double take when I read this headline on AOL News:

    "Long-Term Smokers Have Reduced Risk of Parkinson’s."

    Researchers who studied 305,468 men and women 50 years and older found that those who’ve been smoking for less than a decade had a 4 percent lower risk… but smokers who’ve been lighting up for 30 years or more had a 41 percent lower risk, according to the study published in Neurology.

    Surprised? I’m not — it’s perfectly consistent with the body of evidence, including a 2007 study that found smokers were 73 percent less likely to come down with this debilitating degenerative disorder.

    The key isn’t how much you smoke each day, but how long you’ve been smoking — so get started now if you hope to lower your risk.

    Naturally, the researchers behind the new study are quick to apologize for their work, because of course you’re not allowed to say anything positive about smoking. So they’re urging people not to light up despite the clear benefit they confirmed, saying smoking does more harm than good… which only shows that they simply haven’t studied tobacco enough.

    But I have.

    Federal Lawsuit Challenges Michigan Scheme to Impose Union on Child-Care Providers

    LANSING, MI – In what can only be described as a blatant scheme of union boss political payback, Michigan Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm is colluding with union bosses to force all of the state’s more than 40,000 home-based child-care providers into compulsory unionism.

    In a late 2006 act of connivance, Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) officials – under the direction of Granholm, who was in a contested reelection bid at the time – created the “Michigan Home Based Child Care Council” to act as the so-called “management” of the home-care providers.

    Then, a union front group called “Child Care Providers Together Michigan” (CCPTM) – a joint operation run by United Autoworkers (UAW) and American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union officials – made a concerted effort to foist their union “representation” on the home-care providers.

    Even though only 15 percent of the 40,000 day-care providers “voted” in the union certification election, the CCPTM union hierarchy was granted monopoly bargaining privileges and political representation over all of Michigan’s home-care providers. The union certification took place after an unusual “mail-in” vote.

    Congressman Bart Stupak showed his arrogance and ignorance yesterday as he attacked the Tea Party movement. He insisted the $250,000 campaign we here at the Tea Party Express had absolutely nothing to do with him being driven from office.
    And then he attacked the tea party movement saying he was taking credit for sucking the tea party movement’s "treasury dry."

    "If anything I just made the tea party people spend a lot of money that wasn’t necessary on all these ads they have to run against me so they can’t use it on anyone else. So I’ll take credit for sucking their treasury dry."

The Polish officials were killed in a plane crash, currently thought to be caused by pilot error, in Russia.

President Kaczynski was a virulent anti-communist who really helped his country escape the crushing rule of the Soviets.” said Sal Russo, the Chief Strategist for Move America Forward.     Here Come the VAT, the Mother of All Taxes

    The Value Added Tax (VAT) cat is finally creeping out of its bag. No longer is it just those hysterical rumor-mongers like columnist Charles Krauthammer speculating on the next national tax to be imposed by the Obama administration. Now it’s none other than Obama economic adviser Paul Volcker telling the New York Historical Society that a VAT should be considered to get the deficit under control. For good measure, he threw in taxes on carbon and energy.
    A VAT is the mother of all taxes. Think of it as it is, a national sales tax imposed on virtually everything sold, with collections at every sales point (where value is added) from origin to ultimate consumer.

    BP Lubricants Drops Blue Mountain State
    Spike’s Blue Mountain State is one of the most explicit programs on cable; but the PTC’s campaign urging sponsors to stop supporting extreme programming is bearing fruit. After the PTC made them aware of the program’s content, BP Lubricants USA, Inc. thanked us in a letter, adding that the company “will take steps to ensure our advertising does not appear on unapproved and inappropriate programs in the future.” The PTC thanks BP for their responsible use of advertising dollars.
