Life After Fisker: What’s Next for EnerDel?
Not too long ago, EnerDel seemed mighty close to winning the contract to supply batteries for Fisker Automotive’s upcoming plug-in hybrid Karma. After several months of talks between the companies, EnerDel told us it had entered the in-vehicle testing phase, or what it described as “just another step to getting electric vehicles on the road […]

Cali Adopts Nation’s First Green Building Code, Not Everyone’s Happy
Just two weeks into the new year, California government authorities are helping to bolster one of our four green building trends to watch in 2010: the tightening of green building regulations. Earlier this week, a California state commission voted unanimously to approve the nation’s first mandatory statewide green building code that, according to a statement by […]

Mango Glut Overloads Brisbane Garbage System – Gluts in Africa are Critical and Need Solutions
While Brisbane’s waste removal system battles to discard perfectly good mangos, this contrasts starkly with the difficulties and opportunities associated with agricultural produce gluts in poor communities in rural Africa.
Brisbane Mangoes
So good is the mango harvest this year, that residents of Brisbane’s suburbs are battling to get rid of their excess mangos.
Apparently some trees are dropping up to 60 mangoes overnight. If these are simply placed in rubbish bins they are too heavy for the mechanical garbage trucks and get left on the street. Normally there would be a $24 fee to get a garbage truck to come back and empty the bin, but the City Council has agreed to waive this cost so long as residents first remove the mangoes. The Council has also removed the charge for dumping mangoes at the city’s transfer stations.
So in Australia the fuss is about getting the mangoes to the dump and not about the waste of food or the loss of income opportunities, that bother the African.

Addressing “Global Cooling”
Give people a little winter weather and they cry out that global climate change is a myth.
Well, unfortunately, that is not the case.
Before we get too excited about the cold weather, here are a few things to look at, including the fact that the scientist who said we were entering “global cooling” doesn’t really say so at all.

Toyota Answers Honda CR-Z With Sport Hybrid Concept: 392 HP, 0-60 4.5 sec, City EV Mode

Today at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota, in conjunction with its Gazoo Racing development team, launched the GRMN Sports Hybrid concept car (that last link is to a Japanese page that is translated with Google translate… some of the translation is a really good laugh).
Reportedly, the car is based on the outgoing MR2 platform and packs a serious punch by combining a 3.3 liter V6 to drive the rear wheels and an electric motor to power the front wheels using the company’s THSII hybrid system. The 4WD sports car develops 392 horsepower and apparently can go from 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds. Not only that, Autocar UK is reporting that the car has the ability to drive in electric vehicle mode in the city.

2010 Expected To Be a Breakout Year for Itron
Smart meter maker Itron looks set to clean up in 2010. DOT Signals Major Shift On Public Transportation Policy

More and more people are finding they need to use public transportation in the U.S. Of course, unless you live in a big city, chances are your public transportation options are limited… and probably very crappy. Public transportation has always faced an uphill battle in this country though, because hey, its a huge freakin’ country, and Americans really, really love having their own cars.
Still, if public transportation were better, more people would be apt to use it. The Obama Administration, through U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, has proposed a major revision to the guidelines followed when considering public transportation projects. But this is ground that needs to be tread carefully, especially considering recent eminent domain rulings.

Ford Unveils New Focus, Plans Electric Model For 2011

There were surprisingly few unveils at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and even fewer thrills. The AWD turbocharged Buick GS concept and electric Fiat 500 not withstanding though, perhaps the best looking car to come out of Detroit is the 2012 Ford Focus.
Based on the Blue Oval’s “One Ford” global platform sharing idea, the 2012 Focus will share over 80% of its components with European models. Even better, an electric model of the Focus should hit showrooms sometime in 2011.

Solar Rally Cut Short by Europe’s Tariff Moves
For a while there, it looked like 2010 might be the first banner year for solar stocks since 2007. It still could be, although this week is showing that, if solar does make a comeback this year, it’s not going to happen with out some sudden and stomach-churning setbacks.
The first week or so of a […]

Why A123 Threw Down for Fisker & Who’s Next
Battery maker A123Systems and plug-in car startup Fisker Automotive, which announced a new partnership on Thursday, seem like natural dance partners. Each exists as an outsider in an entrenched industry, they’re both gearing up for a ramp up in 2011 and they share one mega backer — the U.S. government.
But as Jason Forcier, VP of Automotive […]
