  • Weird… No more Basal for me?

Something odd seems to be happening. For the past week or so I was going low at least 2 times a day, I tried lowering basal but that wasnt the only thing(it isn’t meals, I always spike from them, perhaps correcting the spikes too fast?). Finally I just turned off my pump after school to keep from going low again, oddly enough it was off for a long time (didn’t measure) and no ill effects(I was watching over it with a CGMS). I would keep turning it back on to bolus for food though.

Today I went low at the start of school after lowering my carb ratio a bit in hopes of killing that terrible after breakfast spike. I got scared and was sick of all these lows and decided to just turn off my pump, I had my CGMS to warn me when I should get back on the basal. Oddly enough nothing happened, my CGMS showed a great strait graph, maybe I don’t pay as much attention to it usually but I was pleased with it. I decided to do a "basal test" for zero basal and so fasted for 4 hours 40 minutes. Then I got hungry and killed the basal test, I bolused for my food and turned off my pump again.

I spiked after that, looks like food still effects me for sure, I corrected a bit and turned off the pump again. Then I felt terrible and got scared, remembering I had once read here that someone needed the glucagon cause they where DKA but their sugar was too low to correct it properly(looking back mabey I can blame it on not being used to fasting much?). So I turned it on again and about an hour later found myself low once more(45!). I over corrected for the low(about 45 carbs, no bolus) and turned off basal again.

Of course I spiked again, once again I corrected and basal was mostly on and here I am low again.

I must say this is the craziest roller coaster I have been on for a while. My basal was always low, there where even times when it was zero for a small portion of the day but never this much.

Advice anyone? I think maybe I should try an all day proper fast with no insulin but I don’t know how long Ill keep that up and my dietitian wants to fatten me up, she is definitely against basal tests.

Most importantly can anyone tell me about DKA again? That scares me, I was sure DKA happened when you where high.
