  • HTC EVO 4G (a.k.a. Supersonic) on Sprint

It’s here! The “Supersonic” that has been running through the rumor mill has officially been announced by Sprint as the HTC EVO 4G. It has everything they said it would have, and more.

    • WiMax
    • 480 x 800 4.3″ TFT Screen
    • 1Ghz Snapdragon processor
    • 1GB of Built in memory and 512 RAM
    • 8 megapixel camera with flash
    • 1.3 megapixel front facing camera
    • Video capable of 720p
    • Sense UI
    • Android 2.1
    • HDMI out

The list goes on. It is even rumored that the EVO will have the capability to run voice and data at the same time, like GSM networks. Sprint says that feature is still in the testing. The official place for EVO action is on Sprint’s website. There are a couple videos and a great picture gallery in Engadget’s write up.

My pockets are drooling over this one. I picked up the Hero when it came out, but have been anxiously awaiting something faster and even more sexy. This is it. I will be very tempted to pick this up when it comes out this summer.

No specific dates or prices have been announced so far.

  • Nexus One Coming To Sprint

It’s now official. Google’s Nexus One is making it’s way onto the Sprint network. Sprint’s Twitter accounts just posted this tweet:

Nexus One from Google Coming to Sprint; Availability Date Announced Soon – Press Release

Sprint is continuing to improve their line-up of Android powered devices. This will make the third official Android device in their arsenal, behind the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment. Rumors are, of course, that at least two more phones may come this year. One with WiMax.

This year is shaping up to be an explosion of handsets on multiple carriers which should be reason for excitement. Competition is always good in the market place. As more carriers introduce the Nexus One, it will be a great look at how the same phone delivers and performs on various networks.

So, Sprint customers, are you getting this phone when it comes out? Or do you wait it out for the “Supersonic” or “Legend/Hero2”?

  • Need for Speed

You know all those Android phones out there running on the same 528Mhz processor? Well, they’re about to get some help.

DroidDog and Engadget are reporting that Myriad Group AG, a new member of the Open Handset Alliance, has introduced a brand new high performance virtual machine yesterday, named Dalvik Turbo that would replace the standard Dalvik engine that Android currently uses to run applications. From Myriad‘s website:

Dalvik Turbo increases application execution speed by up to three times ‐ allowing OEMs and operators to bring smoother delivery and more complex applications to Android phones, while also providing substantial battery life improvements when running resource intensive tasks. It also enables developers to take full advantage of Android, allowing them to create games boasting advanced graphics and complex models while retaining full compatibility with existing software.

I don’t know about you, but my HTC Hero on Sprint could really use this boost, not to mention those of you with G1’s. I’m excited to see what this could mean for getting even more life out of your Android phone as newer versions are released. It would be great if this were included in any 2.1 updates rolling out this year, but it’s not likely. At least not for the 2.1 update for Droid is rumored to be coming this week. ‘Substantial battery life improvements’ should really get you going too as that’s by far one of the biggest complaints of modern smartphones.

We’re sure to hear more about this soon, especially with the Mobile World Congress coming up in Barcelona from February 15th-18th.
