  • Apple market capitalization exceeds Microsoft with the advance of iPad

Apple market capitalization exceeds Microsoft with the advance of iPadMicrosoft stock’s leadership in the technology world is threatened by Apple. At the close of Tuesday’s session, the Apple company had a market capitalization of $ 223,000 million (about EUR 182 300 million) against 228 000 million the company of Bill Gates. During the last minutes of trading yesterday, Apple exceeded its rival. At closing, the capitalization of Microsoft was 219 180 million compared with 222.124 million from the company of Steve Jobs. Both are second only to Exxon Mobil in the ranking of U.S. companies by market value. The oil company capitalizes about 282 000 billion.

In this sense, The Wall Street Journal, based on data from FactSet Research, recalled yesterday that when Steve Ballmer became CEO of Microsoft, Apple had a capital of 15,600 million compared to 556 000 million for the software giant. In early 2010, the difference in favor of Microsoft was about 77 000 million.

Thus, the sharp stock market developments throughout 2010 has been crucial in achieving this. Since January, Apple builds an appreciation of close to 17% while Microsoft shares have fallen around 15%. In addition, Apple has outperformed the stock market last shock that is affecting global financial markets. Since mid April, the company Steve Jobs has dropped nearly 7% to 14% of Microsoft.

This trend is coinciding with the progress of iPad worldwide. In fact, the Apple tablet will be launched tomorrow in nine other countries. In the first month in U.S. stores the company on the block sold over a million units.

To meet demand, Apple could decide to raise production of iPad this summer. On Tuesday, the brokerage Sterne, Agee & Leach said the company could produce monthly up to 2.5 million units of its tablet. Currently, it produces between 1 and 1.5 million.

The rumors that circulate in the market suggest that Steve Jobs presented on 7 June, the new iPhone at the meeting with developers planned for that day. By contrast, Microsoft has started a major reorganization of its consumer business, which seems to be losing ground to Google and Apple. Microsoft announced Tuesday the departure of the company of Robbie Bach, head of the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes businesses such as Xbox video game console, the Windows Phone, Zune music player or mobile KIN. It would also leave the firm J Allard, vice president of this division. Bach, who has 22 years at Microsoft, will not be replaced, and those responsible for the areas of gaming and mobile, Don Mattrick and Andy Lees, report to Ballmer, putting the CEO in front of these activities directly.

  • Boku Raises More Money From New Advisors Andreessen Horowitz

    Boku Logo

This is more about the connections than it is the money, but mobile payments company Boku has raised even more money following its $25 million round in January.

The mobile payments space is hot right now with lots of start-ups looking to be the PayPal of mobile. Of course, they’ll have to compete against not only PayPal, but other financial behemoths, like MasterCard. Consider this funding event a combination of both money and brain power to fight that battle.

The undisclosed round is coming from Andreessen Horowitz, the firm founded by Netscape-Co-Founders Marc Andreesen and Ben Horowitz. The two investors, who have also placed bets in such companies as Zynga and Skype, will become strategic advisors to the San Francisco company. In addition, Boku has appointed two new executives to the team, including David Yoo, the former SVP and Chief Product Officer at AT&T (NYSE: T) Interactive, and Kevin Grant, former VP of Sales for Mobi TV. Yoo will become the SVP of Strategy and Grant will be the SVP of Sales.

Boku, which launched in June 2009, had previously raised $38 million and has been focusing on helping game and application developers charge for virtual goods on social networks. It claims that its payment service, called Paymo, accounted for nearly 100 percent of the top applications for virtual goods and currencies purchased on Facebook.

Boku said that the two new executives have been brought on board to tackle one of the biggest hurdles in the mobile payments space: reducing fees charged by carriers to make selling physical goods more feasible. In a release, Yoo said: “Mobile payments for goods and services, be they virtual, digital or physical are still in the early stages of growth. Carriers have a tremendous opportunity to generate revenue and increase ARPU as fees come down.”

Kia Soul This or That advertising spot – Click above to watch the video after the break

You could get with this, or you could get with that. ‘This,’ in case you were wondering, would be the 2010 Kia Soul, and ‘that’ would be, um, anything else. Especially a toaster, washing machine or cardboard box… and we’ll leave those vehicular associations up to you to decipher.

Before you actually watch the video pasted after the break, please know that our collective heads heads have officially exploded due to the sheer awesomeness of this effort from Kia and its marketing firm. First of all, the clip features the oddly popular Hamsters from Kia’s initial marketing launch for the Soul, the first commercial of which managed to win Nielsen’s Automotive Ad of the Year.

More importantly, as far as we’re concerned at least, is the use of Black Sheep’s The Choice is Yours as the musical accompaniment to the Alien Green Soul and its urban backdrop. Also note that the character’s so-called Hamstar clothing will soon be available for purchase by fans at hamstarclothing.com. Seriously.

Expect to see this advertisement all over your television set and in movie theaters starting on Friday, May 28. That said, we highly suggest that you get the jump on everyone else and watch the video now. Seriously, what are you waiting for? Hit the jump.

  • Richard Goldstone Comes Out Against an ICC “Crime of Aggression”

    by Julian Ku

Do we have an emerging consensus that the ICC States-Parties should refrain from adding the crime of aggression to the ICC Statute at its upcoming conference in Kampala?  Michael Glennon, the CFR, Harold Koh, David Kaye, and now Richard Goldstone have all come out against adding the crime of aggression. Here is Goldstone:

Based on my experience as an international prosecutor, and speaking as a strong supporter of the International Criminal Court, I think it would be a mistake to add the crime of aggression to the Court’s docket now. The issue should be deferred again.

By any measure, the I.C.C. has gotten off to a strong start in generating international support and demonstrating its potential to address the problem of impunity for serious international crimes.

But it also has encountered charges of politicization and is still learning, as an institution, how to exercise effectively its jurisdiction over genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

One of the greatest challenges I faced as prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (I.C.T.Y.) was convincing the Serbian public that the court was not a politically motivated conspiracy against Serbia. This challenge would have been immensely greater — perhaps impossible — if the Tribunal’s jurisdiction had included the crime of aggression. That would have required me to investigate and potentially prosecute the decision to go to war — which is inherently a profoundly political decision.

Prosecuting that decision would have inflamed Serbian suspicions of a conspiracy; choosing not to prosecute would have incited countervailing charges that the Tribunal was not fulfilling its mandate. Such a debate would have diverted attention and energy from the imperative of fairly and effectively providing justice and accountability for the grave crimes then being committed against civilians in the former Yugoslavia.

Now is not the time for the I.C.C. to risk embroiling itself in similar controversy. The issues that would arise from dealing with allegations of aggression would give ammunition to critics who claim it is a politicized institution.

Bloomberg is reporting that computer chip maker Via is saying that there are $100 tablets coming to the US in the second half of 2010 that contain their chips.  Richard Brown, Vice- President of Marketing, says that there will be 5 models ranging from the low of $100 to the- high of $150.

Developers are rushing to the tablet market following Apple selling 1 million iPads during it’s first month of availability.

A $100 price point seems tempting, but what will a C-Note get us for hardware, my hopes are not incredibly high.  An Android tablet is needed, but one that can actually compete with the iPad in terms of functionality and usability.

Let’s hope these tablets that are coming are not pieces of junk that will weaken Android coming to a tablet in a powerful way.

McLaren F1 20th anniversary – Click above for high-res image gallery

When you think about all of the truly iconic supercars that have been produced throughout history, not many carry the same mystique and world-renowned praise as the McLaren F1. Exactly 20 years ago, a team of engineers and designers came together in an attempt to build the automaker’s vision of “the finest sports car the world had ever seen.” And even though the official F1 road car was not launched until May 1992, McLaren is celebrating 2010 as the 20th anniversary of the F1 project. After all, this car changed how the world thought about lightness, packaging and supercar design.

Over the course of four years, McLaren produced 64 F1, five F1 LM and three F1 GT road cars, along with 28 F1 GTR racers and six test prototypes. At the end of its lifespan in 1998, the F1 became the world’s fastest production car, and while that title is now reserved for the almighty Bugatti Veyron, the McLaren still holds the record for fastest naturally aspirated road car. (Tricky, tricky!) Beyond that, the F1 garnered a healthy amount of respect for dominating Le Mans – these cars took first, third, fourth, fifth and thirteenth place at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as winning that year’s GT1 championship.

McLaren Automotive celebrated the F1’s 20th anniversary by inviting owners, past and present, to a dinner at the automaker’s technology center in Woking, England, which included a display of 21 road and race F1s. Looking to the future, McLaren will begin production of the MP4-12C supercar, followed by an entire range of performance cars, all built in-house. Will any of these new creations be able to hold a candle to the iconic F1? Only time will tell, but for now, we raise our glass to the original McLaren F1. Three cheers, indeed.

Follow the jump to read more about the F1 and the 20th anniversary celebration in McLaren’s press release.

  • ‘Millennium Goal’ to End World Hunger Will Not Be Met

Currently, the developing world (what used to be called “The Third World”) is experiencing the effects of higher commodity prices and declining agricultural production. Chronic undernourishment now affects an estimated one billion people, most of whom reside in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

At current population trends, another 2.3 billion will be added to the world’s population by 2050. According to the findings of the World Summit on Food Security (Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN), in order to feed this additional 2+ billion people, developing countries will need to increase their cereal crop output by 70%, nearly doubling current output.

One of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals–to dramatically reduce world hunger by 2015–will most likely not be met, given these current trends.

The estimate of 6,000 was put together by a group called American Businesses for Clean Energy, which culled membership lists from seven organizations including We Can Lead, which kicked off a major initiative this spring to lobby Congress for more green jobs.  John Deere, Target, Boeing, Gap, General Electric, and IBM are just a few of the economic powerhouses supporting federal action, and they’ve got plenty of company overseas, too.

  • Dow Jones, under 10000 points

The Dow Jones reached today the incredible low, just under 10000, the Dow Jones average wasn’t this low since four months. The main cause of this ever so low value is the drop of euro.

Dow Jones opened in the morning with a high value of 135 points but dropped down about 69 points in the closing, this is the 8 drop since 10 days for Dow.

It appears that investors are frightened by the heavy debt loads in the Europeans segments, probably fearing that this debt loads will spread to other countries too in the region. This fear could explain the heavy sell-off which occurred today on Dow.

The situation was getting even worst at the end of the trading day, since China started to review its government holdings in the European region because of this financial crisis in the euro zone.

The loose of confidence in the euro shows the loose of confidence in the European countries to be able to deal properly with their debt problems.
