  • Who Won Dancing With the Stars 2010?

Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough got perfect scores for their Argentine tango and jive, making them this year’s winner of “Dancing With the Stars”.

Figure skater Evan Lysacek and partner Anna Trebunskaya were second while reporter Erin Andrews and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy landed on the third place.

Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls and partner Derek Hough had dominated the competition throughout because they get perfect scores most of the time.

During the finale, Scherzinger performed a high-energy jive as her final dance that earned a perfect score of 30 and inspired head judge Len Goodman to say, “There can only be one winner of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ It should be you.”

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba called Scherzinger’s “like a beautiful masterpiece come to life.”

Nicole said that the personal lessons she learned during the season are more important than the trophy. “This has been probably the greatest reward personally, this whole personal journey,” she said. “I’ve learned so much about myself. I’ve learned so much about Derek Hough. He’s made me a better person through this.”

  • Shanghai Property Prices Collapse

    China Collapse

Shanghai new residential housing prices are reported to have fallen by 16% week on week for the period ending May 23rd, to 19,204 yuan per square meter.

We won’t even attempt to annualize that percentage, but clearly it’s a sharp drop if representative of the trend to come.

This is based on data from Youwin System and 1lszp.com via Capital Vue:

    Capital Vue:

Transaction area rebounded 27 percent week-on-week to 76,000 square meters.

Total transaction volume in Shanghai increased 36.06 percent week-on-week to 1,981 units, according to statistics from Midland Realty Research Department.

New supply of housing available for sale decreased 23 percent week-on-week to 158,600 square meters.

Perhaps this is why the government appears* to have become gun-shy in regards to further tightening vs. the housing market.

  • Chinese Property Punters Are Now Firing Up Commercial Real Estate Thanks To Restrictions On Housing

    China Burning Building Fire

What’s a real estate speculator to do once the government clamps down on housing investment?

Look for the next available property bet.

One example of this is Wenzhou, a city in China’s wealthy Zhejiang province.

Ever since the government restricted purchases of residential homes in mid-April, local property punters have shifted their focus to real estate alternatives — such luxury apartments and more importantly, commercial real estate.

    China Daily:

“Though recent tightening real estate policies have made property investment riskier, it is still a comparatively safer bet than stocks. And because of the strong inflationary expectations, you have to find a place to put your money,” Wang said.

Wang’s thinking is quite typical among Wenzhou investors, regarded as the most astute business people in China. Industry experts estimated that Wenzhou’s private capital could be around 600 billion yuan. Due to limited investment channels, quite a number of them still chose property as their primary investment tool. But this time, they are looking to commercial properties and high-end residential projects.

Lu Yin, director of Zidoo Group Co Ltd, the developer of the BDA Plaza in Beijing’s Yizhuang area, said enquiries from potential buyers had increased by 40 percent after real estate tightening took effect.

Commercial real estate is trading at lower prices per square meter than residential housing in Wenzhou according to China Daily. Combined with the prospect of steady yield, it’s thus being regarded as lower risk by many wealthy individual investors. Regulations will likely have to be tightened here as well, in order to put out the inevitable speculative fire.

  • Honda planning to develop electric car batteries in China

Honda FCX ClarityHonda Motor Co. has taken a look at China’s technology and massive resources and now plans to develop electric car batteries in China, according to Honda CEO Takanobu Ito.

In Southern China, Ito told reporters that a breakthrough is required to be able to carry the zero-emission cars into the mainstream. Ito had been in Southern China to announce a plan to raise Guangqi Honda’s annual production capacity by a third to 480,000 units. Honda is likely to lag behind rivals Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., which has partnered with electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. Ito forecasts that electric cars would be able to go mainstream in 10-20 years. For the next several years, Ito said that Honda will be concentrating on hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles. Honda is mulling over plans to bring electric cars in limited numbers to the US, Europe and Japan; however, it has yet to find a strategic partner that would commit to developing batteries for the vehicles. Honda actually already has a joint venture with Japan’s GS Yuasa Corp to work on lithium-ion batteries for hybrid cars. Honda and GS Yuasa have an agreement that if the need arises, they could work on electric car batteries as well. GS Yuasa is in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. for the development and production of electric car batteries.

  • 2010 Infiniti FX50, an AW Drivers Log:

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This is one of the more underrated sporty utes in my opinion–if you can get your head around the notion of a sporty ute in the first place.

I like the curvy sheetmetal; it looks cool and aggressive. The FX50 is a solid driver, too. The structure is robust, the V8 has great power–this thing is fast!–and sounds like a hot rod. And where the old FX suspension could beat you up, this car feels softer. Not too soft, but softer nonetheless. The sport mode didn’t do much for me; it just seemed to make the ride harder without helping the handling. Just one mode in a properly setup suspension would be better. I could also easily live without the lane-departure warning.

The dash reminds of the Infiniti G series and boy, are there ever a lot of gadgets to play with. The room in the back is decent.

  • Healthy Snacks: Stretch Island All-Natural Fruit Strips and FruitaBu Rolls

    stretch island.jpg
My kids love Stretch Island fruit snacks! It’s a popular lunch item and car ride treat that I feel good about giving my children. There are two varieties that come in many flavors: fruit strips (leather) and fruit rolls.

    • All-natural, 100%-fruit
    • No sugar added; gluten-free; dairy-free; certified kosher
    • One bar equal to one fruit-exchange in diabetic diet
    • Made on Stretch Island, WA

My kids prefer the fruit strips over the rolls, probably because they are easier and neater to eat.  It is important to pay attention when buying Stretch Island products, as they do make organic and conventionally-grown versions of their popular snacks.

Disclosure: I was sent free samples of these products to review. No prior assurances were given as to whether the review be positive or negative.

  • Indiana yanks Kruse auction licenses :

Kruse Inc., the auction company that sold the famous William Harrah car collection and has been synonymous with auctioning enthusiast automobiles since the 1970s, has lost its licenses in its home state.

The Indiana Auctioneer Commission ruled on Tuesday to revoke both of Kruse Inc.’s licenses, and the company has to wait seven years to apply for new ones, said Kelly Butters, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.

Dean Kruse, the president of the auction house, has had his personal license suspended indefinitely. He can apply for reinstatement in two years. He and his company were fined a total of $70,000.

A message left at Kruse Inc., which is based in Auburn Ind., was not immediately returned Wednesday evening.

Kruse has appeared to have been in trouble since last year, when reports surfaced of consigners (sellers) at auctions not getting paid, and buyers not receiving their cars. He told AutoWeek last summer the financial woes were the result of a down economy and cash-flow problems.

The ruling is a stunning fall for a company that helped grow the popularity of auctions and collecting cars among enthusiasts. In addition to selling the Harrah collection for $41 million spread out over three auctions, Kruse also claims to have sold the first car for $1 million in cash, a 1934 Duesenberg, and Dean Kruse has presided over more than 5,000 auctions, the company Web site said. He also is known for an impressive personal collection, and has been profiled in AutoWeek for his extensive array of cars.

Terms of the ruling are not final, but have been agreed on by Kruse, his company and state officials. A written ruling is expected as soon as this week.

“This agreement is satisfactory and this remedies the situation,” Butters said. “An important aspect of this is getting the consigners repaid.”

It’s unclear what this means for Kruse’s auctions in other states. But the company and Dean Kruse cannot auction cars in Indiana or use those licenses elsewhere. Kruse held auctions in Arizona, Florida and Alabama earlier this year.

Additionally, Dean Kruse must submit quarterly reports certified by a CPA to the auction commission showing payments to consigners. If he applies for reinstatement and gets his license back, he has 18 months to have paid off all claims and civil penalties.

  • T-Mobile Claiming ‘4G Speeds’ To Pretend It’s Offering 4G

There’s just something about mobile operators that they love to make claims that are just sorta kinda true, while not really being true in spirit. This is the industry, of course, that has perfected “up to” marketing. As in “you should get speeds ‘up to’ xMbps” which, is technically true since any speed below that is covered, even if you’ll never get a speed anywhere near the defined “x.”

The other popular tactic is to lie about what kind of wireless network you’re actually offering. There were the claims that any wireless broadband solution was “WiMAX” back before the WiMAX standard was even set. So you started to get companies calling their solution “WiMAX” and then including all sorts of fine print about how it was “pre-WiMAX” and would certainly be upgraded to WiMAX once WiMAX actually existed.

Similarly, nearly a decade ago, when all the talk was about the upcoming “3G” networks, the mobile carriers all started pushing claims that they were offering “3G” when they absolutely were not. There were some interim “2.5G” steps, and some aggressive marketers just decided to round up. And, it looks like they’re doing that again. T-Mobile is going around claiming its HSPA+ network offers “4G speeds,” which, of course, is not to be confused with actual 4G. And, of course, this is an “up to” situation, where the network could, theoretically, sorta, kinda touch on “4G speeds,” but probably won’t for most people.

  • Rumor: Kyocera Zio M6000 Headed for Boost Mobile

Kyocera unveiled their Zio M600 over two months ago at CTIA yet we’re still waiting to hear which carrier will be offering the device.  The last time we checked in, it was rumored to be Sprint-bound with a $99 price tag attached to it.  A source of ours is telling us tonight that it’s actually headed for Boost Mobile with a possible Best Buy exclusive deal. Close enough, right?

The Zio M600 has received somewhat lukewarm reception thus far as it’s on the low end of the Android totem pole.  We played with one at CTIA and found it to be rather unremarkable.  However, this might be the key to its success.  With a rumored $169-$219 unsubsidized cost and a $50 all-you-can-eat calling/data plan, the Zio M600 could do very well.

As a quick refresher, the features include:

  • You Knew The Eurozone Was Bad At Budgeting, But Turns Out Breaking Rules Was Literally The Norm

    girl cover ears loud kid

It’s well known that Eurozone governments frequently disregarded budget restrictions as outlined by the Stability and Growth Pact.

Yet it turns out that flaunting of budget rules was literally the norm.

    Bloomberg:

With Greece’s debt crisis now exposing the weakness of fiscal oversight in the 16-nation economy, governments missed one or both of the European Union’s two budget requirements 57 percent of the time since they adopted the euro. Those rules limit debt to 60 percent of gross domestic product and budget deficits to 3 percent of GDP, as set out in the 1997 Stability and Growth Pact.

There’s a long way to go to bring this under control. For starters, the Eurozone needs to simply have its rules followed more often than not. It’s hard to see how nations can be forced to regularly follow budget rules within a short period of time. The adjustment would be too sudden and harsh for populations to bear. In many nations they’ll protest or riot and push out politicians trying to make the hard adjustments.
