  • The Only Thing Worse Than A Bull? An Inflationist Bear

A lot of investors and pundits have been and remained bearish throughout the course of the last few years.  Within this bear camp there have been two distinct groups – the deflationists and the inflationists.  The market action in the last few weeks has shown one of these two groups to be only marginally better than a full blown permabull.  Since the recent downturn began on April 26th an inflationist portfolio has actually performed worse than a standard 60/40 stock/bond portfolio.

Obviously, there is no standard inflation or deflation portfolio, but the general claims from the inflationists have been that the next big downturn would be the result of a crushing debt burden from a U.S. government that has spent too much and printed more money than the economy can bear.  This would all result in the demise of the dollar, spiking interest rates, soaring gold prices, soaring hard assets and soaring commodities.   Since the recent downturn began on April 26th a simple inflation portfolio that was evenly short trade weighted US Dollars, short US Treasuries, long gold, long commodities (GS Commodity Index), and long oil has returned -9.29%.   An aggressive gold bug portfolio (50% gold) has done better though still performed poorly over the last few weeks with a -3.75% total return.  A lazy stock/bond portfolio has actually outperformed BOTH portfolios with a -3.6% return.  Meanwhile, a portfolio positioned for deflation has returned +6.75% over the last month.  Even the ultimate deflationary portfolio (100% cash) has outperformed.

    chart

Now, clearly I’m cherry picking the assets to some extent to prove a point, but it’s a very important one in my opinion – if you’ve missed the analysis you’ve missed the move in your portfolio.  There are a lot of impostors out there who have been right in theory and wrong in practice.  The overwhelming majority of bears have been expecting an inflationary period on the back of the out of control “printing” by the Fed.  But just as in 2008, this inflationary strategy has been fantastically wrong.  If you’re not familiar with monetary operations and the resulting impact on the economy then your analysis and portfolio performance has been entirely off the mark.  The inability to connect the dots and understand the true underlying fundamentals in the economy has been a very destructive lesson in being bearish.  In fact, you  would practically have been better off just being a full blown bull….

  • Christina Aguilera Tour Cancelled

Christina Aguilera North American summer tour has been cancelled indefinitely to give the singer more time to rehearse for the performances.

After a three year hiatus, the “Beautiful” hitmaker returns to the music scene with a new album, Bionic, dropping next month. Xtina had been due to kick off her trek in July, but now promoters have pushed the dates all the way back until 2011.

While there are some ramblings about poor tickets sales, representatives from Live Nation are citing Aguilera’s heavy work schedule for the cancellation, revealing she needs more time to prepare.

“The singer felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour date this wasn’t possible,” a representative said in a statement Tuesday.

We should mention that Aguilera — whose latest music video “Not Myself Tonight” was almost universally panned — has been plagued by reports that her new sexed-up image was inspired by pop “It Girl of the Hour,” Lady Gaga.

Ticket refunds for the Bionic Tour are available from the point of purchase.

  • Still’s Disease’s Unknown Origin

The causes are vague but the disease exists.

Still’s disease is a disorder which leads to a type of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRS) or systemic onset JRA. Systemic means joint inflammation is coupled with symptoms affecting other parts of the body. The symptoms include having on and off rashes and high fever reaching 39 degrees C during the day and reoccurs in about the same, then often joint pain and swelling follows. It may lead to inflammation of the heart, fluid accumulation in the lungs, loss of appetite, and nausea.

It is diagnosed based solely on the aforementioned symptoms that usually last for months, except for arthritis that persists even after the symptoms, until it becomes chronic in adulthood. It is common among 25,000-50,000 children in the U.S., but adults can acquire it, termed as Adult-Onset Still’s Disease, according to Medicinenet. Its name originated from Dr. George Still.

Medications include anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin; cortisone and prednisone for severe cases. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy is being studied as an alternative measure.

  • Bushwick Inlet Park to transform decaying industrial strip to a public park

    bushwick_5

Eco Factor: Sustainable development collects rainwater and solar energy.

The Bushwick Inlet Park by Kiss + Cathcart Architects is the remaking of the Greenpoint – Williamsburg waterfront in Brooklyn, NY, from a decaying industrial strip to a multifaceted public park. The park becomes a green hill on the west side, offering views over the ball fields to the Manhattan skyline.

    bushwick_1

A multi-level playground and public rooms ascend the hill, while direct access for the public and parks personnel is provided from the street edge below. The paved surfaces on the hill harvest rainwater to irrigate the green roof slope. All other rainwater goes into the ground or passes through a tidal wetland landscape at the river’s edge.

    bushwick_3

Solar panels have been installed to generate more than half the energy demands of the development. Moreover, the architects are also planning to use a ground source heat pump for efficient heating and cooling.

  • How the ABS system on a car works? About the direction system

An anti-lock braking system, or ABS is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking up (or ceasing to rotate) while braking.

A rotating road wheel allows the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking by preventing a skid and allowing the wheel to continue interacting tractively with the road surface as directed by driver steering inputs.

ABS offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and especially slippery surfaces.

However, on loose surfaces like gravel and snow-on-pavement, it can slightly increase braking distance while still improving vehicle control.

Since initial widespread use in production cars, anti-lock braking systems have evolved considerably. Recent versions not only prevent wheel lock under braking, but also electronically control the front-to-rear brake bias.

This function, depending on its specific capabilities and implementation, is known as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), traction control system, emergency brake assist, or electronic stability control.

The anti-lock brake controller is also known as the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brake).

A typical ABS is composed of a central electronic control unit (ECU), four wheel speed sensors — one for each wheel — and two or more hydraulic valves within the brake hydraulics.

The ECU constantly monitors the rotational speed of each wheel, and when it detects a wheel rotating significantly slower than the others — a condition indicative of impending wheel lock — it actuates the valves to reduce hydraulic pressure to the brake at the affected wheel, thus reducing the braking force on that wheel. The wheel then turns faster; when the ECU detects it is turning significantly faster than the others, brake hydraulic pressure to the wheel is increased so the braking force is reapplied and the wheel slows.

This process is repeated continuously, and can be detected by the driver via brake pedal pulsation. Engine is influenced by the ABS System.

  • PatientKeeper’s iPad App Lets Docs Juggle Tasks, Furthers Firm’s Mobile Ambitions

    patientkeeper logo
    Ryan McBride wrote:

PatientKeeper has worked fast to make its physician software available on whichever smartphones or mobile devices doctors like to use. So it makes sense for the Newton, MA-based firm to expand its menu of mobile applications this month to the iPad, Apple’s hot new tablet computing device.

The company develops software that automates a physician’s duties, such as viewing patient data from electronic records systems, ordering prescriptions or lab tests, and recording charges for services. Some 23,000 clinicians use the software, which they can access on smartphones, laptops, PCs, and now the iPad, says company CEO Paul Brient.

The company, founded as Virtmed in 1996, was renamed in 2001 after the mobile app called “Patient Keeper” that a Texas physician developed for Palm Pilots, Brient says. The firm purchased that Palm app, which he says had an early “cult following,” about a decade ago. The firm has since gone on to support apps for smartphones such as BlackBerry devices, Windows Mobile phones, and the iPhone.

When developing software, PatientKeeper targets areas that make a physician’s workday easier and more productive, Brient says. This physician-centric product strategy sets PatientKeeper’s programs apart from most healthcare software systems, which are usually designed to automate tasks for a specific unit of a hospital such as a radiology lab, emergency room, or billing department. The firm’s unique approach in healthcare, which has changed and evolved over its 14-year history, has attracted about $84 million in venture investments.

Traditional healthcare software—including electronic health records (EHR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE)—have failed to gain mainstream adoption among U.S. physicians. Many complain that the software makes them less productive than standard paper-based systems, and that doctors themselves don’t get rewarded for spending the time and money to adopt the technology. Brient says PatientKeeper has focused on software that not only makes doctors more productive but also improves their use of healthcare IT systems like CPOE.

  • Audi S1 to be front wheel drive, Audi A2 strictly electric

    New Audi A2 renderings

After news that no Volkswagen Polo R will be developed in order to favour the new Audi S1 and a Volkswagen Jetta R model, we also learn that the S1 will have front wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive in a move likely to anger purist Audi fans. While the Audi S1 will be equipped with a 1.4 TFSI engine and 180 hp, the front-wheel drive option should keep prices down; although we reported yesterday that we could be looking at starting prices of about 29,000 euros for the S1.

In the meantime, the new Audi A2 is planned to be an ‘electric only’ model when it’s launched in 2012. The company is preparing itself to compete against the new BMW Megacity model which will be available only the following year in 2013. The Audi A1 and A2 will share some components, including the steel monocoque structure which will replace the expensive spaceframe from the original A2.

We had originally thought that the BMW Megacity (still under development) would be a showdown with the A1, but it’s clear Audi is preparing the A2 as the true competitor from the drivetrain point of view. Depending on style, although the A2 is set to follow the previous model, it won’t be until the BMW Megacity emerges that we can really start to check out the competitors.

    Mon May 24, 2010 12:23am EDT
SHANGHAI, May 24 (Reuters) – China will award buyers of green cars with subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan ($8,789) each, the Shanghai Securities News said on Monday, as it steps up efforts to cut emissions in the world’s biggest auto market.
Stocks Global Markets Cyclical Consumer Goods
The Chinese government has worked out a plan to subsidise green car buyers and will unveil details by the end of this month, the newspaper said, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
Subsidies will be based on the performance and energy-savings efficiency of the models, the paper said.
Maximum subsidies for buyers of pure electric vehicles is 60,000 yuan each, while those for plug-in hybrid and normal hybrid cars are 50,000 yuan and 3,000 yuan respectively, it said.
Beijing said in December 2009 that it will subsidise green vehicle buyers in five selected cities.
It will also expand a pilot scheme to subsidise the purchase of clean-energy vehicles for public transport fleets in 13 cities to 20 cities, it said, without giving a timetable or naming the cities. [ID:nTOE5B9033]
Chinese automakers, unscathed by a savage global downturn, are ramping up efforts to get cleaner, low-emission vehicles on the roads, counting on the green drive to propel them into the top ranks of the global auto industry.
From leading Chinese auto group SAIC Motor Corp (600104.SS) to rising star Geely Automotive Holding (0175.HK), indigenous players showcased a host of new green vehicles at the 2010 Beijing autoshow in April.
Foreign automakers are also on the move. In 2011, General Motors [GM.UL] will roll out its Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid in China next year, while Nissan Motor (7201.T) will bring its electric model, Leaf, to the country. ($1=6.826 Yuan) (Reporting by Fang Yan and Jacqueline Wong)

  • Slipknot Bassist Paul Gray – Found Dead in a Hotel Room

Paul Gray, bassist of the metal band Slipknot, found dead at Town Place Suites in Urbandale, Iowa on Monday. Gray, who just turned 38 last April 8, was expecting his first child to his wife, Brenna. His death was confirmed by Amy Sciarretto, the publicist of Slipknot, who did not give any further comment. The police found no evidence of foul play in Gray’s death, however the investigation still continues. His body was found by a hotel employee at around 10:50 in the morning. Gray was known as “#2” and “The Pig”. He was also the co-founder of Slipknot in 1995, together with drummer Joey Jordison and percussionist Shawn Crahan.  He was known by the public as the bassist who wore a grotesque mask. In the year 2006, Slipknot was awarded as the Best Metal Performance for “Before I Forget” from the prestigious Grammy awards.

Gray was arrested in 2003 for drug-possession charges after the police had found small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and two syringes in his car after a traffic accident in Des Moines. His life seemed to have a turnabout since he married his girlfriend Brenna Paul two years ago.

Nonpoint drummer Rob Rivera told MTV news, “I am deeply saddened to hear and read about the death of Paul Gray. Nonpoint had the pleasure of touring with Slipknot during the 2001 Ozzfest, and what we saw from Paul and the rest of Slipknot was a band that gave their all live and put their bodies on the line. To all in Slipknot and Paul’s family, Nonpoint send all our love, condolences and prayers out to you. You will be missed by all your friends and fans around the world. Rest In Peace my metal brother.”

  • Yahoo teams up with Nokia for navigation services

Yahoo Inc. will be providing Nokia, the largest mobile provider, mail and messaging capabilities through Nokia Ovia and Nokia iChat. Nokia, on the other hand, will be empowering Yahoo with navigation, location, and mapping services. The services will be available second half of this year and gear up in 2011, reports the Associated Press.

Both have reached an agreement Monday to extend their services in the global market where advertising and Internet is becoming more accessible to users through mobile phones. However, the partnership covers both mobiles and computers.

“On the PC side, any of the mapping services by definition give us, especially in the local arena ,a good platform for advertising…and as mobile increasingly becomes important for advertising, the same thing will happen in the mobile application,” enthused Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz. Location, she added, is important since people want to know where they and their friends are. Yahoo has prioritized other areas that left it tailing behind Google.

As for Nokia, the partnership will provide increased mobile presence in the U.S. where it is being outsmarted by iPhone (Apple Inc.) and BlackBerry (Research In Motion Ltd.).

Reuters quoted Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo saying, “Location, maps and navigation will get more mind-share, will get more attention in the U.S. and many more users in the North American market.”

If the team up will work, Neil Mawston of Strategy Analytics sees it as an opportunity to bring about closer ties in mobile advertising for longer terms.

  • Sprint EVO 4G first impressions and hands on video

Yes, I was one of the lukcy 5,000 people who received a Sprint HTC EVO 4G at Google I/O.

Several sites have already posted their reviews, but I believe the EVO is one of the most important phone launches in Android’s history. We want to spend the proper time with the device before posting our final thoughts, so look out for a bunch of mini posts this week that will cover all things EVO.

First up, I just wanted to cover the basics of the EVO for those new to the device. Sprint begins selling the EVO 4G on June 4th for $199 with 2 year contract. Customers are required to pay $10 for the 4G premium data add-on and the mobile hotspot feature is an additional $29 per month.

From the moment I first held it, the EVO became my new favorite Android device based purely on the hardware specs. The 4.3 inch display is just massive and it is a joy to play with. HTC is using the new Atmel maXTouch sensor and the touch input is more precise than what I experienced on the Nexus One.

Powering the EVO is the 1 GHz Snapdragon. I’ve been the using the Nexus One which also features the same processor, so the performance between the two phones (and the HTC Incredible) is comparable. The only difference I can mention is that the Nexus One was noticeably faster when upgraded to Android 2.2, but we expect HTC will do the same for the EVO later this year.

The most notable feature of this phone (and most marketed) will be its 4G support. Sprint claims their 4G WiMAX network is 10x faster compared to other 3G networks (6 Mbps vs. 600 Kbps) and we will see how that promise holds up in a comprehensive speed test over the next few days. All I can say right now is that I think many of you will be shocked by my 4G speed results.

I’ve been out of town the last few days so I have yet to get an accurate reading on how well the battery performs. I will be taking a daily log this week and see how it does with 4G data left on and turned off.

I have barely tested the camera at all and there will be an entire dedicated post for picture and video quality. No micro HDMI cable was included with the unit, so I still need to locate one in town and film the results on my HD TV set.

If you have any special request for a video idea or other things to include in the review, please leave me a comment. I admit some our previous phone reviews kinda sucked, but we have listened to all your feedback and the entire team is spending extra time on this review to make sure it stands above the rest.

Make sure to hit up the source link if you wish to view the hands on video in HD.

Highlights of the Sprint EVO 4G include:

    • Simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while the conversation continues.
    • Offering a new way to search with pictures instead of words, Google Goggles works with everything from books, DVDs and barcodes to landmarks, logos, artwork and wine labels.
    • Superfast 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, ensuring a smooth and quick movement within phone menus.
    • Two cameras – an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera.
    • Built-in mobile hotspot functionality allowing up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 3G or 4G experience on the go with a laptop, camera, music player, game unit, video player, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.
    • Integrated HD video capture with the ability to capture and share live video via the Qik Web site, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter(TM).
    • Ability to easily watch video with the device on an HDTV via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
    • Custom Web browser optimized for the 4.3 inch display and Sprint 4G speeds to deliver a full, no-compromise Internet experience.
    • A handy kickstand built into the back, making it easy to watch videos on-the-go.
    • Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, are displayed the way they are meant to be seen.
    • Pinch-to-zoom and automatic text reflowing provide easy Web page views.

McLaren MP4-12CIn an effort to raise sales in the next two years and for it to be able to hit its goal of 4,000 units a year, McLaren is developing a global dealership network.

McLaren Automotive aims to create a network of 35 dealers in 19 countries by 2011, with 12 in Europe and 8 in North America. McLaren intends to expand this network further in 2012 but it isn’t expected to reach more than 70 dealers. McLaren is set to announce 23 new dealers before the MP4-12C is launched in July. McLaren will have representations in global cities such as Chicago, Toronto, Sydney, Dubai and Zurich.

The cars will still be produced along with its Formula One vehicles at its Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, England. It becomes obvious that the company seeks to connect with customers through its Formula One credentials.

McLaren wants to keep its image as a highly specialized maker of high-performance cars that differentiate it from other luxury and premium brand competitors, which may be known more for making more conventional sedans and coupes.

In a press release, Antony Sheriff, Managing Director at McLaren Automotive, said that the company aims to have a global network that has “fewer retailers than [its] competitors, selling a smaller volume of higher quality cars.” This July, the MP4-12C is expected to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. For 2011, McLaren is slated to produce and sell a thousand 12Cs.
