  • Scully: Where are the African Americans and Latinos in Linda McMahon’s ad campaign?

Fresh off Corey Brinson’s observations about the lack of diversity on the Republican ticket comes Patrick Scully’s criticism that Linda McMahon’s campaign ads and brochures look awfully white.

“One would think that having access to the best professional campaign people would mean all voting demographics would be covered. They’re not,” writes Scully, a Democratic operative who runs a consulting firm, in his blog, The Hanging Shad.

“McMahon should have to answer for spending millions to appeal to the country club set to the detriment of diversity,” Scully writes. “According to the Census Bureau’s latest numbers, racial minorities comprised nearly 28% of Connecticut’s population. McMahon’s campaign imagery is nowhere near reflective of the state she wants to represent in the US Senate.”

Scully’s criticism comes a few days after another prominent Democrat, Jonathan Pelto, sent around a YouTube clip in which McMahon’s husband, wrestling impresario Vince McMahon, appears to uttering the n-word.

What does the McMahon campaign think of this new line of attack? Is it just a way to divert attention from Democrat Richard Blumenthal’s Vietnam War misrepresentations? I have an email out to McMahon spokesman Ed Patru seeking comment.

  • Shrek Forever After: Movie Reviews

With so many high-budget movies pouring in,people are likely hesitant to put in money for a 4th movie. But Sherk was an exception . This sensation has taken Kids To the world of Imagination and Hollywood. The kid-centered movie opened on Friday, May 21st 2010. We will now take a look at what some of the critics are saying about Sherk and Its fourth appearance.

But first Nomovie is subject to a review without the amazing cast!

which is  Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots), Julie Andrews (Queen), Jon Hamm (Brogan), John Cleese (King), Craig Robinson (Cookie), Walt Dohrn (Rumpelstiltskin/Priest/Krekraw Ogre), Jane Lynch (Gretched) and also the director who made this movie possible with the cast Mike Mitchell.

    Review:

It’s been ten years on since the first “Shrek” and even in the land of Far Far Away time can pass. Shrek’s (Mike Myers) back in his swamp side hovel, enjoying the good life, all of the headaches that came with rescuing Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) dealt with. He would be enjoying the good life, that is, except now he’s safely settled down with three kids into the monotony of married life and he’s not feeling like the ogre he once was. So when Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) offers to make him deal so that he can have one more day of free-willing, villager-terrorizing fun, what’s the worst that can happen?

    Review:

“Shrek Forever After” has enough in it to entertain both adults and children and make it worth checking out, especially in 3D. While it’s not the grand finish to the series that you would hope for, it’s a definite improvement that makes you forget its weaker predecessor.

  • Sarah Ferguson Sells Prince Andrew for 500,000 pounds

Sarah Ferguson was accused of selling access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew for 500,000 pounds. The tabloid News of the World posted video on its website which shows Ferguson discussing payment terms. It seemed that Ferguson, the Duchess of York, fell for the Sunday newspaper’s regular undercover reporter Mahzer Mahmood. In the interview, it showed that Ferguson was demanding a payment that will be wired to her HSBC account. She said to the reporter, “That opens up everything you would ever wish for and I can open any door you want and I will for you. Look after me and he’ll look after you… you’ll get it back tenfold.”

Ferguson and Prince Andrew were married for 10 years and was divorced in 1996. Ferguson had pictures showing that she was licking toes of Johnny Bryant, her financial-adviser, while she was married to Andrew.  They had two daughters before the split. The former couple remains close friends. Ferguson stated, “He’s so amazing. We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world.”

Buckingham Palace did not comment on the allegation to Ferguson.  There were also no indications showing that Prince Andrew was aware of what her ex-wife was doing. The issue, once again, causes embarrassment for Prince Andrew and the royal household.

  • Wait Until You’re Dead To Pay For Your Funeral

You’re gonna die. Why make your family suffer even more by burdening them with the cost of your funeral? That’s the pitch made by companies that try to get you to pay for your funeral years in advance. But, in most cases, you’re better off putting your money into normal savings accounts or life insurance instead.

The Wall Street Journal takes a close look at the prepaid funeral industry, and why these plans are usually a bad idea:

Some view prepaid plans as an inflation hedge that allows them to lock in today’s prices—about $10,000 on average—for an expense that in recent years has risen faster than the consumer price index. Others take the step simply to spare survivors the burden of arranging and paying for a funeral. Consumer advocates say these plans are most appropriate for people who wish to spend down assets in order to qualify for Medicaid coverage.

About one in four Americans age 50-plus—some 20 million people—have paid in advance for a funeral service, according to AARP. While national figures on the size of those payments are scarce, in Texas alone consumers have contracts worth $3 billion.

Prepaid funeral plans come in two basic varieties. With a so-called guaranteed plan, a funeral home promises that if you pay today’s prices, it will provide the goods and services you purchased, no matter how much prices rise. “Non-guaranteed” plans offer no such protections. But if these accounts appreciate in value, heirs get to keep the gains. (You can prepay today’s full cost or a portion of it, in one lump sum or over time.)

Even guaranteed plans don’t always protect against unexpected bills, however. Many exempt such items as flowers and music. And changes, such as upgrades in caskets or a switch to another funeral home, can void the price guarantee.

There are other risks as well. In 2008, a Missouri company that sold prepaid plans collapsed, after “systematically loot[ing] the cash for their personal enrichment” according to state officials.

The industry is largely unregulated, leading to abuses and fraud. Instead of a prepaid plan, the Journal recommends setting up a joint bank account with someone you trust, and putting your funeral savings there. Or you can set up a trust fund and designate it for funeral costs.

  • Calling all members — Be ready to contact lawmakers!

This is expected to be the final week of the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly.  The Democratic majority wants to avoid an extended session because, if no balanced budget is passed by midnight on May 31, a 3/5 vote (instead of a simple majority) is needed to pass a state budget.  That would require members of both political parties to work together, something we haven’t seen for a while.

    So, what’s going to happen?

The state is broke.  IEA continues to advocate for HB 174, the comprehensive tax reform proposal that would allow Illinois to get back on the road to fiscal health by reducing some of the deficit and providing the revenue needed to fund education and essential services.

    Will HB 174 pass?

There are no indications that a House majority is ready to support an income tax increase six months before the election.  Unless the courage and vision needed to pass new revenue is unexpectedly discovered, it is likely that the next budget will contain significant budget cuts.

    What happens to education funding?

Without revenue, some sort of cut seems likely, though less than $1.3 billion that was proposed months ago and, we hope, less than the $560 million recommended again Sunday by the Chicago Tribune editorial board in its weekly attack on public employee unions.

    What about pension funding?

Governor Quinn on Friday reiterated his support for borrowing to make the $3.6 billion pension payment. The State Journal-Register editorializes that making the pension payment should be the state’s top priority.

Delaying the payment will cost the state $37 billion in lost compounding interest over the next 35 years. Borrowing the money would cost the principal amount — $3.6 billion — plus hundreds of millions in interest. While more borrowing is less than ideal, it’s clear that it’s more fiscally responsible than delaying or skipping the payment to a pension system that already is the nation’s worst funded.

But House Republicans and 11 House Democrats refused earlier this month to vote for any borrowing. House Republicans want the full pension payment made without borrowing any money. At least one House Republican vote is needed to authorize borrowing because the Democrats only have 70 votes in the chamber and 71 are necessary.

Republicans are cynically playing politics with this issue, attempting to add another arrow to the quiver full of issues they hope to shoot at the Democrats in an election year.

    What can/should IEA members do?

It’s likely that, between now and May 31st, and perhaps more than once, IEA members will be asked to drop everything they’re doing, contact their legislators, and urge those officials to either pass or oppose key legislation.

It is crucial that, when the “Call to Action” is announced, as many as possible of IEA’s 133,000 members statewide receive and answer it.  So, here are some suggestions to help members stay connected:

    • Visit the IEA website.  It will be updated regularly.
    • Sign up for the IEA insider (email [email protected]) and the IEA Capitol Report (email [email protected]).  Make sure the newsletters get sent to the email address you are most likely to check daily.
    • Become a fan of the IEA facebook page to see news updates, event announcements and chances to win prizes.
    • Follow IEA on Twitter. In addition to delivering news updates, you can closely follow breaking news when we “Tweet” legislative debate or important meetings.

    It wasn’t always like this

Those not of a certain age might be surprised to learn that, once upon a time, Illinois state government worked (mostly) for the people.

In his Sunday column, Mike Lawrence, longtime journalist and top aide to Jim Edgar, our last unindicted governor, reminds us that Phil Rock, the longest-serving (1979-1993) president of the state senate, presided in an era when lawmakers weren’t fixated on remaining in office.

Rock braved criticism from his own ranks in 1983 when he became the first General Assembly leader to back Gov. James Thompson’s call for an income tax increase to replenish a recession-ravaged treasury. Let Thompson and his fellow Republicans broil for a few months before we come to the table, many Democrats argued. But Rock and the General Assembly’s other top Democrat, House Speaker Michael Madigan, sat down with Thompson and the GOP legislative chieftains, Sen. James “Pate” Philip and Rep. Lee Daniels, to fashion a package that preserved vital services and stabilized state finances.

Eight years later, the same four legislative leaders helped another Republican chief executive, Jim Edgar, extend an income tax surcharge and simultaneously make budget cuts needed to close a substantial deficit while sparing at-risk children.

“I think it’s fair to say that I was not overly concerned about my tenure and people who know me will tell you that’s probably a fact,” Rock says. “I did not worry about re-election. I did not worry about hanging on to a job.”

Things aren’t like they used to be.  That’s why pressure from IEA members is so important.

    Keep in touch.

  • Bollywood movie “Kites” is U.S

Bollywood movie “Kites” starring Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori has caught American Media. This is one of the most reviewed bollywood film by US critics. According to New York Times, the story of the film is completely crazy but the photography and stunts really impressive.

Different newspapers had different views about the movie but most of them appreciated and gave positive reviews about the movie. Whereas in home land India, the film did not a get good starting. “You’ll get more than your money’s worth,” said Newsday describing it as “A boldly old-fashioned, I’ll-die-without-you, nobly self-sacrificing movie romance. Gorgeously photographed.

The whole movie had been shot in beautiful Las Vegas, and the stunts done by actor Hrithik Roshan are marvelous. Except the stunts and photography, nothing makes the audience stick to the movie. Story line is weak and the fact that the two lead roles of the movie can’t speak the language of each other is the biggest negative point of the move. Anyways, it is being appreciated among U.S audience, so lets see how the movie rolls on in coming days.

  • Lindsay Lohan back in L.A

Actress Lindsay Lohan after missing a probation hearing returned from France to Los Angeles on Saturday night. Judge Marsha Revel issued an arrest warrant for missing the hearing. Lohan who is 23 years old arrived in L.A and she was wearing dark sunglasses and a hat. Photographers and paparazzi were waiting to capture the moment.

Judge said Lohan must undergo drug and alcohol tests every week from now, and also she must wear a bracelet which is an alcohol monitor. She is not allowed to drink any alcohol until she appears in court. Lindsay Lohan is considered as one of the most talented actress of the Hollywood but her frequent night clubbing and drink driving problems have slumped her movie career.

Everyone was waiting for Lindsay to appear in L.A and she did not look sad or upset at all after so many gossips about her. In fact she looked like she had a blast at Canes film festival in France and she is not aware of anything.

Though Lindsay has not done any good movies lately, “Freaky Friday” and “Bobby” are memorable movies.

  • Lindsay Lohan in court after returning to Los Angeles

Lindsay Lohan in court after returning to Los Angeles Lindsay Lohan returned to Los Angeles on Saturday night from France, two days after missing a hearing on her probation that made the judge to issue an arrest warrant against the actress.

Wearing a dark hat and sunglasses, Lohan, 23, flew to Los Angeles after a week of parties in the Cannes film festival.

The actress from “Mean Girls” was missing on Monday a hearing in a court of Beverly Hills, called after not completing a course on alcohol education that was imposed after being arrested for drunk driving  in 2007. Lohan claimed that her passport has been stolen.

Judge Marsha Revel on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for Lohan, but later reversed because the legal team of the actress paid a deposit of $ 100,000 (79,000 euros).

Lohan has banned from drinking alcohol, the court ordered her to undergo random alcohol tests, and also to wear a bracelet to monitor her consumption.

The judge extended the probation last October and warned Lindsay that she was in danger of being sent to prison.

Education classes on alcohol are part of the sentence she received after her arrest for drunken driving in a reckless manner and under the influence of illegal substances.

Lohan was considered one of the most talented young actresses in Hollywood thanks to films like “Freaky Friday” and “Bobby.”

Because she has gone to rehab three times in 2007, her career has fallen and her habit of going to parties has become a frequent topic of celebrity magazines.

  • UN Haiti mission investigating prison shootings

[JURIST] A spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti [official website] announced Saturday that the mission has launched an investigation into the shootings of dozens of prisoners in a jail riot following the January 12 earthquake [JURIST news archive] which killed over 200,000 people and left some 1 million homeless. An earlier investigation [NYT report] by the New York Times [media website] alleged that Haitian police officials opened fire on unarmed prisoners during the riot and sought to cover it up by claiming that prison ring-leader, Ti Mousson, murdered any inmates who refused to cooperate in his escape plan. According to the Times report, police officials raided the jail during the riot shouting for prisoners to lie down, but instead of securing the area began shooting the inmates, including those that had surrendered. One witness claims that some prisoners were killed systematically to “settle scores.” Following the shooting, police authorities failed to notify inmates’ relatives of the deaths, buried bodies without conducting autopsies and burned the surviving prisoners’ bloodstained clothing. Prison authorities deny the allegations and claim that no shots were fired by police officers.

In February the acting head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti [official website] urged Haitians to turn in prisoners who escaped [JURIST reports] when the earthquake destroyed prisons and jails. The aftermath of the earthquake also placed a strain on detainees arrested since the disaster, as limited space and limited access to judges burdened the country’s already tenuous criminal justice system.

  • A skeptic needs our help | Bad Astronomy

michaelstriebLast year, at The Amaz!ng Meeting 7, I met a young skeptic who went by the handle Nobby Nobbs on the fora. His real name is Michael Strieb, and he has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This is the same condition Stephen Hawking has.

In Michael’s case it confined him to a wheelchair and at TAM it was very difficult for him to speak. I just read from Rebecca at Skepchick that his condition has progressed, and now it’s impossible for him to talk. His mind is healthy and sharp, but his body is making it extremely difficult to communicate.

Because of this, a group has set up a page where people can donate so that they can buy Michael an Eye Gaze System, an incredibly cool setup where a machine can measure where his eye is pointing, and use that to guide a cursor on a computer screen, allowing Michael to once again communicate. The device costs about $3200.

Update: Someone who knows Michael has let me know that this is not the only source of their financial need. As you can imagine, his situation can put a strain on anyone’s budget. So please give what you can, and help out a guy — and his family — who could use a little relief.

Michael’s one of the good guys. I just sent in my donation, so please, if you can, help him out.

  • Birdfight! La Russa and Pujols have ‘heated exchange’ in dugout

    http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__28/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-148054460-1274629244.jpg?ym8BuLDD59bFph4R

Let’s play choose your own adventure, MLB-style.

Here’s the situation: There are two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, your team has a four-run lead, the greatest hitter who ever lived is at the plate, a pitcher with a 4.44 career ERA is on the mound, and there’s a runner at first base. And let’s just say, hypothetically, that the baserunner is 0-for-2 on steal attempts this season and 16-for-30 lifetime.

The St. Louis Cardinals found themselves in precisely that situation on Friday. Albert Pujols(notes) was facing Angels reliever Jason Bulger(notes) while Ryan Ludwick(notes) stood on first. That’s obviously a terrific setup for Pujols, the reigning National League MVP.

But on Bulger’s first pitch, Ludwick took off for second — and he was thrown out by a mile. (Or if not literally a mile, then a significant percentage of a mile. It wasn’t close). The inning thus ended, and Pujols was denied a chance to extend the Cardinals lead. He was not pleased.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch offers these details:

Pujols flipped his bat and helmet as he returned to the dugout then smacked two trays of gum from a bench against the Cardinals dugout wall.

La Russa reprimanded Pujols, saying, "That’s enough."

Pujols responded and, according to eyewitnesses, the exchange escalated with La Russa telling Pujols at one point, "I [expletive] know how to manage."

No one can dispute that La Russa knows how to manage, obviously. He’s won five pennants and two World Series titles. But that’s just a crazy spot to attempt a steal. If Ludwick would have been successful, Pujols probably gets walked. Only Ludwick’s fantasy owners appreciated the decision.

Albert has been in a semi-slump — at least by his ridiculous standards — batting .267/.396/.400 so far in May. He hasn’t driven in a run in his last eight games. His between-innings reaction was either A) evidence of his frustration with his recent performance, or B) a total condemnation of gum.

Both La Russa and Pujols have downplayed the incident, and it sounds like nothing more than typical heat-of-battle bickering. These were Albert’s comments:

Pujols didn’t dispute that the incident happened but considered it
    insignificant.

"I was hitting and we got thrown out stealing. I wanted to hit. That’s
    all it was," he said.

Pujols added, "It’s over. We said what we said. It’s over."

Such things happen when you trail the Reds in the N.L. Central.

Not to be out-done (or out-outed), the Angels allowed Erick Aybar(notes) to lay down a bunt in the ninth inning, trailing by four. (He was credited with a sacrifice, though he was no doubt looking for a hit. Aybar has a bit more speed than Ludwick).

No word on whether objects were attacked in LA’s dugout, or whether Mike Scioscia declared that he [expletive] knows anything.
