  • Toyota and Tesla to build electric car, report says:

Toyota Motor Corp. and electric sports car maker Tesla Motors Inc. are teaming up to co-produce electric vehicles in California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The project was expected to be announced Thursday at a press conference being called by Tesla executives in Palo Alto, Calif., where the company is headquartered.

The newspaper attributed information about the Toyota-Tesla link-up to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Tesla has been producing low-volume electric sports cars that sell for more than $100,000, using bodies supplied by Lotus Engineering. Last year, the U.S. Department of Energy provided Tesla with a low-interest loan of $465 million to support a plan to produce a mass-market electric family sedan called the Model S.

The company is preparing to construct a factory to produce the Model S. Last year, Tesla hired former Toyota executive Gilbert Passin to head up its new manufacturing operations.

Toyota has so far steered clear of electric cars, unlike rival Nissan Motor Co., which will launch the electric Leaf sedan in the United States this year. Toyota’s efforts have centered heavily on hybrid-drive vehicles, including the Prius, which use both an electric motor and a gasoline engine for power.

  • The Economic Recovery Myth

“Beauty is truth; truth beauty,” the poet, John Keats famously mused in his “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” Neither Greece nor Goldman Sachs can seem to get the hang of this concept.

Grecian finances, for example, illustrate an opposing principal: deception is ugly. For more than a decade, the Greeks have engaged in a mass deception – that a revenue-starved nation could finance generous social programs. The idea was never viable, feasible or legitimate. But the Greeks wanted to believe it…and so did the rest of the European Union. They all wanted to believe that Greece’s last six defaults were a fluke – that the new and improved Greece would behave nothing like the old, profligate one.

The truth would have been better. Greece would have been better off if it had never started its game of make-believe. If, instead of pretending it could afford the unaffordable, it had devised a plan for maintaining legitimate solvency.

The Greeks didn’t do that. Instead, they joined the euro bloc and pretended to “act German.” For eleven years this charade succeeded. But the Greeks are not German. (They aren’t even French). Like many American marriages, Greek finances inhabit a chronic state of crisis, interrupted by brief interludes of calm.

But the Greeks are not unique. The nations of the West are full of deadbeats. The Spaniards and Portuguese play make-believe as well as the Greeks. And so do the Italians. But make-believe is not just a Mediterranean game; it is an international game. And no one plays it better than Uncle Sam. He also pretends to possess the means to “make good” on his debts. And so far, his creditors believe him. Your editors don’t. We think the guy is “all hat and no cattle.” We don’t think Uncle Sam can actually afford to pay the debts he’s got already, much less the trillions he’s adding to his debt load year by year.

Based on raw numbers, Uncle Sam belongs in a debtor’s prison. But that doesn’t stop him from borrowing even more money or dispensing more freebies to a populace addicted to “something-for-nothing” or enabling certain privileged financial institutions to leech from the taxpayers’ jugular.

This “system” won’t work. It is not a system at all. It is half fairy tale, half scam. America’s budget deficit, at 13% of GDP, is nearly identical to Greece’s. And America’s accumulated debts – at 86% of GDP – do not trail very far behind Greece’s at 112% of GDP. But that comparison is hardly comforting. In absolute terms, no debtor can compare to America.

As fellow Reckoner, Joel Bowman observed recently, “In a misguided effort to rescue the economy from the untold horrors of the ‘abyss,’ the prophets of modern central planning seek to transfer society’s means of production from the most to the least productive class; from private fist to public mouth; from worker to moocher; host to parasite.”

In doing so, these charlatans shackle the current generation’s liabilities to the income statements of futures generations. The nearby chart (which first appeared in the May 10, 2010 edition of The Daily Reckoning) shows the total “bare bones” funding requirement for various countries during the next three years.

    Bare Bones Funding Requirements

Specifically, this chart shows the amount of borrowing that would be required by each country to fund anticipated deficits during the next three years and to re-finance all government debt coming due in the next three years…America’s three-year funding requirement is not nothing. And America is certainly not immune to the kind of investor scrutiny that could produce a debt crisis…or a currency crisis.

In a pinch, Greece could probably borrow $30 billion here or there to plug its revenue shortfall. But in a pinch of similar relative size, the US might not be able to borrow $7 trillion…especially not when the US is unable to scrounge up cash from its own citizens.

“For the 19th consecutive month, the national budget fell disastrously short of anything close to balanced,” Joel recently observed. “According to the Treasury Department’s own figures April’s $82.7 billion deficit was almost four times the shortfall registered in the same month last year. The official tally only tells part of the story. Sadly, it was the best part.”

As Addison Wiggin observed last week in The 5-Minute Forecast, “That figure of $82.7 billion is merely the ‘BS’ figure the Treasury puts out there when it reports the deficit. The real tell is how much the national debt grew. And in April, that figure was twice the size of the ‘official’ monthly deficit – $175.6 billion.

“Don’t look now,” Addison went on, “but we’re just a couple of weeks away from the national debt breaking $13 trillion. If you must know, the exact number this morning is $12,931,157,737,293.42.”

Historically, April tends to produce a modest surplus (or at least a mitigated deficit), thanks largely to the influx of tax receipts due around the 15th of that month. But despite the administration’s assurances that the employment landscape is steadily improving, receipts were down more than $20 billion from the same month last year (2010: $245.27 billion; 2009 $266.21).

Despite the severity of America’s indebtedness, most people in positions of power refer to this disaster as if it were merely a broken water pipe. “We really should fix it,” they say, as if we could turn a valve here or replace a gasket there and get everything running smoothly again. But no quick fix is possible. In fact based on the numbers, no long fix is possible either.

This, too, is a lie…and it’s not pretty.

  • Beauty is Truth

    The primary trend is down…

Stocks fell again yesterday. The Dow lost 66 points.

The big shakeout was in the gold market – with a fall of $21.

It is unusual for gold to fall more (proportionately) than stocks. So, what’s the gold market trying to tell us? And why didn’t it mention it before?

As forecast, rates of delinquency and foreclosure are hitting new records. One of every 10 American homeowners is in trouble.

Unemployment shows little sign of improvement, with hundreds of thousands of new college grads joining the jobless this month.

And now this: prices are falling at the retail level too:

    The New York Times:

Consumer prices fell in April for the first time since early last year, and inflation rose at its slowest rate since the 1960s, a new government report said.

Energy prices led the decline, falling by 1.4 percent in April, the Labor Department said.

Consumer prices over all fell in April by 0.1 percent, the Labor Department said in its monthly report on Wednesday. The decline was the first since March 2009. Prices rose by 0.1 percent in March 2010.

The downturn was led by a decline in energy prices, especially for gasoline and natural gas, the report said. Energy prices fell by 1.4 percent in April, the department said.

Food prices rose 0.2 percent, mostly because of higher costs for meat, poultry, fish and eggs.

But without the volatile prices for food and energy, the core index for consumer prices remained flat, as they did in March. Over the 12-month period that ended in April, the core index rose 0.9 percent, which economists said was the lowest it has been since the 1960s.

Everything is going down. Stocks. Commodities. Real Estate. China.

What happened to the recovery? Is it taking a breather? Is it just ‘fragile,’ as most economists believe?

No. It hasn’t slowed down. It isn’t fragile. It just doesn’t exist.

    Paul Volcker:

“Any thoughts that participants in the financial community might have had that conditions were returning to normal should by now be shattered,” he said. “We are left with some very large questions: questions of understanding what happened, questions of what to do about it, and ultimately questions of political possibilities.”

No return to normal. No recovery. No inflation.

But before you get too comfortable with falling prices, remember that they can rise suddenly.

Dear readers will recall our Daily Reckoning position in the inflation/deflation debate. Asked whether we are headed towards inflation or deflation, we reply: ‘Yes!’

Pressed to give a more helpful response, we elaborate:

‘We will have both inflation and deflation. Probably in reverse order. Prices will fall as the private sector de-leverages. But they will eventually rise, as the public sector both leverages itself with debt and then monetizes the debt by creating more dollars.’

We are still in the early stages of what is to be a long period of restructuring and re-adjustment – a Great Correction. So far, the private sector has begun paying down and destroying debt. And the public sector has begun to increase its debt and destroy its own credit. Falling prices tell us that the private sector de-leveraging is continuing…and that the public has not yet lost faith in the government’s money. That will come.

Paul Volcker also said that “time is running out” to save US finances. You can’t go on a spree, spending trillions of dollars you don’t have, and not suffer the consequences eventually. Unless action is taken quickly, says Volcker, it will be too late.

The Wall Street Journal reports that state pension funds may already need a $1 trillion bailout.

Europe just initiated the biggest bailout to date – almost $1 trillion to bail out Greece, and spare mainly French banks from taking the losses they deserve.

But Greece is in no worse shape than the US. Deficits are about the same. So is total debt, when you include the debt of Fannie Mae and other enterprises, for whose debt the feds are now responsible. And how about funding those debts? Turns out, as a proportion of GDP, America’s funding requirements for this year are actually 50% greater than the Greeks.

One day, investors, householders and lenders will lose confidence in the full faith and credit of the United States government. Then, even in a slumpy economy, inflation will return. People will rush to get rid of their dollars. Prices will rise, fast. This crisis has a long way to go…

    And more thoughts…

Last night, we got in a cab and went over to a restaurant near the Peoples’ Bank of China and the old city gate. We ate outside, on a rooftop terrace, looking out over the city.

We were struck by awe and wonder. In the space of two decades, Beijing has turned into one of the world’s biggest, most dynamic, and most appealing cities.

It is 4 times New York. And five times LA.

But we measure everything against Baltimore…and compared to Charm City…well…nothing is quite like Baltimore. And it’s probably better that way…

Beijing is striking in many ways.

Coming out of the Grand Hyatt, we hopped in a cab and were immediately stuck in a traffic jam. In front of us was a Mercedes Maybach. We have only seen one of these cars before – in Germany. They are such expensive automobiles you rarely see them. And yet, we realized that there was not just one of them in front of us. There was one behind us too. It was as if we had blundered into a government motorcade…stuck between the president of Russia and the president of Dubai (if Dubai had a president). But this was just an ordinary street scene. And all around were other black, luxury automobiles.

In the shopping mall under the hotel you can find any luxury brand you want. Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Gucci. And you can find dozens of fancy shopping malls in Beijing. Maybe hundreds of them. Looking out on the city lights from our restaurant terrace, we could see the town stretching out for miles in every direction. Office towers, hotels, and apartment buildings – high-rise, low-rise, in between rise – north, east, south and west.

At first, we thought the center of town had probably been the site of huge government-directed investment projects. We expected the rest of the city to be miserable and poor – like the slums of Buenos Aires or ‘the projects’ in Baltimore. Not at all. Everywhere you look you see new buildings…construction cranes…bridges and overpasses…new restaurants…new shops…

When was the last time they built an important new building in Baltimore? We can’t remember. Maybe it was the Ravens’ football stadium. There have been a few piddly structures erected around the harbor. But most of the building stopped with the harbor renewal projects of the ’80s and ’90s.

Even in New York, a new building rises from time to time. But the city hasn’t changed much since the ’20s. It has already been built up and built out.

America is what it is…and what it has been. Now, it is trying to hold onto its place…while China shoulders its way up to the bar.

  • Morgan Stanley: Normally, Governments Would Have Intervened Against The Euro By Now

Morgan Stanley has an interesting model that attempts to gauge the likelihood of currency intervention by the G3 economies (United States, Europe, and Japan). While there hasn’t been coordinated currency intervention since 2000, the potential for a repeat is rising due euro volatility, which appears excessive.

    Chart

    Morgan Stanley’s Sophia Drossos:

Based on our estimates, the model currently predicts a 30% probability of coordinated currency intervention compared with the long-term average of 12% (Exhibit 1). According to our framework, probabilities below 20% are consistent with a low level of intervention risk, probabilities between 20% to 30% are considered a signal of caution, while probabilities above 30% suggest a high risk of FX intervention.

    Chart

Still, Morgan Stanley believes the euro remains over-valued against the dollar, thus mitigating other factors, such as the excessive momentum shown above which argue for coordinated currency market intervention from the G3.

Thus it could take more currency volatility than in the past to push to G3 into action, because from the look of the model above, probabilities are historically high yet we haven’t seen any intervention. (We’d also suggest the hypothesis that perhaps the model needs a tweak!)

Yet for traders, just be aware that government intervention is a growing risk.

  • Massey CEO Pushes Blame for Deadly Blast on Government

Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship testifies before a Senate committee on Thursday. (Pete Marovich/ZUMApress.com)

Under fire for his company’s safety record following a deadly mining accident last month, Massey CEO Don Blankenship tried to shift the blame Thursday, telling Senate lawmakers that interference from federal regulators might very well have caused the disaster.

Not only did the Mine Safety and Health Administration force Massey to alter its ventilation system at the doomed Upper Big Branch Mine, Blankenship charged, but “just days” before the tragedy, MSHA had also certified that the mine was in “good condition,” he claimed.

“We complied with MSHA safety orders even when we strenuously disagreed with them and believed them to be detrimental to the health and safety of the mine,” Blankenship told lawmakers on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor. “They forced us to ventilate backwards by not approving [our] plan.”

Though investigators have yet to determine the source of the blast, mine-safety experts suspect that it was caused by a buildup of methane combined with an accumulation of airborne coal dust — two conditions that mine ventilation systems are designed to alleviate.

To top it all off, Blankenship added, MSHA now wants a closed-door investigation, which he fears could allow the agency to clear itself of wrongdoing without the public knowing all the facts.

The message was clear, and it wasn’t lost on Sen. Robert Byrd. The 92-year-old West Virginia Democrat told Joseph Main, the head of MSHA, “This sounds like someone is trying to blame your agency for the death of 29 miners.”

Main was quick to push back, arguing that the ultimate responsibility for miners’ safety lies with the mine operator. “MSHA did not run the Upper Big Branch Mine — Massey Energy did,” he said. “I have no clue what the basis of [Blankenship’s] argument is.”

The comments arrive as federal, state and independent investigators continue to probe the cause of the April 5 disaster. The tragedy, the most deadly mine accident in 40 years, has put the spotlight on Massey’s safety record, reputed to be the worst in the business.

Blankenship defended Massey’s safety record Thursday, maintaining that the number of citations it’s racked up is “probably about average” for the industry. If it’s higher, he added, that’s because mining in Central Appalachia involves “difficult underground conditions,” and because Massey produces more coal in the region than anyone else.

Yet MSHA data don’t support that argument. In 2009, for instance, the Upper Big Branch racked up 515 safety violations while producing roughly 1.2 million tons of coal. Meanwhile, the Robinson Run mine, a Consol-owned operation near the Upper Big Branch, produced 5.5 million tons of coal in the same year while receiving just 158 citations.

The discrepancy wasn’t lost on Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, who accused Massey of nurturing a culture where production is prioritized over safety, and workers are scared to file complaints for fear of losing their jobs. “This isn’t the average,” Roberts said of Massey’s safety violations. “This is deplorable.”

“Mr. Blankenship,” Byrd added, “Massey is not average.”

Thursday’s hearing marked Blankenship’s first appearance before Congress since the April 5 blast. But you wouldn’t have known it by the turnout. Although two Capitol police officers roamed the room, no protestors surfaced. And aside from Byrd, only two other Democrats — Sens. Tom Harkin (Iowa) and Patty Murray (Wash.) — attended.

No Republicans showed up at all.

Its purpose is to support life-loggers wanting to track and document their everyday movements as digital memories. In combination with other physical sensors or additional image-recognition algorithms, the potential opportunities are enormous.

Unlike a regular digital camera or a cameraphone, Vicon Revue does not have a viewfinder or a display that can be used to frame photos. Instead, it is fitted with a wide-angle lens that maximizes its field-of-view and ensures that nearly everything in the wearer’s view is captured by the camera. Next to the 640x480px camera sensor, the device also contains several sensors, such as a temperature sensor, a light color and intensity sensor, an infra-red motion detector, a multi-axis accelerometer, and a 3-axis magnetometer (compass). Images are downloaded at the end of the user’s day, which will hopefully form the basis of some interesting visualizations.

  • Valerie Bertinelli is Getting Married for the Second Time

The American actress, Valerie Bertinelli is now engaged to her long time boyfriend Tom Vitale. She revealed the issue in the June issue of AARP The Magazine.

“I’ve never had a male friend like I have with Tom,” she said to the magazine of Tom Vitale, who she has been dating for nearly six years now. It is like she had a wonderful six years with Tom and now is the right time for them to get married. Tom proposed to Valerie during their trip in Florence, Italy. As we can remember, Valerie was married to ’80s rock legend Eddie Van Halen so this will be her second marriage. She has a son named Wolfgang who is now 19 years old.

Valerie starred as Barbara Cooper on TV’s One Day at A time; however, she grew up to a chubby actress. But recently, the actress worked hard in loosing weight. She even stated at her blog in Jenny Craig.com “While running and training for the marathon, my weight crept up a bit. Could be the extra muscle, a shift in extra carbs from training the week before…In fact, I know, logically, all of the reasons for my little weight gain (a couple of pounds), but that number on the scale still haunts me sometimes. Even at 50. Even at the top of my game. Now, the old me would have probably said, ‘Screw it, let’s break out the jalapeno poppers.’” She further stated “Sure, maintenance takes work — I’ve always joked that losing the weight was the easy part — but I live a very controlled and scheduled life (well, relatively) — and I always try and make sure I’m one step ahead of myself. So those few extra pounds were a big thing for me — regardless of my being in the best shape of my life.

Now, she looks stunning, and it is a big celebration for her as she is now getting married.

Remote control exhaust system offers range of exhaust notes

Without doubt, one of man’s greatest delights is to experience firsthand the stereo staccato of an exhaust system trumpeting the sound of a high performance engine being controlled by an expert touch on a mountain road. Sadly, the same engine, exhaust and expert touch become highly anti-social in urban confines, so German tuning company Cobra has come up with the perfect invention for socially-responsible petrolheads – a remote-control exhaust system. At the push of a button, one can engage an electronically controlled flap on the twin 120mm tailpipes, changing the noise from subdued and refined sportiness through to unrestrained and joyful F1-madness … and back again…

Are your present health conditions improving?

I wanted to share a few success stories of people taking our WSN Diabetic Pack.

    Read on:

&quot I stopped taking my diabetes meds yesterday. This morning at 6 am my blood sugar was at 162. I’ve been taking the supplements and sticking to the recommended foods to eat. I had a three-egg cheese and tomato omelet at 12 noon. At 2 PM my blood sugar was at 172. I did my elliptical for 32 minutes and now my blood sugar is 132. REALLY GREAT! Can’t remember the last time I had these numbers. And we’re just getting started.&quot

    From Rich Wiehe from Michigan

    * * * * * * * * * * *

&quot I love the WSN Diabetic Pack products. The first month I lost 5 pounds from the areas where I was always big, because my insulin resistance has decreased. I’ve been exercising too. And also, I have been able to get off the diabetic drug Avandia, which is the best part. Thank you for your product.&quot

    From Rhonda Empson in Pennsylvania

    * * * * * * * * * * *

&quot My fasting blood sugar was brought down to around 200 using 1,000 mg of Metformin in the AM and PM. It came further down to around 150 using Amaryl, a drug that pushes the pancreas to produce more insulin.

&quot Within two weeks of using your Diabetic Pack, increasing exercise, and cutting back on carbs, my blood sugar dropped to below normal. I was actually excited to see the monitor read ‘low.’

&quot Now, one month later, I no longer take Amaryl and I’ve cut my Metformin down to 500 mg AM/PM. My blood sugar is in the 120’s now, and sometimes high 90’s.

&quot My eyesight has improved, my energy level has gone up, and I’m no longer worried about this issue now that I’ve seen the results. Your Nerve Support Formula for nerve damage works as well.&quot

    Quote of the Week

    Monsanto, Haiti’s &quot New Earthquake&quot

&quot A new earthquake&quot is what Haitian peasant farmer leader Chavannes Jean-Baptiste of the Peasant Movement of Papay (MPP) called the news that Monsanto will be dumping 60,000 seed sacks (475 tons) of hybrid corn seeds and vegetable seeds on Haiti, seeds doused with highly toxic fungicides such as thiram, known to be extremely dangerous to farm workers. Hybrid seeds, like GMO seeds (in contrast to Creole heirloom or organic seeds) require lots of water, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides. In addition if a small farmer tries to save hybrid seeds after harvest, hybrid seeds usually do not &quot breed true&quot or grow very well in the second season, forcing the now-indentured peasant to buy seeds from Monsanto or one of the other hybrid/GMO seed monopolies in perpetuity. Monsanto wanted initially to dump GMO seeds on Haiti, but even the corrupt Haitian government knew that this would spark a rebellion, so Monsanto cleverly decided to dump hybrid seeds instead. The Haitian small farmers organization has committed to burning Monsanto’s seeds, and has called for a march to protest the corporation’s presence in Haiti on June 4, for World Environment Day.

    Monsanto’s Poison Pills for Haiti

Take Action in Solidarity with Haitian Farmers Who Vow to Burn Monsanto’s Toxic Fungicide-Coated Hybrid Seeds

Since gaining their independence from France more than 200 years ago in a bloody slave uprising, Haitian farmers have wisely protected their seeds and nurtured native crop varieties. They know that true food security is maintained by farmers who save, trade and breed indigenous seeds using traditional organic methods.

As Chavannes Jean-Baptiste, the Executive Director of the Peasant Movement of Papay (MPP), wrote earlier this year, &quot We need to establish seed banks and have silos where we can store our Creole seeds. Local, organic seeds are the basis of food sovereignty. It’s urgent that Haitians buy local seeds. … What’s the danger we face today? It’s that food aid from USAID and others is getting dumped in the country.&quot

USAID and Monsanto have a poison pill for Haiti, designed to the make the island nation into a slave colony once again, except this time they won’t be slaves for France, but rather for Monsanto and corporate agribusiness. Join the Haitian people and the growing global movement of Millions Against Monsanto.

Monsanto Plant Shut Down By Dutch Activists

Check out this great activist-produced video documenting Monday’s action shutting down Monsanto’s Dutch offices and greenhouses.

On Monday, 50 people with the action group ‘Roundup Monsanto’ blocked both gates of the Monsanto seed company near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. ‘Roundup Monsanto’ wants Monsanto to back out of the seed market, and demands an end to patents on seeds and living organisms. Monsanto and other agro-chemical multinationals are lobbying the Dutch government and the EU for legislative changes that would make it easier for large companies to take control of the seed market and food production.
