  • Five Dividend Stocks To Buy On A Dip

Did May 6th frighten or excite you? I received a few emails from frightened dividend investors letting me know they were getting out of the market, while others asked if this was the beginning of another significant downturn. The first group are destined to always lose money in the market (sell low/buy high) and my answer to the second group was,  ‘I hope so!’ Let me explain.

As a long-term dividend investor I love buying blue-chip companies when they go on sale and there is no underlying fundamental business reason.  If you can buy a Ferrari at the price of a Camaro, most people would consider that a good thing, but for some reason many long-term investors fret whenever there is a major clearance sale on the stocks they want to own.

I keep a list of great stocks that I would love to buy or add to my current position.  Here are a few on that list:

Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) | Yield @ Buy Price: 3.57%
    Buy Price: $38.11 | Recent Price: $41.80 | Premium: 9.68% | Analysis

International Business Machines (IBM) | Yield @ Buy Price: 2.18%
    Buy Price: $119.11 | Recent Price: $131.19 | Premium: 10.14%

Pepsico, Inc. (PEP) | Yield @ Buy Price: 3.04%
    Buy Price: $59.28 | Recent Price: $66.07 | Premium: 11.5%

Genuine Parts Company (GPC) | Yield @ Buy Price: 4.68%
    Buy Price: $35.04 | Recent Price: $41.25 | Premium: 17.7% | Analysis

Eaton Vance Corp. (EV) | Yield @ Buy Price: 2.59%
    Buy Price: $24.67 | Recent Price: $32.80 | Premium: 32.93%

If the market drops, there is no need to panic if you are a long-term, buy-and-hold investor. While others are content to give away their stocks, I will pull out my wish list and see if any of my targets ready for harvesting.

Full Disclosure: Long ADP, PEP, GPC. See a list of all my income holdings here.

  • London Wants To Offer Full WiFi Coverage… But How Will That Work With The Digital Economy Act?

Rik was the first of a few of you to send in the news that the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is claiming that London will be fully covered by WiFi in time for the 2012 Olympic games. Of course, considering that the UK Parliament just passed the Digital Economy Act, which calls for carefully limiting access to the internet for people accused (not convicted) of infringement online, it makes you wonder how that’s going to work. Even if Ofcom has said that the DEA rules won’t initially apply to wireless providers, it does seem a bit odd to have the government offering a service like this. Once again, we’re seeing how the government has these two competing issues that don’t play well together: getting more broadband availability, while looking to help out the entertainment industry by kicking people off the internet at the same time. Who will be the first Olympic athlete kicked offline for downloading some music during the games?

  • A Social Network Safe Made for Kids

Togetherville, a social network for children ages 6 to 10, aims to attract children to a more age-appropriate setting. The site launches Tuesday night. The accounts must be created by the parents using their own Facebook logins. Parents are able to approve or reject their children’s friends and see what activities or games their children are up to. Mandeep Singh Dhillon, CEO and co-founder, said “The adults participate directly. Which is why this is not a digital babysitter.” “The first platform that really integrates young children’s ability to use the Web with their grownups close by.”Kids will have separate logins to Togetherville, and the site looks different depending whether the child or the parent is logged in. There are games, pre-screened YouTube videos and other activities for children. Stephen  Balkam, CEO of the Washington DC-based noprofit Family Online Safety Institute, termed the site as a “much safer environment.” The site aims to keep children safe from cyberbullying and other dangers online.

There are many kid-friendly sites at the site, one of which is Disney’s Club Penguin which has a social-networking aspect. Togetherville offers children their first taste of social networking where they will use their real-life identities and real-life relationships. The site is also free of advertisements. • ‘Quiet cars’ proposal introduced to Congress

Hybrid and electric vehicles may be the auto industry’s solution for more stringent fuel economy regulations, but they also pose a new threat. Because of their silent operation, hybrid and electric vehicles can pose a threat to surround pedestrians, prompting the introduction of new “quiet cars” laws.

Championed by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, the proposed regulations would require automakers to equip hybrid, electric and other silently operated vehicles with an audible warning to alert surrounding pedestrians. The proposal is expected to be attached to the proposed auto safety laws currently in front of Congress.

The regulations “will help to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially those who are blind, as an increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles are sold,” the National Federation of the Blind, American Council of the Blind said in a letter to Congress. The proposal would require “for an alert sound that allows blind and other pedestrians to reasonably detect a nearby electric or hybrid vehicle.”

If approved, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would begin writing the rules for the “quiet cars” legislation within 18 months, with the rules to be finalize within three years.

  • Closing Time: Luke Scott, temporary power to go

It’s been a strange year so far for American League power. Go back to your March projections, see what you expected from Paul Konerko, Ty Wigginton, Jose Bautista, Alex Gonzalez and Andruw Jones. Auction bucks have been trumped, at least temporarily, by waiver luck.

With that theme in mind, let’s talk about Luke Scott(notes). I’m not going to promise you anything long-term on this stock, but we’ve seen him go on power runs before and he’s smoking hot right now.

Scott knocked a pair of homers at Camden Yards Tuesday, giving him seven in 45 May at-bats. He wasn’t picking on a scrub pitcher here; the taters came against Kansas City ace Zack Greinke(notes). And both of the home runs were absolute rockets; the first one was more the towering type, while the second one left the park almost instantly.

Scott is never going to get into the All-Star Game without a ticket, but he’s not a bad power source in certain circumstances. He’s got 36 career homers over 521 career at-bats at Camden Yards. He’s a career .504 slugger against right-handed pitching. And he’s one of those notorious streak hitters; perhaps you remember the late May tear he went on last season (eight homers in 10 days). He’s not a perfect player, but if you need a power boost, there’s a case to be made for Scott.

The Orioles don’t have any home games left this week, but Scott still offers some short-term cachet. He’s a decent play at Texas the next two days (up against a pair of right-handed starters), and Scott should get some good hacks in against Washington’s Craig Stammen(notes) Saturday (the Nats throw lefties Friday and Sunday). Scott has been successful in both of these stadiums, albeit in small samples: he’s got two homers in 30 career at-bats at Arlington, and he’s gone deep twice in three games at Nationals Park.

If you’re looking for a National League version of Scott, how about Cincinnati’s Jonny Gomes(notes)? The hack-tastistic Red is on a 20-for-49 binge this month with three homers and 13 RBIs, and he’s got some nice matchups coming up (Kenshin Kawakami(notes) on Wednesday, and three games at Cleveland this weekend). Gomes is available in 93 percent of Yahoo! leagues as we go to press, while Scott is 88-percent available. Give these guys a tryout over the rest of the week.

There’s your lead (or lede) item, amigos. I’ll be back in a little bit with 850 more words, give or take a few.

  • Study Reveals That Husbands Can Also Experience Postpartum Depression

This is for the husbands out there whose wife is on their postpartum stage. Do you know that you too can be affected by the depression that your wife is experiencing during this stage?

As we all know, only the mothers who had just undergone labor are experiencing postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is a depression that occurs soon after giving birth. During this depression, the mother feels worthless, fatigued, restless and anxious. The husband should understand the symptoms of postpartum depression but how if he experiences the symptoms as well?

A study revealed that one in ten fathers and one in five mothers experience postpartum depression. The researcher, James Paulson of Eastern Virginia, stated that depression affects both parents and both parents should be on the look out for it. According to the research that was released on Tuesday, the authors estimated that 10 percent of the fathers experience depression before or soon after the birth of a child. For comparison, about 5 percent of men in the general population will suffer depression over the course of one year. This suggests that depression in expecting or new dads “represents a significant public health concern,”

Yes, this is a public health concern since it affects every family in the community. Now, not only the mothers are being depressed but  the fathers too. This will not have good effect on children; since depressed parents will not be able to take good care of them. During the post partum stage, the fathers are the ones who are likely to be more involved in parenting. But with the findings of the study, we should be alarmed and try to avoid this kind of situations.

  • How To Sync Exchange Calendar With Thunderbird and Lightning

Yesterday I posted about setting up a PGP key server in Ubuntu for use at work. That is one piece of the puzzle. The second piece of the PGP puzzle is integrating PGP with your email client so that you can easily send and receive encrypted messages.

I always recommend gpg4win for Windows users looking for a free OpenPGP solution in Windows. In Linux, GPG is built in, but in Windows you have to find 3rd party software to get the job done. In Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007, the Outlook plug-in that comes with gpg4win works great. The problem? We are now using Outlook 2010 in the office. Sometimes it sucks to be bleeding edge because old software isn’t always compatible.

You know what works well for PGP/GPG though? Mozilla Thunderbird with the Enigmail extension. The problem with Thunderbird is that it doesn’t natively support Microsoft Exchange. Sure there are tricks to get it to work, but in reality the best way is to enable secure IMAP and SMTP to your Exchange server. You can easily do that on ports 993 and 587 the way Google does with Gmail. If you don’t know how to do that, look it up because it is beyond the scope of this post!

lightning Anyhoo, back on track. So I configured Secure IMAP/SMTP on my Exchange server, and got Thunderbird working fine… Well, except Calendar and Contacts. The contact issue wasn’t a big deal because I just imported them in from Outlook. My Calendar however is dynamic, and I like it to have a two-way sync with Exchange. Also, there isn’t a built-in calendar for Thunderbird. That is where Lightning comes in. Lightning is a calendar extension for Thunderbird and Seamonkey.

Okay, so I installed Lightning, but it doesn’t automagically start working with Exchange. For that I needed yet one more extension. It comes as a private 3rd party extension called The Microsoft Data Provider for Thunderbird Lightning. Here are some of the features it provides:

    • Creating, modifying, deleting calendar items.
    • Inviting attendees to meetings and sending meeting requests.
    • Free/Busy information when inviting other Exchange users to meetings.
    • Notifications for meeting requests
    • Configuration autodiscovery

Now, with the exception of accepting/declining inbound meeting requests (Still have to use OWA for that) I can fully manage my calendar through Thunderbird and have it sync with Exchange!

Are you using Thunderbird  with Exchange? Know of any other cool plug-ins and extensions to make it work better? Do you use PGP with Outlook 2010? What plug-in do you use for that? Let me know in the comments!

Singapore-based architecture and design firm WOHA has developed the Alila Villas Uluwatu hotel complex in Bali, Indonesia. The complex is designed to be environmentally friendly and is constructed from materials found locally. The hotel has 50 hotel suites and 35 residential villas.

    alila villas uluwatu_1

Instead of using typical steep Balinese pavilions, the buildings are influenced by local farmers and their terraces of loosely piled limestone boulders.

All construction materials have been sourced locally. Local craftsmen in Java and Bali have made the interior furniture from coconut timber and bamboo. Other environmentally responsible systems included in the hotel complex are rainwater collection and water recycling system, collection of gray water and using it for watering plant and toilet flushing. Moreover, low energy lighting is used and dry-climate vegetation is included to reduce water usage.

Ajay Bhatt co-unventor of the USB
    Bruce V. Bigelow wrote:

In a move that borrows a page from Intel’s “Rock Stars of Engineering” advertising campaign, a San Diego non-profit group is organizing a program that will bring the aspiring rock stars of San Diego’s life sciences industry into local classrooms.

The pilot program, funded by a $100,000 grant from the Cambridge, MA-based Biogen Idec Foundation, will recruit entrepreneurial founders of early stage biotech companies to talk about their breakthrough innovations and why they started their companies. The idea is to get young people excited about studying science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), says Duane Roth, who heads Connect, the 25-year-old non-profit organization that supports technology and entrepreneurship in San Diego.

“So many things have been tried before,” says Roth, who frets that American students just don’t relate to STEM education or see the career possibilities. “We think young people—7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th-graders—relate more to products than to lectures.” By arranging to have entrepreneurs talk about their technologies, Roth says, students can grasp how inventions gets commercialized, and what it takes to bring a product to market.

One early recruit, for example, is Jack DeFranco, CEO of San Diego-based Targeson, which invents ultrasound contrast agents used to detect disease at the molecular level, before someone who is ill even shows any symptoms.

    The real Ajay Bhatt

The speaker program is reminiscent of last year’s Intel ad campaign that has swooning workplace groupies surrounding a wonkish, middle-aged man as a screen graphic reads, “Ajay Bhatt, co-inventor of USB,” which is followed by a message that says, “Our rock stars aren’t like your rock stars.” (An actor was portraying the real Ajay Bhatt.) I’m also reminded of a photo spread in GQ magazine last year of the “Rockstars of Science” that paired Eric Topol, the prominent Scripps’ cardiologist and translational medicine researcher, with real-life singers like Seal, Sheryl Crow, and Josh Groban.

I think it is a great idea,” says Larry Bock, a longtime life sciences venture investor in San Diego who heard about the pilot program in March.
