    AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

    Pros & Cons:

    Pros

    • Get UK TV Guide while mobile
    • Very easy to use
    • Fast Scrolling with no noticeable lag

    Cons

    • No programme info for the coming week
    • Bumpy set-up process
    • The app icon is HORRIBLE

    Features:

The TV-Guide UK app seeks to compete with a number of other apps out there doing exactly the same thing. The only way that they are obviously differentiating themselves from the competition seems to be by charging for an ad free version. Tempting!

On start up you choose the channels you are interested in from what seems like a pretty impressive list ranging from the channels you will very obviously want (BBC) and those that might charitably be considered to cater to the niche market (Bomerang – Whatever that is). There is even programme information for the Adult Channel. The idea of a regular watcher of the Adult Channel needing to plan his (or her’s) viewing of that channel really is very creepy indeed.

Once you have chosen your favoured channels you will be directed back to the app home screen which by default displays all your channels in a list format with their currently showing programme highlighted, in addition to the subsequent two programmes.  From the same page you can filter these channels with the tabs along the top to show only your sports or movies channels. This is a nice feature but does not allow for user defined filtering which would have been awesome.

A click on a channel brings up a drab, vertically scrolling page of that channel’s schedule for the day. Not even a thumbnail of the channel’s logo is used to punctuate the vast swathes of boring text assaulting the eye. From here you can set notifications by long pressing on a programme and choosing from the predefined reminder intervals.

    Usefulness:

This app works pretty well as far as it goes. The scrolling is smooth and everything works intuitively. You will not need any instructions or to visit any forums to get the best out of this little guide. Unfortunately, there is no channel info for any day other than today. This has been a pretty critical factor in my evaluation of its usefulness. Also, what is the purpose of setting a reminder 6 hours in advance of a programme airing? Do people really start a 6 hour long build up to a new episode of Doctor Who? Very strange.

    Ease of Use:

The app took a little while to bed down on my HTC Hero with lots of crashing and incredibly long load times at the beginning. Once the app was set up and I began using it however I found it to be incredibly easy to quickly navigate around the app.

    Frequently Used:

I really like to know what’s going to be on TV so I expected to use this app a lot. Unfortunately the lack of channel information for the week to come meant that I used it pretty infrequently, preferring to use competitor’s apps.

    Interface:

The interface, on the whole, is really nice with clean white backgrounds and fast scrolling text. Unfortunately it is let down here and there by a few issues already mentioned. Just gimme a thumbnail or something on the channel schedule page, come on.

  • Costa Rican named as U.N. climate chief

    by Agence France-Presse

UNITED NATIONS – U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has named Costa Rica’s Christiana Figueres to be the organization’s top official on climate change, his spokesman announced Monday.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said the 53-year-old Costa Rican, currently San Jose’s climate-change negotiator, would succeed Yvo de Boer of the Netherlands as the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

“Ms. Figueres is an international leader on strategies to address global climate change and brings to this position a passion for the issue, deep knowledge of the stakeholders, and valuable hands-on experience from the nonprofit sector and the private sector,” the spokesman said.

De Boer tendered his resignation after last year’s Copenhagen climate change talks, which ended in widespread disappointment with only vague promises by nations to cut emissions.

Figueres is to assume her post on July 1, five months before the next round of scheduled climate change talks in the Mexican resort city of Cancun.

She has been a negotiator of the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol since 1995 and has played a role in designing key climate-change instruments.

Chief U.S. climate negotiator Todd Stern welcomed Figueres’ appointment, calling her “well-qualified with a deep background in U.N. climate-change negotiations.”

“The United States looks forward to working with Ms. Figueres and partners around the world to build on the progress made in Copenhagen to meet the climate-change challenge,” Stern said in a statement.

Environmental group Greenpeace noted that Costa Rica has set an ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2021, “the type of attitude we need on the global stage.”

“We hope she can really engage all countries in a fast-moving dialogue to get agreement on a global deal that will save the world from dangerous climate change,” said Wendel Trio, Greenpeace’s climate policy coordinator.

Figueres’s family has a long history of work in government and international affairs. Her father Jose Figueres Ferrer was a three-time president of Costa Rica who abolished Costa Rica’s military in 1948. Her mother, Karen Olsen Beck, was born in the United States to Danish immigrants and later adopted Costa Rican nationality. Figueres’s older brother, Jose Maria Figueres Olsen, was elected president of Costa Rica for four years at the age of 39, the nation’s youngest president in the 20th century.

Figueres completed her university studies at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and at the London School of Economics and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

  • NHTSA reportedly investigating C5 Corvette over leaky fuel tanks

We don’t need to tell you why a leaky fuel tank can be a big hazard. Something about flammable liquid seeping out from underneath a car raises a huge red flag, and now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 33,000 2004 model year Chevrolet Corvettes over this very issue. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA has received 30 complaints from owners claiming that either liquid fuel or fuel vapor has been leaking from a tank.

Alan Adler, a spokesperson for GM, says that the automaker isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents resulting from this problem. Furthermore, GM plans to fully cooperate with NHTSA on this investigation in order to promptly resolve the problem. In 12 of the 30 complaints filed with NHTSA, a fuel tank was replaced or identified as the source of the leak, and we assume that a quick recall will be in order to prevent further instances.

  • Video: Game based on the awesomely NSFW “Truckers Delight” film-clip comes to iPhone

    Truckers Delight iPhone Game
You may or may not have seen the totally ridiculous, totally NSFW, 8-bit brilliance that is the film-clip for Flairs’ Trucker’s Delight (note: if 8-bit boobs, poop or misogynistic truckers offend, don’t click that link. Editors Note: Heads up – you’ll need to check your maturity at the door.).

Have you watched it yet? To me, the logical progression from creating a film-clip based on an imaginary game is to make an actual game based on a film-clip based on an imaginary game.

And so I present to you, the first episode of Truckers Delight for iPhone and iPod Touch.

For the merest of $2.99 at the App Store, you can chase after blondes (and their well-groomed poodles), take down rival bikies, and steer 16-wheels of pain with flagrant disregard for all those “road rules” that The Man keeps sticking us truckies* with.

  • Loop current is now drawing the BP oil disaster to Florida Keys – Toxicologist: “We could be getting to the point that puts coral over the edge”; Masters: “a major ecological disaster … cannot be ruled out.”

    Loop

On May 6 I wrote, “the dispersant-laced oil spill may soon be entrained in the Loop Current, which is part of the Gulf Stream, sweeping it toward the Florida Keys, home to America’s biggest coral reef” (see “Out of Sight: BP’s dispersants are toxic — but not as toxic as dispersed oil“).

Now that worst-case scenario has played out.  And as meteorologist Jeff Masters explains:

The latest surface current forecasts from NOAA’s HYCOM model show that oil could continue pouring into the Loop Current for most of the rest of the week. It is highly uncertain how diluted the oil might get on its voyage to northwestern Cuba and the Florida Keys this week, but the possibility for a major ecological disaster in the fragile Keys ecosystem cannot be ruled out.

For my earlier post, I spoke to toxicologist Carys Mitchelmore, a professor at the University of Maryland’s Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, an expert on the impact of dispersants and dispersed oil on marine life.

She is particularly concerned about corals because they are “under siege from multiple sources, including human sewage, metal pollution, and of course they are dealing with issues from global climate change including warming and ocean acidification.”  See for instance, “Nature Geoscience study: Oceans are acidifying 10 times faster today than 55 million years ago when a mass extinction of marine species occurred.”

“We could be getting to the point that puts coral over the edge,” in terms of its long-term survival, she warned.

    Brad Johnson has more:

Jeff Hoffmeyer, a marine scientist with the University of Southern Mississippi Center for Fisheries Research and Development, told the Wonk Room two weeks ago of the frightening consequences of the slick getting caught in the Loop Current:

“If it gets entrained into the Loop [Current], it’s up into the Atlantic. And who knows where it’s going to go from there. As it moves around Florida, the next or another critical area would be the Florida Keys and the coral reefs we have down there. I don’t even want to think about that area being covered in oil. Once it works its way up the East Coast and potentially crossing the Atlantic, it could be far-reaching.”

Over 625,000 gallons of toxic dispersants have been sprayed on the oil slick, including 45,000 gallons of dispersants injected directly at the wellhead — creating an invisible toxic cloud of unknown size a mile below the sea surface.

Update: Tar balls have washed up on Key West beaches. If they are from the leading edge of the oil gusher, that would mean that some oil already has been entrained in the Loop Current for several days.

  • High School Students Inspired by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. During Earth Day Visit to EPA

“Can I get my picture taken with him? Can we please go on a tour to see the solar panels? What was your college major? Do you know much about nanotechnology?” were just a few of the questions posed by high school students who visited EPA’s Research Triangle Park campus on Earth Day 2010 to hear environmental advocate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speak.

Outdoors, under clear blue skies, the 40 students from Hillside, Jordan, Northern, and Southern High Schools in Durham focused their full attention on Mr. Kennedy as he passionately shared multiple stories and statistics to demonstrate that protecting our nation’s environmental resources makes economic sense. The hidden costs of getting our energy from non-renewable resources and accounting for the true costs of fossil fuels, as well as developing the infrastructure for renewable energy like solar, wind, and geothermal power, were themes that particularly inspired the students.

No texting, no talking. All eyes were glued on Kennedy, a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, throughout his 1-hour talk as he offered a range of topics to pique their teenage minds as they consider subjects to explore in college and as careers: environmental science, engineering, law, politics, environmental justice, math, and history to name a few. In addition to Kennedy’s environmental anecdotes, he also shared personal stories including his trips to the White House as a child to visit his uncle, John F. Kennedy, in the Oval Office. I was in awe.

EarthDay2010-Robert-F-KenneAs Kennedy’s inspirational talk concluded, we did have many questions answered. YES, you can get your picture taken with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and YES you can take a tour to learn about our newly-installed solar panels. Students from Northern High School went on an impromptu tour of our environmentally-friendly building, learned about EPA’s air pollution research, and talked to several employees about their educations and their jobs. As for the nanotechnology question posed to me by a high school junior, I was “saved” at the last minute in the EPA Café line by running into a co-worker who does research in the area.

You can learn more about Kennedy’s Earth Day talk at EPA at http://www.allbusiness.com/government/government-bodies-offices/14335415-1.html or http://www.dpsnc.net/news/frontpage-news/a-kennedy-kind-of-earth-day/?searchterm=kennedy%20epa. About the Author: Kelly Leovic manages EPA’s Environmental and Community Outreach Program in Research Triangle Park and has worked for the EPA as an environmental engineer since 1987, though this is the first time she had the opportunity to hear a Kennedy speak in person. She has three children and loves to inspire them, and anyone else who will listen, to protect our environment.

  • Protesting Massey

Today marks Massey Energy’s annual shareholders meeting in Richmond, Va, and they’re getting quite a reception from environmentalists and members of the United Mine Workers of America, who are picketing the event by the hundreds. The Wall Street Journal provides some context:

The UMWA has been one of Massey’s fiercest critics since the explosion at Massey’s Upper Big Branch mine last month, the worst coal mining disaster in 40 years. The union, which has lost organizing elections at the company’s mines in recent years, has long had an antagonistic relationship with Massey. The union represents some Massey employees who work at coal preparation plants.

A number of Massey miners — both former and current — have come forward since last month’s tragedy with allegations that the company simply doesn’t prioritize safety in its mines, particularly if those measures hinder the production of coal.

Massey has rejected those claims, insisting that its safety record is at least as good as those of its competitors. Indeed, the Journal reports that the company — despite a damning record of safety at the UBB mine  – is still lashing out at its critics.

Prior to the protests, a Massey spokeswoman said, “We respect the right of those with a narrow political agenda to express their views.”

Massey CEO Don Blankenship, whose own political agenda inspired a recent $30,400 donation to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, will testify before the Senate Thursday.

  • UN rights chief urges peaceful resolution to Thailand conflict

[JURIST] UN High Commissioner for Human Rights [official website] Navi Pillay [official profile] on Monday urged both the Thai government and anti-government protesters to seek a peaceful resolution [press release] to the current conflict [JURIST news archive]. Expressing deep concern at the escalating violence that has left dozens dead and many more injured, Pillay called on both sides to avoid further clashes and seek a diplomatic solution. Pillay called on the government to use force only in accordance with international human rights standards, warning that the situation could easily get out of hand:

To prevent further loss of life, I appeal to the protestors to step back from the brink, and the security forces to exercise maximum restraint in line with the instructions given by the Government. Ultimately, this situation can only be resolved by negotiation. I urge leaders to set aside pride and politics for the sake of the people of Thailand.

Pillay also noted that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva [official website; BBC profile] has agreed to set up an independent fact-finding mission to inquire into the recent violence, stressing that the investigation should be impartial and thorough.

Last week, a Thai court sentenced 27 protesters [JURIST report] to six months in prison. The accused are members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship [party website, in Thai], also known as red shirts [BBC backgrounder], who support ousted [JURIST report] prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra [BBC profile; JURIST news archive]. Last month, Thailand’s pro-government People’s Alliance for Democracy Network [party website, in Thai; BBC backgrounder], known as yellow shirts, called for a declaration of martial law [JURIST report] to quell the anti-government movement spearheaded by the red shirts. Earlier in April, Vejjajiva announced that he was prepared to negotiate [JURIST report] with red shirt protesters once they cease their illegal conduct. Because of the mounting violence, Abhisit has imposed a state of emergency [JURIST report] in Bangkok and neighboring provinces.

  • HTC Wildfire headed to Virgin Mobile UK

The relatively budget minded HTC Wildfire is heading to the relatively budget minded carrier, Virgin Mobile UK. The Wildfire is expected to launch in Q3 2010 in European and Asian markets and is a great addition to Virgin Mobile UK’s growing stable of Android phones. Virgin Mobile UK focuses a lot on competitively priced pay-as-you-go plans so it leaves no doubt that the Wildfire is targeted for the "entry level" customers. In the UK, Virgin Mobile doesn’t actually have their own network (they use T-Mobile as their backbone) but we’re sure users will hardly notice. • Apple trademarks their retail stores and iDisk icon

Watch out, Joe’s Bait and Tackle, you better not have a big, open glass door with light wooden tables along the middle and light wooden shelves lining the walls on which you will display your wares, including, but not limited to laptops and computers. Apple has that entire color scheme and layout on lockdown, so don’t even think about it.

That’s right: Apple trademarked their retail stores. Here’s the skinny:

The correspondent listed for is LISA G. WIDUP of APPLE INC., 1 INFINITE LOOP, MS 3TM, CUPERTINO, CA 95014 . The trademark is filed in the category of Advertising, Business & Retail Services . Retail store services featuring computers, computer software, computer peripherals, mobile phones, consumer electronics and related accessories, and demonstration of products relating thereto

Mark Description: The mark consists of distinctive design and layout of a retail store.

My question is this: if I build my house to look like an Apple store – I’d sleep on the shelves, probably, and make breakfast at the Genius Bar, would I be sued? Is that fair use of a trademark?

Apple also trademarked the new iDisk icon, which is pretty exciting as well.

  • New Cornell Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Dentistry Will Be First Chair for Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine

Dean Jerold S. Goldberg, DDS and R. William Cornell, Jr., DDS (DEN ’60)
    and his wife, Chloe

Case Western Reserve University alumnus R. William Cornell, Jr., DDS has made a $1.5 million commitment to endow the first named professorship at the Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine. The Dr. and Mrs. R. William Cornell, Jr. Endowed Professor of Pediatric Dentistry will be the first endowed chair in the history of the school, which was established in 1892.

“This endowed chair is an important milestone for the dental school,” said Jerold S. Goldberg, DDS, dean of the School of Dental Medicine. “Not only will it ensure excellence forever in the area of pediatric dentistry, but we also hope that Dr. Cornell’s generosity becomes a model for others.”

Cornell’s contributions to the school and the dental profession were recognized with the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award during the dental school’s annual gala award dinner on Saturday, May 15, at the State Theater in downtown Cleveland. The gala is part of the annual reunion celebration and welcome of dental students into the profession during graduation weekend.

“I wanted to support the school that gave me the knowledge and skills to build a career in a field I love,” said Cornell. “Faculty support was a clear choice for me, as there has always been a very positive relationship between the faculty and the students at the dental school.”

In his early career, Cornell had numerous roles at the dental school: first as a volunteer instructor and later as a salaried clinical instructor, assistant clinical professor and acting co-chair of the pediatric dentistry department. He also directed the undergraduate dental program until 1976, when he left Case Western Reserve to join the faculty at Northwestern University.

In addition to his work with the dental school and running a practice in Fairview Park, Ohio, Cornell served the greater community through the Cleveland school’s dental clinic and the Salvation Army’s free clinic.

Even though he is now retired, Cornell volunteers with the Collier County Health Department Dental Clinic near his retirement home in Naples, Fla., and provides seminars for pediatric dental residents at University of Florida College of Dentistry and Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He also volunteers several times a month for Habitat for Humanity through his church.

“Dr. Cornell is an outstanding educator and practitioner who has been a role model to thousands of dentists,” said Goldberg.
