  • Bowing To China: What It Means To Our Future

“Let China sleep, for when China awakes she will shake the world.” Napoleon Bonaparte.

American greed and extravagance has awakened China, and an eastern shadow is being cast on an indebted and divided America. At stake is our economic future.

It seems hard to believe but in just two generations, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, America has crumpled from world kingpin to global has-been. In fact this month President Obama bowed before Paramount Leader of China, Hu Jintao, at the nuclear security summit.

Little wonder our President defers to the Chinese leader. The Treasury Department’s monthly Treasury International Capital report was just released and it shows China with $877.5 billion in long-term Treasury debt. Even worse, the Obama administration needs the Chinese government to buy part of the estimated $2.4 trillion in Treasury debt that Washington must sell off this year.

The Obama administration is praying that the Communists will waddle-up and buy hundreds of more billions of dollars in Uncle Sam IOUs. So far things are not panning out. In February China trimmed its holdings of United States Treasury debt by 1.3 percent, the fourth consecutive decline.

Unless China antes up the recovery will crash and burn. Without robust foreign demand for U.S. Treasuries, interest rates that Washington pays to keep the country solvent will soar.

Business Week reported last week that U.S.-China relations are strained on several fronts, including Chinese censorship, the value of the Yuan, the Copenhagen climate conference, even Obama’s meeting with the Dalai Lama. The final point underscores just how little leverage America has—the spiritual leader had to be shown out the back door of the White House, sidestepping trash, for fear that the Chinese might be angered.

    Nixon’s Biggest Blunder
Short of sacrificing Taiwan and living in economic servitude, there may be no pleasing China. According to The Daily Caller, “In either public or private, China will not take orders from the U.S. or anyone else. Not only has Obama’s rhetorical magic not worked on China, he has received a public dressing down by Chinese officials. It was simply a reminder of new global realities. Ultimately, no one will tame China.”

It is a far cry from the world we knew 40 years ago. History may yet declare that Richard Nixon’s worst blunder was not Watergate but his awakening of China. When Nixon played his China card in 1972 the U.S. had no diplomatic relations, no embassy; not even an established route of communication with China. But in less than two generations the Soviet Union, America’s then rival, crumbled. Beijing has filled the vacuum. Today it is our largest creditor and it is becoming an unprecedented economic colossus.

This year China’s gross domestic product (GDP) will top $5 trillion, making it the world’s second-largest economy behind only the U.S. In fact, China has eclipsed Japan five years sooner than was forecast. According to The New York Times, China has also surpassed Japan in having the biggest trade surplus and foreign currency reserves, as well as the highest steel production. China has even overtaken Japan as the world’s largest automobile producer.

C.H. Kwan, a senior fellow at the Nomura Institute of Capital Market Research, left China in the late 1970s to capture the magic that was Japan. Today he believes he got it all wrong. Based on current growth and currency trends, Kwan forecasts that the Chinese economy will surpass the United States by 2039. And that date could move up to 2026 if China lets its currency appreciate by a mere 2 percent a year.

“We’re no longer talking about China making lots of shoes,” said Kwan. “China is about to leave everyone behind in a big way.”

In terms of wealth and power China is becoming what America use to be. China’s GDP grew a shade less than 12 percent in the first quarter of this year. Even more impressively, inflation remained low during the quarter, up just over 2 percent. Strip away food prices, which have jumped because of a major drought, and inflation would almost be flat.

What makes China’s accomplishment so remarkable is that 40 years ago the nation was impoverished. An estimated 90 million Chinese died under Chairman Mao’s rule, making him thrice as an effective killer of his people than was Joseph Stalin. China has polished up its image on the world stage with dalliances like hosting the Olympic Games, but Mao’s grand ambitions are very much intact.

According to the April 15, FX Street.com: “China is out for world domination.”

    No Tickey No Money
China’s military may not yet challenge the U.S., but Beijing wields the world’s most powerful weapon—credit. China’s foreign reserves, the world’s largest, rose to a new high of $2.45 trillion at the end of March, up a whopping 25 percent from a year earlier.

It wasn’t until 2006, or 30 years after Mao’s death, that China accumulated its first $1 trillion in foreign reserves. Yet by last April that amount had doubled to $2 trillion and by the end of this year Beijing may hold in its hands $3 trillion in foreign reserves. If Obama gets his way, $1 trillion of that sum will be in liquid Treasury instruments. All that money has a lot of strings.

Last month Premier Wen Jiabao, China’s top economic official, lectured Washington to take "concrete steps" to reassure Treasury investors. Keep in mind the irony: Jiabao, a communist, is demanding that the Obama administration rein in big government spending and preserve the greenback’s integrity. While Obama bows publicly to Beijing, he appears oblivious to their demands on curbing spending. The consequences of this will be horrendous.

Our future boils down to Washington’s insatiable demand for more money. Earlier this month Commodity Online reported that seven U.S. states are in worse financial condition than Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. “Shelter may prove hard to find. With a $3.83 trillion budget, a $12.3 trillion federal government debt, a $1.35 trillion 2010 budget deficit and $63 trillion in unfunded liabilities, the fiscal condition of the U.S. has come into question and foreign interest in U.S. Treasuries has declined.”

    chart

As the graph above shows, rates on 10-year Treasuries are now touching on 4 percent, twice as high as they were 16 months ago. If China continues to withdraw from weekly multi-billion dollar Treasury auctions—or worse yet starts to sell some of its Treasury holdings—interest rates will soar. Given the vastness of America’s borrowing needs I would not be surprised to see Treasury yields double again over the next 12 months. That will damn the recovery and kill the bull market in Big Board Stocks. So far only Obama has been bowing down to China, but unless he gets a grip on federal spending, we will all have to get in the prone position.

Action To Take: Sell any and all bonds other than three-month Treasury bills. Lock in interest rates wherever possible. Don’t buy into the bull market on Wall Street. It is as hollow as a fortune cookie.

Yours for real wealth and good health,

  • Study: Eating Brown Rice May Lower Heart Disease Risk

Study: Eating brown rice may lower heart disease risk Over the last few years nutritionists have identified many health benefits linked to the consumption of brown rice, including its ability to help control cholesterol and blood sugar. According to a new study, routinely eating brown rice may also help protect a person from high blood pressure and atherosclerosis, two important risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Through comprehensive research, lead author Satoru Eguchi and his colleagues from the Cardiovascular Research Center at Temple University discovered that brown rice contains a layer of tissue capable of combating angiotensin II, an endocrine protein partially responsible for the development of high blood pressure and the hardening of the arteries.

The subaleurone layer of brown rice, which is stripped away to make white rice, is also rich in dietary fibers and oligosaccharides.

"Our research suggests that there is a potential ingredient in rice that may be a good starting point for looking into preventive medicine for cardiovascular diseases," said Eguchi. "We hope to present an additional health benefit of consuming half-milled or brown rice [as opposed to white rice] as part of a regular diet."

The researcher also speculated that the study’s findings may help shed light on why fewer people die of heart disease in Japan than the United States.

  • The Storied History Of May 1

“May Day!” “May Day!” The first day in May has been a warning, a celebration and a cause for alarm for more than two centuries.

May 1 has been a time of international socialist solidarity ever since Communists seized power in their first country. Although Karl Marx was sure that his “workers of the world” would unite first in the industrialized west, instead it was a Bolshevik coup in Russia that led to the first Soviet state.

On the other hand, May 1 was a pretty good day for the end of hostilities (or at least open fighting) in the United Kingdom. Because it was on May 1, 1707, that England, Wales, and Scotland formed “the United Kingdom of Great Britain.”

But wait, there’s more. On May 1, 1961, Fidel Castro announced that (surprise!) he’d been a Communist all along. He named himself "president for life," claiming there was no longer any need to hold free elections in Cuba. Unfortunately for the Cuban people, it turned out to be a very long life.

On May 1, 1920, Babe Ruth hit his first home run as a Yankee. And on May 1, 1951, Mickey Mantle hit his first major league home run. There would be many, many more by both men.

  • Hands-on with the Firefox browser for Android phones

    Firefox Fennec browser on Android

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Firefox mobile browser running on Android, but it’s the first time that Mozilla’s been comfortable enough with it to compile the app for us mere mortals to test out.

Why do we care so much about another browser for Android when the stock Webkit browser works pretty darn well? Two words: Mozilla Weave. Being able to sync your history, bookmarks and even open tabs between your desktop and mobile browser is something I’ve been wanting since first hearing about Fennec. And we’re getting closer.

Note that this is still very early in the development stage. While anyone can download and install this build of Fennec, it will crash. It will hang. It’s a little buggy. And it’s very cool that Mozilla lets us play with it this early in its life, so don’t judge it too harshly. A few warnings from Mozilla’s Vladimir Vukićević:

    • We’ve only really tested this on the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One.
    • It will likely not eat your phone, but bugs might cause your phone to stop responding, requiring a reboot.
    • Memory usage of this build isn’t great — in many ways it’s a debug build, and we haven’t really done a lot of optimization yet.  This could cause some problems with large pages, especially on low memory devices like the Droid.
    • You’ll see the app exit and relaunch on first start, as well as on add-on installs; this is a quirk of our install process, and we’re working to get rid of it.
    • You can’t open links from other apps using Fennec; we should have this for the next build.

Anyhoo, you can download Fennec here. (FWIW: Mozilla tested with the Nexus One and Droid — your mileage may vary — and it does NOT work if you’re running Apps2SD.) And be sure to read Vlad’s blog for complete instructions and troubleshooting, including instructions for installing Weave.

And check out our hands-on video after the break.

  • In Defiance Of Federal Reform Bill, Florida Passes Healthcare Freedom Act

In defiance of federal reform bill, Florida passes Healthcare Freedom ActIn an effort to blunt the impact of the sweeping healthcare reform passed by Congress and signed by President Obama late last month, the Florida legislature has passed an act that aims to protect the state’s healthcare system from interference.

Florida’s Healthcare Freedom Act (HJR 37/SJR 72), sponsored by Florida Representative Scott Plakon and Florida Senator Carey Baker, passed the House and Senate and will appear on the November ballot.

The legislation, which was inspired by the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Freedom of Choice in Healthcare Act, blocks a state or federal requirement for individuals to purchase health insurance.

"Protecting the individual freedom for people to make their own healthcare decisions is a priority," said ALEC health task force director Christie Herrera.

She added that "the amount of support from state legislators and policy makers for this legislation has been tremendous."

ALEC’s Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act has now been introduced or proposed in 42 states.

Meanwhile, Mississippi Representatives Alex Monsour and Steven Palazzo received preliminary approval to place their Healthcare Freedom Act on the 2011 or 2012 ballot.

  • Wirelessly configuring and monitoring scales from “a safe distance”

    The wireless approach

Weighing and feeding can be a very elaborate, time-consuming and costly process. Configuration, monitoring and maintenance work are significant factors depending on the raw materials to be processed and the system properties. In some cases, scale controls used in tough environments incur high maintenance and repair costs.

Ten years ago Schenck Process took its first major step towards improving cost/benefit ratios with specially designed mechatronic weighfeeders. These feature mechanics and electronics in a shared sturdy unit which makes them particularly robust, durable, easy to maintain and highly interoperable as various interfaces allow them to be linked to virtually any automation system.

When coupled with the innovative EasyServe service program, the result is an unbeatable system that can now also be configured wirelessly from a distance.

EasyServe. The name says it all
The EasyServe service program can be used to conveniently install, configure and monitor the weighfeeders using a laptop. And thanks to new Bluetooth wireless modules, this process went wireless two years ago.

A process requiring no cables offers much more than simply high convenience. When weighfeeders are difficult to access, Bluetooth provides impressive selling points as these are now free for wireless communication and the full range of opportunities that offers.

The operator can also work at a clean and really comfortable workplace at a safe distance from all the action, which conserves the operating unit and is better for maintenance staff at the service site. Other selling points include the fact that cumbersome cables are no longer needed and can be consigned to history.

But let’s stick to the present where wireless methods can be used over considerable distances, saving both time and money. Depending on the variant used, weighfeeders can be wirelessly configured from distances of 30 or 100 metres.

Existing scales and feeders, fitted with DISOCONT®, INTECONT® PLUS or DISOMAT®, can also be equipped for modern networks. Both Ethernet and WLAN can be used for communication and data processing with the customer’s network.

    Great communication services included
The breadth of services offered by the new wireless module is also impressive. Its main job is optimum configuration via EasyServe for commissioning and ongoing service work, including parameterisation, monitoring and maintenance. Settings for trends such as feed rate and weight in the weighfeeders’ time line can also be easily recorded and graphically depicted within the service program.

    Perfectly equipped for every scenario
EasyServe can be used for DISOCONT®, INTECONT® PLUS, INTECONT® Satus and INTECONT® Opus.

DISOPLAN is the service tool for DISOMAT® Tersus, DISOMAT® Satus, DISOMAT® Opus and DISOBOX®.
When using several DISOCONT® feeding electronics in one system, Bluetooth wireless technology can take the place of the service bus.

Depending on specific requirements, Schenck Process offers two different module range classes: Bluetooth class 1 for up to 100 metres and Bluetooth class 2 for up to 30 metres. A two metre connection cable allows the transmission path to be aligned perfectly.

As they are simply attached using two external clips, it’s just as easy to affix the two modules as it is to operate them. Smooth data operation is indicated on the integrated LEDs and both modules offer IP65 protection.

Want to know more? No problem. Just give us a ring and speak in person to one of our specialists working on innovative scale solutions with EasyServe, the new wireless service program.

  • Robust RDP transducers monitor sluice gate position

Sluices installed on rivers rely on a gate operating system of cylinders, valves and pumps that calls for components to provide reliability in wet environments. Transducers to monitor position are typically fitted to hydraulic cylinders used to actuate the sluice gate and therefore need to be suitable for submersed operation.

Linear Variable Differential Transducers (LVDTs) sealed to IP67 and signal cabling are additionally protected against mechanical damage, resulting in a robust device capable of accurate, reliable measurement of displacement that enjoys a long service life. The choice of 4~20mA signal output permits the use of long cable runs to a dry location for the associated signal processing and data logging equipment. An alternative approach is to use transducers operating using magnetostrictive principles.

Further information and guidance on LVDTs and magnetostrictive transducers suitable for monitoring sluice position can be obtained from the RDP engineering support team on 01902 457512, or online at http://www.rdpe.com/uk/men-disp.htm.’.

  • Seitron Presents its New Combustion Analyzer — Chemist 400

Seitron, a company that manufactures and sells electronic equipment for regulation, measurement and control, has expanded its range of Chemist portable combustion analyzers. The new 4-cell Chemist 400 will be on the market starting next spring, delivered with a certificate of calibration and with a second certificate made available one year after purchase, in accordance with standard UNI 10389-1.
Like the three existing models, the new version is designed to assist in fine-tuning boiler performance and carrying out maintenance: determining the efficiency of condensing boilers (UNI 10389-1), testing the tightness of gas pipes on new (UNI 7129) and existing (UNI 11127) installations, measuring carbon monoxide (CO) and measuring the stack draught on open-flue boilers. In addition to these functions, Chemist 400 can also be used to detect and measure two gases produced by combustion: sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
SO2 and NO2 can cause heavy air pollution, as well as acting as irritants to the human metabolism. Highly sensitive to environmental issues, Seitron directs the efforts and expertise of its Research and Development Division to creating appliances that can help solve the problems connected with the application of industrial equipment. Furthermore, the company is keen on ensuring customer satisfaction, providing timely and efficient support on every aspect of its products. Examples of this approach are: test tickets printed on plain paper using permanent ink ribbons, up to 4 years extended warranties on instruments and cells, competitive prices applied on all replacement parts, full-service maintenance contracts and after-sales service on all models, so that customers who have purchased Chemist analyzers since 2004 can get the latest software free of charge.
Careful design, product safety and ease of use are the main reasons why Seitron customer loyalty rates are close to 100%, which contributes to consolidate its position in the field of portable combustion analyzers in Italy and abroad.

  • The new E-Series

Since its foundation in 1984, ALMATEC Maschinenbau GmbH has kept on defining the current state of the art of air operated diaphragm pumps via decent product characteristics.
At the Achema 2009 ALMATEC has introduced the new E-Series as succeeding series to the A-Series.

The development of the E-Series is based on the extensive experiences with the proven pumps models and offers a large variety of new, market-relevant advantages:

further increases pump security due to innovative ring-tightening structure
    increase capacity
    decreased air consumption
    reduced noise level
    optimised flow pattern
pulsation damper suitable for flange connection
As common, the housing parts are tightened to each other via housing bolts. However, instead of single bolts pressing punctually against the housing, all housing bolts are now tightened against a diaphragm-sized ring per side. This structure results in more evenly spreading the housing bolt force and in an increased permissible bolt torque – in the end an increased pump safety which is assisted by further improvements of construction details. The flow resistance is reduced via an optimized flow pattern to increase the efficiency factor of the pump. Compared to the A-Series, the same air flow achieves a higher fluid flow, respectively less air flow is required fro the same fluid flow. The pulsation damper can still be used an integrated model on top of the pump. However, an additional version with flange connection is available now.

  • MICRO BLDC Servo Drive

There is a new drive available in the Micro product range, suitable for both brushless motors from the BL 24V range and DC permanent magnet motors from the EC 24V range.
This drive is extremely versatile and can be used in all applications where a dynamic reaction is required making it ideal for industrial applications.
Other than being able to control DC motors and DC brushless motors, it can drive with open loop, encoder or Hall sensors feedback or with tachometer feedback close loop. All requirements in the automation industry can be fulfilled with this drive.
Model 65 can be used with the following motors :
    – Size 2 rated current/peak 2/4 amp for brushless motor BL005 and DC motors EC020
    – Size 7 rated current/ peak 7/14 amp for brushless motors BL012-018, BL032-043 and DC motors EC035,EC050 and EC070
    – Size 10 rated current/peak 10/20 amp for DC motors EC100, EC180
DC motors from the EC range, together with the encoder SE22 or brushless motors from the BL range can be used for automatic doors, using a high performance 4Q drive.

  • Official Fennec Pre-Alpha Foxes Its Way to the Public

While we’ve reported Mozilla’s Fennec browser being leaked and compiled in the past, the company has just released a “pre-alpha” version of the browser to the public. Those who wish to grab the .apk and start browsing can do so by visiting this text link from your phone. The release comes via the blog of Vladimir Vukicevic, an “Infrastructuralist” at Mozilla whose blog has a fair amount of posts about Firefox’ little cousin.

Support includes installing extensions, which I find very cool. Warnings abound: it’s extremely buggy at the moment, but right now I’d take something from the developer over some fan-compiled projects.

This build should be considered “pre-alpha”, so there are some warnings and caveats:

    • This build requires Android 2.0 or above, and likely an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable device

  • Qliance Nails $6M From Bezos, Dell, Drew Carey for Primary Care That Avoids Insurance

    qli
    Luke Timmerman wrote:

Qliance Medical Management isn’t the richest startup in Seattle, but it may have the most star power behind it. The company, which deals directly with patients and doesn’t accept health insurance for primary care medical services, has nailed down another $6 million in venture capital from a group led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and which included Dell Computer pioneer Michael Dell and actor Drew Carey.

Besides those three famous names, Qliance attracted more cash from its existing investors Second Avenue Partners, New Atlantic Ventures, and Clear Fir Partners. The company got started in 2006 with a $3.5 million venture round, followed by another $4 million last July, bringing the company’s total to $13.5 million since inception. Rich Barton, the founder of Expedia and co-founder of Zillow, is another one of the big names that have put money to work at Qliance.

The big idea at the company, which we first profiled in December 2008, is a simple and disruptive one to the current U.S. healthcare system. Qliance runs what it calls a “direct practice” in downtown Seattle, which doesn’t accept any health insurance and deals directly with patients. The patient hands over a credit card, and agrees to pay a $44 to $84 monthly membership fee to Qliance for unrestricted access to its primary care medical services. The model allows Qliance to avoid spending its time doing things to get insurers to pay for primary care, which frees up the doctors to spend more time with individual patients.

Routine primary care—things like women’s health exams, flu shots, X-rays—make up almost 90 percent of the medical issues that prompt people to see a doctor, Qliance says. Going through an insurer to get these routine things done is sort of like asking your car insurance provider to reimburse you for an oil change; insurance is really needed when you’ve been in a serious accident, Qliance CEO Norm Wu said last month at an Xconomy event. Once people use “direct primary care” that avoids insurance, Qliance says consumers can get a catastrophic health insurance policy to cover them in case of a serious accident, or a cancer diagnosis, that is beyond the scope of what a primary care doc can treat.

By combining the monthly fee of primary care with the secondary insurance, Qliance contends employers and patients can save as much as 50 percent on their overall health spending, and improve overall health by making it easier for people to see a primary care doc who can help them focus on prevention and wellness.

“It’s not often you come across a business model that is truly transformational and disruptive in a sector ripe for reform, but that’s how we view Qliance in health care,” said Melinda Lewison of Bezos Expeditions, in a company statement. “We see significant long-term opportunity in Qliance as it’s easily scalable to other communities and health care reform has added wind to its back with the ability to compete in the insurance exchanges.”

The Amazon connection is a pretty clear one. Nick Hanauer of Second Avenue Partners, an early and enthusiastic backer of Qliance, was one of the early investors in Amazon.

Encouraging as the financing is, Qliance has had to clear a number of legal hurdles …Next Page »

  • Missing in the Line of Duty: Parks Finks Out

I know beloved Chief Daryl Gates was buried Tuesday but the funeral was over at 11 a.m. and the Council convened half an hour later and just before 1 p.m. voted to allow the con job DWP rate increase to become permanent on a 9-5 vote.

Sellouts Alarcon, Cardenas, Hahn, Wesson and Garcetti as expected provided the five votes to reject taking jurisdiction of the sleight of hand they pulled off to turn a one-quarter increase of nearly 5 percent in power rates into a permanent rate increase.

The mayor’s boys don’t feel no need to listen to the public because they think they are so secure but Cardenas and Wesson will be facing organized challenges for re-election next March from the Clean Sweep Campaign (lacleansweep.com) and Hahn suffers delusions of grandeur that ignoring the public  in exchange for union money will carry her into the office of lieutenant governor — a heartbeat away from becoming governor of the formerly great State of California.

The criticial 10th vote was missing in action, Bernard Parks, the former police chief who had every reason to pay full respect to Gates’ controversial service to the city.

Yet, less than half an hour after he chose not to support his ally Jan Perry and fulfill his commitments, Parks appeared at the City Council Chamber to run the first Budget and Finance Committee hearing on the mayor’s new fictitious budget plan.

Parks was assuming his favored role as the public’s guardian on the city’s finances — a role he has done so well we are faced with seeing our libraries and parks closing, our building code enforcement and community planning abolished, our Neighborhood Council system decimated and our DWP rates rising in what is just the first step in a massive escalation.

Parks — the half-million dollar a year man with his pension and salary and lucrative perks and benefits — was a no-show when it counted.

He must be preoccupied with his war against senior lead officers and the three-day work week for cops and thus forgot that he could have pressured the DWP to deliver the $73.5 million it promised to the general fund and given ratepayers a fair shot and forcing the utility to come clean about all the hundreds of plans and costs it has done such a good job of hiding for so long.

It would be charitable to let him off the hook as nothing but a lapse in memory. But that isn’t the truth. It was a rigged vote and Parks made it happen intentionally.

The Council has a long tradition of fixing the vote on controversial issues so that they appear to be close and gee whiz the public lost again.

That’s what happened a week ago when Zine and Krekorian rolled over and let them get away with making the DWP rate hike permanent without anyone except maybe the Machiavellian Garcetti really knowing what they were doing.

So with five “no” votes secure and Parks taking a dive, everyone else on the Council was free to pander to the anger and resentment of their constituents without disrupting the flow of money to a secretive and demonstrably incompetent agency that represents the city’s most valuable asset.

For all his talk about fiscal responsibility, for all his knowledge of penny-ante fine points of the city budget, Parks has allowed the city to paper over its overspending, make promises to workers and the public it cannot keep and pushed the city to brink of bankruptcy as much as anybody.

For a cop, always being there when duty calls is what makes them better than the rest of us. The greatest failing of Gates was that he was off partying when the Rodney King riots erupted and got out of hand.

For Parks, it was that he wasn’t there when we needed the Council to stand up to the DWP on behalf of the four million people of this city. He can posture and nitpick all he wants from now on, but he was the missing man when it counted.
