  • Feito para as pistas: Porsche 911 GT3 R

    marcas

  • Birmingham’s obsession with squares… Why?!

    Right that’s it I’ve had enough….

After seeing the new MSCP for Eastside, the CUBE at the Mailbox, buildings with squared or rectangular tiles, so many straight edged buildings that adourn the sky line. Why is Birmingham’s modern architecture so unbelievably dull?

Apart from Rotunda, Beetham, Sellfridges and the upcoming New Street, there are no buildings that give a positive dramatic impact, not only across the skyline but also at ground level. No wow factor. I’ve been to Manchester and Liverpool and they’re really pushing hard on this whereas Birmingham seems to be too shy to break with the sensible convention (or too scarerd) and more willing to let the opportuinty for making an *efficient* fast buck determine what style should be built.

If the height of the climax of architecture in Birmingham is a square box, then heaven help us. People may take the piss out of the Bilbao effect but it does provide everyone with the eye candy that makes coming into a town centre and the immediate surrounding areas much more bearable. Nothing about the buildings that have been proposed, built or renovated quite recently have been able to set any pulses racing and apart from the said buildings I have mentioned above eveything else has been devoid of any ‘personality’.

The Cube. I um-and-ah about whether I like this or not but waking up to reality, it’s just a squared up box. The cladding makes it vaguely exciting I guess but all I can think of is… Pontiac (I’ll explain this in another post possibly). A lot of buildings in this town seem to come from the folded paper school of design and are only produced by commitee (squares/rectangles) or some nutcase(s) on a mission (triangular) to come up with some crazy plans just to inject something interesting in a design just for the sake of it ending up with something totally distasteful… Eg Eastside BCU.

    So I start the debate.

-Birmingham’s modern architecture is too dull and uninteresting.
-The designers/planners are either to shy or scared, or too manic without thought.
-We need more interesting and thought out design that actually inspire.

    /discuss….

  • Al Sharpton on Pat Robertson: ‘Un-Christian’

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who visited Chicago today to ask churches to contribute to Haitian relief funds, took umbrage at comments by an evangelical broadcaster that the people of Haiti might have brought upon themselves the earthquake that left tens of thousands dead.

Christian televangelist Pat Robertson said last week on his TV show that slaves in Haiti “swore a pact to the devil” to obtain their freedom from French colonial authorities in the late 1700s. Robertson said the Haitians told Satan, “We will serve you,” and that “ever since (the pact), they have been cursed.”

Sharpton, at Christ Universal Temple in the South Side on Sunday, said the statements were “repulsive” and “un-Christian.”

“To bring this kind of negative and wicked spirit into a scene where we are watching children’s dead bodies stacked up is abominable to me,” said Sharpton, who also criticized radio commentator Rush Limbaugh’s musings that the tragedy would play into President Barack Obama’s political plans.

“This kind of foolishness, while people are laying in the rubble in Haiti fighting for their lives, shows a contempt some people have for the human condition.”

But Sharpton had no calls for apologies.

“I wouldn’t call on Pat Robertson to do anything. I think that the best way to deal with a glass that appears muddy is to put a clean glass next to it,” he said. “I hope the clean glass of those fair and humane-thinking religious leaders can be compared” to them.

Carlton Pearson, minister at Christ Universal Temple, told the congregation Sunday he hoped they could donate $25,000 in one day for Red Cross for Haitian relief efforts.

  • Quinn signs Illinois cemetery law

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed the state’s Cemetery Oversight Act into law today.

The governor’s office says the new law creates a regulatory structure for the Illinois funeral and cemetery industries and provides oversight and regulation over cemeteries in the state.

The new law comes after former workers last year allegedly dug up graves in a scheme to resell burial plots at Burr Oak Cemetery in south suburban Alsip.

Quinn’s office says the new law includes reforms and recommendations from the state’s Cemetery Oversight Task Force.

The governor says with the new law, “bereaved families will have a place to turn if they are not satisfied with the services provided by cemeteries, funeral directors and embalmers.”

Well it looks like not everything is going as smooth as one would think.Sure the upgrade is absolutely free and it only requires you to sign a new contract but not everyone will fall for that trick. In fact some people will still want the Dream over the Magic. But the Dream is not available in Rogers stores anymore. It looks like Rogers has taken the Dreams off its shelves for now

  • Apple’s Batmobile [Image Cache]

With all the Apple tablet talk these days, it’d be OK to lose sight of the fact that the company’s been there before (sort of) with the Newton. Seen here is a rare “Batmobile” prototype of that defunct PDA.

From Flickr user and Batmobile owner splorp, we learn that the Batmobile was a pre-release model of the Apple MessagePad (related to the Newton platform). Sadly, this particular unit does not work, and may have never worked, having been a “technical sample only.” [Flickr]
