  • DIY: The Ikea camera dolly

ivar-dollyHere’s one of the easier projects I’ve seen on Make in a while. Take an Ikea “Ivar” ladder, lay it on the floor, and use it as a camera dolly. Just the thing for shooting video, I could have used one of these while we were in Vegas. The best part about this project? It’s cheap. You’re looking at roughly $30 worth of parts to build this.

It’s pretty simple; take an Ivar shelving side unit, a piece of plywood, some rollerblade wheels, assorted nuts and bolts, some skateboard grip tape, and you are rolling (no pun intended). Assembly is pretty self explanatory from the pictures, and the end result is a smooth rolling camera dolly that’s light, easy to transport, and cheap. Check out some sample video from the builder, and then go build one yourself.

  • Santa Anita Park Race 7 Horse Racing Betting Pick Friday 1-15-09

With our free pick from horse racing we are going to select from Race 7 at Santa Anita on Friday’s card. Post time is scheduled for 7:07PM Eastern Time and you can watch it on TVG. With our free pick we will play on #11 Snowmaster to win.

Riding Snowmaster will be jockey Rafael Bejarano and is trained by Graham Motion. The 7th at Santa Anita today is scheduled for 1 1/16th of a mile on the synthetic main surface for four year olds and upward. This is a conditioned optional claming race. This four-year-old colt has been in the money in all 6 of his lifetime races. There is a huge move here to a high percentage jock in Bejarano. He is making a turf to main track move in this race after two pretty good efforts against Allowance company. I like the fact Snowmaster’s Brisnet numbers have improved in each of his past 3 races. This consistent hard trying colt is the choice in this conditioned optional claiming race.

Play #11 Snowmaster to win race 7 at Santa Anita 4-1 on the Morning Line.

Post Time at 7:07PM Eastern Time televised by TVG

CotaiJet increases routes to Hong Kong
    15/01/2010 00:58:00

CotaiJet ferry operation has been issued a 10-year license to operate its ferries between Macau and Hong Kong under the new licensing regime approved by the Government, the company announced yesterday.
It also announced an increase in the number of routes, including the addition of several daily roundtrip sailings between the Hong Kong International Airport and the Taipa Ferry Terminal.
“Opening new routes and increasing capacity from Hong Kong to Macau will facilitate the growth of the meetings, incentive, convention, and exhibition business by seamlessly linking the Hong Kong airport and other points of arrival and departure to the Cotai Strip,” said chief executive officer of Sands China Ltd, Steve Jacobs in a statement.
The CotaiJet ferry service has run daily roundtrip sailings between the Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong and the Taipa Ferry Terminal in Macau since it began operating in late 2007. Under the new license, CotaiJet can operate up to 35-daily roundtrip sailings between the Hong Kong Ferry Terminal and the Taipa Ferry Terminal; six roundtrip sailings between the Hong Kong International Airport and the Taipa Ferry Terminal; six roundtrips between the Hong Kong International Airport and the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal on the Macau peninsula; three roundtrip sailings each between the China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon, Hong Kong and the Taipa and Outer Harbor terminals; and two daily roundtrip sailings between the Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong and the Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal.
Steve Jacobs said the company would work as quickly as possible to have the new routes up and running and he thanked the members of the Macau Port Authority and the entire Macau Government for their hard work and dedication throughout the process.

  • Why the Kankakee County Farm Bureau hates net neutrality

The Kankakee County Farm Bureau wants to stop net neutrality. So does the Erie Neighborhood House, along with Downtown Springfield Inc, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, and the mayor of North Chicago.

The organizations all share several things: they are located in Chicago, they want the FCC to focus on broadband adoption rather than net neutrality, and… they all have connections to AT&T.

  • Google begs forgiveness, lowers Nexus One upgrade price by $100

    nexusonepricematch1
We can all agree it’s a nice phone, but customer service problems and reception issues have made the Nexus One’s launch a little rocky. It seems that people don’t feel they’re getting their $379 worth, and Google, apparently sympathizes. They’ve lowered the upgrade price (non-unlocked, non-new-contract) by a hundred bucks and will be sending out $100 rebate forms to those among you who paid the first amount. This is basically Google giving the rest of us puppy dog eyes, and we all know you can’t stay mad at Google for… aw! So cute!

  • Strolling Through Winter Gardens

Visiting big exhibits and botanical gardens is obviously a very different experience than visiting the same garden in spring or summer when most plants are growing or in full swing. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a wonderful time visiting gardens in the winter, and maybe learn a thing or two about winter garden habitats.

    public winter garden

    • Winter gardens are quieter which is a big perk – no crowds! They may even offer discounted entrance rates (if they charge).
    • Winter gardens sometimes offer special winter exhibits to make up for the lack of fully blooming plants such as art shows, new sculptures unveiled, and more.
    • Winter gardens are very peaceful.Plants, trees, and streams take on a different, more calming feel and look during the winter.
    • Winter gardens are still thriving. While it’s true that you won’t always see as many plants as you may in the summer, it doesn’t mean you won’t experience a garden. You’ll see some of the plants that make it through the winter, see how a professional garden is cared for during the winter and likely see some little woodland creatures and birds.

Right now The New York Times has an excellent piece up about winter gardens – In Winter Gardens, a Marriage of Botany and Stark Beauty that delves into a few public gardens you can visit during the winter. It’s well worth a read. If you don’t live near any of the gardens mentioned in the piece take a look at the APGA Public Garden Search and find one near you. Not only are public gardens fun and educational but they’re a great way to get the kiddos and you outside and active during the winter.

  • NY Times Finds An 8-Year-Old On TSA Flight Watch List

Back in 2007, the TSA wrote a “mythbuster” blog post on its site claiming that no 8-year-olds were on the TSA “no fly” list, which apparently was a challenge to the NY Times. While it didn’t actually find an 8-year-old on the “no fly” list, it did find one on the “watch list.” To be fair, the TSA in its blog post does acknowledge that there could be some 8-year-olds on the watch list, but none on the no fly list. And the Times did not find one on the no fly list — so the TSA’s blog post is technically accurate.

That said, the TSA blog post also claims that if there are mistakes that lead to an 8-year-old being on the watch list, airlines can “automatically deselect” them. And… that did not appear to happen. The kid that the NYT found apparently gets vigorously searched every time he flies. The Times did get the TSA to say on record that “there are no children on the no-fly or selectee lists,” but the fact that little Mikey Hicks gets searched so much highlights the problem. Right now, it seems like everything is based on a name alone. That’s not particularly sophisticated. By this point, shouldn’t the TSA have better tools than just a name to determine if someone is worth additional scrutiny?

  • Seesmic gives key upgrades to Blackberry application users

seesmic-logoPopular social networking dashboard Seesmic has been busy lately. With the recent purchase of Ping.fm extending its updating capabilities, Seesmic today announced several key Twitter upgrades to its Blackberry application.

Recently making upgrades to its mobile Android version, Seesmic is now adding Blackberry features to make Twitter users’ experience easier, according to its blog.  Features include lists, retweets, searches, picture preview, geo-location through Google Maps, a connection with BlackBerry’s BIS-B Internet work, and the ability to delete tweets.

While most of these features can be found across most Twitter applications, several have the potential to make Seesmic on Blackberry a popular app. Aside from the practical retweet function, users will now be able choose a quote feature which includes the quoted user automatically at the end of the tweet. A picture preview feature allows the user to preview any pictures from image services both in the timeline and actual tweets. Leveraging Google Maps and Twitter’s geo-location feature, tweets will have customized maps to reflect the Tweeters location. Lastly, users using any connection, even the BIS-B connection, will be able to use the app.

Seesmic is quickly becoming a go to desktop and mobile all in one social network dashboard. It will be interesting to see what the rest of 2010 holds for the company.
