  • 2010 Detroit: Mini Beachcomber Concept shows Mini’s outdoor side

    2010 Detroit: Mini Beachcomber Concept

    • Key Competitors: Jeep Wrangler and…well, that’s about it.
    • Production: Nothing planned.

As we mentioned last month, the Mini Beachcomber Concept is just another concept version of the Mini Countryman Crossover for those with an active lifestyle and for those who like to enjoy the outdoors. Mini has yet to confirm when the Countryman Crossover will debut or whether it will even be called “Countryman.”

All we know is it seems like Mini is trying to capture some compact crossover segment and is also looking to step on the Jeep Wrangler’s toes.

  • State Funds Energy Research by Northeast Ohio Businesses and
    Case Western Reserve

With State of Ohio funding, researchers at Case Western Reserve University will help businesses in Northeast Ohio build and bring to market better lithium ion batteries and solid oxide fuel cell systems.

In late December, Governor Ted Strickland and other officials approved a total of $19.2 million in Ohio Third Frontier grants for 19 projects.

Case Western Reserve scientists, who are members of the Great Lakes Energy Institute based at the university, are involved in two projects.

Daniel A. Scherson, the Charles F. Mabery Professor of Research in chemistry at Case Western Reserve, will work with Novolyte Technologies, Inc., located in Independence, to develop new electrolytes that reduce or eliminate the flammability of lithium-ion batteries and improve the power output, enabling larger batteries that can be used in motor vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries, which are powerful and light compared to traditional batteries, are currently used in cell phones and laptop computers.

The project was granted $1.12 million from the state. Scherson, whose lab will receive about half the funding, and Martin Payne, Novolyte’s global technology manager, are developing tools to rapidly evaluate which combinations of chemicals perform best and safest, test the mixes and get the new technologies to battery-makers.

Professors Arthur Heuer and Mark DeGuire in the Case School of Engineering are working with Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems, located in North Canton, to determine the long-term reliability of a 1 MW solid oxide fuel cell system connected to the grid for distributed power generation applications. The project was awarded $999,770.

Heuer, DeGuire, and Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems’ engineers will analyze the structural, mechanical, and electrochemical characteristics of the complex ceramic system, as well as the manufacturing process for the system. Their work will advance the robustness of solid oxide fuel cells. The researchers will develop a model to predict system reliability, enabling Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems to move the system to market.

  • The ‘False’ Pandemic: Drug Firms Cashed in on Scare Over Swine Flu, Claims Euro Health Chief

    ‘The swine flu outbreak
was a ‘false pandemic’ driven by drug companies that stood to make
billions of pounds from a worldwide scare, a leading health expert has
    claimed.

    Wolfgang Wodarg, head of
health at the Council of Europe, accused the makers of flu drugs and
vaccines of influencing the World Health Organisation’s decision to
    declare a pandemic.

    This led to the
pharmaceutical firms ensuring ‘enormous gains’, while countries,
including the UK, ’squandered’ their meagre health budgets, with
millions being vaccinated against a relatively mild disease.

  • The Mushroom Effect

‘One could be forgiven for thinking that
the neoconservatives who nudge us towards war with Iran are under the
effect of the magic mushroom. Obsessed with Iran, their trips take on

  • El Toyota FT-CH en Detroit

    ft-ch_detroit.jpg

  • Morgan Stanley: America Will Crush Europe And Japan In Race For Recovery

    morgan stanley

Global economic growth this year will be lead by emerging markets and a stronger than expected US recovery, Morgan Stanley predicts in its recently issued “Five Themes 2010” memorandum.

Skip ahead to the details of Morgan Stanley’s predictions.

The recovery will largely be a “tale of two worlds,” the bank’s economists say. Growth in emerging markets will be more balanced and significantly outperform the recovery in the G10 countries.

In the developed economies, the recovery will be starved for credit and largely jobless. The US, however, will fare better than Europe and Japan, which will double-dip into a recession. Morgan Stanley is now projecting 5% US economic growth for the fourth quarter 2010, a big increase over its previous projection of 4.1%. it expects the US economy to grow at an average rate of 2.8% for the year.

The differences in economic performance will impact interest rates and exchange rates. In general, however, central bankers will “crawl rather than rush” toward the exits of quantitative easing.

The good news is that sovereign debt defaults will be less likely. Instead, governments will face a crisis of public confidence that they can handle their huge debt burdens without creating inflation.

Let’s go through the predictions for the year ahead >

  • U-Haul Selects Cision’s PR Workflow Software to Monitor News Coverage

Cision, the leading provider of media research, distribution, monitoring and analysis services to the public relations industry and other communicators, today announced that U-Haul International, Inc., has selected the award-winning CisionPoint integrated PR workflow solution as its communication management platform.

U-Haul – the world’s preeminent renter of trucks, trailers, self-storage rooms and other equipment to do-it-yourself movers – has a network of more than 15,800 locations in all 50 American states and ten Canadian provinces.

It’s also the largest installer of permanent trailer hitches in the automotive aftermarket industry, one of the top propane retailers in the U.S., and a supplier of alternative fuel for vehicles and backyard barbecues.

With a footprint as large as that, U-Haul receives up to 200 stories or mentions a day in print and online media. Its Phoenix-based staff is responsible for proactive media relations, responding to inbound inquiries, supervising the company’s philanthropy program, and the promotion of its SuperGraphics program.

But monitoring news coverage of U-Haul is perhaps its most critical function.

“We’re a relatively small department, with three people on staff,” said Joanne Fried, director of U-Haul media and public relations.

“Monitoring is extremely important for us, more so perhaps than for other companies. We monitor coverage in the classic PR sense, to understand what’s being said about us, but we also rely on it to respond to incidents involving our equipment.”

U-Haul began using CisionPoint in 2009, after switching their monitoring service from another provider.

The company began by using CisionPoint’s Online and Print Monitoring services, which monitor hundreds of thousands of print publications and online outlets. It plans to extend its use of CisionPoint in the coming weeks.

“We’re very happy with CisionPoint,” Ms. Fried said.

“Its drill-down capability, which lets you read an entire article by clicking a mouse, is very user friendly. We’re looking forward to taking advantage of its reporting capabilities down the road.”

    About CisionPoint

Launched in the United States in October 2007, CisionPoint rapidly became the fastest growing on-demand PR workflow dashboard application, with more than 5,000 customers signed in its first 24 months of sales.
