  • Razer reinvents the 360 Controller with the Onza

RZR_XboxControllerView5_WhtBrgThe boys at Razer are at it again, with the new Onza controller for the 360. They’ve manage to significantly improve on the standard 360 controller by improving the control buttons, adding a tension control, and making it easy to pwn your buddies with a programmable multi-function button.

This is something I’m definitely going to have to review. Razer generally doesn’t create a product unless they are improving on the design, and this is a perfect example of this philosophy. First, they changed up the buttons, and replaced them with their own high quality and tactile style. Then they added a programmable multi-function button on the back, that can be mapped to any of the action buttons, allowing you to set it up as an auto-fire using a selector on the bottom of the controller. The most exciting feature (at least to me, I love to snipe in Halo 3) is the inclusion of a tension control for the analog stick. You can adjust it to make it as tight or slack as you like, just by making a minor adjustment. No word on MSRP or exactly when it’ll be available, but we do know that it will be available worldwide. I’m also going to be reviewing one as soon as it is available.

  • Razer and Sixense combine to form an actually compelling motion controller for PCs

Razer and Sixense’s new motion controller is freakin awesome from CrunchGear on Vimeo.

The motion controller revolution is well underway. It was kicked off by the EyeToy and Wii, and will continue with Project Natal and the Sony wand. But to be honest, I haven’t seen a technology I would trust to swing a sword with until today. Razer is working with a company called Sixense to create a motion controller that works on a principle of magnetic interference instead of accelerometers or cameras, creating a true 1:1 relation between what you do in real life and what appears on the screen. It sounded like a “me too” move to me until I saw them show it off.

Check out the video. I got a more extensive demo from another guy and commentary by Razer’s founder Robert Krakoff. It’s still a brand new technology, and Razer hasn’t set their hand to it yet, instead making sure they can make it a useful device. And I think they will. The 1:1 representation really is very, very accurate, and unlike all the other motion controllers on or off the market, it doesn’t rely at all on line of sight.

The technology uses a magnetic field generated at a certain… frequency, for lack of a better term, which detects the controllers in such a way as their absolute position and orientation can be determined instantaneously. In practice, at least at the moment, there is a lag of about 40 milliseconds and the precision is about 1 mm for position and 1 degree for orientation. That really depends on the RF technology, which Razer spent a lot of time perfecting for the Mamba but has yet to implement in the motion controller. So we’ll see that get a bit better, and of course the controllers themselves will have the usual Razer style.

I’m really, really looking forward to checking these out in a non-trade-show environment. The fact that they’re partnering with Valve means I’ll be able to play some of my favorite games early on, and I think once others see how it’s implemented (seems pretty straightforward, from what Robert told me), we’ll get more mods as well.

  • Burglars going after LA Apple Store customers

I better be careful next time I walk out of my Apple Store here in Santa Monica — apparently burglars are targeting Apple Store customers here in the Los Angeles area. Over 100 customers have apparently been targeted after leaving the store and keeping a computer or other purchase in their car. The thieves wait for customers to walk away from Apple Store bags in their car, either at home or at another store, and then they break in and take them. For some reason, no computers have yet been returned, either, which makes cops think that they’re possibly being “shipped out of the country or fenced right away.” But of course that would require an organized ring, and police aren’t even sure these are all related yet.

How to prevent this from happening to you? Don’t leave an expensive computer unattended in your car (duh), or just make the Apple Store the last stop on your list. I’ve made a few pricey purchases while driving around out here (most recently, I picked up a PS3), and no matter what the neighborhood, I didn’t feel safe about leaving it unattended. Even when I’m just carrying my iPod around, I always lock it out of sight in the glovebox before parking the car. As with all of these types of situations, a little bit of care goes a long way.

  • REPORT: ‘Tea Party’ demonstrators to picket at Detroit Auto Show

On Monday, the Tea Party is coming to Detroit and crumpets are not on the docket (*rimshot*). The traveling band of disgruntled Americans is heading over to General Motors’ Renaissance Center between 9:30 AM and noon to protest against the fed’s stake in GM and Chrysler. The protest is well-timed, with 6,000 journalists and government dignitaries a few hundred yards away at the first media day of the Detroit Auto Show.

The Detroit News reports that Tea Party organizers say the goal of the rally is to “make a peaceful yet clear statement against government takeover of America.” An online flier reportedly distributed by the anti-tax party states, “What Michigan needs is a responsible auto industry that can become profitable, self sustainable and efficient in ways that provide more private jobs and economic success.”

While the Tea Party undoubtedly picked a great day to protest against the federal government’s 61 percent stake in GM, we’re a little confused as to why organizers chose the Ren Cen instead of Cobo Hall. With all the journalists inside, attending press conferences and avoiding Michigan weather, the protesters won’t have the opportunity to get the media attention they’re after. Too bad. It could have made for some interesting people watching.

  • David Rosenberg: Forget The Unemployment Rate, The Real Nightmare Is The EMPLOYMENT Rate

David Rosenberg has A LOT to say about this morning’s miserable jobs report. Actually, in his latest note he unloads a whole bunch of charts to show that the unemployment rate is even worse than you think it is.

Here they are in all their glory. The most striking one, we think, is the last one, that shows that the employment rate is just 58.2% . For every 100 people, 41.8 aren’t working, a brand new low.

Quick, where’s Malcolm Gladwell to explain the dependency!

  • Qualcomm’s Dual-Core 1.5GHz Snapdragon: Smartphones Are About to Go Hyperspeed [Guts]

Qualcomm’s current 1GHz Snapdragon is the muscle that makes the Nexus One so fantastically speedy, but Qualcomm isn’t sitting on their laurels—they just announced two new chips that are going to power the next great mobile devices.

First up is the single-core Snapdragon 8X50A, a 45nm chip that’s essentially the next version of the 1GHz chip in the Nexus One. It’s clocked at 1.3GHz. But what we’re really excited about is the dual-core 8X72, which uses two Scorpion cores to achieve 1.5GHz. Luis Pineda, Senior VP at Qualcomm, assures that the 8X72 is suitable for smartphones (not just smartbooks or netbooks) and can handle 1080p video. Both the 8X50A and 8X72 will be out this year, going head to head with the Tegra 2. [Hexus via Slashgear]

  • Chicago Prosecutor’s Office Leaks Old, Unsubstantiated, Discredited Internal Memo To Smear Innocence Project Founder

Last year, we wrote about the rather troubling situation in Chicago, involving prosecutors who were given information from the famed Medill Innocence Project (which consist of journalism students who examine potential wrongful conviction cases) indicating a wrongful conviction. Rather than use the new evidence, the prosecutors began a campaign against the Innocence Project subpoenaing a ton of information that has no bearing on the case whatsoever, but seem designed to intimidate the journalism students. On top of this, the prosecutors have leaked claims that the students paid witnesses, which appears to be a misreading of a situation where cab fare was paid for by the students, and there was a bit of money left over.

But at every turn it looks like the prosecutor’s office is out to smear, rather than to investigate. The latest, coming via Romenesko, is that the prosecutor’s office released a decades old internal memo that smears the founder of the Innocence Project with claims that are either totally unsubstantiated or entirely discredited. The memo was given to at least two news organizations and has absolutely nothing to do with the case at hand. A spokesperson for the prosectors’ office claimed that the document was distributed, “in the interest of trying to get the whole picture out there,” which is really quite stunning. Again, the document has nothing to do with the case at hand and is either unsubstantiated or totally discredited. It’s hard to see that as anything other than the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office trying to smear the guy in charge of the Innocence Project. It certainly doesn’t seem like an operation seeking truth.

  • Young Boy Rescued from Cougar by Pet Dog

11-year-old Austin Forman and his appropriately-named golden retriever Angel went out to get some firewood this past Sunday evening to feed the family’s wood-burning furnace for the night. Not acting like her usual self, Austin noticed that instead of playing around the yard, Angel was keeping close to his side as he performed his chore.

As he began piling wood, Austin said he saw another animal in the yard but assumed it was a dog. Once it moved under the light, however, he saw that it was a full-grown cougar. 18-month-old Angel reacted quickly, placing herself between the boy and the big cat and taking the brunt of an attack as the cougar lunged and clamped its mouth around Angel’s head. Austin ran inside to tell his mother what was going on, and she called 911.

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer made it to the home within minutes and was able to kill the cougar after firing two shots. Angel, who looked to be in pretty bad shape, was immediately taken to the vet where it was found she had extensive injuries to her head, including a fractured skull and numerous puncture wounds. She’s had surgery and while she’s still recuperating she is expected to make a full recovery.

The family said they’ve bought her a nice, big juicy steak for when she comes home. I’d say she more than deserves it!

  • Costa Rica Photos- Nov. 2009 Vacation/Trip

Here are some new pictures from my two week vacation tour of Costa Rica in November 2009. We rented an SUV and did a circle of the country stopping for a few nights each in La Fortuna / Arenal volcano area, Poas Volcano, Cartago/Orosi valley area, Manuel Antonio, Monteverde cloud forest and finally ending it off at the beach for a few days in Playa Grande which is just north of Tamarindo beach.

I took over 2000 photos there so I am still sorting through them but I have posted about 100 or so photos on the photo album on my website if anyone is interested:
