  • Tori Spelling Third Book “terriTORI” June 2010

Tori Spelling will spill the beans on everything from tabloid rumors about her weight and marriage to her rocky relationship with socialite mom Candy in her forthcoming third book, tentatively titled terriTORI.

“I love sharing my stories and experiences with people and connecting to them on both a humorous and emotional level,” the actress and daughter of late television icon Aaron Spelling told PEOPLE Thursday.

Besides opening up about her often troubled relationship with her mother, Tori, now 36,also plans to reveal what life is like as a Hollywood mother of 2.

“With two kids it’s hard to find down time to write so I often write during their nap time,” Spelling says. “Whenever something happens that makes me laugh or if I remember something in the middle of the night that I want to share, I jot the experience down.”

terriTORI debuts this June. The socialite’s previous books, sTORI Telling and Mommywood, both appeared on The New York Times Best Seller’s List.

  • The Other HP Slate Runs On Android

Last night, during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off a prototype for a new HP Slate computer running on Windows 7. It was supposed to be an Apple-stealing moment and it was Microsoft’s moment, which is probably why Hewlett-Packard has not yet publicly mentioned that it is working on another tablet/slate computer that is running on Android. You know, Google’s mobile operating system.

HP did announce an Android-powered netbook yesterday, but that has a keyboard. A source who has seen a prototype of HP’s Android Slate says it looks just like the Windows-powered one Ballmer held last night (see image below), maybe a little smaller. “It is almost identical in every respect to the one he showed off except for the OS,” says my source.

And that, my friends, could be all the difference in the world. Already, developers have created more than 10,000 apps for Android mobile phones, and the launch of the Nexus One will keep pushing the OS into more and more hands. These apps might have to be modified for a tablet, but it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Already, a number of Android tablets are on the way from Archos, Dell, and Notion Ink. It looks like you can add HP to that list.

The bigger question that all of these Android tablets raise is what about Chrome OS? Maybe these are just stop-gaps until the Chrome Netbooks and Tablets are ready for the market.

What would you rather buy, an HP Slate that runs on Windows 7 or one that runs on Android?

(The video below is a sneak peek at the Windows HP Slate, which is where the image above is taken from):

  • BARRONS: NYPost: Buffett In Trouble Over Kraft Maneuvers?

    By Tiernan Ray

Is Warren Buffett in trouble with the government? That’s the suggestion from The New York Post’s Josh Kosman, who this morning writes that the move by his Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) on Monday to stop Kraft (KFT) from issuing new shares in its bid for Cadbury PLC (CBY) seems foul. The move may have been designed to protect Buffett’s holdings in privately held Mars, another candy maker, according to “sources familiar,” Kosman writes.

Buffett loaned Mars $4.4 billion in 2008 for the company to purchase Wrigley, and lent a further $2 billion following that, Kosman notes.

The article doesn’t actually say anyone from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is looking into the matter, it merely quotes anti-trust lawyers who see a risk of that happening.

In any case, Berkshire’s “A” shares this morning are off by $118, a fraction of a percent, at $99,731. Kraft shares are down 4 cents at $28.93, and Cadbury is down 25 cents, half a percent, at $49.52, after last night’s Wall Street Journal story saying Cadbury’s board has been talking with Hershey (HSY) as a “White Knight” to make a rival bid to push out Kraft.

  • NEW YORK POST: Buffett’s Mars bar

Oracle’s Kraft call draws candy-stake scrutiny

    By JOSH KOSMAN

    Last Updated: 10:06 AM, January 7, 2010

    Posted: 12:59 AM, January 7, 2010

Billionaire Warren Buffett‘s decision to weigh in on Kraft’s hostile pursuit of Cadbury may land him in hot water with Uncle Sam’s antitrust cops.

In voicing his opposition Tuesday to Kraft issuing more shares in order to raise its offer for the British candy maker, sources familiar with the matter said the Oracle of Omaha may have tipped his hand about wanting to protect another candy company in which he has deep ties: Mars.

“To the extent Kraft pays less [for Cadbury], it can be less aggressive in the marketplace” this person said.

Added an antitrust lawyer familiar with the workings of the US Federal Trade Commission: “I think the triggering event [for the FTC to investigate Buffett] could be if his attempt to muck up Kraft’s deal was done to protect his position in Mars.”

    Warren Buffett

    REUTERS
    Warren Buffett

In addition to owning a 9.4 percent stake in Kraft, Buffett also has a large debt and equity position in privately held Mars. In 2008, Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway loaned Mars $4.4 billion to finance its purchase of gum maker Wrigley, and invested another $2.1 billion in Mars in exchange for preferred shares.

A Berkshire Hathaway spokeswoman declined to comment.

Some sources speculated about one reason behind Buffett’s rare decision to issue a tersely worded letter in opposition to Kraft selling more shares. They said if Kraft pays too much for Cadbury, the food giant would be under pressure to boost sales, and perhaps lower prices, in order to sell more candy. That, in turn, could potentially hurt Mars’ market share.

Currently, Mars, which sells M&Ms and Snickers, has around 15 percent of the global candy market. A Kraft-Cadbury combination would boast an equal share.

The antitrust lawyer said the FTC has had an informal policy of not investigating investors with stakes in companies in the same industry when those interests are below 10 percent.

However, in the case of Kraft, Buffett is the largest shareholder and his action Tuesday is likely to have a significant impact on CEO Irene Rosenfeld and what she does next.

“I think this might cause them to look,” the first source said, adding that the FTC’s bureau of competition has become more aggressive.

Indeed, under President Obama, regulators have taken a more aggressive stance when it comes to antitrust issues, going as far as putting Google through its paces on a number of fronts, despite its employees’ deep-pocketed support of his presidential campaign.

If the FTC were to take action, it would likely come before a Jan. 19 deadline for Kraft to submit a bid for Cadbury.

The first step would be asking Berkshire Hathaway for recent letters and documents related to correspondence with Mars and Kraft. If that was not satisfactory, the FTC could issue a subpoena.

Meanwhile, there were reports yesterday that Cadbury directors had approached members of Hershey’s board about the US chocolate company submitting a rival bid. Cadbury execs have said publicly that they see Hershey as a better fit than Kraft.

  • – Lantus Vs Humulin N –

I have only ever used Humulin N(NPH) for my basal insulin, and I use approximately 50-60 units a day.

If using Lantus, in your experience, would the usage units be similar?

I guess it varies from person to person, but I am wondering, typically, if it would go up or down.

I know NPH insulins don’t last as long, and they have a peak, but I am wondering how much of a difference it would make.

  • Destiny Africa Ecosphere – George – R28 billion

R28bn boost for Garden Route Friday, 13 November 2009

Western Cape premier Helen Zille has unveiled a new multimillion-rand development on South Africa’s Garden Route which is expected to turn the region into a major global tourism and business hub.

Known as the Destiny Africa ecosphere project, the US$3.7-billion (R28-billion) initiative will stand on 437 hectares just outside the town of George, located at the eastern end of the Western Cape province and in the centre of the Garden Route. The popular Garden Route spans roughly 200km of South Africa’s southern coast.

George, the sixth-oldest town in South Africa, is known as the business centre of the region and is a sought-after conference and holiday destination. The town already has essential infrastructure in place, including an airport, but has tremendous potential for large-scale development.

The Destiny Africa project will combine business, learning and leisure into a so-called smart city. Components include a top-class conference centre, a business park with an incubator, a university cluster and research centre, about 7 000 residential units, ecotourism and medical tourism facilities, retail opportunities and a waterfront. These interconnected facilities are known as an ecosphere.

Destiny Africa is expected to contribute significantly to South Africa’s economy in the same way as California’s Silicon Valley, India’s information technology hub of Hyderabad, or Singapore. These regions have used the smart city concept to drive economic growth by attracting foreign investment as well as the world’s top specialists and entrepreneurs.

    Mice is nice

Destiny Africa is a private venture steered by Destiny Africa Investment Holdings (DAIH), a company that was set up especially to drive the project.

Construction could take up to 17 years and will result in at least 50 000 new jobs, both directly and indirectly. And this is a conservative estimate, said DAIH director Thys Pretorius, with the nearby communities of Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp benefiting most of all.

The project centres on the Mice concept – meetings, incentives, conferences and expositions – which forms the core of sustainable business tourism. This sector of the tourism industry is growing globally and South Africa is no exception. The country’s many attractions and top venues helped it to reach number 35 on the International Congress and Convention Association’s global ranking for 2007.

However, said Pretorius, only 5% of South Africa’s annual $2.8-billion (R21-billion) Mice revenue comes from overseas. He said that Destiny Africa, with its multi-faceted offerings, would help to open up all the opportunities that are currently not exploited.

Pretorius said that Destiny Africa aimed to become the continent’s most sought-after Mice destination. At the same time it would promote the Garden Route, most of which lies within the Cape Floral Kingdom, as a superior eco-tourism region.

He also anticipated a reversal in the trend of skilled workers leaving the country, saying that the smart city would attract smart people and smart business.

The first element to be built, according to DAIH, will be the conference and exhibition centre.

    Rich biodiversity
For its small area, the Garden Route is the most bio-diverse region in the world. It is said that only the rainforests hold more biodiversity, although they are spread over a much larger area.

Government is currently in the process of establishing a new national park there to encompass notable features such as the current Wilderness and Tsitsikamma national parks, the fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom, marine and aquatic systems and the largest continuous stretch of indigenous forest in the country.

George is a historically significant location, with features such as the 198-year-old Old Slave Tree, which is a national monument. This huge oak tree is so named because of the chain and lock embedded near the bottom of its trunk. It is not certain if the chain is linked to slavery, or was used merely to prevent things from being stolen.

Originally a timber town, George was established in 1776 by the Dutch East India Company as an outpost. The town fell into the Swellendam magisterial district but was separated from it in 1806. In 1811 the town was officially proclaimed by then governor of the Cape, the Earl of Caledon, and named after George III, the reigning British monarch.

George is twinned with Tacoma in Washington, US, and Fuzhou in China.

    Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205:

Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205 Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205 Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205 Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205

    Press Release:

STI to introduce the Subaru Impreza “R205″

Tokyo, January 7, 2010 – Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI)* is pleased to announce the launch of the Subaru Impreza “R205″, a special performance version. The model will go on sale today through Subaru dealerships in Japan.

Based on the Impreza WRX STI, the R205 enhanced the sheer driving performance it shares with former special performance models, such as the “S203″ and the “S204″, developed by STI. The R205 is the top performance model of the WRX STI. It features new and exclusive equipment and makes full use of specially designed features and performance parts of the “WRX STI spec C” model, the sporty performance model launched 2009. The “R” of R205 stands for “Road Sport”.

Most efforts focused on refining handling performance by adopting STI tuned dampers, coil springs, flexible type strut tower bar, flexible type lower arm stiffener of front suspension, and Bridgestone’s specially designed RE070 tyres. Thus the R205 ideally balances agile driving and confident driveability by enhancing a linear steering response and excellent road-holding capability. This is exactly the distinctive ride quality that STI is pursuing as its vehicle development theme, “strength and nimbleness” driving. The R205 offers enhanced total driving control not only in city driving on the road or winding road but also in sporty driving at the circuit.

In addition, STI carried out verification tests of selected performance parts of the R205 through the participation of the 2009 Nurburgring 24-hour race with an Impreza WRX STI. Making full use of this precious race-track experience at Nurburgring – in which any road condition is condensed – STI successfully completed the model in order to offer sheer excitement and unique driving feeling as a distinctive “Road Sport Model”.

The R205 delivers an increased 235kW (320PS) of maximum output, and 431N.m (44.0kg.m) by adopting the exclusively designed turbocharger with ball bearings for the turbine axle bearing, specially tuned ECU (Engine Control Unit), and the sport muffler with lowered back pressure exhaust. SI-DRIVE (SUBARU Intelligent Drive) is also available to neatly suit driving style in any driving situation at driver’s command.

The front under spoiler, newly developed rear under spoiler, and the black rear spoiler improve aerodynamics. Exclusively designed 18-inch alloy wheels, specially colored front grille and side STI garnish accentuate its uniqueness.

  • Return to Biosphere 2

What happens to a building designed as a science experiment on sustainable habitats after 25 years? It slowly but surely falls apart. Sustainability exists only under two support models: total reliance on nature and high-technology-high-maintenance. Biosphere 2 was a case for the latter, and is swiftly being reclaimed by the former model. Although the Fulleresque skeleton seems to be holding up nicely, the carefully cultivated plantlife succumbed to the desert environment. Keep that in mind if you’re launching yourself on a 250kiloton asteroid for a 1,000 year journey a la Charles Stross.

  • “Google Energy” Subsidiary: What’s Google Up To?

Could Google one day sell you electricity? This week E&E News and CNET are reporting that the search engine giant has created a subsidiary called “Google Energy,” which is looking to buy and sell electricity on federally regulated wholesale markets. Google has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) — the group that oversees the U.S. electrical network — for permission to do so.

Google’s Niki Fenwick told us (and is quoted in the other media reports) that Google has no plans to become an energy seller but that the creation of Google Energy is an attempt to proactively address hurdles it could face in its plans to go carbon neutral. Given the legal permission to act as a utility — basically buying and selling clean energy (it owns a large rooftop solar project at its headquarters) — Google could help offset its carbon emissions that result from its large power needs.

While creating Google Energy and asking permission to buy and sell electricity is definitely an unusual move for an Internet company, it’s not entirely unheard of for a large company to form a wholesale power firm. Nathaniel Bullard, an analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, pointed out to me that Wal-Mart created Texas Retail Energy, which allows it to procure its own power and get the lowest-cost electricity for their warehouses and retail stores.

When news about Wal-Mart’s energy firm came out in 2007 there was a lot of speculation that Wal-Mart would get into the electricity selling business, and Wal-Mart said it hadn’t fully ruled that out for the long term.

Wal-Mart formed the power firm to find the lowest electricity, while Google says the move is more to address clean energy and carbon emissions. But perhaps the real aim of Google Energy is, like Wal-Mart, to find the lowest cost electricity period. Google uses a massive amount of energy to power its servers and has been looking at a variety of ways to lower their energy bills through energy conservation measures. Just having more control over the supply of energy could help cut the monthly energy bill. Google’s Fenwik tells me that Google wants to buy the most affordable renewable energy that it can.

Google’s Fenwick told CNET that for Google Energy, “We don’t have any concrete plans.” I think that answer is probably not a way to dodge the issue — Google has a lot of aggressive and far-reaching projects that they don’t necessarily think through fully before starting to implement them.

As Google’s energy guru Bill Weihl told the New York Times this week:

[I]f you don’t say five years later, “We never should have done that” about a significant percentage of it [company projects], then you’re being way too conservative. So the stuff we’re doing under the Google.org umbrella on alternative energy, some of it doesn’t connect very closely to Google’s core business, some of it does, and that’s O.K.

But then again, companies like Google and Apple deny for years some of their bigger and extreme projects like building mobile phones. So while Google might just be experimenting for now, it’s probably safe to say that nothing is off the table for Google Energy.

Barack Obama put his reputation on the line at Copenhagen by saying America would act on climate change. Now it’s up to Congress. The House of Representatives passed the Waxman-Markey bill last June which would set a price on carbon, and would put progressively tighter limits on greenhouse gas emissions with a 17 percent cut from 2005 levels by 2020, and 80 percent by 2050.

Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat, passed a nearly identical version of the bill out of the Senate environment committee last November. But action in the Senate has stalled. Boxer stared down a Republican boycott to get a bill through her committee. But Democrats are deeply reluctant to throw themselves into another full-on confrontation with Republicans so soon after the bruising battle over health care reform.

    What happens next?

U.S. environmental organizations say there is still a good chance the Senate will move ahead on a climate change bill this year.  A triumvirate of Senators—Democrat John Kerry, Republican Lindsey Graham, and Independent Joe Lieberman—are working to craft a climate change bill they think would have a good chance of getting support from Republican as well as Democratic Senators. Kerry had earlier promised a blueprint late last year. The newest deadline is at the end of this month. The Senate is then expected to begin its push in the spring.

Did the Copenhagen climate summit hurt or help prospects for the bill?

Obama’s 13 hours on the ground diplomacy at Copenhagen was seen as evidence of his commitment to action—which should help give momentum to the bill. The deal reached at Copenhagen by the biggest emitters—though it fell far short of hopes for the summit—also includes important concessions from China to begin curbing its rate of emissions, and to open its books on how it cuts emissions. That will help neutralize the argument that China is not doing its bit, and that America would give up competitive advantage if it took on energy reform.

Will the Senate bill look just like Waxman-Markey?

Not entirely. Kerry and Graham are determined to get Republican support, which means there will mean a number of hard compromises for environmentalists. One is an expansion of nuclear power, with Republicans pushing hard for more cheap government loans for new plants, plus streamlined regulations. There is also a push for offshore oil drilling. Other ideas include limiting the kinds of industries that would be compelled to begin reducing their emissions. One proposal under discussion would only put an emissions cap on power plants.

What about the U.S. midterm elections?

The Democrats anticipate losses in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2010 elections which will further impair the prospects of getting climate change law. But even the approach of the 2010 elections are making an impact.

Democratic leaders say the Senate must pass climate change bill by spring 2010, if there is to be any U.S. legislation at all. Democrats from coal and old industry states will be cautious about signing up to sweeping energy and climate laws in the run-up to midterm elections in November 2010. The oil, coal and manufacturing lobbies have been spending millions to frame the proposed laws as measures that will fuel unemployment and increase home heating bills.

What if the Senate fails to act?

Climate change legislation may stall in the Senate, but the federal government, and several states and cities are moving ahead. The business world is also coming on side. The Obama administration has raised fuel efficiency standards for cars. California, the biggest state, has ordered power companies to get one-third of its electricity from clean and renewable energy by 2020. Perhaps most importantly, the Environmental Protection Agency said last month that it would begin regulating greenhouse gas emissions. However, some Republicans want to keep the EPA out of that role. The Senate is due to vote on January 20 on whether to delay EPA regulatory action.

How does this affect a global deal to curb carbon emissions?

One of the key outcomes from Copenhagen is a commitment from industrialized countries to raise $100 billion a year from 2020 to help the most vulnerable countries adapt to climate change. But America’s promise to mobilize its share of the $100 billion depends on the establishment of a carbon market—which will be created through climate change legislation. Obama administration officials have said America will raise its share from a variety of sources—not just government funds. No climate change law means no U.S. carbon market and sharply reduced funds for poor countries.

  • New CCH White Paper Provides In-Depth Look at Provisions of Financial Regulatory Reform Legislation

A new white paper from CCH provides in-depth analysis of the securities, derivatives, corporate governance, systemic risk and dissolution authority components of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, passed by the House in December.

CCH is part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, a leading provider of research information and software solutions in key specialty areas for legal and business professionals (business.cch.com).

To read the special new report, House Passes Historic Securities, Derivatives and Systemic Risk Reforms: HR 4173, click here, or visit cch.com/press/news/CCHWhitePaperHR4173.pdf.

“This bill would be the most significant reform of the U.S. financial system since the New Deal of the 1930s,” said white paper author and CCH Principal Securities Analyst Jim Hamilton, JD.

The legislation would create a Financial Services Oversight Council to monitor systemically significant financial institutions, counterparties and potential threats to the financial system.

This ensures that there is no place to hide by closing loopholes, improving consolidated supervision and establishing robust regulatory oversight.

The measure also would provide for the orderly wind-down of failing firms that are systemically significant, ending the notion of “too big to fail.”

By dissolving these firms, the Act would end them and avoid more taxpayer bailouts. The bill also offers robust consumer protections and reforms.

It puts the regulation of consumer protection on a level playing field with the regulation of safety and soundness of financial institutions.

It would create an independent agency focused solely on writing meaningful consumer protection standards and keeping watch over predatory practices that some lenders have shown a propensity to pursue.

Moreover, the legislation increases transparency and accountability by establishing, for the first time, a regulatory system for the over-the-counter derivatives market.

Under the new regime, most derivative trades will take place on exchanges or through clearinghouses. Other important aspects of the bill include the registration of hedge funds and the doubling of SEC funding to hire more experts and investigators.

Investor protection is substantially strengthened. Also, the regulation of credit rating agencies is enhanced under a new regime supervised by the SEC.

A federal insurance office is created to gather information, mitigate systemic risk and provide for insurance expertise to the federal government.

The legislation passed by the House is different from the proposal issued by the Senate Banking Committee last year.

A conference committee will likely have to iron out any differences, assuming that the Senate proposal is passed by the full body.
