If you want to rock your MP3 tunes old school style, the new Rad Blaster is for you. The Rad Blaster is shaped like the boomboxes of yesteryear, only in miniature size. And I mean miniature – this thing is tiny.

Though small, the Rad Blaster has built-in speakers so you can share the tunes with your homies on the block. You can play your own music or record your dope rhymes directly into the Rad Blaster.

    Screen shot 2009-12-17 at 5.44.51 PM.png

This thing is also a flash drive/thumb drive, so you can store all your important files on it, though taking the Rad Blaster into a business meeting is probably not recommended unless you happen to work at a hip hop music studio.

You can pick one up for $59.99 at Suburban Toys.

Delorme PN-60w with Spot connectivity gets official, can track your friends, too
As it turns out yesterday’s news from Delorme about the PN-60w wasn’t exactly from DeLorme. Now the official news from the source has dropped, and it includes a few tidbits not revealed yesterday. We’ll start with the bad news first: the social networking functionality here is outgoing only, meaning you can brag to your friends about making it to the top of Half Dome without plummeting to your death, but you won’t be able to receive their jealous responses. For the good news, you will not only be able to send tweets and the like but can also log geocache locations directly from wherever you find them, and interestingly the device can create a sort of local area network, able to display the location of everyone within range and even easily exchange waypoints. That should make not losing your friends in the woods a little easier — but sometimes that’s half the fun of hiking.

  • Alison Rosen, Alison Rosen Biography

As part of the study, the researchers forecasted the life expectancy for a typical 18-year-old from 2005-2020 based on past trends in smoking and BMI. They found that declining smoking rates would add to that 18-year-old’s life expectancy by 0.31 year over this period, while rising obesity rates would hold it back by 1.02 years, resulting in total in a reduced life expectancy of 0.71 years from these two factors.

The study did not take in account other factors that might affect life expectancy, such as advances in medical care. Life expectancy might still rise overall because of such factors, but the rate of rise will likely be slowed by the increases in obesity.

If all U.S. adults became nonsmokers of normal weight by 2020, life expectancy would shoot up to 3.76 years, the researchers estimated.

“The hypothetical scenario of having everyone a non-smoker of normal weight may be unachievable. But these results show the dramatic toll that both smoking and obesity can have on both the length of life and the quality of life,” says Rosen.

Obesity contributes to the development of several chronic diseases, from cardiovascular disease to cancer. In fact, a recent study found that more than 100,000 cancers in the US each year are linked to excess body fat.

“Public health efforts to discourage smoking have worked, and a similar effort could help turn around obesity rates,” Rosen says.

To reduce your risk of being excessively overweight, the American Cancer Society recommends balancing calorie intake with physical activity. Eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day, choose whole grains over processed grains, and limit red meat. Adults should engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity 5 days a week or more.

If you smoke, the American Cancer Society can help you quit. Call 1-800-ACS-2345 for information on counseling and other services that can help you quit for good

“Even modest weight loss and reductions in smoking at the individual level can have substantial effects on population health,” the researchers write.

  • Lindsay Lohan Punched Man For Harassing Sister Ali

LiLo wasn’t kidding when she promised fans a year of “Lohan Mayhem” in 2K10. The actress’ New Year got off to a rocky start after she punched a man for flirting with her kid sister. Lohan was enjoying her holidays on a yacht off the coast of St. Barts with her 16-year-old sister Ali, but the vacation took an ugly turn after the 23-year-old confronted a man who got too close to young Ali during a night out at a local club, Britain’s Daily Mail said Thursday.

“Lindsay repeatedly warned the guy to leave Ali alone. When he didn’t, she viciously punched him. Bodyguards arrived quickly to stop the fight and Ali returned to the boat,” says a spy.

Early Monday morning, Fame Pictures snapped exclusive photos that show Lindsay and Ali crying aboard a yacht while talking on their cell phones.

  • The Scorpion – Eton’s solar powered radio

    Eton_Scorpion_Radio.jpg
The concept of utilizing renewable sources of energy especially solar energy is being put to use in every nook and corner of the world today. So much that even radios have come to use solar energy to power themselves up now. Portable radios may have become outdated due to the use of mp3 players that have inbuilt radio capabilities nowadays; however the Eton Scorpion is here to make the difference. Most Eton radios can be powered up using batteries or cranks. This recent launch though is juiced up using solar power. The crank saves it from embarrassing moments like bad weather when the radio is needed the most and the sun doesn’t show up.

The only shortcoming of this radio is the lack of an external charging capability. The Scorpion has a digital radio tuner, NOAA weather stations and also packs a flashlight and bottle opener incase you decide to take it outdoors. For the price of just $50, you can buy this solar powered gadget that does its bit to save the environment.

  • Devon GTX Miscarriage

One of the most anticipated arrivals in the supercar world this year, the Devon GTX, has been scrapped due to several reasons, most of them out of the control of Devon. According to Piston Heads, the Devon GTX is no longer partially because of Chrysler’s decision to kill Viper, on whose platform the GTX is based. The other main reason is the cost of the car.

"The Viper platform being discontinued and the inability to amortize tooling costs are the key reasons," Devon sa… (read more)

  • 2 Million Downloads and Counting: Why Such Loyalty for Microsoft Office?

Logo_MSFTOffice2010_187x54.jpgIn the past seven weeks, more than 2 million people have downloaded the beta for Microsoft Office 2010. That’s a whopping 40,000 downloads per day. It’s a record breaking pace, surpassing the beta release for Microsoft Office 2007.

It begs the question: In the face of so many free options, why are people so loyal to Microsoft Office?

    Sponsor

There are a few possible reasons:

Microsoft has a locked in user base. It is an enterprise standard. As the story goes, no one has ever been fired for buying Microsoft.

As one person replied to the question on Aardvark: “A lot of the free options simply aren’t suitable for corporate use. You are basically out of luck if your free-no-guarantees Google Docs spreadsheet disappears. The free products do not have the complex formulas, interconnecting tables and client data that comes with Microsoft Office.”

Another person stated on Aardvark: “That is because it is the most accepted office package. Try doing business without the capability. I had to purchase it just to be able to work at home instead of extended office hours. Now I am loading Open Office on all computers I repair and send out. I also think Google is going to do a large bite into Microsoft business.”

How long will the loyalty last?

This is where we wonder about how the events over the past few days may affect the future of Microsoft Office. Google is coming on strong with it’s Nexus One. Couple that with its big push into the enterprise and you have to wonder what Microsoft is going to do to counter Google’s undeniable momentum.

We are still waiting Windows Mobile 7. LG did let it slip at CES yesterday that Windows Mobile 7 will be available later this year. The Microsoft Office Web Apps are in beta with limited usability. The full-featured version will be available in the Spring. It will require a Sharepoint server. The free edition will only allow you to view documents.

Enterprise 2.0 applications are a whole other issue. Its user interfaces are web-oriented and mobile-friendly. This new breed of applications will be increasingly enticing to Office customers.

Two million downloads is impressive but loyalty is a fickle thing. The real test is still to come.

  • Youtu.be Trumps Goo.gl and Fb.me in URL Shortener Market Share

The URL shortener ‘wars’ have quieted down lately and everyone was getting accustomed to Bit.ly’s unchallenged dominance in the space. With close to 80 percent market share a few months ago and still enjoying its position as the default shortener on twitter.com, the outcome seemed more than clear. These days, things are looking a bit more diversified and with a number of big players like Google and Facebook rolling out their own services, things are getting interesting again.

TweetMeme, a Twitter aggregator which uses the microblogging service to determine which are the most popular links at any point in time, runs a URL shortener stats page which shows the state of the market based on the links that pass through it. The site got a recent overhaul which also affected the stat tracker so TechCrunch set out to see the state of the market at the beginning of 2010.

Unsurprisingly, Bit.ly still enjoys a solid lead, but its market share seems to have vanished in the past couple of months. While it got as much as 80 percent of the market in summer, it now hovers at 55 to 60 percent. This may seem a bit puzzling at first, as there hasn’t been anything that would affect the market to such a degree, but it turns out that TweetMeme changed the metric it displays, and now shows absolute market share an… (read more)

  • Japan’s New Kamikaze Finance Minister Is On A Mission To Blow Up The Yen, And Finally Let The Nikkei Surge

    yukio hatoyama japan

How significant is the changing of the guard in Japan, where Hirohisa Fujii has just resigned, and been replaced by Naoto Kan?

Joshua Brown at The Reformed Broker argues that it’s very important.

Why? Because Kan appears serious about weakening the yen, and inducing the kind of weak-currency led rally that we’ve seen in the US.

Upon taking office, the strong Yen was one of the first things he addressed: “There are a lot of voices in the business world saying that the dollar around Y95 is appropriate in terms of trade…in cooperation with the Bank of Japan, I will make efforts to…bring the exchange rate to appropriate levels.”

Just a few days into 2010, and the idea that it could be a huge year for Japanese markets is rapidly gaining traction. Byron Wien identified a big year for Japan as one of his surprises. Marc Faber called it the ultimate contrarian bet. The Pragmatic Capitalist also gave four reasons why it offered an excellent contrarian opportunity.

With a new Bernanke-like finance minister in place, it appears the stars are aligning.

The authorities had to intervene when the friends of late heiress Casey Johnson arrived at the home of her fiancee, Tila, on Wednesday and began corralling the socialite’s pets and possessions. Tila has taken to the Internet to state her case – and is extremely unhappy about the dogs being taken.

“My Fiance and I had been living together at my house for about a month now, with all of our dogs! 3 Total, and today these ‘mean Girls’ bombarded MY HOME, to try to take the pups away so they can put them to sleep so they can bury the dogs with Casey,” the ex-reality star blogged late Wednesday.

  • Brand New National Airline for Senegal launched: Senegal Airlines

    Quote:

Senegal Airlines presented to global media at 2009 Dubai Air Show

    * United Arab Emirates: Monday, November 16 – 2009 at 15:25

Dubai Air Show witnessed a truly historical event today at the official public unveiling of the new national carrier of the Republic of Senegal, Senegal Airlines. Established to commercially exploit the gap left with the departure of Air Senegal International, the new airline will take to the skies in early 2010.

Addressing the media today, Senior State Minister Karim Wade elaborated on the shape and form of the company that will be Senegal Airlines and under the GAS – Group Air Senegal umbrella: "The Government united some of the leading private investment firms and individuals in the country and delivered a solid platform from which they will build and develop Senegal’s new national airline. The new carrier is of national economic and social interest and, very importantly, is also demanded by the market that it will serve."

Senegal Government will not take part in the daily running of the new carrier but will retain a minority stake in Senegal Airlines.
The company’s founding capital is valued at $34m, with the private sector retaining the majority 64% stake holding; Public Sector will hold a 15% share, while the employees will have their own allocation equivalent to 5%. The Government will retain the remaining 16% as a sign of its confidence in the flag carrier and its intention for continuous future support of the company.

Wide reach – from Senegal to Africa and Europe, in comfort and style

The new airline is expected to gradually introduce a comprehensive network from Dakar to more than 20 destinations that will include regional capitals such as Abidjan, Bamako and Banjul, as well as other major points in West Africa – such as Accra and Lagos. Intercontinental services will ultimately reach Paris, Nice, Milan and Brussels amongst others. A fleet plan that includes new, modern single-aisle medium range and wide-body long-range airliners will be announced tomorrow, at a separate press conference.

Flying Senegal Airlines will give passengers a truly memorable travel experience and reaffirm the fact that modern, dynamic and safe airlines are present on the continent. Passengers will have a choice of two-class cabins on all flights. A state-of-the-art Business Class – "ClasseAvant", will unite comfortable seating, latest in-flight entertainment and onboard communications with the finest culinary experience while economy class passengers too can expect their journeys to be a remarkable voyage of fine dining and blockbuster entertainment at 35,000 feet.

The proud colours of the nation – Celebrating the Senegal Airlines identity

The new airline’s acting CEO, Mr Modou Khaya, proudly presented the new corporate logo and aircraft livery of Senegal Airlines which showcases the rich and colorful African traditions, blended with the spirit and national insignia of Senegal; "The livery of Senegal Airlines symbolizes motion, progress and striving for success. The logo of the airline contains two out of the three national colours, reaffirming the company’s origins and home base. The title "Senegal Airlines" in the logo is supported and given lift by a graphical image that depicts the three colour patches which represent the national flag of Senegal. The logo, due to its wing shape, also symbolizes flying and aviation. From another perspective, this graphical image is also envisaged to represent the waves of the Atlantic and the beautiful Senegalese coastline. Finally, the waving/spreading feathers of a wing symbolism is there to graphically depict the friendly reach of Senegal to the rest of the world, thanks to the national airline, bridging the geographical and cultural gaps between nations.

The slogan and motto of the new Senegalese flag carrier is "Join the skies in celebration"; and we trust that you will all do just that with us.
