Firefox 3.6 RC1 Released
Mozilla has made the first release candidate for Firefox 3.6 available for download this morning, following a recent announcement that further releases would be delayed.Firefox 3.6, codename “Namoroka”, looks to improve startup time and general responsiveness, among other issues.
For those of us who aren’t in the know about software versioning, as a “release candidate”, Mozilla is hoping this is what Firefox 3.6, without the asterisk, is going to look like.
“Should everything run smoothly during testing this is what will be released to our users as the official version after a beta period,” reads the description on Mozilla’s development wiki.

Johns Hopkins launches start-up program that pairs researchers with business execs
The Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County campus in Rockville, MD, is starting a technology commercialization and entrepreneurship program based on a similar initiative at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, which has led to the formation of more than 25 companies since its inception in 2005. Called “Innovate!”, the one-year program will take 15 business executives and 15 postdoctoral entrepreneurs through the process of evaluating a technology’s commercial potential and starting a business around that product. Products will come from the National Institutes of Health, Hopkins, and other research institutions and federal agencies. The university’s Carey Business School will launch the program in February, funded through a National Science Foundation grant. The University of Maryland’s “Activate” program has helped launch companies such as Foligo Therapeutics, a Rockville biopharmaceutical company developing products to treat ovarian cancer. That program was also supported by grants from the NSF as well as from the Maryland Technology Development Corp.

CES Rant: When Mobile Tech Seems to be Too Hard
The CES 2010 show hasn’t officially kicked off yet, but I have a full day of show-related activities under my belt already. The endless walking, shaking hands and jostling for position to get a better look at a particular gadget got started from the moment I hit the tarmac in Las Vegas, and it will continue at a frantic pace the whole week.It may seem early in the trip to be ranting about something that is giving me trouble, but to a blogger connectivity is vital and when it fails, things get miserable in a hurry. That’s my big trouble so far, the hotel network is abysmal to say the least. It never fails to surprise me why big, expensive hotels always seem to have the worst network connectivity than that in other hotels.
Even hole-in-the-wall cheapo motels have good network connectivity these days. It can’t be that expensive or difficult to do as you can find good connectivity in almost any hotel, except gigantic, big buck palaces like these in Las Vegas. Most hotels on the Strip offer wireless connectivity for a big daily charge, and it’s a fee many of us are willing to pay if it allows us to get our work done. What is a total killer to us is when the hotel includes the connectivity in a special mandatory daily “resort fee”, and the connectivity turns out to be problematic at best.
That is my exact situation in the Venetian Hotel. Wonderful place, but they insist on charging a $15 mandatory daily resort fee to the room. This fee allows you access, not necessarily free access, to different amenities the hotel offers; that includes the in-room network connectivity. It is offered with both wired and wireless access, so things should be fine. The problem is the connectivity is difficult to tap into, and once connected it is spotty as can be.
The wired connection doesn’t work at all, and the wireless is an exercise in futility. Some times I can connect fine, others not at all. The real frustrating part is how connections are totally inconsistent when made. The bandwidth is nice and fast for a few minutes, then either slows to a crawl or drops me off the network altogether. This is fatal for blogging, as I have already lost posts in progress a couple of times due to the network failing when the post is being saved.
I have been using the Verizon MiFi in the hotel room, and it is working as wonderfully as it always does. The bandwidth is good in the hotel, and the connections are solid. So why even bother with the hotel Wi-Fi? Other than the fact I am paying a mandatory fee for room Wi-Fi, using the MiFi drains the battery. I like to have it fully charged when I leave the room for the show events, and that doesn’t happen when I am using it in the room too. For some reason connecting the MiFi to the Thinkpad via USB, something I have done many times, is not working. The access software will not see the MiFi no matter what I do. This forces me to use it on battery over Wi-Fi. The MiFi works well; I just need the battery to be full when I leave for the day.
These network problems have pointed out a glaring problem with the Google Chrome browser. I have been using Chrome as my default browser on the ThinkPad as it is faster than Firefox under Windows 7, and is a solid performer all around. What I have discovered to force me to change back to Firefox is that when the connection gets very spotty, Chrome has a tendency to hang up. It can even hang up the entire system, and once the browser hangs it doesn’t always resume when the connection heals. Firefox does a good job at resuming the session when the network reappears, so I have switched back to using it by default. Having seen this side of the Chrome browser, it makes me wonder how well the Chrome OS will handle spotty connections, given its “always connected” nature.
So come on big hotels — get your act together and get your networks up to par. It is 2010, we expect (and need) good connectivity when we stay in your house.
UPDATE: This post took me well over an hour to complete due to the connectivity issues. I got fed up, and reinstalled the Verizon Access Manager in an attempt to resolve my MiFi USB issue. That worked, and I am now able to connect seamlessly, and more importantly stay connected, vit the MiFi over USB. It’s not the best solution for uploading videos, but for everything else it will work like a champ. I am much happier than I was when I began this post.

Sigue elevada la deforestación en Brasil
BRASILIA, EFE

Vehicle Assembly Building
Florida, US | Inspired Inventions
The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida is the world’s fourth largest building by volume. Completed in 1966, the VAB also holds the record of the largest one-story building in the world and the tallest building outside an urban center in the United States.
At an astonishing 160 meters (525 feet) tall, 218 meters (716 feet) long, and 158 meters (518 feet) wide, the VAB covers an area of eight acres and encloses a volume of about 3,665,000 cubic meters (129,428,000 cubic feet). To get an idea of how large that is, the total volume of the VAB is about 3.75 times that of Manhattan’s Empire State Building. That’s enough space to fit the volume of Pentagon inside and have plenty of room left over!
The VAB is so large, in fact, that it has its own weather. On humid days, rain clouds can form below the ceiling, requiring about 10,000 tons of air conditioning equipment to control the moisture. With this setup, the total volume of air in the building can be replaced in only one hour.
The records held by the VAB are not limited to its interior, however. The exterior boasts one of the largest American flags, completed with 6,000 gallons of paint. At 64 meters (209 feet) high and 33.5 meters (110 feet) wide, the stars are six feet across, the stripes are nine feet wide, and the blue portion is approximately the size of a regulation basketball court.
Originally built to accommodate the vehicle assembly for the Apollo and Saturn missions, the VAB underwent renovations to support the Space Shuttle. With the shuttle’s retirement slated for 2010, the VAB will serve as the construction site for the Ares vehicles. From this building, NASA’s space-bound vehicles leave through one of the building’s four doors. The doors, which are the largest in the world, each measure 139 meters (456 feet) high. While tall enough to easily fit the Statue of Liberty, the doors take 45 minutes to open or close.
From these doors, the six-million pound Crawler-Transporter begins the slow process of moving the space vehicles to the launch pad several miles away. At a mere one mile per hour, and a gas-guzzling 42 feet per gallon, the Crawler can position the vehicle for launch with an accuracy of one inch.
While the exterior of the VAB can be seen regularly on guided tours of the Kennedy Space Center, opportunities to view the building’s interior are a much rarer occurrence.

Riversimple Hyrban FCV Plans Being Published Online
Yesterday I pondered a pairing between the Horizon HydroFill home hydrogen refueling products and the Riversimple fuel cell vehicle. In June 2009 I had talked about how the Riversimple, which by the way carries a Horizon 6 kw fuel cell, is an open source vehicle that many are able to develop simultaneously, which will speed this product to market. Now, it has been announced that the Riversimple Hyrban FCV plans are being published, “All of the designs for Riversimple’s Hyrban will be published on the web, starting with the car’s rear suspension layout. The idea is to speed up development by gathering criticism and comment from users, which will also help to cut the costs of the technology.”
Riversimple has licensed the open source technology to 40fires.org and the rear suspension plans can be found at the link provided. There are wikis, forums, galleries, news and blogs plus a description of the projects.
One exciting aspect about the Riversimple Hyrban is that this is a community project and not just an internal proprietary creation by one of the big automakers. Community input is vital to the success or failure of the Hyrban.
In addition, the building of the Hyrban will be extremely flexible in that it will most likely be built in small numbers between 5,000 and 10,000 and can be built in many different countries taking regional differences in tastes plus functionality into account.

Restauri Artistici Squatriti – Ospedale delle Bambole
In a cobblestone alley near the Piazza del Popolo, a weather-striped window showcases the porcelain heads, limbs, and bodies of dolls long lost and in complete disrepair. Above the ghastly repository of broken faces pressed to the glass, small owl figurines perch menacingly. What appears to be Rome’s own little shop of horrors is actually the Restauri Artistici Squatriti, known to Romans as “un’ospedale delle bambole,” or a dolls’ hospital. Here, Federico Squatrito and his mother Gelsomina nurse ailing dolls and other porcelain objects back to health.
The minuscule workspace is approximately 50 square feet and pungent is the odor of glue and solvents, the “medications” Squatrito doles out to his porcelain patients. The walls and counters are covered with parts of broken toys and figurines, along with antique plates, vases, and any number of mysterious objects waiting for Squatrito to give them new life.
Though the cluttered shop might be intriguing enough to draw the attention of passersby, the contents of the collection are as worthy of a visit as the shop window itself. Because Squatrito is equally adept at repairing an ancient Roman platter as he is an heirloom plaything, visitors may encounter any number of curiosities – and stories – when they stop by.

Engineering Engagement: Beyond the lab and the drawing board
Course Description
Many engineering and science related projects around the world require public approval, but how is the public engaged and what models exist for ensuring that engagement is truly fair or that the public is making informed decisions based on an understanding of the problem? This is a criteria for many World Bank projects in developing countries where “community participation” is required, but where less attention is paid to the level or quality of community participation which in many cases ends up being an information/infomercial session for local communities. How is this done locally, on campus or in surrounding communities? What does a truly informed community look like and what mechanisms exist for their views to be incorporated into decision making processes? To answer some of these questions requires us to understand the decision making and management processes that take place on local levels all the way up to national and sometimes global levels. This class takes a stormwater pond example in a local community, East Tampa, and looks at decisions that affect its functioning, where they are made and how that information is communicated locally. The class builds on, and works with an existing project called Water Awareness Research and Education in East Tampa aimed at raising environmental awareness in East Tampa. Phrased in terms of 5 pillars of sustainability (environmental, social, economic, cultural, political), the class will ask students to focus more on the pillars of cultural and political which are usually absent from engineering disciplines.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
1) Define stormwater ponds and various regulations that apply to their existence.
2) Discuss the role of stormwater ponds and their relation to local communities.
3) Identify the various agencies responsible for stormwater managemet and show how their decisions are integrated into activities of people within East Tampa.
4) Discuss ways in which activities of people within East Tampa influence stormwater management decisions.
5) Demonstrate how the five pillars of sustainability contribute to good engineering results.
6) Describe weekly activities done in the field and communicate that experience through online blogs and reflective essays.
7) Communicate through professional quality presentations, project reports and community reports.
8) Work in teams on various assignments including a final project report and presentation that reflects the work done by all members of the class.

Class participation
All students are expected to regularly participate in the class discussions and to be present at every class session. A mandatory bus tour of East Tampa is included as a part of the class schedule in week 2 and everyone is expected to attend.
Service learning field hours
All students are expected to complete 15 hours of service learning field hours. This will include attendance at a minimum of 3 meetings of the East Tampa Community Revitalization Partnership (ETCRP) or one its subcommittees. Each hour spent in the field is worth 10 points. Although there are 15 weeks in the semester, you will not begin your field hours until week 4. You are expected to spend at least one hour per week in the field between weeks 4 and week 14. Under the WARE-EAST TAMPA (Water Awareness Research and Education in East Tampa) project, I have established relationships with various elementary to middle schools in East Tampa around stormwater ponds. Your additional field hours will include working in one of those classrooms over the semester. Matching with classrooms will be done during week 2 of the project. You will be required to have your fingerprints taken and will have to fill out a student volunteer form to be approved by the school.
Assignments
There will be 10 graded assignments over the course of the semester, each worth 10 points. You will work in groups of two on these assignments with one person being in charge of only 5. These assignments will be based on class lectures, readings and research that you do on your own.
Safe-Assignment and other plagiarism checking methods may be used to ensure academic honesty.
Fieldwork journal blog: You will be asked to use the blog tool in blackboard. Each week you will post your field notes and class experience, including any important information/contacts you discovered or used. These are due by Monday at 8 am to be considered for a grade. This is due for all 15 weeks of the class with each blog worth 10 points.
Deliverable to community partner: You will have to prepare a product to be given to the community partner (teacher/students) with whom you worked that summarizes your own findings as a part of the class. It is likely that we will present this at one of the community meetings and samples from your individual reports will be used for this presentation.
Project report: The class project will be an overall report summarizing results from the entire class. The goal of the class was to understand how rules get set for controlling pollutant levels in stormwater ponds and how that process involves people at various levels of the decision making process. Specific to this class are how that information is translated to various groups in a local community. Each student is expected to enthusiastically and professionally contribute to the team project through research, writing, and presentation. Rubrics for grading of this project report will be distributed during the semester.
In class presentation: At the end of the semester each student will make a class presentation on their in field experience and the material included in their project report. The presentation can also include your reflections on student learning throughout the class.
Student portfolio: This is a professional report capturing your work in this class and can be used for future job interviews to showcase your knowledge and organizational, creative and written skills. The portfolio must contain:
(1) A weekly log of your activities (your fieldwork journal blog)
(2) A written evaluation essay providing self-assessment of how effectively you met the learning objectives of the course
The portfolio can also include photographs of your activities, products developed by you (community handouts, community report, web postings made by you about topics related to the class, class assignments etc.). You can use your graded assignments (or improvements of them) and any other material submitted during the semester as a part of your portfolio. You can also link your portfolio to online websites that you develop as a part of this class if you wish.

General questions about A1c’s. It is my understanding that the A1c’s are a good "window" into a 2-3 month history of your BGL. My 10.1% reading just before christmas allowed my Dr. to estimate my BGL to be around 230 and a subsequent self test put me in the 245 mark.So with my FBGL going down quite well I am curious how long does it take a reading today to factor in my A1c’s.
