  • Miley Cyrus Explains Tattoo: “It Reminds Me Not To Take Things For Granted…”

Miley Cyrus is speaking out in the name of body art. The Hannah Montana star, who turned 17 in November, had the words “Just Breathe” etched below her heart in her mother’s handwriting last year. The first snaps of the ink sparked debate between fans of the starlet and their parents, particularly since several U.S. states forbid those under the age of 18 from getting inked.

For her part, Miles insists she didn’t get the tattoo on a whim; it’s a tribute to a dear friend who died of cystic fibrosis in 2007, and her grandfathers who both succumbed to lung cancer, says the star. The once clean-cut and often controversial singer/actress hardly felt the pain of the needle as she had her first tattoo inked because she was concentrating on the people who inspired it in the first place.

“It really doesn’t hurt if you’re thinking about the meaning. I could never get a meaningless tattoo, but I think that if you’re doing something that’s important, that’s significant in your life, it takes some of the pain away,” she tells the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “It reminds me not to take things for granted. I mean breathing – that was something none of them could do, the most basic thing. And I put it near my heart, because that is where they will always be.”

  • Hanoi to be fastest growing city in the world (from 2008 – 2025)

Pricewaterhouse: Hanoi, HCMC to lead world GDP growth

    source: Dynasty Investmen

    Quote:

Vietnam’s two major economic hubs, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, will lead the global list of fastest growing GDP in 2008-2025, according to a recent study by the U.K.’s PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

PwC, the British industry-focused assurance, tax and advisory service provider’s economists authored the report, The Saigon Times Daily reported.

It ranked GDP growth by taking into account the impacts of the current economic downturn on cities worldwide

Hanoi and HCMC were ranked in the top spots on the list of the top 30 fastest growing cities in terms of economic growth, with an average real GDP growth rate of seven percent during 2008 to 2025.

China’s Changchun and Guangzhou took the third and fourth places, with average GDP growth of 6.9 and 6.8 percent, consecutively.

They are among the nine Chinese cities on the list along with 12 Indian cities. No city from a developed economy was listed.

“We expect the largest emerging market cities such as Hanoi and HCMC to grow at a faster rate than the cities in advanced economies, leading to cumulative growth of up to almost 200 percent for the period under investigation 2008-2025,” Ian S. Lydall, general director of PwC Vietnam, said.

“This is a contrast to advanced economy cities whose cumulative growth will be only around 35 percent,” he said.

Lydall said the mega-cities of the major developed economies continued to lead the global GDP rankings at the time being but things would change for the emerging cities.

“Only seven emerging economy cities are currently in the top 30 but our illustrative projections suggest that they will all move up the GDP rankings by 2025 and join the top 30.”

According to PwC, Hanoi and HCMC will be “two of the notable ‘climbers’ on the 2025 list.

The company forecast the southern hub would make a leap from the 95th position in 2008 to 64th in 2025 and its northern counterpart, Hanoi, would jump to the 82nd position from 116th in last year.

The largest five urban economies in 2025 will remain the same as in 2008 although London would overtake Chicago to move into the 4th place, according to PwC.

The largest ‘climbers’ within the top 30 are China’s Shanghai which is forecast to move up 16 spots from last year to rank 9th in 2025 and India’s Mumbai from the 29th of last year to 11th in 2025.

PricewaterhouseCoopers is one of the world’s largest professional services firms with a network of 163,000 staff in 151 countries worldwide.

  • ADP: 84,000 Jobs Whacked In December, Worse Than Expected

    employment-line

The private employment sector lost 84,000 jobs for December.

The Street was expecting a number around 75k, so while it’s not good news, the spread is at least tight.

    Below, the release in full:

ADP:  According to today’s ADP National Employment Report®, private sector employment decreased by 84,000 in December. The ADP National Employment Report, created by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®), in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, is derived from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.

Nonfarm Private Employment Highlights — December Report:
     — Total employment:             -84,000
     — Small businesses*             -25,000
     — Medium businesses**           -25,000
     — Large businesses***           -34,000
     — Goods-producing sector:       -96,000
     — Service-providing sector:     +12,000
    Addendum:
     — Manufacturing industry:       -43,000
    * Small businesses represent payrolls with 1-49 employees
** Medium businesses represent payrolls with 50-499 employees
*** Large businesses represent payrolls with more than 499 employees

According to Joel Prakken, Chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, “Nonfarm private employment decreased 84,000 from November to December 2009 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the ADP National Employment Report. The December employment decline was the smallest since March of 2008. Employment losses are now rapidly diminishing and, if recent trends continue, private employment will begin rising within the next few months.”

Prakken added, “December’s ADP Report estimates nonfarm private employment in the service-providing sector increased by 12,000, the largest increase since January of 2008. However, this employment growth was not enough to offset continued losses in the goods-producing sector. Employment in the goods-producing sector declined 96,000, with employment in the manufacturing sector dropping 43,000.”

“Large businesses, defined as those with 500 or more workers, saw employment decline by 34,000, while medium-size businesses with between 50 and 499 workers declined 25,000. Employment among small-size businesses, defined as those with fewer than 50 workers, declined 25,000,” said Prakken.

Prakken went on to say, “In December, construction employment dropped 52,000. This was its thirty-fifth consecutive monthly decline, and brings the total decline in construction jobs since the peak in January 2007 to 1,777,000. Employment in the financial services sector dropped 12,000.”

The matched sample used to develop the ADP National Employment Report was derived from ADP data, which during the twelve month period through December 2009, averaged over 360,000 U.S. business clients and represented over 22 million U.S. employees. This approximately represents the size of the matched sample used this month.

Small Business Highlights — December Report:

Due to the important contribution small businesses make to economic growth, employment data that is specific to businesses with fewer than 50 employees will be reported in the ADP Small Business Report® each month. The ADP Small Business Report is a subset of the ADP National Employment Report.

    —  Total small business employment: -25,000
    —  Goods-producing sector: -36,000 small business jobs
    —  Service-providing sector: +11,000 small business jobs

Private employment among small businesses decreased by 25,000 in December, according to the ADP Small Business Report released today. Additional information about small business employment, including charts on monthly job growth and employment levels, along with historical data, is available at http://www.smallbusinessreport.adp.com.

“Employment among small-size businesses, defined as those with fewer than 50 workers, declined 25,000 in December. However, small business employment within the service-providing sector increased by 11,000 during December. If recent trends continue, private employment will begin rising within the next few months,” said Joel Prakken.

Each year, Sea Shepherd sends ships to Antarctica to try to stop the Japanese fleet killing whales under the guise of scientific research. The clash took place near Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica.

Paul Watson, who founded the organisation and is captain of the ship Steve Irwin, said: ‘The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently. If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken.’

The Ady Gil was a new acquisition for Sea Shepherd in November last year. Previously named Earthrace, the US$1.5m catamaran holds the world record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe.

The Japanese fisheries agency said this was the fourth time this season that the activists had obstructed the whaler’s operations.
Obviously, there are a whole bunch of questions as how a boat as fast as the Ady Gil could be surprised — and not get the hell out of the way. But furthermore, the Japanese should be held accountable for ramming a much smaller vessel — and putting human lives in great danger in the process. This appears to have been a full-on collision — not some accidental sideswipe. They should be prepared for a great deal of international outrage with this one.
According to reports at abc.net.au, that was when Japanese whaling ship, Shonan Maru 2, just deliberately rammed into it. Spokesman Chris Aultman, who is a helicopter pilot for the group, says that no crew members were hurt in the incident but the boat is destroyed.

Lacky Maclean, who is the first mate of the Sea Shepherd’s ship, the Steve Irwin, said that the bow of Ady Gil was just cut off in the attack. A spokesman for Japan’s Fisheries Agency, which oversees Japan’s whaling program, says that it’s investigating the incident.

  • Lyon, le rêve américain

New York ou Los Angeles ? Lyon fait peau neuve en lorgnant outre-Atlantique.

    http://www.lepoint.fr/actualites-reg…/1556/0/329390

Finally, government officials are starting to wise up to the pending commercial real estate meltdown. Federal Reserve Governor Liz Duke says that CRE is a “key trouble spot” that must be addressed:

Bloomberg: “Losses from commercial real estate will be quite high by historic standards,” said Eugene Ludwig, former Comptroller of the Currency who is now chairman of Promontory Financial Group, a Washington-based consulting firm to financial institutions. “Hundreds of banks will fail or will be resolved over the course of the cycle.”

Federal Reserve Governor Elizabeth Duke said in a Jan. 4 speech that credit conditions in commercial real estate “are particularly strained.” Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo cited commercial real estate as one of the “key trouble spots” in congressional testimony in October after the Fed stepped up a review of banks’ exposure to such loans.

new-att-logo2It was only yesterday that we reported T-Mobile’s completion of their nationwide 7.2 Mbps HSPA network upgrade, and now, perhaps feeling a bit left out, AT&T has announced that it has completed a milestone on its way to 7.2 Mbps HSPA. AT&T finished an update to the software run by its 3.6 Mbps cellular towers that will allow them to push out more of those sweet, sweet Mbp’s “soon.” The next, and perhaps most important steps, are backhaul upgrades to the AT&T network so when your 7.2 Mbps capable cell phone asks for screaming fast data you get it. Said upgrades have already been completed in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami, and AT&T is beginning to flip the switch “on” in these areas.  The rest of us are going to have to wait, as the backhaul upgrades are set to continue through 2011.

Last we heard anything about ezGear’s You Rock Guitar it was on track for a launch in “either Q2 or Q3″ (of 2009) and would supposedly pack a price tag in the neighborhood of $150. Well, it seems that another year and another CES can make quite the difference, as the company (now known as Inspired Instruments) is now promising that the not-a-toy guitar will launch in February of this year, and that it will sport a slightly higher price tag of $179.95. From the looks of things, however, that’s about all that’s changed with the guitar, which still packs the same USB connectivity, MIDI functionality, and iPod or MP3 player connectedness as before. The company is even going so far as to reuse its tried and true promotional video — see it after the break.

  • RIM’s BlackBerry Presenter makes mobile PowerPoint all too sexy

BlackBerry users tend to fancy themselves true road warriors — you know, the kinds of road warriors that live and die most days by a four-shot latte and a copy of Office. It’s exactly for these types of folks that RIM seems to have designed the new BlackBerry Presenter, a slick little module measuring 86 x 60 x 23mm that connects to your compatible handset wirelessly and lets you beam up a PowerPoint preso via VGA or S-Video connection. As you mesmerize your crowd with the 24 supported animations and 55 transition styles, you can read your notes right from the comfort of your BlackBerry’s display, controlling the whole show without a single laptop in sight. The Presenter hits this month online for $199 and follows up in stores in February, and if you’re interested, you can start things off by upgrading from your Pearl 8200 or Curve 8300 — those puppies won’t be supported.
