  • Sony Updates Blu-ray Players With Monolithic Design

Aside from the introduction of a Blu-ray 3D player, Sony also is refreshing their regular Blu-ray player line with the introduction of the BDP-S570 (pictured above) and BDP-S370. Available this spring, both Blu-ray players feature full HD 1080p and can play Blu-ray disc, DVD, SA-CD, and CD’s. Both models have also been graced with Sony’s Monolithic Design concept, which is predominately black and the front face of the unit with a 6 degree slant will match several BRAVIA TV’s released this year quite nicely. I think these are the most attractive Sony Blu-ray players to date as I’m keen on concealed touch sensors, and the combination of both glossy and matte finishes that will make it easy to blend this into any decor. Both devices have access to Bravia Internet Video, which means this Blu-ray player gives you access to content from Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora, NPR, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and more than 25 total content providers.

We noticed an exciting new feature this year – the remote is bluetooth, and Sony will offer a free Blu-ray remote control application for iPhone and iPod Touch devices on the App Store. Sweet! We believe it does have an IR port for those of you who have existing remotes, however.

DVD owners will enjoy a higher quality experience to 1080p with Precision Cinema HD Upscaling. You’ll have the best possible sound from any disc with integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding, too. We also see mention of a Entertainment Database Browser with Gracenote technology and Photo/Music/Video Playback via USB and DLNA.

There are several differences between the S570 and S370 (pictured above), which largely revolves around the fact that the S570 has built-in Wi-Fi and the S370 is Wi-Fi ready, meaning you will need to purchase a USB wireless LAN adapter separately. The S570 also has the thoughtful IP Content Noise Reduction feature, which ensures your streaming online video will appear in the best quality possible.

  • Sony’s First Dedicated Blu-ray 3D Player – BDP-S770

It wasn’t much of a surprise to several of the press at CES 2010 that Sony also announced a Blu-ray 3D player, the BDP-S770, to compliment the large number of incoming 3D compatible BRAVIA TV’s. It is of course compatible with regular Blu-ray discs, as well as DVD’s, SA-CD’s, and regular CDs. Sony finally evolved past the akward ethernet-only Blu-ray players it offered in the past with the addition of built in Wi-Fi, making it easy to connect to your wireless network at home. Another new feature is the addition of a Bluetooth remote, and also the ability to control the S770 with a free iPhone/iPod touch remote control application. How awesome! However, we hope it has an IR reciever to ensure compatibility with standard multi-function remote controls.

As you can see, Sony has also made this different than any other Blu-ray player its released in the past with its Monolithic Design styling.

With access to Bravia Internet Video, this Blu-ray player gives you access to content from Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora, NPR, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, and more than 25 total content providers. Sony has also integrated IP Content Noise Reduction into the S770, which ensures that you are looking at the best quality image from whatever source your streaming.

DVD owners will enjoy a higher quality experience to 1080p with Precision Cinema HD Upscaling. You’ll have the best possible sound from any disc with integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding, too.

We feel the S770 will compliment the horde of 3D TV’s coming out quite nicely, and offers several other interesting features to differentiate it from the competition.

  • Top Four Hair Loss Information Myths

The internet is chock full of resources and information about hair loss and treatments. Unfortunately, it is also filled with misinformation and mythical beliefs. Before you decide on what to do about your balding condition, you should take not of top hair loss information myths.

Myth #1: Only men suffer from hair loss.

Many of us seem to think that only men suffer from the problem of hair loss. Recent hair loss information reveals however, that women are about just as likely to have the condition. The reason why we do not often hear about hair loss information for women is that the condition itself is not yet entirely socially acceptable. We seem to have this idea that a woman should always have full locks of hair.

One other reason why female hair loss is overlooked is because women do not obviously manifest hair loss as much as men do. Hair loss information and observation will reveal that a lot of men eventually end up with bald tops. Women however usually suffer only from diffuse thinning or hair loss. They don’t completely go bald unless their hair loss conditions are due to causes other than genes and hormones.

Myth #2: Hair on your brush is a sign of a hair loss condition.

Finding strands of hair on your brush or on your pillow in the morning might make you think that you already have a serious case of hair loss. Common hair loss information reveals though that it is normal to lose a few strands of hair daily.

It has been established that 80%-90% of a person’s hair is in the growing phase at any one time. The remaining percentage of hair is in the resting phase which will eventually lead to hair shedding. The hair that you find on your brush everyday may just be the strands that are scheduled to fall.

Myth #3: Hair products and styling can make you lose your hair.

Using too many products can definitely damage, dry or break your hair but they do not necessarily cause the kind of alarming hair loss that may lead to balding. Take note though that you should always check the product that you use on your hair. They should be approved for safe consumer use.

There is some hair loss information that says that some hairstyles like tight ponytails and corn rolls could lead to a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia. The tightly bound hair may eventually get pulled from the scalp. You can however immediately remedy this by refraining from tightly tying your hair.

Myth #4: Nothing can be done about hair loss.

According to recent hair loss information, there are two drugs that are FDA approved for hair loss treatment. Only one can be safely used by women. Surgical procedures have also been known to effectively remedy the problem of thinning hair or balding.

Aside from proven medical methods, there is also a lot of hair loss information related to supplementation. Many natural products containing herbal hormone blockers and nourishing vitamins and minerals also effectively address the problem of hair loss.

Timothy Geithner Meets Vladimir Lenin – John P. Hussman, Ph.D. –  … The Treasury’s action last week completes this circle. All without debate, and without the force of public will. … This policy is likely to lead to far more delinquencies. … What will be a game-changer is if Congress fails to recognize that the Treasury’s action is at minimum an evasion, and possibly a usurpation of powers that are enumerated to Congress alone. • Quick-Recovery Facelift in Los Angeles, CA

The wonders of medical science stride forward daily, and the improvements to procedures and outcomes continue to impress. Just when you get used to the idea that your facial skin Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon and muscles can be tightened for a more youthful appearance, they find a way to cut down the recovery time for your facelift. According to Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Doctor Francis Palmer, “when the proper facial aesthetics are followed, the incisions [and] the tissue dissection can be limited which in turn means there will be smaller scars, less bruising and swelling and a shorter recovery time. This is the idea behind the creation of our ‘Celebrity Lift™‘ that can make you look 10 years younger in less than 90 minutes with a recovery time that’s measured in hours, not weeks.” The trick, says Dr. Palmer, “is addressing the central portion of the face, the cheeks. The nasolabial folds are reduced and the cheeks are properly shaped using cheek implants or fillers like Radiesse or Perlane.”

Certainly a fast recovery to facelift surgery should appeal to socialites, celebrities, business persons; really, to anyone who wants to look younger and doesn’t have the luxury of spending a month or two out of sight to heal. Another benefit Dr. Palmer points out is that, given reduced tissue dissection, “smokers and those with a long history of smoking may still be a candidate for this powerful, yet minimal incision facelift and necklift.”

  • After 3 days with Penske, Saturn’s former boss heads up Smart USA

After just three days with the company, former Saturn executive Jill Lajdziak has been named president of Smart USA, in the wake of former president David Schembri’s relocation to another post with Smart distributor Penske Automotive.

“As we look to enhance the position of the Smart brand, Jill’s background and experience will help us reinvigorate the dealer network and bring a greater awareness to the smart brand,” said Roger Penske, chairman of the Penske Automotive.

Smart, which is made by Daimler AG and was launched in the U.S. in 2008, has seen sales fall 38% through the end of November, and Schembri has been at the helm since they entered the U.S. market.

  • 2010 Geneva Preview: 2011 Opel Meriva gets rear-hinged rear-doors

    2011 Opel Meriva

Opel today unveiled the new Meriva prior to its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. Totally redesigned for 2011, the new Opel Meriva features a significant amount of space engineered to be packed in a compact and contemporary design.

The 2011 Opel Meriva features FlexSpace rear-seating, high seating position and roomy cabin. It also gets a “coolness factor” with new FlexDoors, which are rear-hinged rear doors.

Engine choices range from standard gasoline to turbocharged engines with output ranging from 75 to 140-hp. Opel says that an ecoFLEX version will also be offered. Transmission choices will include a 5 and 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Follow the jump for the press release.

    Press Release:

New Opel Meriva: The Flexibility Champion

    – Innovation: A multitude of unique features extends leadership in flexibility
    – Coolness follows function: Rear-hinged FlexDoors improve cabin access
    – Debut: World premiere in Geneva, March 4

Rüsselsheim. Innovative, versatile and elegant: The second generation Opel Meriva, to premiere March 4 at the Geneva Motor Show, will set the new standard for automotive versatility with a multitude of innovative features engineered to optimize the flexible use of space. And it is all packed in a distinctive, contemporary design.

After pioneering automobile on-board versatility with the compact seven-seater Zafira in 1999, Opel created a new market segment for small, affordable monocabs when it launched the first generation Meriva in 2003. With its revolutionary FlexSpace rear-seating concept, high seating position and roomy cabin, the Meriva was big on flexibility yet small in size. This popular formula has enabled it to consistently lead the small monocab segment, with sales in Europe totaling more than 1 million units.

Now, the second generation Meriva again raises the bar for affordable, on-board flexibility. Its FlexSpace system has been further developed to become even more intuitive and easier to use. It also introduces FlexDoors, innovative rear-hinged rear doors that facilitate access to its cabin – a premiere for a volume manufacturer. Moreover, the new Meriva features great interior storage space enhanced by a revolutionary concept of flexible center console, as well as the Opel-exclusive FlexFix system – the integrated rear bicycle carrier that is stored like a drawer under the luggage compartment.

The Meriva’s flexibility trademark is enhanced by expressive exterior and interior styling that carries forward Opel’s award-winning new sculptural design language. Its monocab silhouette is fluid, elegant and dynamic. The rear window graphic features a distinctive wave accentuating the rear-hinged FlexDoors, improving the view for rear seated passengers, particularly children.

The new reference in on-board versatility

“With the Zafira Flex 7 and the Meriva’s FlexSpace seating concepts, we invented a new kind of fully integrated, on-board flexibility,” says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Opel/Vauxhall. “With the new Meriva, we wanted to engineer the new versatility champion in the automotive industry. I don’t see any other car offering so many ideas that make one’s life easier.”

Increased flexibility is extended to all areas in the new Meriva. In the cabin, the innovative FlexSpace rear seating system introduced in the first Meriva has been further developed: It requires even less effort to move the seats in their different positions or to fold them down.

Throughout the cabin, storage space is considerably increased with convenient locations provided for items commonly carried inside a car. The revolutionary FlexRail console system consisting of exchangeable storage units that can slide on rails located between the front seats provides convenient and adaptable storage for any kind of use.

Up front, the generously proportioned seats are similar to those of the new Astra and Insignia. They offer a class-leading range of adjustment – 240 mm forwards/backwards and 65 mm in height – allowing people of all size and age to find optimal comfort for their journeys. Also new for Meriva is the availability of Opel’s unique FlexFix integrated rear bicycle carrier.

Entering into a new era of doors

Meriva opens up a new dimension in rear seat access with unique rear-hinged rear doors. The FlexDoors concept is a first from a volume manufacturer in the industry. Unlike the few well-known rear-hinged doors systems available, FlexDoors features full-sized doors which open independently without the need for a clamshell overlap by the front doors. A conventional B-pillar makes this independent opening possible, while ensuring good body rigidity and side impact protection. In addition, it has a handle that further facilitates entry and exit.

FlexDoors provide great functionality by making it easy to get into and out of the rear seat. Locating the door hinges on the C-pillar also allows more clearance for passengers’ feet to swing past the B-pillar flange. The FlexDoors also open up to 84 degrees, much wider than conventional doors, for which 68-70 degrees is the usual standard. Front passengers also benefit from the same 84 degrees opening angle. FlexDoors are also more ergonomic and convenient for the front passengers to open FlexDoors when stowing a jacket, a briefcase or an umbrella behind the front seat.

FlexDoors also provide greater safety, especially for young families. Parents can reach into the rear seat more easily to help with buckling up, and children can be more safely guided when getting in and out of the vehicle. For example, when both the front and rear doors are open at the same time, a safety zone is created as both child and parent can get out of the car without a door separating them, reducing the risk of children stepping out into traffic.

FlexDoors add style to increased functionality. Stepping in and out of the vehicle not only feels much more natural, it looks cool and elegant. It’s no longer necessary to twist or slide out of the rear seat.

The FlexDoors concept has been successfully market tested and evaluated with Meriva customers since 2006. It s supported by an array of patented locking systems designed to optimize safety.

Monocab expression of new Opel design

Inside and out, the Meriva moves forward Opel’s new, expressive design language – sculptural artistry meets German precision – and adheres to the same focus on quality already seen on Insignia and the new Astra.

Opel designers created a dynamic and elegant monocab. A lower, sweeping roof-line combined with Opel’s signature blade side-body motif and the wave rear window line give the Meriva a fresh, distinctive character and look.

The FlexDoors invite you to an interior landscape of harmoniously flowing lines and surfaces. The wraparound wing shaped instrument panel enhances the feeling of width and roominess. The forward leaning center stack contributes to this and adds a notion of sportiness and sculpture.

The interior is appointed with six different levels of colour and trim. The widest choice ever offered on an Opel. The high standard of fit and finish of the chosen textures and materials as well as the layout and decoration of the controls is typical of more expensive cars.

Meriva to launch with six environmentally friendly engines

The new Meriva benefits from a longer wheelbase, wider front and rear tracks, all contributing to improved handling and greater ride comfort.

The range of powertrains features economical and efficient turbocharged engines offering a power bandwidth from 75 to 140 hp. A particularly economical ecoFLEX version will also be offered. The Meriva will offer a choice of 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions as well as a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Designed and developed at Opel’s engineering center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new Meriva will be built in Zaragoza, Spain and is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

  • Banging On The Bankers

A lot of the resistance I’ve gotten for saying that people ought to pay their debts comes from people angrily declaring that after all, the banks are vicious predators.  In some cases this is true . . . certainly, in the case of Tom Vellucci, which I debated with Felix Salmon last week, the servicer seems to have offered him an unsustainable modification in the hopes of squeezing the last drop of savings from a dying man.

But I don’t think this is an adequate argument.  Steve Waldmann, for example, seems to view walking away from your mortgage as a sort of game theory move, a just retribution in our society-wide game of tit-for-tat with banks that aren’t behaving like good people.  I sense that he is not alone.

But this is awfully naive game theory.  A simple tit-for-tat strategy assumes a simple world in which there are only a few possible actions, all of which send clear signals.  What signal does walking away from your mortgage send?  Maybe it says, “People are mad at banks and they shouldn’t charge such rapacious fees.”  On the other hand, maybe it says, “People have stopped feeling any responsibility to pay their debts, so you should make it harder to get a mortgage, and more punitive to walk away from one.”

The other problem with this notion is that tit-for-tat, and indeed every related strategy, requires that you can target the punishment at the bad actors.  But in many of the cases we’re disputing, there’s no evidence that the banks or investors who are getting shafted are the same banks or investors that are shafting others.  It’s like ripping off Korean grocers because a waiter at a sushi place once overcharged you.

If we think bankers are, say, being abusive with their overdraft fees, we have better ways to fix it than turning into a nation of deadbeats.  We could, umm, regulate their overdraft fees.  Or we could publicize the banks that charge outrageous fees, and try to do business only with the ones that pay better.  If banks made stupid loans, they’ll suffer by losing money.  But I find it hard to say that anyone is entitled to voluntarily default just to punish a bank for . . . being stupid enough to lend you money.  I mean, it’s sort of elegantly self-referential, but one cannot do it without indicting oneself right along with the bank.

Of course, there’s quite a bit of populist anger at the feeling that bankers haven’t suffered–that they’ve just gone right along making money.  This is not actually true; many bankers have lost their jobs, and the job losses were heaviest in the sectors that performed worst.  RMBS is not exactly a hot line of business right now.

But of course, many other bankers are still minting it hand over fist, which especially rankles because we, the taxpayers, are the only reason that they’re not pricing refrigerator cartons and prime real estate under bridges.  It’s one thing to pump money into the banks, if that’s the only thing standing between us and the Great Depression, but no one wants to pump it into the bankers’ pockets.

But still, the answer is not to gratuitously walk away from mortgages.  Much of that paper isn’t held by banks, but by pension funds and similar institutions that did nothing to anyone.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure what the answer is.  As long as banks are both extremely profitable, and competing for talent, they’ll continue to pay huge salaries.  There is no direct way to intervene without gross violations of our legal system, or severely impairing the few banks we do have control over–banks who, let us remember, still owe us a great deal of money. A few months ago, I asked why banker salaries are so high, and ultimately I ended up with the fact that they’re so high because so few people can make so much money.  When that’s the case, no one wants to risk getting a “deal” on second best–which is why managers pay a lot to the firms that do their IPOs, and those firms pay so much to the bankers.

But that doesn’t really answer the question of why, over the last thirty years, it became possible to make so much money in the financial sector–or why that sector became so grossly bloated.  Some of that activity was just regulatory arbitrage that added no value to society, like the leasing deals that allowed municipalities to transfer depreciation to taxable entities able to take advantage of it.  Much more of it was . . . well, I don’t want to definitively say that it had no value, but I’d like to hear the authors of much of this activity explain to me what value, exactly, it added to society.

My libertarian readers are no doubt writhing, but the fact is, financial activity takes place in a web of law, and during periods of financial innovation, that law is often inadequate.  We’ve had a couple centuries to work out the kinks in stocks.  We’ve had thirty years of experimentation with mortgage-backed securities, and at the very least, they clearly need some work.

I don’t think it’s particularly left wing to say that our financial sector clearly became too large and well-remunerated–particularly when we note that at least some of that was due to our increasingly sclerotic taxation and regulation schemes in the rest of the economy.  But I’m not sure what to do about it.  It sounds fun to take a wrench, wade into the shadow banking system, and start banging heads.  But that’s tricky to do without imposing great costs in terms of both liberty, and economic activity.

Or like I said earlier:  a system in which people just walk away from their mortgages is not a system in which the little guy prospers.  It’s a system in which the little guy can’t get a mortgage.  Our current combination of laws and social sanction does a remarkably good job of combining access to credit, with relief for those who need it.  There are many potential equilibria in this game scenario which are much worse than the current one.

Waldmann, and I think Salmon, view the tightening of credit as a feature rather than a bug, of course–they’d like to return to the days of paternalistic credit markets.  But I’d like to suggest first, that fifties economic nostalgia is highly overdone, and extremely colored by the fact that the narrators of that economic history were overwhelmingly the children of the relatively educated, affluent, and successful.  And also, that the price of tighter credit and more punitive default terms will fall hardest on those who really, really can’t afford to pay it.  Damon Runyon didn’t just make up the crowded living conditions, the loan sharks, the reliance on pawnbrokers.  Those are relics of that golden bygone era when bankers didn’t extend credit to people without solid incomes, substantial assets, or affluent relations.  Fewer people got themselves into trouble with a bank, it is true.  But there are a lot of worse ways to get into trouble.  And as with the War on Drugs, I’m pretty strongly averse to more paternalistic policies which improve the lives of the middle class while making poorer people worse off.

  • Google’s Web Store Is Today’s Mobile Disruption

First off, forget the phone. The big news out of Google today wasn’t the shiny new Nexus One, but the web store that the company created as a way to get a certain class of Android devices it calls superphones into consumer’s hands and regain some control over its open-source OS. That’s right, the phone may be sweet, but the business disruption today came from the channel.

With its web store Google is trying to create a top tier of Android devices and a way for it to control the user experience for the operating system — currently a challenge for the OS, especially when it’s compared with the buttoned-down iPhone ecosystem. If Google sets the bar high enough for a phone to be listed in its web store, the consumer knows that handset meets a certain level of quality.

That will help deal with the complaints about apps not working correctly on the device because the Android platform is too advanced for older hardware, and other issues that are keeping Android gadgets behind the iPhone in the user experience category. Andy Rubin, VP of engineering at Google, today at an Android press event defended the difficulties with the older hardware, saying that backwards compatibility between the hardware and software for mobile phones would stall innovation.

He kept repeating that the Nexus One is like his laptop from four or five years ago, a machine that wouldn’t run today’s version of Windows, he pointed out. Maybe, but the initial Android phone was released only a year and three months ago.

Sanjay Jha, the co-CEO of Motorola, which is a Google partner building Android handsets, told me after the event that Motorola won’t focus solely on designing handsets for the high-end users that Google appears to be targeting with its web store, but will instead target a range of consumers with a variety of Android handsets. He stressed that Google’s Nexus One and the store itself are trying to serve a particular audience segment. But Motorola won’t abandon Android.

Jha wouldn’t answer questions on how revenue would be shared (if at all) between Motorola and Google for Motorola devices sold through the Google web platform. The Motorola Droid is listed as part of the Google web store, but consumers actually have to go to the Verizon web site in order to pick it up. Is this because Droid doesn’t make Google’s grade?  Rubin said that more operators and devices will be showcased on the store soon (including the upcoming Nexus One for the Verizon network coming in the spring).

Andy Rubin with Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha at Mobilize 09

However, Jha’s seeming nonchalance over questions about how Motorola felt about Google taking such an active role in designing hardware was belied by his late arrival at the event (he blamed traffic) and his rapid exit after the press Q&A ended. I saw HTC CEO Peter Chou answering questions for more than an hour, whereas Jha was gone 10 minutes after the questions ended.

My guess is the Google phone will be less disruptive to the carriers, but a real problem for the handset makers which are already seeing their profits erode. But if Google helps make the store into a place where consumers can make sure their Android device can run the apps they want to use, it will likely win.

  • Sony Re-Embraces Social Media Aficionados With Bloggie Camera/Camcorder

Last year’s Webbie line of camera/camcorder hybrid devices has been reborn as the “Bloggie,” which are new devices and change in focus for Sony in the low-budget, yet above average quality personal imaging device category. This is a product aimed towards people who want to not form over a ton of money, but have a fun, high quality option to enrich the whole “share my life” process people do on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media avenues. The new MHS-PM5 ($170) and MHS-CM5 ($200) include many of the same features and shooting options found in more expensive cameras — such as an integrated CMOS sensor and image stabilization, but is easy to use with the ability to easily upload content to popular video sharing websites. Both devices have the capability to capture 1920×1080/30p high-definition MPEG-4 video and shoot 5-megapixel photos all on a Memory Stick PRO Duo, Secure Digital (SD), or SDHC storage card. Built-in Face Detection makes the content creation process easier by recognizing and enhancing faces through automatic exposure correction.

Also, both devices feature a built-in USB arm for quick charging/data transfer and include Picture Motion Browser Portable software (Mac/PC compatible) which makes it easy to manage or upload content to video-sharing websites.

Features unique to the MHS-CM5 (pictured above) are slight in comparison to the PM5, but some may prefer the addition of HDMI output for viewing photos and high definition clips on your HDTV, and a 5x optical zoom lens on a “pistol-grip” body with large flip-out 2.5” LCD screen. Here’s another angle:

The PM5 has an 4x optical zoom lens on a vertical lightweight body that slips easily into a pocket or purse and SteadyShot image stabilization that ensures smoother footage. The screen is only slightly smaller at 2.4″ LCD, but can do full-screen playback in landscape format. The PM5 is also available in four stylish colors including dark purple, blue, pink, and white. We also see a listing for a PM5 bundle package, MHS-PM5K ($190), with an interesting lens that lets you capture 360-degree videos and includes a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo card. We have a shot of that device below:

We’ll have to test this lens out at CES!

  • Red Bluff Fish Passage Awarded Recovery Funds by Reclamation’s Mid-Pacific Region for Improvements

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    Date: Jan. 5, 2010
    Contact: Joan Moody, (202) 208-6416

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that the Bureau of Reclamation’s Mid-Pacific Region has awarded a $21 million contract under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for the Red Bluff Fish Passage Improvement Project. The work includes the construction of a bridge, siphon, and water conveyance channel to connect the headworks of the Tehama-Colusa and Corning Canals to a future fish screen and pumping plant. The complete facility is designed to improve fish passage through the existing Red Bluff Diversion Dam (Dam). The new diversion facility will be located on the Sacramento River about a mile upstream of the Dam and 2 miles southeast of Red Bluff, California.

With this ARRA award, Reclamation is initiating the first construction phase of the project. The award was issued to West Bay Builders, Inc., Novato, Calif. due to their competitive price offered to complete the contract work. The work consists of constructing an operation and maintenance bridge over Red Bank Creek to connect the existing operation and maintenance facility to the site of the new pumping plant and fish screen; constructing a siphon under Red Bank Creek; and constructing associated open channels to deliver water from the new pumping plant to the canal headworks stilling basin. Red Bank Creek is a tributary to the Sacramento River and joins the Sacramento River about a half of a mile upstream of the Dam.

The new pumping plant facility is designed with a capacity to deliver 2,500 cubic feet per second of water from the Sacramento River into the Tehama-Colusa and Corning Canals to irrigate 150,000 acres of high-valued crops in Tehama, Glenn, Colusa, and northern Yolo counties. The initial installed capacity of the pumping plant will be 2,000 cfs.

”The construction of a bridge and siphon to connect the existing canal headworks facilities and the new pumping plant is a significant step toward diverting water in a way that allows unimpeded passage for salmon and green sturgeon,” said Secretary Salazar. “The construction will provide employment and help alleviate a long-standing fish passage concern while still providing water necessary for crop production,” said the Secretary.

The ARRA funds are part of a stimulus package that is an important component of the President’s plan to jumpstart the economy, create and save jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so the Country can thrive in the 21st century. In development of the stimulus package, priority was given to funding relatively large projects which would create lasting value for the public. Funds from ARRA will allow Reclamation to make a significant contribution to the recovery and stabilization of the economy of the United States in a short time.

Secretary Salazar has pledged unprecedented levels of transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Department of the Interior’s economic recovery projects. The public will be able to follow the progress of each project on www.recovery.gov and on www.interior.gov/recovery. Secretary Salazar has appointed a Senior Advisor for Economic Recovery, Chris Henderson, and an Interior Economic Recovery Task Force. Henderson and the Task Force will work closely with the Department’s Inspector General to ensure that the recovery program is meeting the high standards for accountability, responsibility and transparency that President Obama has set.

Reclamation is the largest wholesale water supplier and the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the United States, with operations and facilities in the 17 Western States. Its facilities also provide substantial flood control, recreation, and fish and wildlife benefits. Visit Reclamation’s website at www.usbr.gov.

  • LaCie Updates LaCinema Mini HD, Network Server and USB Keys [LaCie]

A buncha new stuff from LaCie today, with the updated LaCinema Mini HD, Network Server and dinky-looking USB sticks.

That Mini HD supports 1080p video over 802.11n Wi-Fi, and has an HDMI output alongside an internal hard drive and USB port for whacking in one of those key-shaped sticks with some “special” movies, TV shows and photos. You know the sort. It supports DivX, AVC and MKV codecs. It’s compatible with PCs, Macs or NAS.

The Network Server is primarily for small businesses, running on Windows Home Server with five drives and gigabit Ethernet. Backup is done via LaCie’s brilliantly-named Wuala cloud-based service.

Those key-shaped USB sticks? Not much has changed since the last batch, but the CooKey and WhizKey models are made from metal with the gold SIP connectors being water and scratch-resistant. Available in anywhere up to 32GB of storage, owners will get an extra 4GB through the Wuala cloud-based storage. [LaCie]
