  • A young Angolan who has made it to Hollywood

    Perfil de Pedro Hossi
    Um angolano em Hollywood
    ACTOR DE TEATRO E CINEMA

    Quote:

Pedro Hossi foi o primeiro estrangeiro a receber o The Lee Strasberg Award of Merit.

    VIDA PESSOAL RESGUARDADA

  • What Are Your New Years Resolutions?

    02EE9285-8282-4ABB-8015-FD9B2A3098F9.jpg

With 2010 now upon us, it’s time to think about your new years resolutions. No matter how awesome you are (or think you are), there are ways we can all improve.

AskMen.com recently published their list of 10 New Year’s Resolutions All Men Should Make. While it’s probably overkill to make 10 resolutions for the upcoming year, here are a few we think are worthy of consideration:

Go to the doctor. Sure, us guys hate doctors and all the poking around that involves, but getting regular check-ups is crucial for your continued good health. Pick up that phone and make an appointment – it’s not as scary as you think it will be.

Start saving. It’s boring, but important to your financial well being. If you haven’t started already, 2010 can be the perfect time to put some money away on a regular basis. The more you save now, the longer you’ll have to make that nest egg grow into something substantial down the line.

Volunteer. Helping others in need is one of the best things a man can do. Whether it’s working in a soup kitchen or just helping your neighbor with a chore, giving of whatever time you might have available can help make you a little less self-absorbed. Plus, chicks dig it.

Regardless of whether you make specific resolutions for the next year or not, we can all try to be better men in 2010.

What are your resolutions for the new year? Share them in the comments.

  • Dicerna Snags Deal With Japan’s Kyowa Hakko Kirin to Develop RNAi Cancer Treatments

    dicerna
    Luke Timmerman wrote:

Dicerna Pharmaceuticals has found some deep pockets to support its approach to creating RNA interference drugs. The Watertown, MA-based company is announcing today that it has formed an alliance with Japan-based Kyowa Hakko Kirin.

Under the deal, Kyowa Hakko Kirin will get access to Dicerna’s proprietary RNAi drug technology against one undisclosed target on cancer cells. In exchange, Dicerna will get $4 million in upfront cash, plus $120 million in milestone payments for success in development and commercialization, as well as royalties on future product sales. The partnership can be broadened over time to include as many as 10 more drug targets for cancer and other diseases, each with the same financial terms. Dicerna also has an option to co-promote and equally split the profits in the U.S. on the initial cancer drug.

This is the first significant partnership for Dicerna, a company founded in 2007 on the idea that it had found a “second doorway” of RNA interference. Like Cambridge, MA-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and others, Dicerna is seeking to specifically silence disease-related genes. One key difference is that Dicerna’s drugs are a little longer than so-called small interfering RNA molecules, and they interact with an enzyme called dicer that’s involved at an earlier step in the RNAi process. Kyowa Hakko Kirin has a long history of manufacturing and marketing biotech drugs in Japan, and it has its own internal teams devoted to RNAi research and development.

“They looked carefully at different siRNA opportunities for some time, and they chose this one,” says Dicerna CEO Jim Jenson. “They are committed to biotech, and they are a strong player in Japan.”

Dicerna still has a lot to prove about its method, as none of its treatments are yet in clinical trials. The partnership does provide cash that will enable Dicerna to add a few new faces to its staff of 23 employees, Jenson says. It also helps provide outside validation that should enable the company to raise a Series B venture round in 2010, which he expects will be worth …Next Page »

  • Harleysville Group Inc. (HGIC) Dividend Stock Analysis

This article originally appeared on The DIV-Net December 28, 2009.

Linked here is a detailed quantitative analysis of Harleysville Group Inc. (HGIC). Below are some highlights from the above linked analysis:

Company Description: Harleysville Group Inc. is a regional holding company for property and casualty insurance companies that operates in 32 states, primarily in the eastern half of the U.S.

Fair Value: I consider four calculations of fair value, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

HGIC is trading at a discount to 1.), 3.) and 4.) above. The stock is trading at a 7.5% discount to its calculated fair value of $34.88. HGIC earned a Star in this section since it is trading at a fair value.

Dividend Analytical Data: In this section there are three possible Stars and three key metrics, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Free Cash Flow Payout
    2. Debt To Total Capital
    3. Key Metrics
    4. Dividend Growth Rate
    5. Years of Div. Growth
    6. Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15%

HGIC earned two Stars in this section for 2.) and 3.) above. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. HGIC earned a Star for having an acceptable score in at least two of the four Key Metrics measured. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1986 and has increased its dividend payments for 22 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA)? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

HGIC earned a Star in this section for its NPV MMA Diff. of the $2,081. This amount is in excess of the $1,300 target I look for in a stock that has increased dividends as long as HGIC has. The stock’s current yield of 3.87% exceeds the 3.72% estimated 20-year average MMA rate.

Other: HGIC is a member of the Broad Dividend Achievers™ Index.

Conclusion: HGIC earned one Star in the Fair Value section, earned two Stars in the Dividend Analytical Data section and earned one Star in the Dividend Income vs. MMA section for a total of four Stars. This quantitatively ranks HGIC as a 4 Star-Buy.

Using my D4L-PreScreen.xls model, I determined the share price would need to increase to $38.49 before HGIC’s NPV MMA Differential decreased to the $1,300 minimum that I look for in a stock with 22 years of consecutive dividend increases. At that price the stock would yield 3.25%.

Resetting the D4L-PreScreen.xls model and solving for the dividend growth rate needed to generate the target $1,300 NPV MMA Differential, the calculated rate is 6.7%. This dividend growth rate is less than the 8.4% used in this analysis, thus providing a margin of safety. HGIC has a risk rating of 1.25 which classifies it as a low risk stock.

HGIC underwrites property and casualty insurance policies and offers commercial automobile, workers’ compensation, and multiperil insurance, as well as personal automobile and homeowner’s insurance. The company markets its policies through almost 2,000 insurance agencies, and maintains offices in about a dozen states. On October 27, 2009, HGIC agreed to assume Delta’s book of Delta Lloyds Flood Insurance Business effective November 1, 2009. This is a company that I have watched for some time. It has very little debt and its free cash flow payout is relatively low. HGIC is attractively trading below my buy price of $34.88. It is a stock I will give strong consideration to in the future as my asset allocation allows. For additional information, including the stock’s dividend history, please refer to its data page.

Disclaimer: Material presented here is for informational purposes only. The above quantitative stock analysis, including the Star rating, is mechanically calculated and is based on historical information. The analysis assumes the stock will perform in the future as it has in the past. This is generally never true. Before buying or selling any stock you should do your own research and reach your own conclusion. See my Disclaimer for more information.

Full Disclosure: At the time of this writing, I held no position in HGIC (0.0% of my Income Portfolio). What are your thoughts on HGIC?

  • The One Chart That Says Everything* About Our Healthcare Problem

Over at FiveThirtyEight.com Andrew Gelman posts this chart chart plotting per-capital healthcare expenditure against standard of living.

    healthcare

It seems to show, without a doubt, that those awesome Western Europeans and East Asians get way more bang for their buck than we do.

Except… it doesn’t tell us anything about how well the European system would work if the people there lived the unhealthy lifestyle of so many Americans. And it doesn’t say anything about how the outcomes of individuals with specific ailments (like cancer). And it doesn’t take into account the greater diversity of our population.

But other than that, it’s pretty damning.

  • Paid App Catalog expanding to Europe in March

    Paid Euro App Catalog

Well, it’s one more thing to check off the list of things about which to complain: we now know when paid webOS apps will be available outside the United States. In March 2010, folks in Europe will finally be able to buy webOS apps from Palm’s App Catalog. Here’s what Palm’s Developer Network Blog had to say about the whole thing:

“The general app catalog model is not new, but what we’re doing with it is. The Palm developer program extends the unique web orientation of the Palm webOS platform, providing developers innovative opportunities to leverage the web as a promotional channel for applications. We offer greater freedom and choice of how to get your applications to market and unparalleled control to promote and grow your business. For developers looking to make money, it’s all about speed, promotion, and reacting to customer feedback. Our platform gives you greater access to customers and faster cycle times to make higher-quality, compelling applications.”

Developers interested in participating in the European ecommerce program are encouraged to sign up now; details are available on the PDN Blog. As to when the paid App Catalog will be available in places like Canada and Mexico, we currently have no info on this, but our assumption is that the App Catalog will go fully international concurrently with the European expansion, or in a phased deployment around the same time.

Thanks to everybody that sent this in!

National Thermal Power Corporation to invest 30 billion rupees to reach 301 megawatts of capacity

Out of 301 MW target, 190 MW is planned to be sourced through solar thermal technology while the remaining 111
MW will come from solar photovoltaic sources.

State-owned National Thermal Power Corporation, India’s largest power generator, plans to invest around 30 billion rupees ($643.3 million) to reach 301 megawatts of generation capacity by March 2014 through solar power, reported online business magazine domain-b.com.

Of the 301-MW target, 190 MW is planned to be sourced through solar thermal technology while the remaining 111 MW will come from solar photovoltaic sources.

The Indian government has an ambitious goal to generate 1,300 MW of solar power by 2013 and 5,000 MW by 2022.

The state-run company has already taken up a 15-MW solar project at Anta in Rajasthan. The power generated from this station will be fed into the grid.

National Thermal Power Corporation currently largely depends on coal-fired power plants for the bulk of its installed capacity of over 30,000 MW.

    http://www.lavieeco.com/economie/154…te-publie.html

  • Michael Pettis: China Has No Idea How Vulnerable It Is To A Trade War

    obamajintaochina.jpg

A trade war is one of those calamities that people always see lurking right around the corner.

No doubt it’s going to be one of the big fears for 2010 (just as it was in 2009, 2008, 2007, etc.) It’s kind of like wild inflation in that respect.

Generally though, the world continues to move towards freer trade, despite little skirmishes that never amount to a full-blown war.

But with China rushing headlong into recovery, and with the Western world faltering, there’s a new case to be made for the outbreak of protectionism.

Michael Pettis, a Peking University professor and author of the excellent China Financial Markets blog, sees it coming this year, and believes China is totally unprepared for what’s about to come.

I am no expert on the subject of criminal law or the environment, and so have little to add beyond all that has already been said, but the huge amount of angry criticism China has received on the very visible subjects of the Copenhagen meeting and the execution of a British subject caught smuggling drugs will make it easier for tariffs and restrictions aimed at China to generate popular approval in Europe, North America and the developing world, especially since protectionists can easily add a “moral dimension” to their arguments.

I am not sure Chinese policymakers fully understand how vulnerable China is to trade war.  This is perhaps because the “success” of the stimulus package has convinced them that they are less vulnerable to external demand than they originally thought.  But this would be a serious misreading.  The stimulus package has postponed the effect of declining net foreign demand on Chinese unemployment, but has actually increased its vulnerability by increasing the future gap between what China produces and what it consumes.  China needs foreign demand to keep absorbing its excess capacity for several more years while it engineers the difficult transition to domestic consumption-led growth, but I don’t see either China taking the necessary steps to force the transition or foreigners looking very eager to help China through the process.

This sabotage of Copenhagen as a crucial turning point is an interesting one. The conclusion some are coming to is that the summit — regardless of how symbolic it was — represents China’s willingness to take big-time international criticism, whereas previously they had a reputation for always seeking to save face.

If public criticism no longer means very much to the Chinese government, then harsher measures, like various protectionism measures, will have to do.

  • Tiger Woods Gives Wife Elin $300 Million Cash Christmas Gift

Shamed golfing ace Tiger Woods reportedly gifted his estranged wife with a $300 million cash incentive this holiday season.

The world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, who has withdrawn from professional golf after being linked to more than a dozen mistresses, has restored to cash bonuses to keep his fractured family together and is said to have given half of his fortune to the mother of his two children in hopes of convincing her not to dissolve their nearly six year marriage.

“She’s 100 percent determined to split with Tiger. When she boasted of the ‘$300m Christmas gift’ and then laughed it was clear to everyone around her that she’’s more focused than ever about moving on with her life,” News of the World quoted a source as saying.

“She still has feelings for Tiger as the father of her kids, but now her only dealings with him will be to get her and the youngsters set up in a comfortable home with everything they need. And so far Tiger has just agreed to settle for an easy life,” the source added.

Those rumors seem to contradict, Elin’s recent public behavior. The Swedish beauty was photographed wearing her wedding rings for the first time in weeks as she spent the New Year’s Eve weekend skiing and celebrating her 30th birthday.

  • When a coach may help

Carol Kauffman has a question for you: If your life could look the way you’d really like it to look, what would that be?

Depending on your answer, she’ll help you build on your strengths so you can pull yourself toward your goals, step by small step. She’ll also hold you accountable.

Although Kauffman is a psychologist, this is coaching, not therapy. Codirector of the new Institute of Coaching at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, she is working to solidify the growing body of evidence-based research supporting the relatively new field that is often defined by what it is not…

  • Depot Angel: Japanese company sells pre-fabricated basements (video)

    depot_angel

About a year ago, I blogged about Yamaha’s portable room that you could set up in bigger rooms to have your well-deserved quiet time. And now another Japanese company called Tamada brings us something similar: The Depot Angel [JP] (what a name), a pre-fabricated basement that can be, again, used to enjoy some alone time, as a storage room or as anything you’d like it to be.

The main idea is to create additional space for Japanese households at relatively affordable prices. Seeing that real estate in Japan is (generally speaking) pretty expensive, it might make sense for some families in this country to get one Depot Angel and bury it under their house.

    depot_angel_2

The female buyer you can see in the (Japanese) video below says her “artificial” basement is ideal for storing rice and vegetables as the room is relatively warm in winter and cool in summer. Tamada got the inspiration for the basements from those underground tanks gas stations use.

A Depot Angel that offers between 4.6 and 6.1sqm of space costs $21,000, whereas the top model (23sqm) has a price tag of $107,000. Buyers can choose between four different models, which range from 770 kg to over a ton in weight.

    Here’s a video (in Japanese):

“There are a lot of barriers to medical care to children with autism,’’ said the report’s lead author, Dr. Timothy Buie of Harvard Medical School. “They can be destructive and unruly in the office, or they can’t sit still. • Dennis Convinced Spy-Gate Truth Will Come Out

McLaren’s former F1 principal Ron Dennis decided to set the record straight regarding his decision to leave the sport at the end of the 2008 season in an interview with Esquire magazine. Needless to say, Dennis spoke about the famous spy-gate in which he and the McLaren team were found guilty by the FIA for spying on their rivals Ferrari and consequently handed the biggest fine in the history of the sport.

Dennis insisted that the truth behind the spy-gate is yet to come out, and … (read more)

  • Milestone multitouch browser ported to the Droid by a user-made patch (video)

This little nugget of software is itself still in beta, but if you can’t wait for the full Milestone firmware port to climb out of alpha development, it’s a good alternate route to getting your Droid dancing in the “pinch to zoom” party. Once again produced by the good folks over at AllDroid, the patch substitutes the Droid’s default browser with the Milestone’s multitouch capable one — and from the feedback we’re seeing it does so very cleanly and painlessly, whether you’re running Android 2.0.1 or 2.1. You’ll still need to root your device first, and some background reading is advisable before jumping in, but then you should be clear for take-off into the world of multitouch browsing. Video evidence after the break.

    [Thanks, Steve]
