  • Lebanon-Israel Peace Treaty

Probably I am very naif but I do believe that both countries could benefit from a peace treaty which would secure Lebanon security and integrity as well as boosting tourism greatly.
After all, Beirut and Tel Aviv are the go-go places for an international tourism looking for nighlife, beach, culture with a touch of "exotism".

My question is, what would be the demands both governments should treat in order to make peace?* What do you as Lebanese citizens think and feel?

*I mean only Lebanon and Israel, and advocate for looking at the future instead of the past (2006 confrontation in Southern Lebanon).

In case somebody feels offended about the question, I am sorry, but I am interested in hearing the opinions of the Lebanese people.

  • Martin Feldstein: Congress Blew The Stimulus, Beware A Double-Dip In 2010

    martin feldstein

Harvard economist Martin Feldstein has made some negative comments at the American Economic Association’s annual meeting in Atlanta, which will likely reverberate on Monday.

    WSJ Real Time Economics

Feldstein, who is also the emeritus president of the business cycle dating organization the National Bureau of Economic Research, tied this risk of a renewed downturn after the worst recession in decades to a poorly conceived government stimulus effort. “I supported the idea we needed to have a fiscal stimulus, somewhat to the dismay of my conservative friends,” Feldstein said Sunday at a meeting of the American Economic Association in Atlanta. But the design of the stimulus was put in the hands of congress and it was poorly done, which meant it “delivered much less” in actual stimulus than its nearly $800 billion price tag suggested it should. While the stimulus has helped push the economy out of recession so far, other negative forces still at play raise questions about the effort’s ultimate durability. “There is a significant risk the economy could run out of steam sometime in 2010,” Feldstein warned.

The fading effects of the stimulus — a theme Goldman’s Jan Hatzius (among others) has been banging on — will be a growing story in 2010, particularly if GDP keeps coming in at a disappointing pace.

We’ve been talking about a “second stimulus” for awhile, and though we may not getting anything explicitly called as such, Obama’s forthcoming “hard pivot” from healthcare to jobs represents exactly that.

Newark Liberty International airport is one of this country’s busiest airports. The airport’s Terminal B will receive 150 full body scanners, with 12 passenger screening lanes when modifications are completed.

We have the incident aboard AirTran Flight 297. This has all the appearances of a group of Muslim terrorists conducting a dry run. It involved a group of belligerent Middle Eastern men refusing to following the directions of flight attendants.

We have the abandoned van in New York City, left with a phony police placard and no license plates, discovered in Times Square 24 hours prior to the big New Year’s Eve celebration. Great. Al Qaeda now knows they can leave a van filled with explosives in Times Square without attracting attention.

We’re not likely to have jihadists hijacking jetliners and flying them into buildings, but we clearly are vulnerable in lots of other areas. A homicide bomber like Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Fruit of the Boom guy from Flight 253, or Richard Reid, the Shoe Bomber, can drop a jetliner full of passengers over a populated area and result in hundreds of casualties. An abandoned van full of, say, ammonium nitrate fertilizer, nitromethane, and diesel fuel like was used in the 1993 Oklahoma City bombing, could be left virtually anywhere in urban areas: a shopping mall, for example, or a school.

  • Mike Iupati NFL Draft scouting report

    Mike Iupati
    6’6, 330 pounds | Guard | Idaho

Awareness: Has very good pre-snap awareness to diagnose where a play is coming from. Needs to sustain his blocks longer. Should stay on his initial man and finish off the block.  Too often Iupati releases his block to work on another defender.

Balance: Rarely gets pushed around at the line of scrimmage. Keeps his shoulders square. Always stays on both feet.

Initial quickness: Gets into position incredibly quickly. Gets from a three-point stance to having his arms up and his legs wide really fluidly. Moves off the line of scrimmage without hesitation. Has the quickness of a Pro Bowl left tackle.

Movement: Iupati has excellent footwork. Has a quick outside step. When he has to, Iupati works upfield quickly. Tends to move around too much instead of staying in his area. Very light on his feet. Works exceptionally well on the second level.

Pass blocking: Picks up stunts against quick ends well. Good help blocker, especially against ends who work to the inside. Has a strong hand punch to jolt defensive linemen.

Pulling: For a player his size, it’s surprising just how good Iupati is at pulling. he works really well on the move, working from left to right. Doesn’t make missteps. Is best when his target isn’t on the move.

Run blocking: Can be dominant on run blocking because of his size and strength. Aggressive off the snap, which helps him get leverage. Could do a better job of keeping his knees bent in run blocking so defenders don’t get under his pads. Does a nice job of moving to the side and pushing defenders into the pile to create running lanes. Keeps a good base and doesn’t get pushed back.

Size: Possesses great size for the position and has a good build throughout. Isn’t just a big, fat offensive lineman. Looks to be in good shape. Has long arms.

Strength: Does nicely off the snap dipping his shoulder and driving into defenders. His functional strength is ready for the NFL. He’s strong throughout his torso and has powerful legs. Looking at his frame, he could even get bigger, which is scary considering he’s already at 330 pounds.

Technique: Good job as a hand fighter keeping defenders out of his frame. But Iupati has to do a more consistent job with proper hand technique. At times would get complacent and drop his arms. Always keeps his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage at all times unless pulling.

Final word: Although it may have been against somewhat lesser competition, Iupati was arguably the best player on the field in every game he played in 2009. Iupati was a consensus All-American and a finalist for the Outland Trophy as a senior. What Iupati showed throughout the year is that he’s the premier senior guard prospect in the nation.

The question about Iupati is where to play him. His footwork, arm length and strength is so good he could probably play left tackle. Iupati could be the next Branden Albert – a solid tackle with little upside. Or he could stick at guard and start from Day 1.

Guards aren’t generally taken in the first round, but Iupati could be the exception.

  • Are The Steelers In The Playoffs

The Steelers’ offensive line doesn’t seem to be able to get an adequate push to allow the running game to operate effectively. That’s part of the reason why head coach Mike Tomin seems content to allow the offense to throw the ball 90% of the time. He doesn’t have confidence in the Steelers’ ability to run it effectively.

Kicker Jeff Reed couldn’t make a kickoff reach the endzone if his life depended on it. His lack of distance further exacerbates the problems the Steelers have with their special teams. It’s a good thing Reed is able to kick field goals accurately at Heinz Field (which isn’t easy to do), otherwise the Steelers would probably have gotten rid of him years ago.
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians doesn’t believe in traditional smash-mouth Steelers football. He doesn’t believe in using a fullback. He shows no commitment to running the ball. Nope, Bruce loves to throw the ball. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that Bruce Arians will be the first NFL offensive coordinator to utilize a 9 wide receiver set. Or perhaps 5 wide receivers and 4 tight ends. Either option would probably give Arians the orgasm of a lifetime.

The majority of Steeler Nation would probably like to see Arians executed, rather than just fired. Is execution legal in Pittsburgh?

I’ve been a Steelers fan for a long time. I can remember some terrible Steelers. Cliff Stoudt. John Reinstra. Jamaine Stephens. Tim Worley. Delton Hall. Sean Mahan. Huey Richardson. Troy Edwards. Tom Ricketts. Limas Sweed. You get the picture. Yet I can barely remember an entire Steelers team that was as flawed as this one. O-line, D-backs, special teams, coaching, etc. That’s a lot of flaws.

New England Patriots declared that Wes Welker will not be returning to play with them indefinitely. Being the New England Patriots receiver, the Wes Welker injury is a big hurdle for his teammates. Another teammate, Tom Brady, has also a rib injury that haunted him throughout the game. The New England Patriots and Houston Texans are tied 13-13 in the third quarter.
Welker went down on his first catch of the game in the Patriots’ first drive. He planted his left leg awkwardly, and had to be carted to the locker room after being helped to the sideline.

“We’re sick,” Leland Welker told the Globe. “We’re absolutely sick. We take all those hits and stuff all season long. And then just one fluke cut, and he just blows it out.”

The Patriots released no details about the extent of Welker’s injury. He led the NFL with 123 catches this season.

  • Solve the Frozen Bird Bath Problem

During the winter plenty of people feed birds but not as many folks make sure birds have fresh water. Birds need water year round and during the winter when most of water is frozen birds can have a hard time. A benefit for you is that you may get to see some new birds. Many birds don’t visit bird feeders, eating insects instead but all birds will visit a water source.

    winter bird bath

You can technically pour heated water into your birdbath and break up the ice daily but that’s a bother. You could also place fresh water out in a plastic bin a few times a day, also a big bother.

Better options include placing an electric heating element in the bird bath water – these are made to be submerged and they don’t cost too much. You can also buy a fully heated bird bath – these come in all sorts of shapes and sizes from typical pedestal, to deck mounted, to ground level baths. Heated bird baths vary greatly in cost depending on size and materials, but you can find plenty of options for under $100. Another option, the best in my opinion is a solar powered heated bird bath.

Solar heated baths cost more than other types but when you consider that you don’t pay for energy or have to unplug them or have to have an accessible outdoor outlet plus an outdoor extension cord a solar powered option starts to sound much more manageable and easy than an electric powered version.

Check out Birdbath.com or Birdwatching.com to find some good bird bath heating options.

  • Chris Johnson Tourettes, Does Chris Johnson Have Tourettes

Alright, so, I’m sure this will pass soon enough. These two have been going at it since #28 arrived in town, and it’s always been a playful thing. It’s actually kinda cute how they both feel the need to outdo and impress one another. Couple of sweethearts.

And to be perfectly honest, I’m not all that crazy about your new nickname Chris. What does it even mean? Wouldn’t every coaches dream go about his or her job in a quite, efficient and, most importantly, humble manner? I know Fish’s would. So instead, I’ll continue to refer to you just as I always have: “Twitch”. I think it makes you sound like a lunatic badass. You’re welcome.
Officially, a player needs 6.25 carries per team game to qualify for the league leaders in yards per carry. Michael Vick is the official career leader; he averaged 8.4 YPC in his final season in Atlanta. But if you want to measure yards per carry among running backs — and not just change of pace backs, but players like Johnson who are their team’s primary guy — then he’s chasing the immortal Jim Brown. Among players with at least 200 carries in a season, Brown’s 6.40 YPC average in 1963 is the greatest in NFL history. Every Coach’s Dream is averaging 6.42 YPC so far this season, which at least gives him a chance to break the record. Johnson’s YPC average through nine games is the third highest by any player (with 100 carries) since 1960: only Jim Brown (’63) and Mercury Morris (’73) were better.

  • WebOS to get 3D gaming and native application support in 2010?

    Quake-pre

WebOS 1.3.5 was released to the masses last week and its inner workings were promptly picked apart by eager webOS hackers. One of the most exciting finds was the inclusion of the SDL library in this latest version of webOS. SDL is an acronym for Simple DirectMedia Layer, an open source library that provides a programming interface to a platform’s underlying audio, graphics and input devices. Translated into English, this means that Palm webOS developers will have direct access to the underlying graphics hardware of a device making hardware accelerated graphics a reality.

The first realization of this hardware acceleration is a webOS port of DOOM, which was quickly followed by a port of Quake. An offshoot discovery also revealed native application support within the codebase of webOS 1.3.5, an inclusion which allows webOS users to install and launch a native Linux app without any hacking. Native Linux applications, SDL-support, and hardware graphics acceleration all add up to a potentially sweet gaming experience on the Pre and an equally exciting CES 2010 announcement. Hit the jump for a quick demo of Quake and Doom running on the Pre.
