  • Week 17 status check: Brees headed out, Broncos benched

    http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__18/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-150147706-1252470333.jpg?ym9IM3BD_nWIesyJ

We know some of you are still scrapping for a fantasy title, so let’s do our usual cross-check and see who’s in and who’s out for Week 17.

The Saints play to start Mark Brunell(notes) at Carolina Sunday while Drew Brees(notes) is the No. 3 quarterback – at least that’s what Sean Payton told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King. With Brees apparently out and Pierre Thomas(notes) out, it’s probably a dangerous week to go anywhere near the New Orleans offense; although Payton said earlier in the week that his team would take this game seriously, he might not be following through on that theme. We’ll see what the Saints say on Saturday.

Things are getting downright strange in Denver, where Josh McDaniels has essentially benched Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler for Sunday’s critical game against Kansas City. Marshall has been dealing with a tweaked hamstring and apparently McDaniels wasn’t thrilled with the wideout’s pain threshold. "There’s a lot of players that play with things that are more difficult to play with than what he has" McDaniels sharply offered to the media. The decision to sit Scheffler is also thought to be attitude-related, though the coach didn’t get into specifics. The Broncos will also be without Eddie Royal(notes) (neck).

Philip Rivers(notes) will start against Washington but Norv Turner says Billy Volek(notes) will see significant time as well. Don’t risk your Week 17 game on anything tied to San Diego. There’s a chance Vincent Jackson won’t play at all due to his Achilles injury.

Devin Hester(notes) (calf) has been removed from Chicago’s injury report, which takes away from the Devin Aromashodu(notes) buzz, unfortunately.

Jerome Harrison(notes) (hip) had a full workout Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday’s home game against Jacksonville. Looks like we can use him with confidence.

Heads up on Ahmad Bradshaw(notes) (foot/ankles), who didn’t work Friday and is considered questionable for Sunday. Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News doesn’t expect Bradshaw to play much if at all, and with the Giants out of the playoff hunt there’s a legitimate question as to how much they might want to expose Bradshaw in what’s a meaningless game to them. Gartrell Johnson(notes) is the next running option, if you’re really desperate. Hakeem Nicks(notes) (hamstring) is listed as probable, while Mario Manningham(notes) (shoulder) is questionable.

DeAngelo Williams(notes) (ankle) didn’t practice all week and is considered doubtful. Get ready for plenty of Jonathan Stewart(notes) (heel) against New Orleans.

Tom Brady(notes) (various) is listed as probable and barring a late change of heart from the Patriots he’ll start at Houston. Context clues point to Brady playing somewhat deep in this ballgame, but you know Bill Belichick – he’s not telling us anything of substance and he can always pull a surprise at the last second with no warning.

Hines Ward(notes) (hamstring) took all the reps Friday and is considered probable for the must-win game at Miami. Check back Sunday, but it looks like he’ll go.

Derrick Mason(notes) (knee) was limited all week and will be a game-time decision at Oakland. It’s hard to imagine Mason not playing in this must-win game, but you’re also dealing with a risky late start here, so there’s more risk than usual.

Michael Turner(notes) (ankle) missed another session Friday and it would be a major surprise if he dressed at Tampa Bay. The Falcons did have Matt Ryan(notes) (toe) and Tony Gonzalez(notes) (calf) for some snaps; Ryan should start while Gonzalez looks like a game-time decision.

Ricky Williams(notes) (shoulder) was limited Friday and looks like a risky option against Pittsburgh; while the Steelers defense has been in shambles against the pass most of the year, it’s still stout against the run. Look for Lex Hilliard(notes) to get more work than usual Sunday.

Beanie Wells (groin) is listed as questionable and had a limited day Friday (hopefully it didn’t take away from his enjoyment of the Rose Bowl). The Cardinals might choose to play it safe with him against Green Bay.

Steven Jackson (back) hasn’t been practicing and once again is a game-time decision. The unexciting Kenneth Darby(notes) figures to start if Jackson can’t go.

Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes) (ankle) took all the Friday reps and is probable to start for the Bills. That makes Terrell Owens(notes) and Lee Evans(notes) a lot more viable.

Justin Fargas(notes) (knee) missed Friday’s work and is considered doubtful for Sunday. Michael Bush(notes) and Darren McFadden(notes) figure to split the work.

Donald Brown(notes) (illness) took full reps Friday and will probably see a fair amount of action at Buffalo. Don’t look for Peyton Manning(notes) to stick around very long, however, and there’s a good chance Pierre Garcon(notes) (hand) won’t play.

The Vikings expect Visanthe Shiancoe(notes) (thigh) to play Sunday, though he’s listed as questionable. Check back before kickoff.

Santana Moss(notes) (knee) had a full practice Friday and is probable for San Diego, if you feel like riding with the Washington passing game.

Kellen Winslow(notes) (knee) had a full practice Friday and is probable for the home game against Atlanta. He’s worked reasonably well with Josh Freeman(notes), averaging 68 yards a game over the last seven weeks.

Julius Jones(notes) (ribs/ankle) had a complete practice Friday and will be in the mix against Tennessee, along with Justin Forsett(notes).

Torry Holt(notes) (finger) won’t play at Cleveland, capping an underwhelming year for him with the Jaguars.

Lance Moore(notes) (ankle) is another Saint who won’t play at Carolina, and the team also has problems at tight end, where Jeremy Shockey(notes) (toe, questionable) and David Thomas(notes) (calf, doubtful) are both banged up (Saturday update: Thomas didn’t make the trip). Don’t gamble on either of those guys.

Ricky Schmitt(notes) (groin) has been placed on IR, which means Shane Andrus(notes) will kick for the Niners at St. Louis.

Steve Smith actually wanted to play through his broken arm this week but the Panthers aren’t going to take that chance. He’s been put on IR and is done for the year. Muhsin Muhammad(notes) (ankle) practiced Friday and should be able to go.

  • The Old Railway Station | Skopje.Macedonia

The building of the Old Railway station was designed and built in the period 1938 -1940 by the Serbian architect Gavrilovic. During the 1963 earthquake it was partly damaged, and today what remains of it represents a monument to that catastrophe of the city. Since 1970 it has become the Museum of the City of Skopje which exists as of 1949. It was adapted to a museum and now it has 4000 m2 out of which 2500 m2 are planned for the permanent exhibition (which is now being set up) and 800 m2 are used as a gallery for temporary exhibitions.

The clock on this old train station stopped at 5:17 am since the morning of 26 July 1963, when this piece of the grand modernist station of Skopje was one of the few parts of the city that remained standing after a massive earthquake crushed the city. It measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, killed nearly two thousand people, and left over a hundred thousand homeless after destroying about 80% of the city. It’s a reminder of a tragic moment in Skopje’s history.

  • Copenhagen has given us the chance to face climate change with honesty

James Hansen has an article in The Guardian welcoming the demise of the Copenhagen conference – Copenhagen has given us the chance to face climate change with honesty. Points awarded to anyone who knew what “fugacious” meant before reading this…

Last weekend’s minimalist Copenhagen global climate accord provides a great opportunity. The old deceitful, ineffectual approach is severely wounded and must die. Now there is a chance for the world to get on to an honest, effective path to an agreement.

The centrepiece of the old approach was a “cap-and-trade” scheme, festooned with offsets and bribes – bribes that purportedly, but hardly, reduced carbon emissions. It was analogous to the indulgences scheme of the Middle Ages, whereby sinners paid the Church for forgiveness.

In today’s indulgences the sinners, developed countries, buy off developing countries by paying for “offsets” to their own emissions and providing reparation money for adaptation to climate change. But such hush money won’t work. Yes, some developing country leaders salivated over the proffered $100 billion per year. But by buying in, they would cheat their children and ours. Besides, even the $100 billion hush money is fugacious. The US, based on its proportion of the fossil fuel carbon in the air today, would owe $27 billion per year. Chance of Congress providing that: dead zero. Maybe the UK will cough up its $6 billion per year and Germany its $7 billion per year. But who will collect Russia’s $7 billion per year?

Most purchased “offsets” to fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions are hokey. But there is no need to flagellate the details of this modern indulgences scheme. Science provides an unambiguous fact that our leaders continue to ignore: carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning remains in the climate system for millennia. The only solution is to move promptly to a clean energy future.

The difficulty is that fossil fuels are the cheapest energy, if the price does not include the damage they do to human health, the planet, and the future of our children. “Goals” for future emission reductions, whether “legally binding” or not, are utter nonsense as long as fossil fuels are the cheapest energy. The Kyoto Protocol illustrates the deceit of our governments, which have not screwed up their courage to face down the fossil fuel industry. As the graph here shows, global fossil fuel emissions were increasing 1.5% per year prior to the 1997 Kyoto accord. After “Kyoto” emission growth accelerated to 3% per year. A few developed countries reduced their fossil fuel use. The only important effect of that was to slightly reduce demand for fuel, helping to keep its price down. The fuel was burned in other places, and products made were shipped back to developed countries.

As far as the planet is concerned, agreements to “cap” emissions, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the imagined Copenhagen Protocol, are worthless scraps of paper. As long as fossil fuels are the cheapest energy, they will be burned somewhere.

  • PICTORIAL PROGRESS OF THE IKOYI-LEKKI LINK BRIDGE

I know that we have previously discussed this project on this forum, but I cannot find the prior thread(s).

    Quote:

    Daily Independent (Lagos)
Julius Berger Begins Lekki Bridge, Badagry Road Upgrade With N10 Billion
    Michael Simire, 18 May 2009

The sum of N10 billion has been released by the Lagos State Government to bigwig construction outfit, Messrs. Julius Berger Plc, towards the excution of two major infrastructure development projects in the bustling city.

The projects include the expansion of the Eric Moore-Mile 2 Road (which is the initial leg of the multi-billion-naira, multi-phase Lagos-Badagry Expressway rehabilitation scheme) as well as the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge (connecting Lekki Peninsular Scheme I with Osborne Road in Ikoyi).

Finance Commissioner, Mr. Rotimi Oyekan, who made the disclosure last week at Alausa pointed out that the projects were initiated in furtherance of the government’s objectives of expanding and opening new roads for improved economic activities.

He said, "Our bold commitment to the initial funding of these projects is to demonstrate to interested private sector partners the sincerity of the government in the total transformation and rehabilitation of urban infrastructure and welcome their hand in fellowship on reasonable terms and conditions in this and other areas of development and growth."

The commissioner stated that the second tranche of the N275 billion Infrastructure Development Bond (IDB) for 2009 would soon be completed as the bond documentation was being rounded up. The first trance of N50 billion of the IDB, he noted, was over-subscribed, a development he attributed to "the public establishing confidence in our governemnt."

The IDB issuance, which commenced last year, will span three years and is designed to bankroll long term infrastructural projects. The financing vehicle is regarded as an alternative to short term borrowing, tending not to overburden the citizenry with arbitrary levies and tax increases.

Oyekan disclosed that government had established a Sinking Fund of N1.5 billion as Consolidated Debt Services Account (CDSA) into which is deposited monthly a sum of N1.8 billion, which is being managed by the bond trustees.

He described last year’s performance on Land Use Charge as encouraging as, according to him, the N500 million target was overshot by 100 per cent. A new N3 billion target has been set, he stressed, saying that there has been an improvement in the collection machinery.

"Enumeration and assessment of properties in catchment areas yet to be covered are ongoing with a view of bringing all areas of our local governments on a common platform of uniform property taxation devoid of inconsistency of complaints," he disclosed.

The commissioner added that, to facilitate the delivery of affrdable housing units to low income earners, government was procuring mortgage facilities while inculcating a new culture of home ownership.

"The plan is to kick-start the mortgage programme by encouraging some civil servants to acquire/own their inhabited staff quarters in the pilot phase. Thereafter, the scope and intensity of the mortgage programme will be widened to embrace willing partners in the implementation of the scheme," he said.

Oyekan went further, "I wish stress with emphasis that the reality of the all-pervading global economic meltdown will not dissuade government from prosecuting this programme as this is identified as one of the means of dousing the harsh effect of soaring and seeming uncormfortable cost of building materials. Presently, high-level discussions are being held with stakeholders particularly the participating banks, with a view to resolving emergent greu areas. Hopefully, the drea will be translated to reality soon."

Trouble at Three Castles (west of Gilf Kebir).
We went on without the car, its driver and our cook, who stayed to
wait for help to arrive from Cairo.
Fortunately we had satellite phones so the situation was well under control and help

In the meantime, the head driver did the cooking and he was excellent!

If you were to look for irony this would be the place to find it.
In the Second World War the Long Range Desert Group parked up a set of

The Hungarian Almasy (used loosely to form the character of “The English Patient”)
was working for the Axis forces and poured fine desert sand into the fuel tanks. He ensured that
different quantities were added so that the vehicles broke down at different

  • Plethora of new HP laptops, desktops leak ahead of CES

Holy smokes! A ton of unannounced HP laptops and desktops just came across our desk, in addition to those Envy models we saw just a few days back. Ahead of what we presume will be their formal announcement next week right around CES, we’ve got some details on 14 new models — some more interesting than others. Now, before you get too excited, we don’t have full specs on any of these, but we do have pricing information, and here are some highlights: the 14-inch HP Pavilion dv4i, a Windows 7 laptop with a flush display and fingerprint reader that should run about $785. Up next is the 10-inch Mini 210 HD Edition, which will come in red, black, silver and blue, boast Intel’s brand new Pine Trail platform (a 1.66GHz N450 CPU), plus GMA 3150 graphics. Another goodie here is that this one is expected to ship with Broadcom’s Crystal HD video playback chip. The Mini 210 HD is expected to cost around $330. Logic Buy (the point of origin for all this info) is reporting that these models should ship on or around January 7th, though keep in mind that all of this information is extremely unofficial, so don’t blame us if it all changes. If you simply can’t get enough, hit the gallery for a look at a few of the systems, and check the rest of the story after the break.

  • Skinny Jeans Are Better Than Sex, Survey Says

jeansNow that the new year is in full swing, what’s the top priority for most women? Nope, it ain’t career, money or relationships — fitting into those skinny jeans is at the top of our to-do lists for 2010. Recent survey by Special K have found that a third of the 2,200 women polled spend more time fantasizing about squeezing into some old denim than they do thinking about George Clooney or any other celebrity dreamboat. And 29 percent admitted that fitting into skinny jeans was better than sex. Wow, those are some powerful pants.

Here are some other skinny jean findings for you to chew on:

    • 35 percent of women admit to keeping an old pair of ‘trophy’ skinny jeans.
    • 28.9 percent said fitting into said jeans would be better than getting a promotion.
    • 20.6 percent said they’d choose the jeans over a lottery win
    • 11.1 percent said getting into those jeans would be better than a marriage proposal
    • Finally, 10 percent say the jeans have outlasted their longest relationships

Everybody loves a good pair of jeans, but is this skinny jeans craze turning into an unhealthy obsession? What do you think?

  • Avoiding Toxoplasmosis

If you’re a pregnant cat owner, you don’t necessarily have to get rid of Mr. Fluffy! Simple precautions will allow you to keep your feline friend when pregnant.

In fact, CDC says that you’re more likely to get toxoplasmosis from gardening or eating undercooked meat than from pet cats.

    cat-outdoors

The infection known as toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Even though most women infected during pregnancy will have no symptoms, the infection can cause big problems like miscarriage or premature birth. Infected infants are likely to develop severe symptoms later in life, including loss of vision and hearing, mental retardation and death.

The parasite is carried by some cats and is passed in their feces. Indoor-only cats who are fed cooked or commercial food are much less likely to carry the parasite. Yet, it’s important to note that cats infected with Toxoplasma gondii very rarely show any symptoms. Toxoplasmosis is usually only harmful to pregnant women and people who are immunodeficient.

According to Cornell University College of Vet Medicine, infected cats only shed Toxoplasma gondii a few days in their entire life, so the chance of human exposure is small. If you’re curious about how the organism works in cats, visit Cornell’s page on Toxoplasmosis in Cats.

Though the risk of exposure is small, it’s not zero. Pregnant women should take precautions against exposure to the organism that causes toxoplasmosis.

    If you’re pregnant:

    • Avoid contact with stray cats.
    • Have someone else clean the cat’s litter box or wear gloves and wash hands carefully after you finish.
    • Don’t feed your pet cat raw or undercooked food.
    • Keep your cat indoors.
    • Resist adopting a cat that has lived outside or has been fed raw food.
    • Wear gloves when gardening.
    • When preparing meat, clean all food prep surfaces and cook meat to the recommended internal temp.
    • Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk.
    • Cover sandboxes in your yard.
