  • Tomorrow Is National Book Burning Day; Thank Your Friendly Entertainment Industry Lobbyists

January 1st of each year should be National Public Domain Day, when many different creative works enter the public domain, where they can be made useful. In years past, it was a regular occurrence as tons of creative works went into the public domain each year. Often this was by choice on the part of the copyright holder. That’s because copyright used to have a renewal requirement, and the vast majority of copyright holders found little reason to renew their copyright. In 1958-59, only 7% of book copyright holders chose to renew their copyrights, meaning that 93% of books that could have been covered by copyright were allowed to enter the public domain. The small number that did have their copyrights renewed were (not surprisingly) the books that were still huge commercial successes, whose authors and publishers wished to retain their monopoly rights.

But a change happened in 1976 in the US, with the adoption of a new Copyright Act that not only took away the renewal setup, but also made very lengthy copyrights automatic on works. Add to that continued copyright extension at the urging of the entertainment industry lobbyists, and we haven’t had an actual Public Domain Day in ages — and many of us may never see another one in our lifetimes. Considering the incredible value that the public domain has on our culture, this is a huge culture killer.

James Boyle is noting that, assuming he would have renewed his copyright, tomorrow is the day that Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 would have gone into the public domain under the law as it was before 1976. But now it won’t be. Instead of the “book burning” found in that book, we’ve created a different kind of book burning. Thanks to lawyers, lobbyists and politicians, we’ve locked up a massive number of works that should be available for all, and the vast majority of which are available for none.

Unlike Fahrenheit 451, the vast majority of the culture swept into this 20th century black hole, was not commercially available and, in most cases, the authors are unknown. The works are locked up — with no benefit to anyone — and no one has the key that would unlock them. We have cut ourselves off from our own culture, left it to molder — and in the case of nitrate film, literally disintegrate — with no benefit to anyone. The works may not be physically destroyed — although many of them are; disappearing, disintegrating, or simply getting lost in the vastly long period of copyright to which we have relegated them. But for the vast majority of works and the vast majority of citizens who do not have access to one of our great libraries, they are gone as thoroughly as if we had piled up the culture of the 20th century and simply set fire to it; and all this right at the moment when we could have used the Internet vastly to expand the scope of cultural access. Bradbury’s firemen at least set fire to their own culture out of deep ideological commitment, vile though it may have been. We have set fire to our cultural record for no reason; even if we had wanted retrospectively to enrich the tiny number of beneficiaries whose work keeps commercial value beyond 56 years, we could have done so without these effects. The ironies are almost too painful to contemplate.

And, of course, it’s not just Bradbury’s book that is still locked up. Among the many things that would have/should have gone into the public domain tomorrow are Marilyn Monroe’s Playboy cover, JD Salinger’s Nine Stories and Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. But, again, it’s not these works that we should really be mourning. It’s the other works that no one really has access to any more. What a shame.

  • Dropping of Ethnic Questions in the 2010 Census – Questioned

Some ethnic groups are questioning the dropping of questions about folk’s ancestry in the 2010 census. Money is involved… Following is an excerpt from an article in the December 31, 2009 edition of Vindy.com. Note that race questions are included. Question 8 asks about Hispanic Origins, while Question 9 also deals with race. However, the questions don’t get down to country-of-ancestry in many cases.

    U.S. Census 2010

The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown is seeking people of Polish descent to participate in a national survey being conducted by the Piast Institute, an agency devoted to Polish and Polish American affairs.

The institute has launched an online 49-question survey to find out more about the attitudes of Polish Americans regarding key public issues and more.

The survey is a response to the U.S. Census Bureau eliminating questions about people’s ancestry on the 2010 census forms. Ethnic groups are worried they might lose their fair share of federal and private dollars as institutions often rely on census date to allocate funds.

  • Not getting stressed (rant post)

    How do you do it??

How do you juggle all these things, pills, and vitamins, and insurance, and medications, and highs and lows and eating properly, without just losing your mind?

I’ve fallen way off track and am trying to get back into a healthy routine, and all I can see is the stress of diabetes management, and I just don’t want to do it?

Is there any way to do it without thinking about it constantly?

Ugh. I know it’s just a bunch of hard work, and I’m hoping someone will chime in and be optimistic, because I’m not feeling it. I’m the eternal optimist about almost everything, but I’m having a hard time seeing the light.

It’s been a while since I really adhered to a proper management plan, and I’ve been eating carbs and sodium and cholesterol ridden foods. Yum. And I’m ready to get back into the swing of things because I like my kidneys, and noone’s going to give this fat diabetic a transplant when something fails.

I’m motivated – I just don’t know where to begin. My head is going to asplode.

Last week I woke up from a nap with my BP at 110/70, BG at 4.6, and went for a walk. I forgot how good it feels to have these things in check. I really want that feeling back, all the time.

Ok. That said, I have open prescripts for Lantus, Humalog, Humulin N, and Met. I’ve been taking the Met @ 1g, twice daily, every day, for a while. I really haven’t cut that out. As well, I’ve been using Humulin N, but not Humalog, not consistently. For the last month or so, just Humulin.

Around July my insurance provider threw me for a loop and said I reached my annual co-pay cap of $1000, and it’d reset on the next calender year, tomorrow, so this weekend I can go refill the coffers (butter drawer) with Lantus and Humalog. I think Humulin sucks. I much prefer the consistent and manageable effects of Lantus, and once-daily is more manageable to me.

What have my readings been like? Well, fasting’s been around 8 mmol. That’s ridiculous and kind of embarrassing for a lightly seasoned diabetic. I’ve been on insulin for a couple years. I realize that and I want it back in the 4.5-5.5 range.

My last A1C around June was 6.2 I believe. I want it at least a point lower, but considering what I’ve been doing, I’m sure it’s up to at least 7. At this point I really don’t want to know. I think it would just depress and demotivate me. I’ll check in a few months after buckling down.

Food wise, I really hate processed food. I almost never eat processed food anymore, almost never eat potatos/pasta, but find myself being a sucker for bread. Not all the time, but when I do get it, self restraint really goes out the window. Without having a bolus to compensate, it’s been a bit of an issue. My eating habits are basically sound – lean meat and seasonal veg with whole grains, mostly. Lots of olive oil, vinegars, citrus, lower salt (but sodium is still a monster in my closet). Adherence to a low-carb diet is usually a pain in my ***. Low carb, for me, usually means high fat and high sodium.

I’m a stubborn *** who always fights change. But I’m tryin. I’m workin on it.

I’m looking for some stress management tips so I can keep the momentum going. Suggestions?

  • Newer Type 1 trying to get pregnant…need some experts 🙂

Alright ladies, I had my daughter 2 years ago and was diagnosed as gestational diabetic. She was born at 37 weeks via c-sect weighing 9lbs 3ozs…big girl. I am 5’10 and hubby is 6’4 so big baby was probably going to happen regardless. Not until 4 months ago was I diagnosed with Type 1 😡 We went to a fertility specialist and go figure my bgs were 720 and my A1C was 14.8. They said I had been preggo but miscarried due to high bgs. Well that is behind us we got the green light, in the last 3 months thanks to some very tight control I am at an A1C of 6.5 and hope to get it lower. Has anyone had trouble getting preggo at that number or is the dr. feeding me a line and that too high? Thanks I could use some guidance this time around 🙂
  • Liquid Natural Gas — A Specious Climate Solution ?

TOD ANZ has a post pondering the pros and cons of LNG vs gas pipelines for exporting Australian natural gas – Liquid Natural Gas — A Specious Climate Solution?.

Nearly US$80 billion of investment is slated for developing liquid natural gas (LNG) projects in Australia and the Timor Sea. More are planned for Southeast Asia.

The good news is that these LNG developments are aimed are replacing dirty coal-fired power in Japan, China and South Korea with a cleaner fuel: natural gas.

The bad news is that LNG’s environmental benefits are potentially so illusory that Asia might be better served by a common carrier natural gas pipeline.

LNG is natural gas compressed 600 times. It is then shipped in pressurised ocean-going tankers. This front-end compression process burns up roughly 10% of the original energy. The pressurised tankers then draw off more energy for each day at sea. At the far end, regasification consumes even more energy

The cumulative losses are so great that LNG-based natural gas supplies may not be much better than coal as a future energy source, according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

Worse, shipping LNG requires huge investment in expensive, inflexible, single-purpose infrastructure. It’s a recipe for long-term financial waste.

With nearly a dozen LNG trains slated for development in Australia’s Northwest Shelf, northern Queensland, the Timor Sea and Papua New Guinea, this infrastructure could take Asia’s climate change battle backwards for decades to come.

Given the huge volumes of gas now involved in this burgeoning trade (nearly 60 billion cubic meters per year), a pipeline connecting Australia to China, Japan and South Korea may be a better deal.

Instead of insular, ‘go-it-alone’ buyer-seller LNG microeconomics, a common-carrier pipeline would enhance competition, lower prices and encourage development of smaller natural gas fields through increasing confidence in downstream market access.

Better yet, a pipeline could carry future fuels like hydrogen. LNG trains, tankers and regasification plants simply don’t have this flexibility. They risk becoming ‘stranded assets’ if future carbon pricing exposes their financial shortcomings.

If the LNG industry gets entrenched, it could doom Asia to a generation of suboptimal infrastructure. This, at at a time when trillions of dollars must be spent to battle climate change. Getting poor value for investment dollars is a bad way to fight global warming.

  • Bye Bye 2009

I had hoped today to write a poignant post reflecting on the past year or decade and adding some insights for the new ones. Instead, I spent the day entertaining my niece as the train had a two hour late departure and now I need to turn to the family New Year’s Eve celebration which involves rotini noodles and Lost. But I couldn’t leave this year behind without at least writing my one thousandth post on MotherReader – which is kind of cool – and without wishing you and yours a Happy New Year. Here’s to 2010!
“Bye, bye 2009, I did knot like you, I will not miss you and as far as I’m concerned, you had no meaning, you were ‘mean’ to everyone and everything, if we knew what you were all about, we would have passed on you. In other words, ‘You suck.’”

The 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade troop is appropriately named “Troop 2010.” Brandon and the other members of Troop 2010 were scheduled to walk the 5.5-mile parade route in full uniform alongside the 2010 BSA Rose Parade Float.
Brandon, 16, is the son of residents Patrick and Susan Chavez. He completed his Eagle Scout Board of Review on June 18, 2009 and had his Court of Honor on October 10 at the Diamond Club in Lake Elsinore.
The Tournament of Roses hosts a variety of activities with “America’s New Year Celebration.” In 2010, the Tournament of Roses will also host the Citi BCS National Championship Game in addition to the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl Game. Please click on the event title below for further information on tours and tickets.
A trip to the Rose Parade is “the ideal image of how to finish up a year,” said Rinehart. A double major in music and business administration and one of 14 snare drummers in the 225-member Ohio State band, the third-year member credits high school director Jim Templeton as his motivation: “He definitely pushed me in the right direction.”

  • 2010 New Year’s Resolutions from the RWW Geeks & Friends

Forget losing weight or finding the perfect life partner: All we want to do is make 2010 the biggest geek-out year ever.

The ReadWriteWeb crew have collectively planned to take over the world next year by honing our nerd super-powers. From programming in Python to building AI houses, we’ve resolved to be smarter, more curious, more technical and way geekier than we were last year. Read our resolutions, and definitely let us know what you plan to do to be the best geek you can be in 2010.

    Sponsor

The editor-in-chief himself, Mr. Richard MacManus, is known for his fascination with machine-to-machine communication via the Internet of Things. This year promises to be an interesting one at the MacManus residence if Richard’s resolutions hold true.

“One of my goals for 2010,” he said, “is to experiment with Internet of Things in my own house and life, using tools like Pachube and sensors. We’ll see how that goes…”

We wish you lots of luck, boss! If all goes well, you’ll be a prime candidate for the first episode of Geek Cribs, and we’ll all be very, very jealous.

Our own ReadWriteStart warrior, Dana Oshiro, is going to be a busy bee this year.

“I’m finding that the coolest ideas come out of academic institutions and enthusiast groups before they’re ever thought of as business-related products. In 2010 I plan on attending more hackathons, dev camps and emerging tech conferences like SIGGRAPH.”

In addition to all that conference-hopping, Dana’s going to be doing some web work of her own. “Honestly, I need to revamp my personal website Villagers With Pitchforks. I haven’t changed the design in years.”

Alex Williams, our resident enterprise expert, is also known in certain circles as an experienced podcasting pro. His resolution is something the ReadWriteWeb team would all love to see happen.

He told us that he wants to use 2010 to “make an informative and entertaining podcast for ReadWriteWeb Enterprise that is lively, smart and fun.”

What do our friendly readers think? Would you like to listen to awesome news about what companies and people are moving and shaking in the world of enterprise technology? What folks do you most want Alex to talk to, and what topics would you find most interesting? And where would you be most likely to listen to a RWW podcast? At your laptop, in your car, while walking your dogs? Let us know in the comments!

Our newest startup blogger, Chris Cameron, said he wants to use 2010 to press the flesh and put faces with names, so to speak.

“Since I’m the new kid on the block and fresh out of J-school with my M.M.C., my new year’s resolution is to get acquainted with as many people as possible in the web/tech/startup industry and develop a healthy amount of sources.”

As seasoned journos, it’s our sworn duty to protect cub reporters from no-account rabble rousers, so we asked Chris who he specifically wanted to meet this year. He replied, “I’d love to develop some contacts from the bastions of the Web (Twitter, Facebook, Google, Digg, etc.).”

You’re in good company, kid. We’d like to meet those guys, too. Just kidding! As a RWW blogger, you’re sure to have Kevin Rose and Biz Stone on speed dial in no time. We wish you luck.

Another ReadWriteNoob is Abraham Hyatt, our intrepid Production Editor. He’s got a full slate of resolutions this year.

He told us he wants to have more one-on-one time with “the bloggers I read every day, the people whose tweets I look forward to, the friends who surprise me with what they post.”

He also said he’s going to start paying attention to things outside the tech sphere and his geographical scene. “I want to change the fact that I have no idea what’s changing in journalism in China.”

And finally, Abraham let us in on how he’s keeping his finger on the pulse of technology. “I want to learn from my 5-year-old niece as she begins using the Web. I just hooked her up with her first kids browser and the way she interacts with the Web will be a hint of what’s to come for all of us online in the next decade.”

Add in learning how to code and blogging more, two of his other resolutions, and Abraham’s got a full dance card for the rest of the year!

As for me, I plan to learn Python this year. I’ve realized in 2009 that it’s harder to be a tech writer when you don’t have a hacker-esque depth of understanding about APIs and web apps. After talking to Leah Culver, Mark Jeffrey and a bunch of other really smart programmers, I think Python is a great place to start learning about programming languages. So this year, I’m tackling a 900-page O’Reilly book, and I’m not giving up until I have a working web app of my own! Next up, Haskell.

Via Twitter, we heard from a few of our friends, including entrepreneur Renato Valdés Olmos, who pointed us to this pretty web app for those without resolutions who yearn to start small. And everyone’s favorite O.G (that’s “original geek” in these parts), Chris Pirillo, just couldn’t resist the opportunity to get sassy. “My geekiest new year’s resolution,” he said, “is 2560×1600.”

So, what great and glorious plans have you got for 2010? Will you be hacking your way to entrepreneurial greatness by starting your own web company? Will you be building hardware? Are you resolving to start a new career path, go to a new conference or meet a lifelong tech hero?

Let us know your resolutions in the comments!

With our free pick for our forum visitors we will play on the Florida St Seminoles and West Virginia Mountaineers to play over the total of 60 points in the Gator Bowl on New Years Day. They kick the Gator Bowl off at 1PM Eastern Time and you can watch it on CBS. Florida St has a very poor defense allowing over 30 points a game. They can’t stop the run allowing 203 yards rushing per game and they cant stop the pass allowing 239 yards through the air. West Virginia has a playmaker in Noel Devine who will exploit this Seminoles defense. A poor defense like Florida St will have major problems defending the Mountaineers spread attack. Seminoles quarterback E.J. Manuel and lead running back Jermaine Thomas will generate enough offense to push this total over.

  • Propecia (finasteride) Online for Male Pattern Baldness

    Male Pattern Baldness

Male can feel embarrassed because of baldness. It starts with a receding hairline and gradually leads to complete hair loss. Men can buy Propecia to prevent baldness and hair loss.

Unlike most topical lotions and herbal supplements you get in the market, Propecia pills are clinically proven and approved by health authorities. You can get Propecia only on prescription.

    About Hair loss in men

Male pattern hair loss mainly starts near the temples and the top of the head and then shifts towards the back. Hair loss continues till the two bald areas join and form a horse shoe shape at the back of the head. In general terms, this is known as a bald pate.

    Causes of baldness

Hair loss is caused due to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. When testosterone in the body is converted into DHT in higher amounts, it leads to shrinkage of hair follicles to such an extent that they are unable to support hair growth and re-growth. After a while, the new hairs that grow are so sparse and small that they can not act as replacements for lost hairs. While the hair follicles are still alive, they are unable to grow healthy hair.

About Propecia finasteride as baldness treatment in men

Propecia, manufactured by Merck, is a clinically proven hair re-growth pill for men only. Following its success in clinical trials, it received approval from the European Union as well as the FDA as a male pattern baldness treatment. Its approval changed the way male hair loss was treated as it brought the simplicity of taking a single pill a day to this treatment. In some cases, it has even been found to promote good hair re-growth even in follicles that had stopped growing hair.

If you take Propecia for baldness treatment, you can prevent further hair loss and can even get new hair growth. Propecia is a prescription drug and you need to consult a doctor before you start treatment. The doctor will look at your medical history to determine if Propecia is safe for you and only then issue a prescription. Having been approved by medical authorities, Propecia is available both through local pharmacies and online.

    Side effects

Propecia is a prescription medication and so is bound to have certain side effects; however these are not as disturbing as the positive effects of Propecia. In clinical trials, side effects forced only 2% of men to give up Propecia treatment and even then, the side effects were mild and disappeared once they stopped taking Propecia. Mostly the side effects go away within a few weeks of commencing treatment. The most common side effects of Propecia observed in clinical trials are sexual in nature and include:

    Decreased libido

    Erectile dysfunction

    Decreased ejaculation

    Breast tenderness and enlargement

Rashes, itching and swelling of the lips and face

    Testicular pain

    How to buy Propecia online?

If you feel that Propecia is a safe and effective drug and decide to buy it, you can even buy it online. It is convenient to buy this drug online but it may prove to be unsafe if you by it from an illegitimate source. This increases chances you getting swindled and even getting fake and dangerous drugs instead of genuine and branded Propecia. Always choose a safe and reputed source to order Propecia, one which asks for prescription or has an online consultation facility. Once you do consultation with them, see if the doctor that approves your prescription is a registered doctor.
