At a suburban school district near Washington, D.C., the most popular teacher happens to be a local star on YouTube. Unbeknown to him, students with cell-phone cameras have videotaped him dancing to “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em” and other songs taught to him by the students.
U.S. representative Jose E. Serrano wants to turn the U.S. Postal Service (USPC) vehicle fleet green, Washington Post reported. We are talking about the largest civilian fleet of vehicles in the world (according to the agency), 220,000 vehicles which cover more than 1.2 billion miles (1.92 million km) each year.
The fleet burned last year 121 million gallons (458 million liters) of fuel, costing the agency approximately $1.3 billion. The average fuel consumption for a vehicle is 1… (read more)

Although there were no motorcycles featured in James Cameron’s latest success, a scene from the blockbuster Avatar and post film ads heavily promote lead star Sam Worthington as a biker. The bad boy image seems to be firmly associated with Harley-Davidson, just like in many other movies.
Cameron sets the rebellious tone of Worthington’s character by having him wear a Harley-Davidson T-shirt early in the movie, while in a bar.

One of the last sectors of the Venezuelan industry still untouched by president Hugo Chavez’s 21st century revolution, the auto sector, got a blow in the groins last week when Chavez asked Japanese carmaker Toyota to build an all-terrain 4×4 vehicle, to be used by people in the country’s poor, rural ares, or face expulsion from the country.
"What’s this that Toyota doesn’t want to make the ‘rustic’ model here?" Chavez was quoted as saying by CNN at a ceremony in Caracas… (read more)
A bunch of folks are sending in variations on this story saying that AT&T has stopped its online sales of iPhones to anyone in New York City. This is fueling all sorts of speculation, given that the NYC market was one where there were quite a lot of complaints about congestion problems for iPhone users. Add to that a random AT&T customer service person telling Consumerist “New York is not ready for the iPhone”, and you’ve got quite a story. AT&T’s initial response (at the first link above) is amazing for its lack of anything resembling an explanation:
“We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels,” said Fletcher Cook, an AT&T spokesman.
Further investigation by some turned up that you can get new iPhones in New York if you go into stores, or if you are an existing customer looking to upgrade. Plus, it looks like if you order directly from Apple itself, you can buy an iPhone in New York. So, on the whole this sounds like some sort of inventory management issue that will probably be worked out pretty quickly, rather than some attempt to limit usage of iPhones in New York.
Work on Mozilla’s upcoming add-on platform Jetpack is moving along at a steady pace with the release of Jetpack 0.7. It’s a mostly bug-fixing release, but it’s also introducing a new API designed to handle an add-on’s first run. A number of improvements and tweaks to existing features were also introduced. It should spur the work on new add-ons using the Jetpack platform especially now that a dedicated online gallery has been set up.
“We are happy to announce the release of Jetpack 0.7. Jetpack is a Mozilla Labs project which makes it possible for anyone who knows standard web skills (HTML, Javascript, CSS) to make Firefox add-ons. Jetpack 0.7 is mainly a stability release with a new API thrown in: a unified first-run experience,” Mozilla’s Aza Raskin wrote.
Jetpack works with the Firebug debugging add-on for Firefox again and developers can test their jetpacks with the tool, one of the advantages of using web technologies as the underlying platform. Other updates include better looking status bar widgets and an improved Settings API, originally introduced in Jetpack 0.6.
The new ‘first-run’ API is designed to give developers an easy way to handle the way their add-ons behave just after being installed. They are now able to direct users to a guide page or the project’s homepage by providin… (read more)
As you might imagine, Swedish car manufacturer Saab has quite a lot of fans, so closing it down might generate a lot of bad feelings towards GM. In an attempt to warn GM, one of Saab’s enthusiasts created a website called I won’t buy another car from GM.
According to the website, its mission is to answer a very simple question: Will you buy another GM product if they do not support Saab Automobile by selling the brand to a willing buyer?
Sberbank, the Russian state-controlled bank that backed Magna International in its attempt to take control of Opel, is now asking for compensations from General Motors after the US-based manufacturer canceled the sale in November. Although negotiations lasted for months, GM decided not sale Opel and start restructuring using its own resources and money coming from governments hosting Opel factories.
Just after GM announced its decision, Magna representatives stepped in and rejecte… (read more)
As predicted here on MobileCrunch earlier this month, Apple rocked it this holiday season, and the early numbers are showing it. According to Flurry, the biggest mobile app analytics company, iPod Touch download volume saw a nearly 1,000% jump in downloads on Christmas Day. Overall, the App Store saw a 51% increase in downloads from November to December (downloads only increased by 15% from October to November). Christmas also marked the first day that iPod Touch app downloads surpassed iPhone app downloads, which makes sense (the iPod Touch is a more common gift than an iPhone; more on that later). Furthermore, the Android Market saw a nice 20% bump in app sales as well, sparked primarily by an uptick in downloads from the Motorola Droid.
The data uncovers some interesting phenomena. First, it seems like parents bought iPod touches in droves. Flurry cited previous data that teens and pre-teens tend to download far more apps than older iPod and iPhone owners. VP of Marketing Peter Farago also noted that the iPod touch has clearly become a major player for Apple in terms of app sales. Second, Christmas is a huge day for app sales and app developers should take note. Just as the major retailers gear up for the holiday season, perhaps mobile app developers should be considering similar pre-Christmas preparations. If you’re developing an app at the end of the year, make sure to get it out before Christmas. Finally, I would expect an extremely strong Q1 from Apple. The data indicates that iPod touch sales skyrocketed leading up to Christmas, and that Apple’s App Store sales also saw a similar bump. Also expect the relatively smaller increase in month-to-month growth for Android to improve the value of Apple’s stock. It seems like, for now, they are defending themselves well against the Android OS. We’ll see whether that holds true after the Google Phone hits the market.
Santa delivered some good news for Motorola, too. The highest number of Android App Sales came from the Droid – in fact, 49% of all Android Apps sold on Christmas day came from that one handset. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to guess that the Droid is the best-selling Android-powered phone. That’s great news for Google, too, because it means that they are continuing to grow as a platform and that solid hardware (on the right network) can fuel that growth.
That said, the App Store is still destroying Android. Despite a lot of momentum and buzz behind Google’s vaunted, developer-friendly mobile OS, it really isn’t holding a candle to the iPhone OS. App Store downloads are 13 times greater than the Android Market. Additionally, the fact that the already-mature App Store saw a 50% monthly growth rate versus the Android Market’s 20% is impressive. One would think that the App Store growth would plateau at some point, but it doesn’t show any signs of leveling off just yet.
It’s important to remember that the data you’re seeing isn’t sales data, so of course many of the extrapolations are conjecture. It is plausible that the gap between the App Store and Android Market does not in any way relate to handset sales. Nonetheless, it is likely that the sale of the device would trend alongside app sales.

German driver Sebastian Vettel admitted that the new point scoring system introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for the 2010 season of Formula One doesn’t seem too radical.
Ever since the ruling body decided to change the system, there have been pros and cons regarding the new format. Based on the MotoGP point-scoring system, the one to debut in F1 next year puts more emphasis on the win (and the podium finishers) than before. The winner will score 25 points… (read more)
