  • Risk Of Double-Dip Recession Is Rising, Says Krugman

    Paul Krugman Leonard Lopate

Several recent reports suggest that the recovery is faltering.  See today’s ISM index, for example, as well as the global PMI, continuing jobless claims, and the house-price recovery.

Paul Krugman cites other disappointing news (as well as the ISM) and says that the risk of a double-dip is increasing:

I’ve never been fully committed to the notion that we’re going to have a “double dip” — that the economy will slide back into recession. But it has been clear for a while that it’s a serious possibility, for two reasons.

First, a large part of the growth we’ve had has been driven by the stimulus — but the stimulus has already had its maximum impact on the growth of GDP, will hit its maximum impact on the level of GDP in the middle of next year, and then will begin to fade out. Second, the rise in manufacturing production is to a large extent an inventory bounce — and this, too, will fade out in the quarters ahead.

Two stories this morning highlight the risks.

  • LA 2009: Hands-on with Hughes and Mercedes-Benz’s new telematics apps

Hughes Telematics recently announced its partnership with Mercedes-Benz on the automaker’s new line of “mbrace” mobile telematics solutions. The system, which connects mbrace-equipped vehicles with an app installed on the user’s Apple iPhone or RIM Blackberry, allows people to lock and unlock their doors, contact roadside assistance, get in touch with a local dealer or find their vehicle in a crowded parking lot. It’s a relatively trick technology that we spent some time with at the LA Auto Show, and there’s plenty of potential on the horizon.

  • Google Public DNS aims to speed up your surfing

Google is aiming to continue their attempt at speeding up the Internet with the introduction of Google Public DNS. What’s it do? Well, basically, they are promising faster DNS lookups than your ISP. According to Google, they aren’t going to hang on to the data, and the data doesn’t get associated with your Google account in any way. They will just keep data for two days, and use it to study how to speed up DNS across the board. If you wanna take the plunge, set the DNS on your computer or router to the following Google Public DNS IP addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

  • Aprons in the Kitchen

Generations of people have loved aprons, from frilly little numbers to serious barbeque models. They keep clothes from getting ruined by a splatter of grease from a frying pan or batter dripping from a mixing spoon, which makes them ideal for people who are whipping something up in the kitchen while wearing their party or work clothes. While they did fall out of favor for awhile, they’re back in again, especially if they are either vintage or handcrafted.

    retro apron

For those who have drawers stuffed with beautiful vintage aprons and still have the urge to collect more, there are a few fun ways to use these versatile items to decorate the kitchen.

    • A few half aprons can be tied side by side and attached to a curtain rod to make a fun valance.
    • An apron with beautiful embroidery on it can be folded to fit a shadow box and used as a piece of artwork.
    • If it has been torn, permanently stained, or otherwise ruined, you can use an undamaged part of an apron to make a potholder or tea towel.

Do you have any creative ways to use part of your apron collection in your kitchen instead of keeping it hidden away in cupboards?

  • The LA Auto Show, Hybrids, and a Bit on Micro & Mild Hybrids

What makes this year different from all others at the LA Auto Show, which runs December 4-13?  Well, for starters, there are 49(!) hybrids and alternative-energy models being shown (http://www.laautoshow.com/AlternativeFuelVehicles.aspx).  The Auto Show’s website lists the following automakers as showing such vehicles: Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Fisker, Ford, GMC, Honda, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.   For once US carmakers were getting a lot of the buzz; people are talking about the Ford Fiesta and the Chevy Volt of course.

Fisker Karma — being shown at LA Auto Show

And then there is the keynote address, delivered by GM’s Bob Lutz, who said, in part, At GM, we deeply believe that, in an energy-constrained world marked by dramatic growth in developing markets, it is critical that the global automotive industry – as a business necessity and as an obligation to society – develop alternative sources of propulsion based on diverse sources of energy. … Going forward, the automobile industry simply can no longer rely on oil to supply 98 percent of the world’s automotive energy requirements.” (quoted in AutoBlogGreen’s coverage by Sebastian Blanco: http://green.autoblog.com/2009/12/03/la-2009-bob-lutz-keynote-the-automobile-industry-simply-can-n/).

Bob Lutz — Keynote Speaker at LA Auto Show

At the same time, GreenCarCongress reports that Pike Research has predicted 10-fold growth in lithium-ion batteries by 2015, up from $878 million to $8 billion annually in that period.  That is in spite of the novelty and relatively untried technology involved.  They quote John Gartner, the senior Pike analyst as saying: “Just as Li-ion batteries are relatively untested in real-world transportation applications, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles are an unknown as a mass consumer offering. ” (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/12/pike-liion-20091203.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+greencarcongress%2FTrBK+%28Green+Car+Congress%29)

That constitutes quite a leap of faith, especially when at the same LA Auto Show, the “Green Car of the Year” (as named by a panel of experts and Green Car Journal) is not a hybrid but a diesel: the Audi A3 TDI.  According to Wired Autopia, “The A3 diesel is powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine that puts down 140 horsepower. It delivers 30 mpg in the city and 42 on the highway.”  (http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/12/audi_a3_tdi_green_car_of_the_year/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Index+3+%28Top+Stories+2%29%29)

Green Car of the Year — Audi A3 TDI

At the same time, there may be a growing consensus, at least in Europe, that the bridge from oil-powered to electric vehicles (BEV, PEV, EV, whatever you call them) may well be what are called “micro” or “mild” hybrids, rather than what the public knows as Prius-type HEVs.  That would not sit well with the lithium-ion crowd, because it’s unlikely that micro and mild hybrids will be made using li-ion batteries, which do seem to be the current candidate for pure EVs, although as we reported recently, the Nissan Leaf, set for introduction in 2015, will use a more exotic battery with a new-fangled cathode: lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide, referred to as a Nissan Super Battery.

In fact, most micro and mild hybrids today are using a variation of the traditional lead-acid battery, variously called a VRLA or AGM battery — much less expensive than a comparable NiMH or Li-ion version.  Interestingly the micro and mild hybrids can achieve pretty good improvements on mileage and on carbon emissions, which is the key to the technology.  The EU has carbon limits it will impose, backed by draconian fines on automakers, on 2012 fleets.  Those limits can be reached with full hybrids like those being shown in LA, or with EVs like the US-based privately held Fisker and Tesla vehicles, or the Norwegian Th!nk Electric mini-cars, and a variety of other fairly uncommon passenger vehicles.  The EVs have no carbon emissions at all, so they are a bull’s-eye for carmakers looking to comply with the 2012 bogey.  And, as we reported recently, there are several candidates for no-emission winners among commercial vehicles.

According to some estimates,  10-13 million vehicles will be outfitted as micro hybrids within a couple of years, affording improvements in carbon emission or mpg of up to 15%.  A micro hybrid assembly assists the gas-driven engine only (there is no electric drive train, and they never power the car solo), and some use the friction of regenerative braking to recharge themselves.  On the other hand, they are mostly a drop-in or clip-on technology that is relatively easy for a carmaker to implement.  Mild hybrids, which offer even more efficiency, may follow along behind, but are anticipated to be slower off the block than the micro assemblies.

The sticking point is the energy storage device.  Even “advanced” lead-acid batteries face classic problems: corrosion and sulfation on the poles, slow re-charging, and limited life expectancy.  All the newer, more exotic batteries face cost issues, and some may face safety issues as well.  What is needed is a battery that combines the cost and easy of manufacturing of lead-acid with the better performance characteristics of higher-priced batteries.  The difference may lie with a relatively cheap ultracapacitor: carbon.

Several companies have been developing lead-acid batteries with new, potentially game-changing technologies.  Peoria IL-based privately held Firefly Energy (http://www.fireflyenergy.com) offers its Microcell(TM) foam grid technology.  With a strong scientific background, the Firefly battery is being tested by the US Army and by a small number of others, but does not seem to be in mass production.  Lyon Station PA-based privately held East Penn Manufacturing (http://www.eastpenn-deka.com) , a major supplier of lead acid batteries) is working with Japanese developer Furukawa on an UltraBattery with an enhanced negative electrode that also seems not to be ready for prime time yet.  And New Castle PA-based Axion Power International* (OTCBB: AXPW; http://www.axionpower.com) has introduced its PbC battery technology, being commercialized in a supply agreement with global battery giant, Alpharetta GA-based Exide Technologies (Nasdaq: XIDE, http://www.exide.com/).  The PbC battery may be the closest to the finish line with a multi-patented nanocarbon electrode that maximizes performance and minimizes lead-acid downsides such as corrosion and sulfation, while preserving its price advantage and ease of manufacturing and recycling.   One of these may be the winner of the micro hybrid sweepstakes.

Meanwhile, the King of the Hybrids, Toyota, is showing the 2010 Prius at the LA Auto Show — this time with a Panasonic lithium-ion battery instead of the NiMH batteries of the first two generations of Prius (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/12/prius-phv-20091202.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+greencarcongress%2FTrBK+%28Green+Car+Congress%29).  Hyundai is showing the 2011 Sonata hybrid, with its own li-ion battery pack (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/12/hyundai-introduces-2011-sonata-at-la-auto-show-with-4cylinder-gdi-engine-gdi-turbo-and-hybrid-powert.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+greencarcongress%2FTrBK+%28Green+Car+Congress%29).

At the LA Auto Show it is clearly the Year of the Hybrid, and it is clearly the year of the Asian-made li-ion battery, which must be a bit of a trial for the US-based li-ion giants: Johnson Controls/Saft, Ener1 Inc, and A123 Systems.  Go see all the hybrids, see the future of vehicle transportation — and have fun!

  • Are Newspapers The TiVo Of News?

Earlier this year, The Daily Sho did a segment about the New York Times, where correspondent Jason Jones had the classic line where he referred to the paper newspaper as providing “aged news”. Danny Sullivan has posted an interesting rethink on that, noting that rather than “aged news,” what if we just think of newspapers as “stored news,” or more specifically “a TiVo for news” or an “iPod for news.” It’s based on a recent talk given by Kevin Marks, where he notes that despite all the hype about “real time” info, people will pay plenty to store and delay information, such as with a TiVo or iPod.

It’s an interesting idea, but if that’s the case, I’m not sure the newspaper is really the best or most efficient means of “storing” news. Part of the reason why the TiVo (or other DVRs) and the iPod have been so successful is not just because they allow for the storage of content, but because they allow for the customization of what content, and give significantly more control over how it’s consumed. Newspapers aren’t quite like that. They tend to be more “here’s what we’ve decided you want,” rather than a delivery of what you’ve asked for or chosen to store. I would think that something like an RSS aggregator would be a lot more like “TiVo’d news” than any newspaper.

  • LA 2009: Galpin Motors makes up for Aston Martin no-show, brings the whole lineup

Galpin Aston Martin at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show – Click above for a high-res image gallery

It’s been a meager LA Auto Show this year for exotic cars. Many didn’t even show up, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bentley. Aston Martin wasn’t on the list as well, but to our surprise their full line of cars was on display. Apparently Galpin Motors decided to pick up the slack and brought a decent selection of the inventory from the Van Nuys, CA showroom. We generally don’t think of Aston Martin when we hear about Galpin, but the world’s largest Ford dealer also has an impressive showroom for the British marque. In fact, it’s where we were able to get up close and personal with the Aston Martin One-77.

Beau Boeckmann, Vice President of Galpin Motors, told us that they considered the show important enough for their Aston Martin sales to make the investment. This makes us wonder how the absence of Ferrari, Lamborghini and the like will impact local dealers. If so, we can see many following Galpin’s lead and bringing cars next year like many of the regional shows. Only time will tell, but we can’t imagine the exotic car manufacturers staying away from the auto show in one of their most important markets for too long.

  • Inside Line editors pick their ‘Most Wanted’ for 2010 – do you agree?

Inside Line Most Wanted 2010 – Click above for high-res image gallery

We love award season, even if it is a bit tough to keep up with them all. Motor Trend has a set of golden calipers for its Car, Truck and SUV of the Year winners. Car and Driver has its 10Best. Automobile has the, well, the Automobile of the Year. Then there’s Edmunds Inside Line and its six Most Wanted winners. Sure, Most Wanted doesn’t enjoy the same sort of name recognition as the aforementioned awards, but at the very least, we tend to like the vehicles IL picks as their favorites. We also appreciate the fact that their selection process isn’t exactly chock-full of rules. If they tested the vehicle before November 1, 2009, then it’s eligible for Inside Line’s six shooter. The only award category that truly stands out is the “Instant Classic,” an award won over the last two years by the Audi R8 and the Nissan GT-R, respectively.

This year’s list didn’t have quite the raw power of last year’s winners, but we can definitely see where the final six could be considered big fun on four wheels. The big winner is the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The 540-horsepower pony car picked up IL’s Instant Classic award for being such a willing dance partner – even at 3,900 pounds. In fact, Blue Oval badges dominate this year’s Most Wanted list, as the EcoBoost’d Flex and the wicked cool F-150 SVT Raptor made the final cut. Porsche scored with its new Panamera, while Audi found its way back on the list with the R8 V10. The cheap thrills Mazda3 rounds out this year’s list. Click on the gallery below to check out Inside Line’s Most Wanted winners in our high-res gallery, then let us know if you agree with their findings by leaving a note in ‘Comments.’

  • Health Care Cutting into Holiday Spending

Because of rising health care costs, two in five Americans are planning to spend less this holiday season. The figures come from a new survey released today from Misericordia University and Braun Research.

Does the survey finding about health care costs affecting holiday spending ring true in your family’s household? Even with health insurance that pays as much as 90% of a surgery cost, some patients may still be left with bills in the thousands. I was quite amazed to learn last year that my portion of a sinus surgery that my insurance paid 90% of was still about $1,000!

    Christmas ornament

According to the survey, the health care reform debate is a cause of stress or annoyance among the majority of Americans. Three of 10 Americans surveyed say the health care debate has led to arguments and tension with friends and family members. Additional concerns noted in the survey include the cost to future generations, impact on the federal deficit, and the accessibility of quality coverage, as well as the cost of out-of-pocket expenses .

The “Health care in America Survey” was conducted via phone with more than 1,000 Americans between November 6 and November 16, 2009.

    Additional survey findings:

    • Almost a quarter of Americans surveyed say they would consider withholding information from an insurance provider if it might limit their ability to access health care.
    • Nearly a quarter of Americans are taking fewer sick days at work.
    • More than 90% of Americans say they’re satisfied with their insurance coverage. Yet, around 33% of Americans don’t take advantage of preventive health testing/screenings available through coverage.
    • Because of the recession, Americans have felt pressured to prioritize health care alongside other expenses. Some even go without treatment for illnesses or visit the doctor less.

Can you identify with any of the survey findings?

  • LA 2009: Audi A3 TDI named 2010 Green Car of the Year in diesel repeat

Audi A3 TDI – Click above for high-res image gallery

At the LA Auto Show this morning, the Audi A3 TDI was crowned the 2010 Green Car of the Year, wresting the title away from last year’s winner, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Even though three hybrids made this year’s list of finalists, the A3’s win marks the second year in a row that a TDI diesel car took top honors in the Green Car Journal competition.

The judges selection kind of meshes with AutoblogGreen readers, who overwhelmingly picked the VW Golf TDI from the list of five finalists. The other contenders were the Honda Insight, the Mercury Milan Hybrid (we still don’t get why this car beat out the better-selling and nearly identical Ford Fusion Hybrid) and the Toyota Prius.

Each year, Green Car Journal picks the five finalists and then hands over selection duties to celebrity jurors (Jay Leno, Carroll Shelby, and the Sierra Club’s Carl Pope, to name a few). During the award ceremony, Green Car Journal editor Ron Cogan said that the five finalists are notable because they are all mainstream vehicles that are available today. They exist because that’s what the market is asking for. Whaddya think? Is the A3 TDI this year’s rightful Green Car of the Year?

Krator Guitar Hero controllerEver see a game peripheral so classy that you have to put your pants through an extra wash cycle?

Speaker company Krator recently released pictures of the unreleased Krator Orpheus WG-07 controller for Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and dear god is that hot. Look at that inlay! It’s apparently made out of metal and aluminum, offers a range of 10 meters wirelessly, and works for the PC and PS3, but nothing further has been released about the guitar or when it might go on sale. Not that I need it or anything. My Guitar Hero skills are stuff of legend and have been documented by the health department to be the number three cause of teen pregnancy.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s best to aim high, right? While most of the automotive world (ourselves included) are busy comparing the rather wonderful Suzuki Kizashi with logical competitors like the Volkswagen Jetta – not to mention larger cars like the Honda Accord, Mazda6 and Ford Fusion – it seems the Japanese automaker itself has its sights set a bit higher… all the way up to the Audi A4 and Acura TSX, point of fact.

Called the “Kizashi Test Drive Challenge” incentive program, Suzuki is offering sport sedan buyers $100 if they test drive the Kizashi first and still end up purchasing either a 2010 Audi A4 2.0T or four-cylinder 2010 Acura TSX within 10 days of the test drive. The program ends runs through January 31, 2010. Says Koichi Suzuki, executive vice president of American Suzuki Automotive Operations:

With styling, performance characteristics, luxury features and a new advanced All-Wheel-Drive system on par with the Audi A4 and Acura TSX, we’re excited to extend this unique offer to consumers across the country, providing potential sport sedan buyers another reason to consider the all-new Kizashi-at a substantial savings. We’re definitely putting Kizashi’s premium without the premium moniker to the test.

Like we said, aim high. Read the full set of terms and conditions in the complete press release pasted after the jump.

  • LA 2009: Bye-bye boxy, hello 2010 Hyundai Tucson

2010 Hyundai Tucson – Click above for high-res image gallery

Hyundai just took the wraps off their all new 2010 Tucson CUV. A right-sized (i.e. compact) crossover designed in Frankfurt, Germany – as opposed to the California designed Sonata we saw yesterday – but still uses Hyundai’s new design language, the oddly named Fluidic Sculpture. Like the Sonata, the new bigger-yet-lighter Tuscon (61 pounds, to be precise) has been designed to convey a sense of motion. Of course, whether they succeeded or not is up to the beholder’s eye.

Hyundai feels that the compact CUV market is growing (as does the rest of the industry), however the small crossover buyer is changing. Used to be that when people shopped for say a Tucson, it was because they couldn’t afford an Excursion. No more. The new small CUV buyer expects a higher level of comfort and refinement from their little truck-like rides. If what Hyundai’s peddling proves true, the Tucson’s impressive list of standard bells and/or whistles fits this projected market to a tee (see the press release for the full lowdown).

The most impressive Tuscon attribute is in likelihood its frugal MPG rating. 23 miles per gallon in the city, 31 at highway speeds. In addition to the slight weight reduction, the Tucson achieves these numbers via innovations such as a switch away from parasitic hydraulic power-steering in favor of an electric system. There’s also an all new six-speed automatic that uses 62 fewer parts than the outgoing five-speed. Interestingly, the new slusher is built fully in house by Hyundai.

The engine of course contributes to the good-for-a-CUV mileage. The new Tucson comes with a 2.4-liter Theta II four-cylinder that produces 176 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque. You will notice that the Tucson does not come with the more powerful Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI) Theta II that ships with the new Sonata. We asked Hyundai if a future iteration of the Tucson (say the 2011) would in fact receive the GDI motor. “That’s a logical conclusion.”

We also asked if the turbocharged GDI motor would make it into the Tuscon. “It would fit.” We then asked if we’ll see a hybrid version as the new Sonata will eventually show up in gas-electric guise. “No comment.” Then after a pause, “We all have to get to 35.5 mpg.” Finally, we asked if we’d see an all-electric version of the Tucson. We received another “No comment,” but Hyundai North America President and CEO John Krafcik did state that they will be selling an electric car in the States. As to when, “Not next year.” Read the press release, after the jump.

  • Danish Anti-Piracy Group Tells DVD Ripper Who Turned Himself In That It Won’t Sue Him

A bunch of folks have submitted the story of Henrik Anderson, a Danish man who ripped a bunch of DVDs for personal storage, and then turned himself in, noting that even though Danish law says it’s okay to make a backup copy of content for private purposes, it also forbids circumvention of DRM, such as the DRM found on DVDs. We had avoided posting anything on the story until the Danish group responded, and while it missed the original deadline, it has now stated that it will not go after Anderson, so long as he’s only using the content for private use:

The main purpose of the rule is to ensure against abuse of films and music being illegally copied and distributed further. The Association of Danish Videodistributors certainly have no interest in suing consumers who like you have purchased legitimate products — quite the contrary.

Of course, if that were true, then wouldn’t the Danish Antipiratgruppen push to change the anti-circumvention law that makes this particular process illegal? After all, shouldn’t they stand behind what they claim?

    PRESS RELEASE

Cibus Global and NEU Seed to Develop Potato Crop Protection and Performance Enhancement Traits for North America

San Diego, California (December 2, 2009) — Cibus Global, a pioneering plant trait development firm, today announced that it has partnered with Naturally Enhanced United Seed (NEU Seed), a potato grower cooperative based in Idaho, to develop and market improved traits in potato using Cibus’ natural smart breeding tool, Rapid Trait Development System (RTDS). The collaboration will initially focus on enhancing crop protection tolerance and reducing blackspot bruising, with the aim of improving both productivity by reducing pesticide usage and the overall quality of potatoes available to the consumer.

Potato bruising costs the U.S. potato industry nearly $300 million a year* and NEU Seed estimates that 60 percent of this is attributable to blackspot bruise. In addition to yielding significant economic advantages for farmers and consumers through reduced waste, NEU Seed and Cibus have focused on newly developed traits that are expected to reduce usage of pesticides and improve the sustainability of potato production. Eventually the partners intend to collaborate on the development of other important traits to create healthier potato plants with improved quality attributes that will benefit the consumer and potato industry.

RTDS is an environmentally safe, trait development procedure that will use the potato’s natural process of gene repair to effect a precise change in the genetic sequence. By mimicking natural methods in a highly targeted way, RTDS technology avoids the introduction of foreign genetic material into plants. RTDS has been recognized by the USDA as a mutagenesis technique, and is therefore not subject to the regulations applied to transgenic (or GM) crops. Mutagenesis-derived crops and traits are produced around the globe in a number of food categories, including grains (rice, oats, durum wheat), vegetable oil crops (sunflower, canola, flax), beer ingredients (barley, hops, yeast) and seedless fruits (grapes, citrus fruits).

Cibus President Dr. Keith Walker said, “RTDS technology is revolutionary in that it enables the development in plants of valuable traits that enhance overall efficiency and product quality through a natural process. Globally, potato is a very important food crop, and Cibus is proud to work with NEU Seed and the potato industry to enhance production and quality for the benefit of farmers, processers and consumers.”

“Cibus offers the potato industry a naturally accelerated breeding process that will lead to new and innovative technology solutions for the farmer,” said Dirk Parkinson, potato grower and President of NEU Seed, from Saint Anthony, Idaho. “The RTDS technology offers North American farmers the ability to develop valuable traits through a carefully targeted process that mimics what occurs in nature. This directed and efficient approach allows for lower production costs and significantly enhances the overall quality of our product for our customers.”

    Notes to Editors:

    About Cibus Global

Cibus Global (http://www.cibus.com/) develops advantageous crop traits with far-reaching implications in agriculture, alternative energy and product development. Through its proprietary Rapid Trait Development System (RTDSTM), Cibus creates traits in a directed way with more precision than traditional breeding techniques and without the introduction of foreign genetic material. RTDS has proven itself in the laboratory with several different applications, as well as in initial field trials of Cibus’ first commercial crop, canola. Cibus’ products will be brought to market through a number of strategic partnerships; in September 2009, Cibus announced an alliance with Israeli-based Makhteshim-Agan to develop five crops for the European marketplace.

    About NEU Seed

Naturally Enhanced United Seed (NEU Seed) was formed in November 2008 to develop and market potato cultivars with new innovative traits for growers, processors and consumers. NEU Seed is a cooperative of seed potato growers, based in Rexburg, Idaho, with a membership of growers from both Idaho and Montana. NEU Seed has entered into partnering agreements with Cibus Global and is seeking seed potato grower members from other seed producing areas of North America to join with NEU Seed to bring value added potato traits to market.

  • No Brain Tumors with Cell Phones: Study

Despite warnings to the contrary, the increasing use of cell phones has not resulted in an increase in brain cancer (glioma and meningioma), show the results of a study looking at 60,000 people diagnosed with brain cancer over a 30-year period, from 1974 to 2003. The people were all aged between 20 and 79 years.

Researchers in Denmark found that the incidence, the number of brain cancer cases diagnosed, was the same at the end of the study as it was at the beginning, went down, or increased before the large-spread availability of cell phones.

young woman speaking on cellphoneCell phones have been blamed for brain cancer in previous research, but with a very small increase. The National Cancer Institute has a page on cell phones and brain cancer, where there are explanations about why the fear exists and what types of radiowaves are emitted by cell phones.

One thing to keep in mind is that this study, which was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, was done on adults and not children, so it makes no claim as to whether cell phones have an effect on the brain in children. As well, although the period was over 30 years, it could be that the time from when cell phones really became popular hasn’t been long enough to study the long-term effects.
