  • Modular worm reducers series RT

Varvel announces the implementation of modular worm gearboxes, Series RT.

The gearboxes are made of pressure die-cast aluminium housings and covers from size 28 to 85 and cast iron for size 110 up and are lubricated with synthetic long-life oil.

The major features of the new series RT are the “universal” B3 foot mounting, the easy fitting/replacement of input flanges B5 or B14, output flanges on both sides of the PC shaftmount basic version.

Furthermore the usual key-coupling between motor and gearbox was replaced by a customized elastic coupling type “G” without any increase in the geared motor dimensions allowing the motor shaft matching to an external coupling kit and not to a prearranged gearbox.

Such features make the new Series RT particularly fit for distribution, that is more and more concerned about versatility, inventory control and configuration flexibility.

  • New Electromechanical NC Joining Module NCFB – a Low-Cost Alternative

Kistler’s electromechanical joining modules facilitate automation of force-displacement monitored joining and press-fitting processes. The new NC joining module NCFB Type 2160A… has been specially designed for standard joining processes and is an enhancement of the existing product range. With its cost-optimized design, it offers a more favorable price/performance ratio. The piezoelectric force sensor integrated into the robust case offers a choice of two predefined measuring ranges, 50 kN and 25 kN, for precision force measurement.

Even deep end points such as the position of bearings in half-shell gear boxes can be easily reached with a 400 mm stroke. The speed of up to 150 mm/s offers a quick return stroke and hence a short machine cycle, even for a long idle stroke. The use of the absolute encoder, which is part of the standard equipment on all Kistler NC joining modules, eliminates the need for reference point determination even during operation.

The NC Compact Firmware (Type 2159A…), which is integrated into the servo controller, is perfect for simple force displacement evaluation and documentation of standard joining tasks with the NC joining module NCFB. With extremely low investment and mounting costs, it facilitates integration into the customer’s existing control environment.

The Operating Panel (Type 2158A) is used for parameterization and visualization of a standard joining process and for data backup. It is not required for ongoing operation. It has 16 different programs for optimum flexibility in the joining process. These contain functions such as measuring range switchover, fast shutdown, force control, active deflection compensation which eliminates the effect of bending of the customer’s assembly, intermediate positioning and evaluations with up to three analysis windows.

The force-displacement monitoring unit DMF-P A300 NCF Type 4734A… can be used as an alternative to the NC Compact Firmware. With its wide range of analysis windows, it can evaluate the force displacement curves of virtually any application. Moreover, it allows comprehensive documentation of curve developments and the associated target and actual values.

  • New MT-400 assembly table from LOHMEIER

Vlotho – At the 2009 SPS/IPC/Drives exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, LOHMEIER presents a new assembly table for populating and wiring mounting plates. The height-adjustable and tiltable table helps implement the optimal working position. Moreover, it enables users to install the populated, often heavy mounting plates into the control cabinet without additional hoisting tools: the table, which carries the fully wired plate, is simply upended and slid side-ways on a roller rail onto guide rails inside the cabinet. Four caster wheels with total lock brakes allow for the mounting plates to be moved between the work stations. Users can thus not only perform the majority of equipping and wiring tasks, but also carry out inspection tasks before final assembly.
The MT-400 type table is suitable for mounting plates measuring up to 1,200 x 1,900 mm and weighing up to 400 kg. The plates are fastened to the table via quick release latches. They can be upended or tilted at any angle up to the horizontal level. The table is variable in height between 750 and 1,150 mm. Height and tilt can be freely adjusted via remote control. Time-consuming and laborious handling is altogether minimized. As a further advantage installation on the assembly table means that control cabinets do not enter the production cycle until final assembly since the mounting plates remain on the table throughout the process, which saves much-needed space.

For perfect ergonomics and to suit the specific work place requirements, the assembly tables can be individually equipped. Optionally, they can be fitted with e.g. power supply, compressed air supply, chip suction device, small parts containers, tool holders, cable reels, and lighting. LOHMEIER alternatively offers assembly tables for sale or leasing

  • Parallelism Sensor Systems Improve Solar Pane Production Efficiencies

Capacitec, a global leader in the design and manufacture of non-contact capacitive displacement, gap and parallelism sensing technologies for scientific and industrial customers, has announced the debut of a series of non-contact capacitive gap and parallelism sensor systems for the solar panel market. The systems are designed to measure the precise distance between liquid, anti-reflective and CVD coating head-to-media during solar panel production, helping manufacturers maintain thin-film coating uniformity, while improving yields and efficiencies.
The unique expertise of Capacitec within the solar panel manufacturing market is the culmination of more than 15 years of successful implementation of measurement technology within the semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as well as in design of slot die coater gap measurement systems sold to companies, working with customers such as 3M, DuPont and Avery Dennison. Within the liquid coating market, Capacitec has successfully collaborated with leading global manufacturers of labels, tapes and films, as well as slot die suppliers, to develop new systems that more precisely measure coater gaps. These systems have made dramatic improvements over traditional gap measurement methods allowing manufacturers to achieve coater gap uniformity of better than 0.25 microns, with gaps as thin as 110 microns across the full length of the coater die.
In traditional solar panels, a thin-film PV layer is deposited onto the silicon layer using a Chemical Vapor Deposition process. Additional layers are added and the PV module is then encapsulated between a glass panel and reflective backing, forming the Solar Panel Module. Capacitec systems are used during each of these steps. In flexible solar panels, CVD coaters are used in the production of the Transparent Conductive Oxide. In this case, a Capacitec parallelism sensor system is used to measure the distance in-process between the CVD coater head and metal carrier roll, in temperatures up to +600°C. During OPV solar panel fabrication, a Capacitec slot die coater gap measurement system is employed to maintain organic material coatings uniformity during PV production. Capacitec systems are also used to maintain parallelism between the Slot Die Coater and metal roller, as well as the parallelism of metal rollers during the encapsulation stage. For more information about these and other non-contact capacitive sensing systems available from Capacitec, please visit www.capacitec.com.

  • New hose series for potentially explosive atmospheres acc. to TRBS 2153

Masterflex AG – Gelsenkirchen, November 2009

The Masterflex AG has recently launched a brand-new “A” hose series that complies with TRBS (Technical Rule for Operational Safety) 2153. Some of the well-tried Masterflex standard hose types have met the requirements lined out in the new directive years before it came into effect. The new “A” series products such as Master-PUR L-A or some hose types for the food industry will further complement the range of applications compliant to TRBS 2153.

The new technical rule which became effective in April 2009 replaces BGR 132 and introduces new criteria for wire-reinforced hoses used in potentially explosive atmosphere zones.

One of the major changes induced by TRBS 2153 is the classification of bulk materials into two categories:

    1. combustible bulk materials
    2. non-combustible bulk materials

Provisions and procedures concerning the transport of non-combustible bulk goods have basically remained the same. Yet, this is not true for the transport of combustible bulk materials given the fact that TRBS 2153 sets higher requirements in terms of electrostatic properties/conductivity of the materials used.

If wire-reinforced hoses are to be employed in Zone 0/20, the user is required to carry out a specific hazard analysis. As before, it is recommended not to use hoses other than static dissipative models with a surface resistivity of < 10 to the 6 ohms. As to Zone 1/21, requirements have been tightened. Recommendations are to employ antistatic hoses with a surface resistivity of < 10 to the 9 ohms to convey combustible bulk goods. As compared to the previous regulation, the new technical rule does not introduce any significant changes as to Zone 2. It should be noted that TRBS 2153 is generally considered a mere recommendation. Users may deviate from the given provisions as long as they can prove the effectiveness of their solution.

  • New High Performance HART® Communicator from GE…

    … Is Also A Calibrator

Combines communication, configuration and multi-function calibration in a single instrument

The hand-held DPI 620 advanced multifunction calibrator from GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies now incorporates full HART® capability, making it the only combined HART communicator and calibrator currently on the market. The rugged and compact instrument, which is weather-proofed to IP 65, incorporates the latest application software and contains a complete library of registered HART device descriptions to support more than 1000 sensors. Upgrades may be simply downloaded free-of-charge, from the GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies website. Offering so many functions and features within one portable instrument, the DPI 620 has application in the oil and gas, power generation, utilities and process industries, as well as in the laboratory and on-plant.

As Mike Shelton, product manager at GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies, explains, “Unlike competitive HART communicators which can only be used for configuration, commissioning and maintenance, the new DPI 620 is also recognized as one of the most accurate and versatile calibration systems available. Consequently, plant engineers and technicians can now considerably reduce the inventory of equipment they have to carry to perform maintenance and calibration tasks, as for the first time they can use a communicator which is also a calibrator.”

Lighter and smaller than competitive communicators, the new communicator/calibrator, with its full colour, high resolution touch interface, has a large internal memory, allowing it to store additional features such as procedure and datalog files. These can be transferred using USB, WiFi, memory stick or the instrument’s memory card, which can be up to 4GB, with its integral card reader. Features new to HART communicators include an integral 24V loop power supply to energise HART devices and loops and a menu-selectable 250 Ohm loop resistor, rather than a separate physical resistor, for use when a device is not connected or the loop is switched off.

The incorporation of a calibrator within the communicator means that there is no need to carry ancillary equipment such as multi-meters to measure mA when trimming sensors and there is naturally no need for secondary calibration equipment during sensor trim and device calibration, as the DPI 620 simultaneously sources and measures the primary variable, whether this be mA, pressure, V, mV ohms, frequency or temperature from RTDs or thermocouples.

The DPI 620 also has the capability to automate calibration procedures and document “As Found” and “As Left” results and can analyse device trends to support preventative maintenance programmes. It is available in a Windows CE version with standard Windows applications and file management and the computing power to view pdf files and jpeg images such as loop diagrams, data sheets, safety procedures, spreadsheets and to create text documents.

Naturally, the new communicator retains the world-class pressure generation and measurement capability of the existing DPI 620 calibrator. This means on-board pressure generation from vacuum to 100 bar pneumatic or 0 to 1000 bar hydraulic, at an accuracy of 0.005% FS.

  • LA 2009: Volkswagen Up! Lite Concept teases with practical, lightweight innovation

Volkswagen Up! Lite Concept – click above for high-res image gallery

Volkswagen has just taken the cover off an all-new concept called the Up! Lite, a sinister looking diesel hybrid that gets (according to VW) 70 mpg combined. As in both City and Highway. Impressive, even if that only ends up being 90 percent accurate. In fact, should Volkswagen decide to green light the unfortunately named Up! Lite, it would be the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly four seat vehicle on the planet. Again, if the Up! Lite comes to fruition, we’ll all be impressed. Interestingly, this concept isn’t the most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly car on earth is because another Volkswagen — the L1 from Frankfurt – is. But it only seats two.

Ready for the good parts? The aptly titled Up! Lite barely tips the scales at 1,530 pounds. There are Honda Goldwings flirting with that weight class. This svelteness is achieved via a mix of aluminum, lightweight steel and carbon fiber. For instance, the roof is made entirely from the expensive weave. And those amazing wheels consist of ten carbon-fiber spokes and an aluminum fairing. Nifty, no? The tiny, stylized winglettes replace conventional rearview mirrors and contain cameras instead of reflective glass. The same holds true for the interior mounted mirror, as has been replaced by a camera.

Up front, there’s an active air dam that opens up as needed. The extra cooling will help out the TDI hybrid drive lifted from the two-seater L1. This 800cc powerplant transmits power to the wheels using a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Even though the diesel engine is teeny, when coupled to the electric motor, the Up! Lite can reach 100 mph and hit 60 mph in 12 seconds. Not fast by any means, but good enough – especially for an ultra-high mileage vehicle. And it can haul stuff, too – including humans. Unlike the Up! Concept we saw in Frankfurt, the Up! Lite seats four people, and with the rear seats folded, it can haul 30 cubic feet of stuff. Not bad at all.

Overall, we’re pretty impressed by the looks and promise of the Up! Lite. In our estimation, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with blending a Honda CRX with a Volvo C30. Will the Up! Lite ever make it to production? Who knows. VW claims the first Up!s(?) will go on sale in 2011. We get the sense that any future decision will be based on how the two-door Up! does. But we get the feeling the Up! Lite might give the people more of what they want. Official press release after the jump.

  • CHART OF THE DAY: Dubai Shows What A Property Plunge Really Looks Like

    button more charts
button chart prev button chart next

Here’s essentially what caused Dubai’s debt extravaganza to finally come to an end.

Far too much easy money flowed into Dubai during previous years, fueling a massive construction boom financed with debt. For awhile this debt looked sustainable to those involved because it was ostensibly backed by valuable property.

Yet when the global financial crisis hit, property prices fell in many parts of the world. Dubai property prices were hit especially hard.

As shown below by the skiing Emirati, Dubai property rates per square foot fell 45% from Q3 2008 to Q3 2009 according to Colliers International.

Thus just as many American’s went underwater on their mortgages due to the American property crisis, owing more to the bank than their house was worth, the same thing basically happened to the Nakheel property business of the Dubai state-owned conglomerate Dubai World.

Combined with near-term cash flow constraints, this finally forced Dubai World to admit to its creditors that it would not be able to meet all of its debt obligations.
