  • Great Samsung Omnia 2 ad should be on TV

The Samsung Omnia 2 is coming to US very soon, and looking at our search traffic there is some excitement for the device.  The above is a promotional video for the device which not only shows the UI, but also the potential uses for the device, and looks a lot more fun than the typical fruity ad.

Hopefully the device will get a good push by Verizon, where the original Omnia has been quite a successful device.

  • VIDEO: Formula for Safety? Abu Dhabi Police unveil the F999

Abu Dhabi Police F999 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Wednesday evening before the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last month, crowds gathered along the Corniche, Abu Dhabi’s seafront boulevard. Two police cars sped down the road, swerved to a stop, an officer got out, pulled out his gun and began opening fire at a masked man pulling a checkered flag off a formula racing car. A driver climbed into the cockpit and drove off down the closed-off street to the applause of the gathered crowd as a marching band played on and a helicopter flew overhead. The point? Why, to promote road safety, of course!

The F999 – a formula racer decked out with emergency lights on the rear wing and police livery – is a project of the Abu Dhabi Police, and could very well be the fastest police car the world has ever seen. It’s part of a public awareness campaign that sought to capitalize on the fever that swept the gulf emirate leading up to its first F1 race. The F999 is only the most recent in a slew of special police vehicles in the emirate that has recently included a police-spec Nissan GT-R, Chevrolet Camaro and a customer chopper, to name just a few. It’s Abu Dhabi’s way of getting people excited about road safety, and while it may seem counterintuitive to the rest of us, it’s certainly garnered its fair share of attention. Follow the jump to watch video footage of the F999’s unveiling and read more in the press release. Thanks for the tip, Ali!

  • Caveman Thanksgiving: Prehistoric Man Roasted Birds Too

New findings, published in the October issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science, indicate early Europeans enjoyed a much broader diet than first suspected. We have known for a long while that early man hunted big game such as mastodons, now prehistoric bone findings show that early man also hunted and cooked game fowl.

The 202 bones, belonging to a species of diving ducks, and were found at Bolomor Cave near the town of Tavernes in Valencia, Spain. The ducks date to around 150,000 years ago, and seem to have been eaten with bad table manners.

  • Five Reasons to Be Thankful This Year

It’s been a good year for criminal justice reform, and we’ve seen groundwork laid for even more advances in the months ahead. I’m feeling thankful for all of the incredible activists I’ve had the pleasure of working with this year – there are so many talented, dedicated people fighting for reform in our criminal justice system that something’s gotta happen. Thanks to the change.org community for making 2009 great.

Here are five advances in criminal justice reform to be thankful for this year:

    1. Drug Reform – There’s an energy around drug war reform that we haven’t felt in years. Massachusetts became the 13th state to decriminalize marijuana. The American Medical Association stepped back last month from its drug war rhetoric. The positive steps this year are too many to count, but Ethan Nadelmann recaps ’em pretty well here.

    2. Exonerations – The steady drumbeat of men and women walking out of prison based on DNA and other evidence of their innocence continued in 2009. Eighteen people have been exonerated so far this year through DNA tests, many more through other evidence. Reforms to prevent wrongful convictions — changing eyewitness identification practices, interrogation protocol and the use of informants — moved forward nationwide. This week at the Innocence Project, we asked five exonerees what they’re thankful for this year. Here’s what they said.

    3. Alternatives to Incarceration – The recession turned out to be a blessing in disguise for prison reform, and this year short-on-cash became the enemy of tough-on-crime. A Hawaii judge is trying short, sure sentences. A North Carolina town cut crime without prison. Michigan is reducing its prison population.

  • Happy Thanksgiving From The Nurse Practitioner’s Place

I hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving holiday. I am eagerly waiting for the turkey to get finished and am spending time with family. Mike is spending Thanksgiving on the Naval base in Pensacola. I am so proud of his serving his country. Ciara is spending Thanksgiving with me today too. I don’t get enough time with her and will enjoy every minute. Brenton and Krista and baby Clayton are spending the holiday with her parents.

I received some awesome news the other day. I have been accepted for the National Health Service Corp’s student loan payback. I will work for the next two years at a job I already love and get $50,000 paid off my loans. I am waiting for the deposit so that I can pay it to Sallie Mae. I can apply for an additional year extension and get some more paid off as well. How great is that!!! If you work in a rural area and haven’t applied, do it now. They are not taking into consideration the HPSA score during this time frame and the application is much shorter now.

The office is getting very busy and am attempting to stay ahead of the never ending paperwork. One of the other branches is now getting their expansion done and we are next on the list. We will be building from the ground up and I can’t wait for it to be done. We are tripping over each other in the office and there is only one bathroom in the office for everyone. Makes for interesting times! I am getting the week of Christmas off and am only having to use three days of comp time to do it. I love getting four day weekends as we get the Friday after a holiday off if it falls just right.

Have a safe holiday everyone and I hope that you all stop by to say hello soon!

  • Who will succeed Mullaly at Ford? It’s never too early to start handicapping

When Alan Mulally arrived at Ford Motor Company three years ago, the Blue Oval was in bad shape. New product wasn’t exactly pouring in and the company’s cash hoard was steadily shrinking. And word on the street is that the corporate culture at Ford was in as much trouble as the product lineup, making change difficult. Now in 2009, it appears Mulally has done the near impossible, turning around Ford’s product lineup while supposedly positively altering FoMoCo’s corporate culture.

For all of Mulally’s success, there is one problem: he’s 64 and can’t continue to run the company forever. And although Mulally has given no signals of separating from Ford any time soon, industry insiders are already speculating on who will become his successor. The four names that continue to come up are Ford Americas President Mark Fields, global marketing boss Jim Farley, manufacturing whiz Joe Heinrich and Ford Europe savior Lewis Booth.

The Detroit Free Press feels the early money is on Fields. The Harvard grad has been with Ford for 20 years, and he’s lead some high profile success stories. He turned around Mazda and is currently piloting Ford North America in the midst of what appears to be a substantial product renaissance. Farley has an advantage in that he came to Ford from Toyota/Lexus and is seen by many as a real up and comer.

By many accounts, Heinrich is a bit of a manufacturing genius. The Harvard Business grad came from General Motors, where he became the company’s youngest ever Plant Manager at age 29. Booth has the longest resume and arguably the most examples of success. He appears to have consistently met and exceeded expectations everywhere he has been, including Mazda, Ford Asia Pacific and Ford South Africa. Booth is different from his fellow executives in that he is the only one who isn’t in his 40s.

We have no earthly idea who would become the next head of Ford, and we’re guessing that we’re at least a couple years away from finding out. We’re OK with that, because this Mulally guy appears to know what he’s doing.

  • Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Today is the day that I used to spend with my Grandparents, every year.  My Grandpa passed away about 30 years ago and my Grandma passed in January 2006.  God please rest both of their souls.

Today is a sad day for me because I am not at their house this year, and haven’t been for the past 4 years.  But, today is also a happy day because for the last couple of years I have been at my brother’s house, and today I will be again, with my Parents.  It has become a new tradition and I love it!

My brother has nine kids and it is fun, fun, fun at their house.  My sister-in-law is one of my favorites and I love love love my nephews and nieces, so that makes it all the better.

Thanksgiving is the time of year we are suppose to reflect and think about what we are grateful for.  Although I do not believe that we should create a holiday so people can think of what they are thankful for, people really do reflect.  I think it has to do with the name.  If we called it Pilgrim’s Day, we probably wouldn’t reflect.

Personally, I have made it a daily habit (every morning, noon, night, and in between) of considering what I am grateful for.

As I was traveling to my destination yesterday, I contemplated on what I am thankful for, besides the everyday stuff like the air I breath, the eyes I see with, the legs I walk on, my possessions, my home, family, and friends I get to hug.  And here is what I came up with.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO ONLY CALL ME WHEN THEY NEED ME.

The reason I thought of this was because I have certain friends and brothers that call me for specific things.  They never call because I they miss me, they wonder how I am doing, or because they want to hang out with me but they call when they need me to do something for them or they have problems and they need my help.

Now let me finish before you start making statements about my statements (giggle).

Okay, I am grateful for them because it reminds me that my love and my willingness to help are unconditional.  When I give I do not expect or need something in return or I do not give because they give to me.  My belief that to love and give is not a bargain, it is free.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY MOM AND HER NEED TO CONTROL MY EVERY MOVE.

As I grew up, my Mom and I fought, all the time, until I was about 35 (ten years ago).  Well, it tapered off when I was 35 and slowly decreased to nearly not even an argument.

The reason we fought was because she was/is always telling me what to do from what to wear, how to wear it, how to wear my make up, how to drive, what route to take, what to say, how to say it, how to raise my son, and just how to be.

You are probably asking why on earth would you be grateful for that?  I am grateful for that because her incessant need to do this does not disturb me a bit.  What use to drive me nuts (the kind of nuts that I never wanted to be around her and/or I would constantly badger her), now is my acceptance and love for the way she is.

This is huge for me!  I am so very grateful for her and the way she is and the way I am because it helps me realize, it takes two.  I was getting angry and fighting with her because of her constant instruction (I called it nagging) and when I was able to change and start reacting differently, or not reacting, we have become best friends.

I have become the type of person, with my Mom, that doesn’t have to hate her until she acts the way I want her to act.  My love is unconditional, meaning I do not need her to act a certain way toward me for me to love her.

Looking at these two points, that I am grateful for, really helps me see how far I have come.  I have always preached that, “If we are unhappy then we have to do something about it.”  It is so true and I also have always preached that, “We are in charge of and responsible for our thoughts, feelings, actions, and attitudes.”

What I want is to give love and support unconditionally.  This is important to me because I don’t want to expect anything in return.  Many people say this, I probably did too, and don’t really mean it or don’t do it.

I want to be like Jesus!  He loved and gave to those in need.  He did not give to those who only gave to him, and I am grateful for those people (My Mom, brothers, friends, and strangers)  who give me the opportunity to be Christ like in my behavior.

    Oh yeah,

I AM GRATEFUL FOR JESUS AND THE LOVE HE OFFERS YOU, MY FAMILY, AND ME!

    AND

I AM GRATEFUL FOR HEAVENLY FATHER AND THE LOVE HE GIVES YOU, MY FAMILY, AND ME!

HAPPY HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND GOD BLESS AMERICA THE LAND OF THE BRAVE AND THE HOME OF THE FREE!!!

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING AND DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN AND BE PLAYFUL.

  • Pie Guy: Web Apps as Viable Alternatives

Pie Guy is an excellent little game that’s causing a small stir among developers. The game has completely bypassed the App Store and is available to download, right now, as a Web App.

It’s a cute 8-bit-era game with deliciously retro graphics that clones Pacman with a pie-themed twist. Eat the pies, don’t get caught by the cooks, and try to beat your high-score. The game can be installed for free simply by visiting http://mrgan.com/pieguy/ on your iPhone’s browser.

The surprising thing is that all of this was achieved without the App Store. I’ve never come across an iPhone web app that feels so much like a native app. From the install process, to the icon and graphics, the attention to detail is impressive.

Admittedly, Pie Guy is no Rolando, but nevertheless it’s just the sort of 99 cent app I’d expect to find riding high in the App Store charts. Except it’s not in the App Store — Pie Guy is free from the constraints and anguish of Apple approvals and it’s just as polished and professional as we’d expect, but perhaps rarely find, from a native premium app.

What’s amazing is seeing what has been achieved without the App Store. A great user experience and a great product, all without running natively. Plus, it even works offline, despite being a web app. It’s worth noting though Pie Guy is iPhone 3GS only, the app apparently takes advantage of the significant improvements Apple made to WebKit performance on the device.

Of course, iPhone web apps are nothing new. Way back when, before the glorious mess that is the App Store, Jobs announced that developing on iPhone was effectively as simple as creating a web site.

After a rather disgruntled reaction from the dev community, and much purported rushing on Apple’s part, we ended up with the App Store. The very notion of web apps, on the other hand, seemed to get tossed aside in the free-for-all gold-rush that ensued.

Many months later, attention is beginning to swing back around to the untapped potential of web apps. It may be that developers are looking for a route to take their concepts to users without running the rejection gauntlet that is Apple’s app approval process. However, it’s also likely that developers want to take advantage of those handy WebKit performance improvements on the 3GS.

Earlier this week on Twitter, David Kaneda, a WebKit developer, claimed, “I could write a pretty competitive Tweetie clone, pretty quickly.” Loren Brichter, developer of iPhone Twitter-client Tweetie, promptly responded by saying, “I dare you.” What resulted from the ensuing exchange was a coder battle that may go some way in illustrating the real potential of WebKit, with Kaneda already producing promising results.

In the meantime though, users are caught between a somewhat chaotic App Store and a predominantly lackluster selection of web apps. There’s clearly room for improvement in both arenas and it’ll be interesting to see what developers manage to squeeze out of WebKit in the coming months.

  • RED THURSDAY: European Markets Turn Into A Bloodbath

The European markets turned into a total debacle today. The Dubai default, and its effect on European banks, is the most-cited reason.

WSJ: European shares recorded their biggest one-day drop since April on Thursday, with banks leading a broad tumble for markets amid
worries about exposure to Dubai debt.

The pan-European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index closed down 3.3% at 239.85, a level not seen since early November.

The U.K. FTSE 100 index closed down 3.2% at 5194.13, the French CAC-40 index ended down 3.4% at 3679.23 and the German DAX index closed down 3.3% at 5614.17.

Enjoy the rest of the day off, and for the sake of the economy, please base your shopping decisions based on how rich you thought you were Wednesday, thank you very much.

  • MOG All Access Music Streaming Service to Launch on December 2

Music-streaming services aren’t exactly anything new, but it’s taken a few years to get to the point where they could really change the game. Despite not making too much money and even some services shutting down, there seems to be an endless stream of new products to take their places. One that has been generating some amount of hype lately is MOG All Access coming from the MOG music blogging network. The service is now set to launch on December 2 and it looks like it may be a worthy competitor for Spotify, which is yet to launch in the US.

The service has been shaping up for the past couple of months and, by the looks of it, will be one of the top streaming services out there. It has all the best features from other services, but it also has several interesting, new tools. The player is web-based and allows users to play any song in the catalogue, which looks to be extensive, as it has support from all the major labels, add them to their library, playlists, and so on, all the usual things.

It also has an interesting radio feature, not exactly something completely new, but with a couple of twists. It starts out as a radio station that plays songs just from the artist the users select. The users can jump to any song in the queue but, if they want a little diversity, they can start up s… (read more)

  • Bell Samsung Omnia 2 reviewed

MobileSyrup have published their review of the Samsung Omnia 2 for the Bell Canadian carrier.

    They concluded:

The Omnia II is a massive improvement from the original Omnia that Samsung launched last year. This could be that they’ve made some positive changes such as the increased screen size, put in Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional and fundamentally make a classier looking product. Not that this fact be a decision maker when you’re looking to purchase it, but the Omnia II is also the device that’s the “Official Mobile Device of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games”.

    .

    .

The only downside I found with the Omnia II is that it catches a great deal of fingerprints, so make sure you carry a cloth around with you or simply get a case for it.

The Samsung Omnia 2 will be coming to Verizon on the 2nd December. Read more at MobileSyrup here.
