  • HTC HD2 to join Korean “anti-iPhone front”

    100426_p10_SK

SK Telecom's new smartphone additions to counter KT's iPhone

The iPhone has been a quiet success in South Korea, selling around 500,000 units in 4 months on the smaller KT carrier there.  SK Telecom, who dominates the cell phone market there, is however not taking this lying down, and has promised to introduce a slew of attractive devices, including the HTC HD2.

Samsung, Korea’s biggest cell phone company, has taken KT’s adoption of the iPhone rather personally, and has withdrawn the supply of new handsets to the carrier, and even stopped supporting current handsets there, for example not releasing a Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the Samsung T*Omnia, called the Show Omnia on that network, where it only sold 40,000, while doing joint promotions for the same handset on SK Telecom, where the T*Omnia sold 470 000.

“The Show Omnia is an illegitimate son who can’t call his father, father,” said KT’s Chairman Lee Suk-chae, using the old Korean folklore of Hong Gil-dong, the Joseon Kingdom equivalent of Robin Hood, as a metaphor.

Despite iPhone’s popularity, SK Telecom still has a larger number of smartphone customers thanks to its vast line-up of premium handsets, and Samsung seems hell bent on assuring that things stay that way.

Since it released the iPhone in November last year, KT admits it has been experiencing “serious difficulties” trying to add wealth to its smartphone line-up, with Samsung Electronics and other major vendors channelling their products through SK Telecom. SK Telecom is said to have no plans to release the iPhone.

  • Cluedo 1.26.52 for Windows Mobile reviewed

Remember that old board game your parents would make you sit down and play sometimes when you have relatives round? Well, throw in some style, cartoony graphics and interesting gameplay and you’ve got CLUEDO for Windows Mobile.

  • Run the latest Opera Mini on Windows Mobile 2003

Before the trend for tiny screens started there were some great and also very snappy Windows Mobile 2003 devices.  Not all of them were upgraded to Windows Mobile 5 (and it usually made them slower).

Windows Mobile 2003 did not have the best browser however, which often meant the Java-based Opera Mini was installed.  Opera has recently released a native version of the same browser, which unfortunately will only install in Windows Mobile 5.0 and up devices.

Fortunately Smartphone Magazine’s Werner Ruotsalainen repackaged the CAB installer so that it works perfectly on devices running Windows Mobile 2003 and 2003SE.

Mobicomputing.com has published this video showing it running perfectly on a Dell Axim X50v PDA.

  • Hide Your IP Address and Surf Anonymously with UltraSurf

ultrasearch-icon [Windows Only] UltraSurf is a tool that hooks your web browsers up with a free anonymous proxy. It hides your true IP address. Why is that important? I found a good answer at about.com:

When connecting to the Internet, your home computer (or network router) is assigned a public IP address. As you visit Web sites or other Internet servers, that public IP address is transmitted and recorded in log files kept on those servers. Access logs leave behind a trail of your Internet activity. If it were possible to somehow hide your public IP address, your Internet activity would become much more difficult to trace.

UltraReach, the group behind the UltraSurf application, talks about a another good reason for their service. Their purpose is as follows:

UltraReach is the first company with a mission that offers Internet technology and service immune to the national Internet censorship in China. The outstanding performance of our service has made UltraReach Internet well known among the users who seek the Internet freedom in the censored country, and at the meantime attracted heavy attacks from Chinese Internet police.

In other words, UltraSurf allows users to get past internet censorship. I don’t know exactly how it works, but I’ve tried UltraSurf and so far I’m impressed with it.

It’s easy to use. Just download it, double click the EXE file to run it, then start surfing.

    ultrasurf-exe

Once it’s running, you’ll see a simple interface.

    ultrasurf-interface

It will also launch Internet Explorer and you can start surfing if you want to. If you don’t want to use Internet Explorer, just close it and use your other web browsers. You can also go into the settings and tell UltraSurf not to start Internet Explorer.

If you’d like to, you can check your IP address at whatismyip.com to find out what it is. You’ll see that running UltraSurf changes your address after it starts up.

    You can download UltraSurf here.

In the past, the writers here at Techie Buzz have shared some other surfing tips with you. Here are a few:

Are Web Proxy Servers Safe To Enter Passwords?
    How To Access Blocked Websites
How To Access Blogspot Blogs From China
Unblock and Access YouTube From China

I’ve also written about two free web browsers that let you surf anonymously.

    Xb Browser
    OperaTor Browser

    Techie Buzz Verdict:

UltraSurf is one of the easiest ways you can find to surf the internet with anonymous freedom. I can’t tell you if it can bridge the great Chinese firewall, but the authors of this program are dedicated to doing that.

    Techie Buzz Rating: 4/5 (Excellent)

  • Crapware Be-Gone… The New Symbol Of WP7S

Having the right look and feel on your Windows Phone can become hard when carriers love to add totally unnecessary crap on your device. Well… the next version of Windows Phones will not have any of those anymore, they will imagebecome a thing of the past. A member over at XDA found a little something that explains it as fallowed:

Regarding preloaded applications by OEM/MO: Requirements are much more strict in this regard now due to frequent end-user complaints about "slow, laggy, etc" Stock ROMs. I know every one of you reading this knows what I mean Preloaded App Requirements (which will be distributed as .xap) as follows:

    – Maximum of 6 preloaded applications on the device, not to exceed 60MB
    – All preloaded apps must pass Marketplace submission process (some extended APIs are available to OEM/MO so the process is slightly relaxed in that regard)
    – The application(s) and all future updates must be free of charge.
    – The apps must launch without dependency on network availability.
    – The apps must persist through a "hard reset".
    – The apps must be updatable and revocable (!!!!) through the Marketplace.
    – The apps must notify the user at first launch of any capabilities to be utilized and get user consent (to access compass, accelerometer, network, etc.)

This is simple great news for people on AT&T for example, the company that always has the most crapware filled devices. I guess this might make people a little more happy with Windows Phones, because your memory is not going to waste, and with carriars being lazy these days, we might see the end to stupidware.

    SATA
    ——————————sda (primer disco fisico)———— sda1, sda2, sda3,etc..
    ——————————sdb (segundo) ————————-sdb1, sdb2, sdb3,etc..
    ——————————sdc (tercero) —————————sdc1, sdc2, sdc3,etc..
    PATA
    ——————————hda (primer disco fisico)————- hda1, hda2, hda3,etc..
    ——————————hdb (segundo)————————- hdb1, hdb2, hdb3,etc..
    ——————————hdc (tercero)————————– hdc1, hdc2, hdc3,etc..

Comenzo a instalar.

  • Know Your System’s Details With Speccy [Hardware Analysis]

[Windows Only] Coming from the same guys who made CCleaner and Defraggler, this one called Speccy from Piriform sure takes a hit at being simple and doing just what it should. Speccy is a hardware information tool that scratches your system for details and lists down everything about your hardware in a neat and tidy interface.

For people using Windows, CCleaner has been a clear favorite when it comes to quick system maintenance. Falling in the same league, Speccy allows you to have a glance of all the system details swiftly without any fuss required at the user-end.

    greenshot_2010-04-26_01-17-31

The application caters to all aspects of hardware, from the CPU to Network to Graphics and whatever comes in between. There’s a summary page where you can see all the details in brief and then click through them to have them explained. If you’re the regular forum bird, Speccy can come in handy in a lot of situations where you need to hand over your system specs to another party, for Speccy allows you to take a ‘screenshot’ of your configuration and have it saved to a file. This screenshot is not a jpeg as many would have assumed. It is a .speccy file which you can send over to another party and can only be opened with the Speccy application. When opened, it will present a duplicate copy of configuration as snapped from your PC.

Like other Piriform apps, Speccy is available as an installer and a portable zip file which, again, can come in handy if you’re the de facto tech support for everyone around you!

Thanks to Lee at DownloadSquad for the hat tip!

  • Next2Me Receives Next Update

When you move to a new area or go out to vacation… finding places to eat or visit becomes a hard task, imagebut this application called Next2Me can help you. The application is a very complicated, easy to use application that uses your GPS to find things around you. It works a little similar to augmented reality on Android devices, but a lot less attractive and intuitive.

In a recent update, the application added some fixes and even brought in some new features:

I recently released version 1.2 of my latest App "Next2Me" to the US Windows Marketplace.

Next2Me uses GPS and shows you all available businesses around you from over 30 categories. You can view the results on a map, show detailed information. You can also call the target business, send the detail information to your friends by Mail or SMS or save the business to your contact list all by only one click!

And here is the latest BETA version of the upcoming Next2Me 1.3.

    [UPDATE]
You can now manually choose between miles and meters. And for all US and Candians, Next2Me is now searching for "Gas stations"

    [UPDATE]
I changed the GPS code a bit because some users get an exception on some devices.

    [UPDATE]
Again changed the GPS device detection.

    [UPDATE 04/25/2010]
    o RC1 released
o Next2Me languages: DE, EN, FR, NL
o A menu to tell Next2Me how to search for your GPS device (this will solve several issues, like the exception told by some users and the unwanted bluetooth dialog which is automatically poping up)

So, have fun with Next2Me and send me your suggestions, critics, etc.

You can download this application in Windows Mobile Marketplace or over at XDA-developers for free.

  • Marketplace performance – a developer talks

    marketplaceperformance

A big problem with for developers deciding whether its worth creating applications for the Windows Mobile Marketplace is the secrecy surrounding the actual performance of applications in the market.

Fortunately Chris Rae, a hobbyist developer, has decided to share his own experience and provide a bit of information and guidance for other developers.

    He writes:

Right now, I have two applications on Marketplace.

The first app I wrote was Carlos. This is a pretty simple app intended to help you keep track of where you parked your car, using either your GPS or some sort of text-based tag you write yourself (in case you parked underground or can’t be bothered waiting for a GPS fix).

My second app is Proximity. This is a fairly generic app intended to “do something near a given location”.

He notes that he spent about 270 hours on both apps together, and about $280 to develop the apps.

On the earnings from the apps he says:

To save you doing the math here – Microsoft take a 30% cut of the purchase price, so I’m left with 70%. This means that for Carlos I’ve made a total of around $280 since the end of January, and for Proximity I’ve made about $350 since mid-March. It’s hovering somewhere around the $10/day mark for each app now – around $500/month in total, although it’s obviously somewhat early to start giving out per-month figures.

Obviously more in the range of pocket money that a retirement fund, Chris compares this to similar android applications which make 50 times more in the same period. He notes however that competition is a lot more fierce on the Android and iPhone platforms, and require adaptations and investments such as learning new programming languages or buying new tools which he did not need to do to develop on his existing device.

Clearly it is up to developers to draw their own conclusions from the information provided (and make sure to read the full post here) but it is clear, given his investment in time and money, his apps will still be owning him money for some time, and I cant help but see it as a failure of Marketplace and Microsoft.

In my opinion Microsoft could have done a lot more to promote the service, but is clearly preoccupied with Windows Phone 7 to the detriment of Windows Mobile.

Do any other developers want to take the opportunity to share their Marketplace performance with others? Let us know below.

  • Best Icon Set I have Seen Yet!

    image

There are many graphic designers working hard to grab your attention with great looking graphics, but this one is my favorite. This theme was created by XDA member julianfx, who seems to have achieved something truly amazing with his new graphics. The icons are very general, they are made for the most popular Windows Mobile applications and functions, and all of them look amazing.

I would love to have this on my HD2, but since I do not know how to edit files and all of those things, I will have to wait till NRG finds the time to change his icons and add this(NRG if you are reading this, you have my vote to add this.) I do wish there was any easy way to add this to my phone without requiring a ROM flash.

If you cook ROMs or know how to add this to your device download it here.

  • HTC HD2 envy – TouchFlo3D for the iPhone

We know HTC’s Sense UI is pretty attractive, such that HTC even transplanted it onto Android.

Jailbreaking iPhone owners have however not been left out of the game, with quite a few HTC Sense themes for iPhone around. Here is another, which takes the hack even further, to include animated.

    Obsessionxyz writes:

To begin, YES i know there is tons of this modded theme here, but none has satisfied me, so I have rewritten the alot of codes and combined various javascripts to make this work. ok the theme now, it has a working animated flipclock, and animated weather, so far the same as others, but, this one you can actually tap on to update. which is the way i want it.

I have recreate all weather elements myself, and compare to the original (Weather Elements v3) the file size was huge, mine is only 5MB big, (the whole theme)

As for the animated flipclock, that also have i recreated the images. if you want to have the theme i will also create AM/PM images.

If you succumbed to the dark side, this hack which gives you a UI which is actually a bit more than a grid of icons may make you feel a bit more at home.

  • QVGA Windows Mobile 6.5 Lockscreen Skin

Windows Mobile base is well known to be very unattractive, and a lot of development power is undergone image everyday to bring Windows Mobile into the attractive ages. Well those development is mostly for the newer WVGA devices but this one is specifically for QVGA.

This is a Livven special that goes with the recently canceled GTX skin done by a friend of mine El Condor. The Skin remakes GTX’s look and design, with the all white slider and clock, and the transparent outlining and calendar.

The theme does not come with much details except it will only work with QVGA, but if requested he will make it capable with other screen resolutions.

Note it’s not final, which means the notification sliders have not been skinned, but they’ll show up with the default look. Otherwise it should be working fine on 6.5.3, although I’m not sure with 6.5. Please provide feedback telling me if it’s working.
