  • HTC applies for another tablet patent

    htctablet

Yesterday we posted about a hinge design which would be perfect for a dual screen device.  Today we are posting on another HTC patent application which demonstrates a method of splitting the screen of a tablet-like device by drawing a gesture from one bevel to another, and interestingly explicitly shows the Windows Mobile flag.

The patent is summarizes as below.

A method for generating multiple windows frames, an electronic device thereof, and a computer program product using the method are provided. In the present method, first, a touch trajectory generated by continuously touching a touch panel of the electronic device is detected, wherein the center of the touch panel is a display area, and a non-display area surrounds the display area. Then, whether the touch trajectory is started from one side of the non-display area and passed through the display area to be extended to another side of the non-display area is determined. If so, the display area is split according to the touch trajectory to display at least two windows frames. As a result, an intuitional and convenient method for generating multiple windows frames in the display area is provided, and the operation of the electronic device is made very convenient.

HTC is well known to have had plans for a tablet which they have since shelved.  With the current popularity of tablets it is almost certain HTC will revive their plans, and it is likely we will see much of this technology show up in these devices also.

  • Microsoft softening their stance on Copy and Paste in Windows Phone 7, plans ‘good’ implementation’

cutandpastemockup Previously we have heard many mixed messages regarding Copy and Paste in Windows Phone 7. Some member have been pretty strident about the lack of need for the technology, feeling their context sensitive one-click system was more than enough for most people.

At a DedvDays presentation in the Hague however program group manager Charlie Kindel acknowledged the howls of protest heard across the internet.

"We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear," said Kindel. "We look at this case and we will do the right thing,"

He said Microsoft was now working on a “good’ implementation of the copy-paste functionality in Windows Phone 7” although it is not clear if this will make it to the first release on devices.

The recently announced Garmin-Asus Nuvifone M10 has now been released widely in Asia.  The 3.5 inch WVGA Windows Mobile 6.5.3 device appears to be a pretty good device, only let down by its resistive rather than capacitive screen.

“The Garmin-Asus M10 is our answer to people’s need for a balance in the hectic Indian work-life scenario. The handset runs the new generation, much snappier Qualcomm 7227 600 Mhz chipset, 512 MB RAM and ROM, plus an addition 4 GB build in storage and expansion via microSD card.

    Luke Timmerman wrote:

The image of the double helix has captivated the public imagination for a long time. But biotechnology today actually requires what you might call a triple helix of money, people, and ideas, according to John Mendlein, the chairman of San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.

All three ingredients were in one place Wednesday night for Xconomy’s event on the 20-year outlook for the San Diego life sciences industry. About 175 people packed a commons at Biogen Idec’s San Diego campus to hear a panel discussion that featured Mendlein, Paul Schimmel of The Scripps Research Institute, Dan Bradbury of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and Rusty Gage of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

“We get to peer into the future,” Mendlein said in his opening remarks. “Everyone in this room is responsible for our collective future. It really is all in our hands.”

Yes, I know, it sounds like weighty stuff, and it is. But Mendlein reminded people not to take themselves too seriously with this crystal ball stuff: “If you have questions about the future, these three gentlemen have all the answers,” Mendlein deadpanned. “You can ask them what their company stock prices will be five years from now, or 10 years from now, or 20.”

Once these guys settled into a groove, they offered up a lot of fascinating insights. Here are some of the highlights, edited for length and clarity as always.

Paul Schimmel on why he left MIT in the late 1990s to come to Scripps:

“I had many wonderful years at MIT. It’s a big place. A great place. I was well-supported. But I wanted to go back to being a seed again. I wanted to go to a place that was smaller, that would support me, and in my case [that was] The Scripps Research Institute, where there was at least the illusion of a lot of resources. But where the structure was such that you could feel you were in a scientific playground, and could start from scratch again.”

“The difference for me between Cambridge and San Diego was, when I went to Cambridge, it was a different era, but many seeds had already grown. You were basically finding your way among all these trees and trying to get new trees established. Here, there were fewer big trees. In that sense, for me it opened up more creative possibilities. It forced me even to a greater extent, into self-reliance, and freedom of thought.”

  • 7Plus Puts Useful Windows Shortcuts Under One Hood

[Windows only]: I am a freeware freak and whenever I find a utility that adds something productive in my daily computer usage, I use it without giving a second thought. Yesterday, I came across 7plus a free utility which adds tons of features and shortcuts to speed up the normal workflow in Windows.

During installation, 7plus provides some basic settings which you can check and customize. This includes choosing the explorer windows, shortcut to create folders and various other mouse and keyboard shortcuts. Actually there are a whole lot of mouse shortcuts to consider and I did write some of them on paper.

Here is how the settings panel of 7plus look:

    7plus-program-settings

Some of the useful features of the application are as follows:

Copy Filenames with a shortcut key: You can copy filenames using the Alt + C keyboard shortcut. The normal way around is hitting F2, highlighting the file name and then pressing Control + C. 7plus saves you from 3 different keystrokes while copying filenames.

Copy paths as well as filenames: If you want to copy the path of the file, use Control + Alt + C. This comes handy, when you are designing something and have to frequently copy the exact path of a file.

Go back: Love this one. Just hold down right mouse button and click the left one to go back one window. You can double click on any empty area of Windows explorer to go a folder upwards.

Add FTP Details: The application also does some FTP job, just set up the FTP details in the program settings, select a file which you want to upload and press Control + U. The file will be sent to your FTP server from Windows explorer.

Clipboard Manager: We have earlier seen some nice clipboard managers for Windows, but with 7plus you don’t need to use them at all. Press Windows key + V and a clipboard manager opens with the last 10 entries stored and ready to be used.

Check out this small video screencast to understand how 7plus works:

For a full list of features, check out this project page. Thanks Ghacks

    Techie Buzz Verdict

7plus is an amazing little tool to tweak Windows the way you want. The program works with 32 bit as well as 64 bit editions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows7. It’s portable, doesn’t modify the registry and you can even use it from your USB drive on multiple computers. There is a small learning curve with the shortcut keys, but after using it for a while, you will love it.

    Techie Buzz rating: 4.5/5 (Excellent)

  • Information Technology 2010: M&A and Financing Outlook

    Michael Orbach wrote:

Cascadia Capital is optimistic that the resurgence of information technology M&A and financings in late 2009 and early 2010 will continue throughout the remainder of the year. The evidence for this activity is supported by the market data and the sentiment of cautious optimism expressed by the CEOs with whom we regularly collaborate as part of our “thematic” business model.

Under our thematic approach, Cascadia’s IT Practice has identified 11 technology themes. We build an ecosystem for each theme, comprising companies, financial sponsors, and potential transaction counter-parties.

There has been a material improvement in the number of IT M&A and financings in the third and fourth quarters of 2009, offsetting, to some extent, record weaknesses earlier in the year. Second half 2009 IT M&A spending increased 50 percent from the first half, as the markets saw an increase in valuations, with higher multiples returning. More specifically, deal activity in the global technology sector grew for the third consecutive quarter in Q4 2009. Deals done in the technology sector rose by 13 percent, to 553 in the quarter, compared with 488 in Q3 2009. Total deal value also quadrupled in Q4 2009 ($35.4 billion), compared with Q4 2009 ($9.2 billion). M&A in January 2010 alone show 83 completed deals, a healthy pace if considered a run rate for the remainder of the year.

Cascadia believes that the number of IT M&A and financings will gradually ramp up throughout 2010 from the economy-induced hiatus of 2008 and the first half of 2009. Recent M&A activity by major public company “aggregators” suggests that the market is re-emerging and will pick up momentum as 2010 unfolds.

Our view is that the strategic acquirers will stimulate the majority of M&A in 2010, as private equity still lacks leverage, with growth equity funding future M&A targets. The need to acquire leading technology companies to round out software and service offerings, rather than building these technologies and services in-house, will drive M&A. Additionally, stronger balance sheets, improving credit markets and market valuations will help to narrow bid-ask spreads. All of this will combine to improve prospects for strategic deal making over the next 12 months.

Here we assess 2010 prospects for two of Cascadia’s IT Practice themes:

    Governance Risk and Compliance

We believe that the Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) market is at an inflection point as regulatory changes and increased compliance requirements are forcing companies to look for enabling software and services to help manage their businesses. We also see that the market for GRC software and service companies is fragmented and ripe for consolidation; currently, there are at least 13 privately held GRC companies that have revenues in excess of $25 million. Several of the large consolidators are focusing on the GRC space and as 2010 unfolds, we expect that several of these acquirers will move to strengthen their presence in what continues to evolve into one of the most mission-critical software categories of the next decade.

In January 2010, EMC announced that it will acquire Archer Technologies to add IT-centric GRC capabilities to EMC’s RSA Security product line and position the company against infrastructure software competitors IBM, HP, CA, McAfee, and Symantec, who have, so far, remained …Next Page »

  • Review: Vlingo Plus v4.5 With SafeReader, Communicate Hands Free At Work Or Play

Vlingo has been around for a while. I remember it back when it was free for all, and it was a great way to drive. In fact, there were many BlackBerry users who used the BlackBerry for this very app. And it has grown, improved, and become a more versatile application. Simple use with the touch of a button. Let’s take a look…

Vlingo is available in the BlackBerry App World or from the Vlingo website itself. The description of Vlingo for those of you who have never heard of Vlingo is as follows:

Vlingo gives you the freedom to speak into to your BlackBerry in place of typing. Go hands-free, whether for work or for play.
NEW FEATURE: SafeReader – have your incoming text and email messages read to you while you are on the go!
    Use your voice to…..
    • send a text or email message to any contact
    • search the web using Google or Yahoo!
    • call a friend
    • update your Facebook or Twitter status
    • open native and 3rd party applications
    • Instant messengers: including BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), AIM, Yahoo, Windows Live
    • Virtually any application

I downloaded and installed Vlingo Plus which is only $19.99 on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 with 5.0. It installed quickly and easily. There’s an interactive set up during which Vlingo helps you set your shortcut key and also scans your contacts. Here’s an interesting thing to remember. I have two different gmails on my phone, both were synced, however only one has family in it. The Vlingo the default synced contacts, not all the ones in the book. So I had to be sure that both of my gmails were synced with the same contacts.

So after it’s set up, you can go into the options and personalize it, perhaps make changes to what you’d like. I’m going to walk you through the application first. Clicking on the icon brings up a page with three sections: What Can I Say? Tell A Friend..; and SafeReader.

What Can I Say? This section explains how you can control your phone with voice and gives you examples. You can do a web search by voice, Dial with the command Dial or Call which you can do by name or number, Facebook status in which you can update your status by voice, Twitter updates, email which is exclusive to the paid version, Note to Self, Open Applications such as Open Calendar, and another feature of the paid is to use it within other applications. So if you are in BlackBerry Messenger you are able to hold the button down and say what you want to say and it will be spell it out for you to enter. Now the new feature: Hear incoming messages, turn on Vlingo SafeREader to hear the first 30 words of text or email messages read to you.

Tell A Friend lets you email a friend to tell them about Vlingo and how it’s really been a value to you.

SafeReader is the last part of the page which allows you to turn it on or off.

Clicking on your options key brings up Help and Online Support, as well as Options. I’m going to take you through the options next.

There are six sections in options. The first is General. This section is where you choose which key will be the voice key, the voice key behavior of Anywhere or Only On Vlingo Home, the language which can be US or UK English, Profanity Filtering which can be set to on or off, Vlingo Everywhere Behavior which can be set to Show Popup or Paste Immediately, Location Awareness which can be set to on or off, and how you want your contacts sorted.

The next section is Audio. In this section you can set Alert Tones to On or Off, Volume to Quiet, Normal, or Loud, Text to Speech Voice which can be set to Male or Femaile, TTS Playback which can be set to Off, Brief, or Full, and TTS Playback for Bluetooth.

The Applications section has SafeReader which can be set to SMS and Email, SMS Only or Email Only, the Web Search engine which you choose either Yahoo or Google, Note to Self in which you can Add Memo, Add Task, Send SMS to Self, or Send Email to Self. It also includes Twitter in which you set your login credentials, Auto-Dial which can be turned on or off, and Auto-Dial Behavior which can be set to Less Frequent, Standard, or more Frequent.

Next is Tagline. In this you can set the Email Tagline, SMS Tagline, and Facebook Tagline to be on or off. The Network Section has Auto Configure which you can Run Test. You can set the connection type to Direct TCP, BIS, or MDS.

Save your settings and you’re ready to use Vlingo. I tested this out with text, emails, in applications, and allowed the SafeReader to read. It works amazingly. For calling and texting it is so easy. You hold the key down, you see it listening and you speak into the phone as you hold the key down. I say “Call John” and it brings up John as it calls. I try holding the key down and say “Message to John, Message ‘What time did you say?’” and Vlingo types it up and I only have to hit send.

Using Vlingo in applications is easy too. I’m in the BlackBerry Messenger, I hold the key down while in chat and say what I want to answer and it sets to paste. SafeReader works great too.

Anyone could benefit from Vlingo, while you’re driving, while you’re working, in a hurry and want to save time while writing, it’s easy and fast. Save time and make things convenient. It’s a five star application and for the convenience it’s great. It didn’t slow my phone down at all. It’s easy to use, and the use of one side key of your choice makes it so easy to use. I can’t tell you how much of a convenience this application makes. Versatile and convenience beyond description,  you’ll have to try this out.

PROS: Understands and types, I didn’t have to use correcting as long as I spoke slow. It read my messages and let me use it in any application.

CONS: Only having to paste in other applications, and the fact that if you use syncing with your emails, and have a default, those are the contacts it will recognize.

Its starting to look the the Metro UI that Microsoft is so proud of in Windows Phone 7 is in fact the next direction for desktop Windows also.

Chinese blog LiveSino.net have some leaked pictures of what they claim to be the next beta release of Internet Explorer 9, apparently set to be released in May 2009.  The user interface features so-called “chrome-less” web pages and a very minimalistic user interface based on the very narrow task bar, and includes the iconic cut off text and symbols of the ZuneHD and Windows Phone 7 series.

Now we can not be sure this is not an AFD mock-up but if real it could do a lot for the cohesiveness of the Windows ecosystem.

As mentioned earlier, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 UI seems to have caught the imagination of many, likely because its pretty unique. So unique in fact that Microsoft has applied for a patent for the design.

The September 2008 patent is summarized as such:

A panoramic graphical user interface includes a contiguous background and a collection of mixed-media content objects. The contiguous background includes one or more space-orientating graphical elements and is sized to fit within a first dimension of a display and to extend beyond a second dimension of the display. The collection of mixed-media content objects are anchored over the contiguous background. The collection of mixed-media content objects are arranged to fit within the first dimension of the display and arranged to extend beyond the second dimension of the display.

I guess that means it wont be showing up on an iPhone any time soon ;)

It’s all-too-easy to define this partition on the small side, as we believe we’ll get rid of Bootcamp and move back to our Mac, at a later date. However, we believe that if you’re going to go through the hassle of configuring a Windows partition, installing Bootcamp and then Windows, you’re a pretty determined Windows user.

For that reason, you’ll need the flexibility of re-configuring your Windows/Mac partitions, after you’ve created Bootcamp, installed Windows and have dual-booted between both operating systems. Normally you can’t alter your Windows partition from the Mac and vice-versa.

Paragon CampTune for Mac 7.5 is a tool you can use to create a bootable CD that quickly and easily enables you to re-configure your Windows/Mac Bootcamp partition. Allocate more space to the Windows partition or remove some and give it back to the Mac partition.

We’ve got the full version of Paragon CampTune for Mac v7.5, worth $19.95, in the V3.co.uk Software Store, until midnight GMT Saturday.
