  • Google confirms Froyo launch has begun, manual update available

Chances are you already know about Google’s decision to roll out Froyo only days after they said they’d be rolling it out in a “few weeks.”  But if you own a Nexus One (the first device slated to receive the update) and have yet to receive your update, there’s a reason for that.  Apparently this roll-out will be “slow” and “staggered,” which means that while it will eventually make its way to all N1s it may not happen right away.  According to TechCrunch, it appears that members of the press who received N1s at the Nexus One launch event may be receiving updates first, but one thing is for certain, Google has officially confirmed “The roll out to Nexus One devices has begun!”

Now, you don’t think we’d leave those of you who haven’t received the update without a solution do you?  Thanks to the folks over at Phandroid, we’ve got instructions on how you can manually update your N1 to Android 2.2.  Of course, these directions come with the obvious warnings such as: install this update at your own risk, and please (for the love of G-d!) make sure you backup your device first.  Also, according to AndroidandMe this update is only confirmed as working on T-Mobile N1s, and if your N1 is currently rooted you need to get it back to stock.  Alright, enough of the formalities, go get your Froyo on!

Here are the directions (courtesy of Phandroid):

    1. Download the Android 2.2 firmware for the Nexus One – here
    2. Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]
    3. Power down your Nexus One
    4. Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.
    5. A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” and press the “Power” button.
    6. When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.
    7. From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.”
    8. When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up.

For those of you who plan to wait it out (and I can’t blame you if you do) here’s a walkthrough thanks to the folks at AndroidCentral, to give you a taste of what you can expect to receive, in time.

    {Widget type=”youtube” id=”531mrieo2p4″ }

If you decide to manually update, let us know how it goes.  If you don’t, let us know about that too!

  • Diesel engines are starting to gain traction in India

2010 Toyota iQIn India, diesel engines are becoming more popular as more carmakers penetrate the market and bring new technologies. Currently, petrol models dominate the Indian car market, which rose by 25% to 1.9m vehicles last year.

In fact, petrol cars represent 75% of the cars that India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki sells. Historically, diesels sales have been pulled down by high maintenance and premium pricing. Nonetheless, the proportion of diesel sales has been rising steadily from 15% in 2006 to 25% in 2009, due to improved technology and fuel efficiency.

India’s top two carmakers, Maruti Suzuki (with 54% market share) and Hyundai (18%) said that they intend to invest more on building and marketing diesel cars to cope with demand. Meanwhile, Honda and Toyota plan to develop diesel engines for their passenger cars. Honda, which offers only petrol-powered vehicles in India, will soon have a small diesel engine for the market.

Toyota will soon roll out a diesel version of Corolla Altis – which would be its first diesel-driven passenger car in India. Honda Siel’s marketing chief, Jnaneswar Sen, told India’s Economic Times that there’s a need to come up with a diesel engine.

The company has yet to settle on a timeline for its launch. Toyota disclosed that 90% of its sales are diesels, but that these are not in passenger cars but rather, in utility vehicles and SUVs.

Production of diesel cars has been ramped up by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, General Motors and Ford. They intend to take advantage of a rising demand for diesel cars, which consumers consider to be more fuel efficient and environment friendly than petrol-driven cars.

  • Salón del Automóvil Ecológico de Madrid 2010: Hyundai

    salonmadridecologico_012.jpg

  • CDC Finds Public Pools Highly Unsafe

Public Pools CDC Safety FactsCDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) made public the study about public pools, they checked plenty of public pools across the country and the results are quite bad. They found that 12,5% of pools are totally unsafe to use.

This information comes handy as summer comes and more people are in danger. We alweays knew that pools are a bit unsafe but people usually dismiss this fact. This time CDC already took action and closed 12% of public pools already. The biggest problem was in kids pools where chlorination was improper and in water fecal traces was found, this is highly unsafe as kids drinks from that water many times. Chlorine
levels are low as urine is lowering chlorine as it contains nitrogen what lowers it. Chlorine is very important when it comes to infections, it kills bacteria and have other important role in keeping pools safe.

CDC is taking action, as this is very important and pools causes 90% of summer infections. If you want to stay safe choose expensive places as they have better pools and highly monitored pools.

  • The ECCC Issues a Landmark Decision on JCE III

    by Kevin Jon Heller

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia has just held that JCE III, otherwise known as “extended” joint criminal enterprise, did not exist under customary international law during 1975-1979, the period over which the ECCC has temporal jurisdiction. The decision is a stunning rebuke to the ICTY, which invented — literally out of thin air — that form of JCE in Tadic, its first decision.

In a nutshell, JCE III holds a defendant who participates in a common plan to commit an international crime responsible for the commission of unplanned crimes that he was aware might be committed.  Consider, for example, a group of soldiers who pillage a captured village pursuant to a common plan.  If one of the soldiers commits rape while pillaging the village, any of his comrades will be guilty of both pillage and rape if they foresaw the possibility that rape would be committed during the pillaging.

JCE III has always been controversial, with scholars criticizing it on two basic grounds.  First, they have pointed out that JCE III violates the principle of culpability because — as the example above indicates — it holds a defendant responsible for a crime even though he did not commit its actus reus and did not possess its necessary mens rea.  The ICTY has even held that JCE III results in the defendant’s conviction as a principal, not as an accessory, despite overwhelming domestic practice to the contrary.

Scholars have also argued that JCE III does not exist under customary law, contrary to the ICTY’s assertion in Tadic.  There is no question that JCE I and JCE II, “basic” and “systemic” JCE, are consistent with customary international law; both are amply supported by WW II-era international and domestic jurisprudence.  But the same cannot be said of JCE III: none of the WW II-era cases applied it, and an equivalent mode of participation exists in very few national jurisdictions.

The ECCC’s decision addressed the second criticism, agreeing with critics that the ICTY invented JCE III.  It’s a long analysis and highly technical, so I won’t try to summarize here.  But it’s absolutely devastating, leaving Tadic in smoldering ruins.  Readers interested in JCE should definitely give the decision a read.

I have to admit, I feel more than a little vindicated by the ECCC’s decision.  I wrote a long motion in the Karadzic case arguing that customary international law does not permit a defendant to be convicted of a special-intent crime such as genocide via JCE III.  The motion relied on much, if not most, of the same international and domestic jurisprudence that the ECCC cites in defense of its decision.  The ICTY refused to address the substance of the motion, holding that the JCE III issue was not “jurisdictional” and could be dealt with in the final judgment if Karadzic was convicted.  The ECCC’s decision indicates the absurdity of the ICTY’s position.

I have always been skeptical of the ECCC, particularly concerning its ability to generate quality jurisprudence.  I am delighted to say that the early returns indicate my skepticism might have been unwarranted.

  • Is This the Droid Heir Apparent?

Hi there!  We noticed you staring at that picture up above.  You like?  Yeah, that is presumably the follow up to the Motorola Droid from Verizon.  It looks great, doesn’t it?  Would you like to hear the rumored specs?  They’re just about the nicest we’ve seen on an Android phone to date.  Okay, here goes…

As we looked around a bunch of posts within Howard Forums, the best we can piece together is this:

    • 4.1″ TFT FWVGA screen
    • Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 Processor
    • 2GB -8GB internal memory
    • Android 2.1 (Eclair), possibly 2.2 (Froyo) upon launch
    • MOTOBLUR (BLUR community chat)
    • 8 MP camera with 720p video recording
    • 1080p output via HDMI port
    • Roughly 9mm in thickness

We’ve seen July listed a few times as the release time frame so Android 2.2 could make the cut.  However, based on Motorola’s history, we’re guessing it’s Android 2.1 at launch.  As for the name of this thing, you guess is as good as ours at this point.  We’ve heard Droid 2, Droid Xtreme, Shadow, Droid Shadow, and a couple others.  Of all the names we’ve seen tossed around, Shadow seems to stick the best. On the other hand, the “Droid” label is clearly marked in the picture.   Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out, won’t we?

  • Charles Djou Wins House Seat in Honolulu

Republican Charles Djou has won the special election for the US House of Representative seat in Honolulu’s 1st Congressional District.

Charles Djou took 67,274 votes or 39.5 percent while the Democrats state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa took 31 percent and 28 percent for former Rep. Ed Case.

This is the first time in 20 years that a Republican will represent Hawaii in Congress. Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou will represent the district where President Barack Obama grew up.

“This is a momentous day. We have sent a message to the United States Congress. We have sent a message to the national Democrats. We have sent a message to the machine,” Djou said. “The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people.”

The Democrats believe that the success of Charles Djou in Hawaii will be short-lived. Djou will only serve through the remainder of 2010, and another election will be held in November for the next term. But the Republicans see this victory as a powerful chance to get ahead in the November elections.

  • Volvo XC90 recalled in China due to a defective fuel line

2010 Volvo XC90In China, Volvo Car Corp. is recalling 571 XC90 SUVs due to a defective fuel line, according to media reports. The website of China’s quality regulator, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ), indicated that the recall covered 571 imported 3.2-liter XC90 and 2.5T XC90 luxury SUVs built between October 26, 2009 and December 21, 2009. Volvo’s recall notice pointed to a manufacturing defect in the fuel pressure line that may result in a fuel smell and/or fuel seepage. Because the fuel line is under constant pressure, seepage can develop into a greater leakage within a short period of time. The worst that can happen is that the leakage may lead to a fire at the right front wheel house area if there’s an external ignition source. Those affected are asked to call an authorized Volvo dealer to have the fuel pressure line inspected or even replaced. They may also call Volvo at 400-678-1200, or contact the GAQSIQ.
