Buick marketing director confirms new compact sedan, crossover
Buick Real GS Concept
Following the LaCrosse and the upcoming Regal, Buick’s revolution will continue with what marketing director Craig Bierley calls a “timeless proposition of understated luxury.” Bierley says that Buick is working on a compact sedan and a new compact crossover.
The compact sedan will be built on the Chevrolet Cruze platform but with unique styling and a different powertrain lineup. Bierley says that “you’d be hard pressed to know they’re on the same architecture.” We recently caught a glimpse of the upcoming compact sedan, which is to be called Buick Excelle.
Click here to get prices on the 2010 Buick LaCrosse.
Up next will be a compact crossover due out in 2012. The model will share its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and the Cadillac SRX.
Buick’s current lineup of two large sedans, the Lucerne and LaCrosse, and a large SUV, the Enclave, technically compete with 14 percent of new models in the U.S. market. When the new Regal, Excelle and the compact SUV hit the lineup, Buick estimates to compete with 46 percent of the market.
By 2014-2015, expect a couple of new models, expanding Buick’s presence in some 60 percent of segments.

McCormick CEO, UT Alum Judges Advertising Student Campaign Competition
KNOXVILLE — Seniors in the UT Knoxville College of Communication and Information’s (CCI) advertising campaigns class recently got a taste of the real world that was a bit “spicier” than they expected.
During the semester, student teams were tasked with creating an advertising campaign for McCormick & Co., the nationwide spice and flavorings retailer. But when the teams presented their campaign projects, the team of judges included McCormick CEO Alan D. Wilson and other executives from the company.
Wilson, a 1980 CCI alumnus, said the work of the student teams was outstanding and quite professional.
“I was very impressed with the way the students did the research, came up with some really creative ideas, explored the heritage of the brand and then had some great recommendations on how to communicate to the target audience,” Wilson said. “They had the ability to identify how they were going to do it, and they did a great job.”
Kate Kopperman of the student team “Innovative Expressions Inc.,” which won the competition, said the class provided a wonderful professional opportunity.
“The campaigns class is a great idea. It helps us add everything we’ve learned from all our classes together into one and gives us a great real-world experience,” Kopperman said. “I think it’s awesome that we could present our campaign proposal to real clients like the CEO of McCormick. It’s a great benefit that UT offers us.”
Brandon Tillman of team “EITC Interactive” said the presentation wasn’t easy, but it was worthwhile.
“Presenting to the executives was very hard, very nerve-wracking, but it went well and it was a great experience,” Tillman said. “It meant a lot to be judged by the McCormick executives, because we talk with teachers every day, but this was a chance to talk to high-level business leaders.”
Getting a glimpse of the “real world” is what it was all about, said Garrett Cody Banniza of team “Mindful Dexterity.”
“Going through this process and bringing everything you’ve learned through your entire college career together just for this event, it really gets you geared up for the real world,” Banniza said. “You know where you’re going and you know that when you get there, you can actually accomplish these tasks that you’ll be given.”
McCormick CEO Wilson agreed that preparation is the key to success.
“UT prepared me extremely well for the real-world experience,” Wilson said. “It gave me the confidence to go out and make a career. I learned certainly the technical skills, but the important thing is that I learned how to learn. That’s what is so important in any role — being able to adapt to the situation and the challenges. UT certainly prepared me well for that,” he said.
Wilson said the idea to judge the competition came from Andrew Foust, a McCormick & Co. executive and fellow CCI alumnus who took part in the advertising campaigns competition in 2004.
“[Foust’s] team actually won it, and Andrew wanted to give back,” Wilson said. “I thought it was a great idea.”

Reid Calls Graham’s Bluff on Climate/Immigration
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has given Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) an ultimatum: Stop trying to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year, or you’ll lose my support for climate legislation.
Now, Reid has called Graham’s bluff.
“I don’t know how my friend Lindsey Graham can say this kills energy [legislation],” Reid said last night, according to Talking Points Memo. “It’s up to him.”
But without Graham, it’s unlikely that a climate bill could get enough Republican support to clear the 60-vote threshold. And Reid didn’t appear too optimistic that Graham would come around.
“There’s 40 other Republicans,” Reid said. “Why Lindsey Graham?”

IN Senate Race: GOP Photo Finish?
New poll in the IN Senate race’s GOP primary!
Done yesterday. Out today. It was commissioned by SC Senator Jim DeMint’s PAC…the Senate Conservatives Fund. Wenzel Strategies Research out of Columbus OH did the work. Here are the results:
Undecided 30%
Dan Coats 28%
John Hostettler 18%
Marlin Stutzman 18%
Richard Behney 3%
Don Bates Jr. 3%
The survey was of 801 like Republican primary voters…again all spoken to yesterday over the phone. The margin of error for this poll is plus/minus 3.43%.
REPORTER INTERPRETATION: Coats…the best known candidate is out in front outside the margin of error. But…and this is a huge qualifier…”Undecided/Not Sure” was ahead at the time of this poll…which was yesterday…5-days before primary day coming up on Tuesday, May 4th.
The poll is also commissioned by DeMint’s PAC and is solidly behind the Stutzman campaign. The Senate Conservatives Fund has reportedly poured in $200,000 into the Stutzman campaign (via internet donations) in the final two weeks of the primary contact.
There is a good argument to make that Stutzman is the candidate with the momentum now. The question is whether he can make up the gap in the last four-plus days of the campaign.
The undecideds apparently could throw this race is any direction.

2010 Kia Forte EX, an AW Drivers Log:
SENIOR WEB REPORTER GREG MIGLIORE: The best compliment I can pay this car–and the best way I can sum up my weekend in it–is this feels like quality.
The Forte is comfortable, has a nice interior and drives agreeably. The interior is well-laid out, everything is where it should be, and it presents well. The interior is helped a bit by the leather and sunroof options, but I think in base trim, this would still be a nice setting.
The Forte feels and drives fairly lightweight, and the tight chassis is still comfortable in most situations. The steering is tight as well, and I like it; it makes this sedan interesting to wheel around town in.
The looks on the outside are above average. It’s the same appearance you get amongst pretty much every sedan in this segment, but Kia has done a nice job with the lines and headlights to make the Forte a bit classy.
The engine is fine for this size car. It does the job, and that’s all you can ask.
I picked up my brother and his girlfriend from the airport on Sunday night, and the trunk swallowed their luggage no problem. The car was also a pleasant ride for maneuvering in and out of airport chaos.
For the base price, this car is a solid buy. The options add a bit more comfort, and I’d say it’s still reasonable. Like the Hyundai Sonata, the Forte is an understated yet formidable entry in a crowded part of the market.
ASSISTANT ART DIRECTOR CHERYL L. BLAHNIK: When I look at this car, it just feels plain and boring. I was just in the coupe version not too long ago, which looks so much better from a sporty aspect. This Forte sedan gets easily lost in my memory of cars in this price range. It just needs something to jazz it up to stick out a little more. The interior could also use some spice. Sure, it works fine and does the job well, but is just dull.
Driving the car was also a bit of a void, and I was just in it a couple of hours ago. It handled fine, and the engine is adequate for a car in this class.
I will say that there is one thing very appealing about this car–the price.

Ikea leftover’s garbage can with auto open
Materials: Bolmen Garbage Can, Blanken Corner Wall Shelf, Deka Curtain Wire w/ Clips, Ikea Knob from Dresser, Grundtal Rail Ends & Rationell Variera plastic rail guide.
Description: So when we moved to our new home I encountered a problem that I couldn’t find a garbage can that would fit under my sink, there wasn’t an auto open can small enough that could clear the pipes and such.
I bought the Bolmen garbage can as a temporary measure until I found something better. But one day, with a flash of brilliance, I combined it with host of other items I had and made exactly what I wanted.
The Grundtal Rail ends supply bottom support for the Blanken corner wall shelf to mount to with zip ties I had left over from some Ikea cord tubing I had bought.
The can itself is held in place using a Rationell Variera rail guide that was an extra we got in a package, the groove of the can fits nicely into the groove of the guide.
Lastly I used some spare Deka curtain wire minus the clips that was used for an art installation and fixed one end to the counter the other to the lid with just enough slack so when the door is opened the lid opens up.
I used a knob from an old Ikea dresser we had to attach to the other end of the Deka on the underside of the lid to provide a bit of weight to assist the lid return when the door closes.
Lastly I attached the can to the corner wallshelf with some screws, because sometimes when near empty the can would sometimes pop out and fall over.
Sounds like a lot eh? It was actually pretty easy.

Design of Opel’s new city car will be signed off within the next 6 to 8 weeks
In the next 6 to 8 weeks, the design of Vauxhall/Opel’s new city car will be approved and will proceed into production just in time for the expected sale date towards the end of 2012.In an interview with Autocar, Nick Reilly, the boss of General Motors Europe, said that his experience in conceiving, building and selling small cars will be put to good use. He thinks that the car will be profitable despite the reputation this market segment has of not being a good source of cash flow. Reilly said that to “hit worthwhile profit targets with small car,” the entire cost chain (from development up to marketing) would have to change. He also talked about the brand’s appeal to wealthier and younger car buyers who don’t associate status with the size of the car. These buyers are concerned about environmental factors and they prefer a good-looking car that boasts the latest in technology. Reilly added that the company is focusing its resources on this project because this segment has “great potential” and that not many of his rivals are currently looking into exploiting it. The car will be designed and built in Europe. Reilly wouldn’t give specifics about the pricing but he hinted that it would reflect the positioning of the Opel brand in relation to its rivals. He did say that this new city car will be priced somewhere between the cheapest and the most expensive Corsas.

The Market Just Got Whooped: Here’s What You Need To Know (RIG, DNDN)
Whoo, this was rough. We’ll get full numbers momentarily, but the Dow was down over 161, and the NASDAQ was off about 50, which is 2%. Gold had a very strong day up about $10/oz.
Now here’s what you need to know as you leave work today:
- It’s going to be a very volatile weekend in Greece, as aid talks continue.
- You have to see these photos of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. They look like something out of a Jerry Bruckheimer film.
- Speaking of which, our Map Of The Day shows just how big the oil slick outside of New Orleans really is. It kind of resembles a hurricane.
- SAC Capital may have made $100 million off its Dendreon (DNDN) trade. The stock continued to soar on its FDA approval.
- Goldman’s stock has broken through key support levels.
- Moody’s downgraded a bunch of Greek banks this morning, further destabilizing the market.

It’s a good time to be living in Asia right now, those guys are getting all the hot handsets. You probably remember the Samsung Galaxy S (of course you do!) from CTIA this year, well it looks like its close relative, the Samsung Galaxy A (living the A life?) will be making its way to SK Telecom very soon. The Galaxy A will be sporting Android Eclair (2.1), a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 720MHz processor (underclocked?), 5MP camera with HD video recording, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The Galaxy A is Korea’s first Samsung branded phone, and not a bad choice for a first if you ask me.

4 Burning Questions About a Criminal Case Against Goldman
The Department of Justice is reportedly considering whether to bring criminal charges against investment bank Goldman Sachs, based on the Securities and Exchange Commission complaint. Speculation is swirling that Wall Street haters could finally get their wish and see some bankers behind bars. Here are the answers to some key question about a potential criminal investigation:
Could a Criminal Case Succeed?
The fraud statute that the SEC is using for its civil suit could also be used to prosecute Goldman criminally. So in theory, it is possible that criminal charges could stick — if the SEC’s civil case succeeds. Yet, the standard for a criminal case is much higher. The DOJ must present very compelling evidence that a jury would be able to understand well enough to find that, beyond doubt, Goldman and/or some of its bankers are guilty of fraud. Given that there are many people questioning whether even the civil case can succeed under a weaker standard of guilt, it’s relatively doubtful that the criminal charges would stick. Yet, the public doesn’t have all of the information, so it’s too soon to know the fate of a criminal case for sure.
Who Could Be Prosecuted?
The civil case was brought against the firm and a single named banker — Fabrice Tourre. Who might the DOJ choose to prosecute? According to Chicago Law School Professor and securities law expert M. Todd Henderson, the sky is the limit. If the DOJ feels particularly ambitious, they could try to allege a conspiracy and prosecute the heads of the mortgage unit, he says. But he also finds it unfathomable that the DOJ could show that such a conspiracy existed. He further thinks it’s extremely unlikely that the government could indict the firm itself, as this would essentially condemn Goldman as a criminal organization. As a result, it’s more likely prosecutors focus on a few bankers, like Tourre, if they have enough evidence to bring a case.
Where does Settlement Fit In?
Yesterday, reports indicated that Goldman might be considering settling the civil case. If they do, how would that affect a potential criminal case? Henderson thinks that it would likely preempt one. “It’s hard to imagine that they wouldn’t strike some deal that would get rid of all these actions simultaneously,” he says. In fact, he notes that there have been many cases where the U.S. attorney’s office was used to add additional leverage to civil cases. So the threat of a criminal investigation could merely serve to pressure Goldman to settle. He speculates that what looks like an escalation could just be an attempt by SEC officials to ensure a quick settlement to get the case behind them.
Consequences for Wall Street on a Whole?
In the eyes of Wall Street haters, the SEC-Goldman case probably looks a little analogous to indicting Al Capone for tax evasion. Government officials are largely displeased with the actions of Goldman and Wall Street, but have trouble identifying any tangible wrongdoing. Many accusations of Goldman breaching its fiduciary duty were thrown around at this week’s marathon Senate committee hearing. So if officials figure out some way to go after the banks connected to the government’s belief that Goldman breached its fiduciary duty to clients, then there could be broader consequences for Wall Street. Otherwise, the government will have to rely on fraud. In the context of sophisticated investing, such one-off cases won’t be easy to win.

South Korea Goes Begging To China For Support Against Kim Jong-il

South Korea’s president met today with Hu Jintao in hopes of getting the support he needs to accuse North Korea of sinking his ship.
The meeting was staged as a symbol of growing cooperation. But with Lee Myung-bak planning to take evidence of a hostile attack to the Security Council, where China has veto power, the meeting took on new significance.
Although we don’t know what was said in the 30-minute meeting, it seems Lee was rebuffed: Hu publicly expressed condolences for the shipwreck, nothing more.
Lee’s diplomatic campaign will continue and may call in his American allies. JoongAng Daily put it succinctly:
South Korea spent the month of April mourning the loss of lives from the Cheonan sinking. May is scheduled to be about diplomatic efforts to prepare for responses if North Korea is found to be behind the tragedy.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s could be hours away from definitive proof of a North Korean attack. The military has collected metal fragments from the crash site that are not part of the ship (that means they’re part of a mine or torpedo), according to Korea Times.

Flash 10.1 and Froyo are scheduled for a June release
Adobe CTO, Kevin Lynch, wrote a brief blog post on Adobe’s site yesterday as a response to Steve Job’s
load ofexplanation for why they are not using Flash on their mobile devices. The closing paragraph contains the nugget of information that we are interested in.
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. Kevin Lynch Adobe CTO
So we finally have confirmation of our speculations regarding the big unveiling coming at Google I/O. Pairing this with Andy Rubin’s statements that support for Flash 10.1 comes in Froyo we can reasonably conclude that Froyo will debut alongside Flash at I/O and that the release of both will be coming to some Android users in June. Still up in the air is who those users will be and of course the exact date.
Now as we all know (and as they will proudly tell you) the N1 users are likely to be the first existing users to upgrade to it, with Droid Classic (Yes I just made that up) users possibly being in the mix there as well. But there has to be a launch device to go with it right? The Evo 4G seems like the obvious choice with a release date of June 6th or 13th and features which we already know stack up favorably with Cupertino’s latest, but everything released thus far has it pegged as an Android 2.1 device at launch.
So do you think Google is going to forgo a Flashy (pardon the pun) launch device this time, surprise us with the Evo 4G running Android 2.2 (which would be good news for you Incredible owners), or is there a stealth Android 2.2 device out there that we don’t know about yet?
