  • Teaching a financial foundation

    Published Spring 2010
    Global Advantage

At the Columbia Basin College Foundation, the first order of business is to raise money for scholarships. “Last year, we provided approximately $250,000 in scholarships to 263 students,” says CBC Foundation director of philanthropy Nancy Adams. Occasionally, though, the foundation and its charitable partners find a way to combine fundraising with meaningful educational opportunities. When this happens, everybody wins.

One such opportunity came about last fall, when the CBC Foundation hosted its first “Brown Bag Series” on financial literacy, called “Life Happens.” Among the presenters: Shawn Flinders, Tri-Cities sales manager/RE loan officer at Global Credit Union.

“We had the strong feeling that providing students and the community with a chance to learn practical information about all aspects of personal finance would be of value,” says Adams. “Several weeks into our planning, Sen. Patty Murray came to our campus and did a presentation on, believe it or not, financial literacy. When we saw what she was discussing, we knew we were on the right track.”

The six-week series covered everything from insurance to wills and trusts, tenant law, credit cards and home ownership. Approximately 400 participants attended over the six weeks.

Finding the right presenters was key to the series’ success. The foundation needed speakers who could provide accurate, real-world information and engage a diverse audience. “Because we’re a community college, we serve students ranging from ages 16 to 90 –– at all stages of life,” Adams explains. With such a range of backgrounds, participants ran the gamut from young people who had little to no experience with budgeting or credit to full-fledged adults who were well established or recovering from past mistakes.

Adams and her team began the way many great collaborations do. “We called our friends,” she says. Starting with financial institutions the team knew – and those it hoped to partner with in the future – made the selection process easier. “Fortunately for us, we knew organizations in the financial community like Global. We were asking for a donation to our scholarship fund in addition to finding workshop leaders. (Global is) so profoundly dedicated to educating people that this was a natural priority for them.”

In his workshop, Flinders covered the nuts and bolts of buying a home. “To be honest,” says Adams, “I wasn’t sure that a lot of our students were ready to learn about home buying, but Shawn’s workshop was well-attended, and the students were very attentive. Clearly, this is still the dream of Americans, to own their own homes. Shawn did a great job of explaining to the students that the process of home buying starts right now; and that all the steps that lead up to talking to a Realtor® begin when you get your first checking account and use credit cards. Your financial history is important.”

As a full-time fundraiser, Adams works hard developing partnerships that enable the college to serve its community on many levels. In return, she’s grateful for her own success. “Kudos to a community that’s always so supportive of education,” she says.

  • Closing Time: Another messy ninth for Neftali Feliz

    http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__27/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-30066785-1272522519.jpg?ymXsrDDD5leY0WxL

Neftali Feliz(notes) picked up a save against the White Sox on Wednesday, but he did it in the messiest possible way. Asked to protect a three-run lead, Feliz allowed three hits, two earned runs and one wild pitch. He struck out no one. Juan Pierre(notes) very nearly extended the inning with an infield hit, but he was out at first base by an eyelash.

The Feliz experiment, which seemed so promising a week ago, can’t go on like this much longer. He’s given up 10 hits and six runs over his last four innings. According to the team’s Website, "The Rangers’ closer situation is fluid."

Frank Francisco(notes) has been excellent during Feliz’s struggles, having allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings dating back to April 12. He was warming in the bullpen while Feliz was getting hit on Wednesday. Francisco picked up a save against Chicago the night before in a clean, 10-pitch inning. He seems well positioned to reclaim his old role … and lose it again. That’s the thing with fluid situations.

Francisco’s ownership level has fallen to just 44 percent in Yahoo! leagues. Claim him from the discard pile if you can.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks combined to score 23 runs on Wednesday afternoon, in a game that felt like a 2010 Closing Time best-of compilation: Kelly Johnson(notes) and Chris Young homered, Miguel Olivo(notes) scored two runs, Franklin Morales(notes) struggled, and Juan Gutierrez(notes) earned a save. (No known job change there. Just planned rest for Chad Qualls(notes)).

The actionable news is that Eric Young Jr. hit lead-off for the Rockies for the second straight day. He reached base twice and recorded his second steal of the season. Clint Barmes(notes) has been largely useless thus far (.189/.271/.340), so there’s an obvious opportunity for Young. We’ve had this fire drill before. You should know the deal with EYJ: He swiped 58 bases at Triple-A last season, 46 at Double-A in ’08, and 73 at Single-A in ’07. Right now he’s just three percent owned.

Max Scherzer(notes) has a sketchy history against left-handed hitters (career 1.56 WHIP), and the Twins took full advantage. Jim Thome(notes) went deep in the first, and Scherzer was chased by a parade of singling lefties in the fourth. Nothing like a 14.73 ERA and 2.73 WHIP to wreck your fantasy night.

The Pirates won for the second straight day, again demonstrating that they absolutely own the Brewers. No mas, Doumit. For the details on the Trevor Hoffman(notes) situation, click here. LaTroy Hawkins(notes) appears to be Plan B, based on usage. Carlos Villanueva(notes) is the darkhorse. He has the Ks and the SP-eligibility.

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__27/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-834797653-1272517659.jpg?ymcgqDDDmqYT73c3 If it’s possible for any closer to give up runs quietly, then that’s what Octavio Dotel(notes) has done. He blew a save opportunity on Wednesday, allowing two hits, two walks and one earned run over two innings — and that performance lowered both his ERA and WHIP.

Dotel has allowed 11 earned runs in his past 6.1 innings. He’s been scored upon in each of his last six appearances. Evan Meek(notes) is currently the only member of that ‘pen putting up useful numbers (14 Ks in 14.0 IP, 1.07 WHIP), though Joel Hanrahan(notes) appears to be next in line for the ninth. No part of this blurb makes me regret paying a little bit extra for saves in 2010.

In fairness to Dotel, it’s hard to believe no one (himself included) got a glove on Wednesday’s run-scoring single.

Bengie Molina(notes) did his best to keep Buster Posey(notes) in the minors, going 3-for-4 and raising his average to .350. Aubrey Huff(notes), however, went 0-for-4 with three Ks and he left four runners on base. Nate Schierholtz(notes) was a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored. His power/speed potential is fairly modest; there’s no obvious reason to jump aboard unless you’re in a deep set-up.

The Giants managed to lose on a day that Tim Lincecum(notes) went 8.1 innings and struck out 11. Jayson Werth(notes) hit a bases-clearing double off Brian Wilson(notes) in the ninth, costing Lincecum the win. It was not exactly a well-hit ball, but it was ridiculously well-placed. Here’s the highlight. Wilson and Ryan Madson(notes) both recorded blown saves in Philly’s extra-innings win.

Four starts into his pro career, Cincinnati’s Mike Leake(notes) is 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA and 18 Ks in 27.2 innings. Not spectacular stats, fantasy-wise, but that will play in NL-only. Drew Stubbs(notes) showed signs of life for the Reds, going 2-for-4 with a steal.

Too short for a bullet, too big to ignore: Marlon Byrd(notes) made the best accidental play of the day. Video here. When stuff like that is happening, a normal team would find a way to win. Instead, the Cubs lost to the Nats. … My fondness for Howie Kendrick(notes) was in no way diminished by this walk-off bunt. … Jon Lester(notes) dominated a sad collection of Blue Jays, allowing just one hit over seven innings and striking out 11. Presumably you were never panicked there. … Chris Tillman(notes) tossed a no-hitter for Triple-A Norfolk, striking out six and blanking Freddie Freeman’s(notes) Gwinnett Braves. Tillman will find his way back to Baltimore before long, but the quality-of-opponent issues won’t go away in the AL East. … Jaime Garcia(notes) further cooled off Atlanta’s outrageously cold lineup, limiting the Braves to four hits and no runs over seven innings. Check the batting averages down the line for ATL: .197 (Escobar), .361 (Prado), .241 (Chipper), .203 (Glaus), .200 (Diaz), .197 (Cabrera), .200 (Ross), .160 (McLouth). Jason Heyward(notes) is stuck in a slump, so he took the night off against the left-handed Garcia. His manager says he’s taking too many hittable strikes, and thus falling behind too often. Whatever gets him swinging, I’ll endorse.

With automakers escalating their efforts to come up with electric vehicles, a majority of vehicles plying on the roads could be electric pretty soon. This might sound good for the environment, but when plugged in to sockets, these vehicles will put huge load on the grid. Designers over at Germany’s Fraunhofer group have come up with an ingenious solution in the form of a station that charges your ride when there’s power to spare.

  • Sprint Trending In The Right Direction Despite Continuing Subscriber Losses

    Sprint's Anymobile Calling Plan

Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel said it continued to lose subscribers in the first quarter, but at only 75,000 departures, it represents the best year-over-year improvement in five years.

The company achieved the best subscriber results since 2007, driven by the addition of 348,000 net prepaid subscribers on both the Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) brands. At the end of the quarter, the company had 48.1 million customers. Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse: “Sprint’s first quarter results, including increased net operating revenues and significant year-over-year net post-paid subscriber improvements show we continue to make progress in improving the business.”

The company recorded revenues of $8.09 billion, which is on par with the year ago period’s revenues of $8.2 billion. The company’s net loss totaled $865 million, or 29 cents a share, which is wider than the net loss a year ago, but when you take away a non-cash charge of $365 million, the company would have lost 17 cents a share, which beats the 21 cent loss a year-ago.

    Other results:

—In Q1, post-paid churn was 2.15 percent, an improvement over 2.25 percent in the year-ago period.

—In Q1, prepaid churn was 5.74 percent, compared to 6.86 percent in the year-ago period.

—The forecast: Sprint Nextel expects that both post-paid and total subscriber losses will continue to improve during the rest of the year. The company still expects capital expenditures in 2010 to be $2 billion and to generate positive Free Cash Flow during the remainder of 2010.

  • Researchers Find Alaskan Megaflood Happened 17,000 Years Too Early

New research from the University of Washington indicates that one of the planet’s largest fresh-water megafloods happened some 17,000 years ago and inundated a large area of Alaska.

The comedic value of this story comes from the location of the megaflood, which flooded areas down what is now the Matanuska River in Alaska including Anchorage and Wasilla, home to the loveable Sarah Palin.

The discovery, made by Michael Wiedmer, an Achorage native who is pursuing graduate studies in forest resources at the University of Washington, is evidence of one of four megafloods that took place when Lake Atna breached her ice dams. (more…)

  • Rogers Social View – What’s In A Name

Most recent Canadian Mobile news has rumoured a new service called Social View from Rogers Wireless. Up until now, no one could figure out what it was, although we all could safely assume it had something to do with amalgamation of social networking services. Here is the official description:

a built-in feature of these exclusive smartphones that brings together, in real-time, your contacts’ updates from popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. It also includes a display of recent traditional communications such as texts, calls and instant messages from your contacts. Right in the contact list!

Here’s the breakdown. Social View is a feature that Android devices already have, it now just has a name. Social View is different on all devices and in the future will not be limited to Android devices. For example on the LG Eve, social view is LinkBook, on the HTC Magic, it’s Sense UI’s phonebook app, and on The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, it’s TimeScape. While this may seem very trivial that they are deciding to give a name to a type of app, I think it will not only peek people’s curiosity, it will also give Android a competitive edge over the iPhone. Why? Because the iPhone can not do this!

The phones that this functionality is currently built into are the LG Eve, HTC Magic, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and both the soon to be released Motorola Quench and Acer Liquid E. It should also be noted that because each phone has a different Social View experience, they will not all support every social networking service.

Along with this announcement of Social View comes 3 new plans that nicely compliment it. These new plans are based around social networking and are not for all devices. The first of these plans is the “Unlimited Social Addict Plan” which is directed towards Social View phones, although it is available for other smartphones excluding Blackberry. The second is the “Unlimited Socialite Plan” for feature phones and is an entry level plan. Last is the “Unlimited Social Master Plan” which also is directed at feature phones and sits right above the Socialite Plan. Unfortunately no pricing or other details have been given about these plans as of yet. It is assumed that once Rogers makes the official release and announcement of Social View these new plans will be riding it’s coat tails.

What do you think of this move by Rogers? Do you already use these types of apps on your device?

  • IMPROVING FAMILY LIFE 2010: Study 14 Can parents understand their teenagers?

    Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:12

Canadian Justin Bieber, age 16, arrived in Sydney recently. At the Overseas Passenger terminal, a small concert was hurriedly arranged. It was eventually called off by the police because they could not control the crowd of 6000 girls, mostly aged about 13 years who had spent all night waiting for him. Eventually police called in the Riot Squad, as the girls ran in one direction then the other following rumours he was coming. This follows two other riots by similarly aged girls in New York.

I asked a mother who I knew had allowed her three young teenage daughters to travel and spend the night unaccompanied in Sydney, why she did it. “Do you know who Justin Bieber is?” I asked. “No, just some boy from Canada.” “Why did you allow three such young girls to be alone all night in Sydney?” “I couldn’t control them. They just went feral. I cannot understand my girls.”

I asked her if she remembered the Beatles when she was young? Or the Bay City Rollers? Then I asked if she realized what 13-year-old girls with raging hormones could be like? She replied, “I never thought of that.” It is just as hard for parents to understand teenagers as it is for teenagers to understand parents, (to be addressed in the next in this series).

This week has seen in the news several reports of teenagers committing serious crimes. Four young teenagers held up a taxi driver with a meat cleaver and stole his money. A 13 –year-old was arrested for drug trafficking. An 11-year-old was arrested for stealing and driving cars. The 11-year-old was so uncontrollable that he had only spent 7 days at school this year. His parents did not appear in court nor take him home after he was charged, saying that they could not control him. His mother requested he be held in custody because she could not control him. A magistrate remarked that teenagers committing crimes were becoming younger and younger. The TV show “60 Minutes” showed a program called “The Wildness of Australian Teenagers.”

There are just over two million young people in Australia between the ages of 15 and 24. But four out of five teenagers in the world are to be found in less developed countries. That youth population, which represents nearly one-fifth of the people on earth, must be reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

They are being reached and exploited as no other generation in history. They are the target of thousands of millions of dollars of advertising by Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nike, Reebok, MTV, Levis, Pepsi and ten thousand other advertisers.

Parents often cannot understand teenage behaviour. They often wrongly ascribe their own theories about the behaviour of their children and frequently blame themselves.

There is “conduct disorder” that refers to a group of behavioural and emotional problems in youngsters. Children and adolescents with this disorder have great difficulty following rules and behaving in a socially acceptable way. They are often viewed by other children, adults and social agencies as “bad” or delinquent, rather than with a correct understanding about what is going on within them.

Many factors may contribute to a child developing conduct disorder, including brain damage, child abuse, genetic vulnerability, school failure, and traumatic life experiences.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) suggests the following ways for parents to prepare for their child’s teenage years:

    · Provide a safe and loving home environment.
    · Create an atmosphere of honesty, trust and respect.
    · Allow age-appropriate independence and assertiveness.
    · Develop a relationship that encourages your teen to talk to you.
    · Teach responsibility for your teen’s belongings and yours.
    · Teach basic responsibility for household chores.
    · Teach the importance of accepting limits.

    http://www.aacap.org/

Remember that your teens will probably experiment with his or her values, ideas, hairstyles and clothing in the attempt to define, or find, themselves. This is completely normal behaviour. However, inappropriate or destructive behaviour can be an indication that there is a problem.

Teenagers, especially any with self-esteem issues or family problems, are at risk for any number of self-destructive behaviours such as experimenting with drugs or alcohol, or taking chances with unprotected sex. Depression and eating disorders are common health issues that teenagers face. The following may be warning signs that your child is having a problem:

    · Agitated or restless behaviour
    · Unusual weight loss or gain
    · Less focus on school work
    · Trouble with concentration
    · Sadness that does not go away
    · Indifference about people and things
    · Lack of motivation
    · Fatigue, loss of energy and lack of interest in activities
    · Low self-esteem
    · Trouble falling asleep
    · Trouble with police or other authority figures

If you are worried about your child’s emotions or behaviour, you can start by talking to friends, family members, your spiritual counsellor, your child’s school counsellor, or your family physician about your concerns.

If you think your child needs help, you should get as much information as possible about where to find help for your child. Parents should be cautious about using Yellow Pages phone directories as their only source of information and referral. Other sources of information include:

    · Employee Assistance Program through your employer
    · Local medical society, local psychiatric society
    · Local mental health association
    · The mental health department
    · Local hospitals or medical centres with psychiatric services
    · Departments of Psychiatry in nearby medical schools
    · National Advocacy Organizations
    · National professional organizations.

The variety of mental health practitioners can be confusing. There are psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurses, counsellors, pastoral counsellors and people who call themselves therapists. Few states regulate the practice of psychotherapy, so almost anyone can call herself or himself a “psychotherapist” or a “therapist.” Take care.

    1. The concerns about Australian teenage boys

The Reader’s Digest recently asked: “Where have all the fathers gone?” A professional counsellor gave the case of a 15 year old boy, sullen, angry, and beyond the control of his desperate mother. Dad had walked out years previously. It was a pathetically sad story. What was the advice of the counsellor?

“The boy needs a man to pay attention to him, someone he can look up to.” In some communities of Sydney, there is hardly an intact family where the man is living with his family, is employed, provides support and leadership to the family and is a role model to the young men. In one street I know, in all of the houses there is not one man who is the father of the family of that house.

The men there are largely inadequate, alcoholic, and lacking direction in life. They lack pride in their role as husband and father, and their sons have no idea what it means to be a man and a father.

Australian schools have had strategies to help girls. We have self-esteem programs for girls, mentor programs, maths and science programs. These programs have been stunningly successful, and now girls outrank boys in graduation from High School, are top of the high school in 66% of the classes, topped the state in 103 subjects compared with boys topping 51 subjects, in having the higher number of places in universities, and so on.

There are three quarter of a million children living with one parent. There are 373,000 children of sole parents where the parent is not employed. Those teenagers represented by these figures are a ticking time bomb unless they develop some purpose, meaning and significance in their lives. There is a hopelessness among teenage boys that is reflected in their poor performance at school, a horrifyingly high suicide rate, injury rate and their involvement in crime.

“It took women 30 years to change society’s ideas about what women are, now we can re-educate people about boys,” says senior lecturer in education at the University of Western Sydney Nepean, Peter West. “How much longer are we going to put up with the statistic that Australia has the highest rate of male teenage suicide in the world and that 80% of successful suicides in Australia are by men? We are doing something wrong. Boys have the message that they have to live fast and die young.”

Teenage boys must understand their role and significance but most are uncertain and react only with aggression and violence. There is a desperate need for boys to come into contact with a good male role model, preferably their own father. Unfortunately many of my generation are poor at communicating with their sons at the very time when sons need good role models and to understand the hard facts of life.

Dr John Powell, an American psychologist, spoke very movingly about his father’s death. At the moment of his father’s death his mother was on one side of the hospital bed and he was on the other side. He helped put some pillows behind his father’s back and the last minute of his father’s life he records like this: “I remember that minute my father died. I was on one side of the bed and my mother was on the other. He was barely conscious but all of a sudden he sat upright and he looked with a face of awe and I knew that he was dying because my father never showed any emotion on his face, he kept everything inside his guts.

Then I lowered him back onto the pillows and he shut his eyes, and I said ‘Mum, he’s dead. Dad is dead.’ She leaned across to me and said ‘Oh, John, he loved you so much. Did you ever know how proud he was of you?” And those words hit me like a blunt object. I wanted to say ‘Why did you tell me that?’ but instead I said to her ‘I’d better go and get the doctor to confirm he’s dead.’

And out in the corridor I kept asking myself, ‘Why did she tell me that?’ And then I suddenly realised. She told me that because he was always too frightened to tell me that.

“He never told me he loved me and he never told me he was proud of me. I went back with the doctor into the room and I stood against the wall crying and a nurse came up to me and said all the usual things. I couldn’t talk to her. I wanted to say to her ‘I’m not crying because my father died. I know it’s a blessing for him. But I’m crying because he never told me he loved me. I’m crying because he never told me he was proud of me.’ It would have made such a difference to me if I’d known he loved me and he was proud of me.”

One of the hardest things in the world is to stand beside a grave and think of all the things that ought to have been said in life that never were said. True communication in families means to talk and to listen to one another. There is a growing concern that our teenage boys have few role models and little communication. A commitment to Jesus Christ gives a teenager the greatest role model of all, and Jesus is a friend through whom we can communicate everything to God in prayer. He is our model of manhood, and the means of our communication with our Heavenly Father.

    2. What is it that teenagers want?

“Project Teen Canada” was a nation-wide survey of young people from 15 to 19 years of age, conducted in 1984. It surveyed 3,600 young people asking about their beliefs, hopes, values, sources of enjoyment, and their attitudes toward family, friends, sexuality, and the church. The project was co-ordinated Dr. Reginald W. Bibby, professor of sociology at the University of Lethbridge, author of “The Emerging Generation”.

Young people today place a high value on friendship, expressing indifference for institutions, including the church. They are “open to God – closed to the church.” The teenagers’ beliefs were consistently higher than that of their parents. 85% of teenagers indicated belief in the existence of God (compared to 81% of adults). 85% of teenagers reported belief in the deity of Jesus Christ (compared to 68% of adults). Regarding life after death, 80% of teenagers professed belief (compared to 69% of adults).

91% indicated they considered friendship to be very important to them. Seven other values were very important to a decreasing number: Being loved 87%; Freedom 84%; Success 78%; Excitement 58%; Acceptance by God 41%; Recognition 41%; Being popular 21%. (Leslie K. Tarr. World Evangelisation, December 1986).

An Australian teacher took a similar survey, asking “What do teenagers want?” He asked fourth year/Year 10 (fifteen to sixteen-year-olds). They replied:

    1. We want to achieve something in life – success.
    2. We want to prove to our parents we can “make it”.
    3. We want to be trusted by our parents – over money matters, over times of coming home, over the choice of our friends; to be trusted to make our own decisions.
    4. We want our parents to stop nagging us about study.
    5. We want some privacy to get to know who we really are.
    6. We want to be popular.
    7. We want fun. You’re only young once.
    8. We want to be understood. Listen with patience.
    9. We want to know the facts of life, sex, human relationships, feelings and values, the big controversial issues in economics, politics, sex and religion.
10.We want what sensible, responsible adults want!

I was impressed with how one teenager wrote to the Sydney Morning Herald: “Sir: I am only 17, but I have become very cynical about the problems facing the average kid in Australia, and how nothing is ever really done to help. I believe that unemployment, drugs, teenage suicide, youth homelessness, juvenile sex and child poverty are a symptom, not a disease. These problems are rapidly growing and, at best, politicians are covering up the realities that confront the average teenager every day. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that one in seven teenagers would seriously contemplate suicide if their lives meant anything.

Similarly, I don’t think the average 13 to 19 year-old would need 10 different sexual partners each year if he found stimulation and enjoyment from life. Maybe if teenagers could sense some hope they would stay at school or try to work, but nothing is being done to provide that hope. In the 60s, teenager rebelled against authority, trying to change their destinies – they failed, and my generation is the result. We have no cause, we let life direct us without trying to make a difference. We don’t try, as our parents did, to change the system because we see that there is no point. The system doesn’t care. The youth of Australia are looking for someone to bring some hope to their plight. I hope such a person exists.”

That someone is Jesus Christ. He cares for teenagers and His Apostle Paul spelled out to young Timothy how a teenager should live.

    3. The Bible’s advice to teenagers

The world always regards teenagers with suspicion, and even Timothy was suspect. The advice given to Timothy is the hardest possible advice to follow, and yet it was the only possible advice. The advice was that Timothy must silence criticism by conduct.

Plato, the great Greek philosopher, was once falsely accused of dishonourable conduct. “Well,” he said, “we must live in such a way that all men will see that the charge is false.” Arguments and verbal defences cannot silence criticism; conduct can. What then were to be the marks of Timothy’s conduct?

Paul wrote to young Timothy (1 Tim 4:12) “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

    1. An example in speech. Too many teenagers are foul mouthed, trying to impress. Paul asks that your speech should always be honest and loving, “speaking the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).

    2. An example in life. This suggests that our lives are to be controlled by our commitment to God, not like the hypocrites Paul described (Titus 1:16): “They profess that they know God; but in their works they deny Him.”

    3. An example in love. Love, the greatest of Christian virtues, means an unconquerable benevolence. If a person is guided by Christian love, no matter what other people do or say, a Christian will seek nothing but their good. A Christian will never be bitter, never resentful, never vengeful, will never allow hatred, will never refuse to forgive. No matter what others are like, no matter what they do, a Christian will seek only their good. This kind of love takes over the whole of one’s personality. Ordinarily, love is something which we cannot help. Love of our nearest and dearest is an instinctive thing, which is part of our being. The love between the sexes comes unbidden.

Ordinarily love is a thing of the heart; but clearly this Christian love is more than a thing of the heart; it is a thing of the will. It is not something which a man cannot help; it is an achievement and a conquest. Christian love is that conquest of self whereby we are enabled to develop an unconquerable caring for other people. One authenticating mark of the Christian leader is that he cares for others, no matter what others do.

    4. An example in faith. This implies that we trust God and are faithful to Him. Faithfulness to Christ, no matter what that fidelity may cost. It is not difficult to be a good soldier when things are going well. But the valuable soldier fights well when his body is weary and his stomach is empty, when the situation seems hopeless and when he is in the midst of a campaign the movements of which he cannot understand.

    5. An example in purity. “In purity” is important as we live in this present evil world. Ephesus was a centre for sexual impurity and the young man Timothy was faced with Kings Cross-style temptations. He must have a chaste relationship to the women in the church (1 Tim. 5:2) and keep himself pure in mind, heart and body. Purity is an unconquerable allegiance to the standards of Jesus Christ.

When Governor Pliny was reporting back to the Roman Emperor Trajan about the Christians in Bithynia, where he was governor, he wrote: “They are accustomed to bind themselves by an oath to commit neither theft, nor robbery, not adultery; never to break their word; never to deny a pledge that has been made when summoned to answer for it.” The Christian pledge was to a life of purity. The Christian ought to have a standard of honour and honesty, a standard of self-control and chastity, a standard of discipline and consideration that is far above the standards of the world. The simple fact is that the world will never have any use for Christianity, until the Christian Church can prove that it produces the best men and women in the world.

The authenticating mark of the Christian leader is a life lived on the standards of Jesus Christ, and not on the standards of the world.

Nigel Lane at his excellent blog: http://youthworkercoach.com/blog/ says there are eight things that set Christian teens apart and that make Christian teens different.

    1. The Bible – they read it, study it, and meditate on it. Non-Christians just ignore or ridicule it.
    2. Prayer – they do it as a part of their normal lives as opposed to only when a crisis occurs.
    3. Temptation – they recognise it and resist it [not always successfully] as opposed to embrace it or not even see it as temptation but simply as a fun thing to do
    4. Guidance – they understand that there is a plan worth finding and seek guidance from God and others as opposed to letting life pass them by.
    5. Witnessing – they talk to others about their faith [this is not an easy one and they often need support].
    6. Peer group pressure – they can spot it from a distance and do everything they can to not get sucked in by the popular crowd.
    7. Personal relationships – they treat people with respect and offer them support and love at all times rather than look down on people different to them.
    8. Self image – they get theirs from God and what he says about them rather than following the popular fads and media provided images.

Jesus calls teenagers to a radical, new life-style, different to the rest of community. Without Him you will always be only average, but with Him you will become one of the change-agents of this world. There is no greater challenge for any teenager than in the freshness of life to commit yourself to Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

  • Ecological gluing: with GREENLINE on the „green line“

Robatech’s market appearance has been characterized by a green logo for more than 30 years, and the Concept hotmelters of the latest GREENLINE generation are also „green“ because their working mode is particularly energy saving. Up to 17,4% *) energy can be saved in combination with a heated hose NW 6 mm and the fully insulated SX Diamond applicator heads which Robatech originally presented as a world’s first at the Interpack 2008 exhibition.

This energy saving is the result of an exact analysis which Robatech carried out in-house for each component: We determined where the overall system emits the most heat, and then insulated these areas specifically. „From the applicator head over the hose right to the hotmelter we carefully investigated all appliance components for their energy consumption and heat losses. In this way we found out where to attack in order to achieve perceivable energy savings. The first step was to design our fully-insulated applicator head SX Diamond which consumes up to 60% less energy than the preceding models. Within the framework of our GREENLINE concept we also exchanged the hoses: Energy can also be saved by using a hose of diameter 6 mm instead of the previous 8 mm. The latest measures we implemented with a view to „greener“ and more ecological Robatech adhesive applicator systems are the special insulation with which we provide the melting tank of our well-proven Concept hotmelters and the cover over the adhesive distributor. All these optimizations enable us to save 17,4% *) energy compared with the hotmelt applicator systems offered so far. This puts us in the lead also when it comes to ecologically working hotmelt applicator systems. A further plus of the insulation of the applicator head and the insulated cover over the adhesive distributor is the improved protection of the operating personnel: The danger of personal injury (burns) during operation of the appliances is reduced to the minimum“, explains Hanspeter Huber, Product Manager Packaging Industry at Robatech.

Robatech sets a clear example with its GREENLINE concept: Optimizations as well as new and further developments in the sense of more ecology, environment friendliness and sustainability are initiated and realized step by step.

Since December 2009 the Concept hotmelt series with tank volumes of 5 and 8 litres (the best-selling models of Robatech’s Concept range) come exclusively in the GREENLINE execution with special insulation – and this at the same price as the preceding models. At a later point in time the Concept hotmelters with bigger tank volumes will also become available with the special GREENLINE insulation, at no extra charge. Moreover, Robatech has further „green projects“ in the pipeline.

*) The following two hotmelt systems were measured and compared:

    a) Concept B 5/2, one heated hose NW 8 mm / 1.8 m, one jetting head AX100
    b) Concept B 5/2 „GREENLINE“, one heated hose NW 6 mm / 1.8 m, one jetting head SX Diamond

  • External Central Suction System for Oil Mist

An LTA customer manufactures sawing blades for various applications which are ground using oil. The oil mist produced during the process is sucked off and fed to an air cleaning system through pipes. As the previous air cleaning was insufficient a new system was purchased. The customer decided for a product by Messrs. LTA who delivered the perfectly adapted filter AC 20001 from the modular large-module series introduced in 2008.
The AC 20001 is an electrostatic filter which is particularly well suited for this field of application. On the one hand, the electrostatic precipitation principle – which is unmatched also for filtering oil – helps to reliably keep within the required limit values. On the other hand, the low pressure loss of the filter grants an energy-saving operation. The oil precipitated in the filter is pumped back in the oil treatment system via a recirculating pump and retrieved.
A corresponding filter with energy-saving EFF1 blower was externally installed to the pipe system adapted by a partner firm. The blower is controlled by a frequency converter as needed. In excess of this, operation over the weekend – when circulation and suction are clearly reduced – becomes possible by means of various switch-points. This is another strong point of this energy-optimized system.

The scope of delivery of LTA for this project comprised the cleanable large AC 20001 type filter (effective suction output approx. 25,000m³) including attachment accessory and external operating panel, one delivery pump for evacuating the precipitated medium and the setting and commissioning of the complete system in January 2010.

The advantage of this system is the high separation degree of the electrostatic filter as well as the use of regenerative filter elements. Thanks to the use of regenerative filter elements, the filters may be cleaned as often as required which eliminates the high disposal and purchase costs for replacement filters.

LTA Lufttechnik is a renowned partner for complete solutions in air technology. The company projects, builds and delivers air filter and fire protection systems for trade and industry. For over 30 years, LTA has been researching, developing and manufacturing aerosol separation products. The electrostatic separation method is eco-friendly and has continuously been further developed and improved.

  • Automatic green sand control GSC

Green sand control in foundry has always been one of the main goals to be achieved in order to obtain good quality productions and to minimize scraps.

So far, sand control methods were mainly based on the control of return sand moisture and on the consequent water addition to muller to obtain the desired moisture of prepared sand. There are also control systems which determine the compactability of mulled sand and then determine the quantity of water to be added.

All these systems give a partial answer to the demand of quality sand, in particular of constant quality sand. In fact, they do not allow the automatic control of important parameters such as strength, active bentonite, total bentonite, permeability and automatic addition of additives and new sand.

  • Record output with FAMUR Group longwall system

In January the first Polish longwall system in Russia reached much higher output than planned. The longwall system manufactured by FAMUR Group and delivered to Baikaimska mine last year has already reach the output of 1 million tons!

The longwall system operates in one of the Kuzbassrazriezugol Coal Company’s Russian mines. It is the first Polish complete longwall system in Russia for mining coal seams with a thickness exceeding five meters. In January the equipment produced 193,000 tons, which was 30 t over the estimated output.

The geo-mining conditions in the Siberian mine are difficult. The seam incline of up to 25º require specific adjustments of the equipment. All elements of the FAMUR Group longwall system are prepared for this character of operation. They are also adjusted to the aggressive environment. The hydraulic control system is filled with fluid resistant to the low temperatures of even minus 50ºC. The powered roof supports are equipped with special sealing and anticorrosive rewelded layers.

Each element of the longwall system was designed complying with all necessary safety parameters. The longwall system successfully passed the compatibility trial in 2008 in FAZOS factory and it was favorably received by the Russian client.

Successful commissioning of the system was carried out by team of 10 professionals and miners, who trained the staff in Baikaimska mine. The longwall system is very modern, it requires only 15 people of staff because each element of the system can be operated from the central PC.
”The FAMUR Group delivers complete longwall systems which include not only the machines and equipment, but also the control and monitoring systems. The longwall system delivered to our Russian client reflects this approach”, said Ryszard Bednarz, FAMUR S.A.’s Vice-President for Research & Development.

The delivery of complete longwall system to the Baikaimska mine is a double success – FAMUR Group equipped the longwall in high performance, modern and effective machines and also tackled a challenge of transferring from an open pit to the underground mine. In Baikaimska mine coal will be transported from the face to the surface through an incline by BSC and belt conveyor, from the road heading to the coal washing plant. The complete longwall system operates in seams lying up to 350m deep, and the mine resourse of 50 mln tons shows a good prospects for the FAMUR Group longwall system.

  • Getting to grips with the FinGripper

Learning from nature – built for nature: with the FinGripper from Festo fruit, bulbs or pressure-sensitive food can be handled quickly and reliably. This is thanks to the so-called “Fin Ray effect” which is based on the design of the tail fins of fish.

If tulip bulbs and soft chocolate eggs are gripped with conventional metal grippers or vacuum functions, the result is a high level of loss and damage. This goes against the grain of the two central objectives of automation technology: speed and quality.
