  • New Multiflux® Mixer GMS C from Gericke

Gericke’s Multiflux® mixer GMS creates with its 2 horizontal, overlapping mixing rotors a fluidized bed. As a mixing process is based on the exchange of the particles in a volume by convection, this principle is very efficient for the energy-saving and product respecting mixing.

The GMS mixer is known as long-lasting and reliable process equipment. In order to complete its exist-ing range, Gericke has made a redesign of the GMS Multiflux mixer that responds to the increasing demand for hygienic execution in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

The new model is called GMS C. C stands for canti-levered and refers to the 2 shafts that are cantile-vered, offering many advantages. Not only is the number of sealing divided by 2. Due to the con-struction, the front side of the mixer can be opened entirely. In the high end version, named the GMS ECD, the operator can even pull out the complete drive and mixing shafts out of the body. Large lat-eral doors offer an easy access to the mixing chamber.

The new execution shortens the inspection-, dis-mantle- and cleaning cycle and increases the value creating production time!
The concept of the shaft sealing is adapted according to the product and process characteristics.

A reliable and robust food grade stuffing box is in the basic execution foreseen. In the high end ver-sion, a “hypergienic” sealing allows the dismantling without tools and total access to the shafts.

Different investigations show that Gericke’s Multiflux® mixers are capable to mix additives and minor components quick and reliably also in concentrations of some per mille.
Industrial scaled trials can be carried out in our new with full-scale machines equipped Test Center.

We look forward to meeting you at the Powtech exhibition 2010 (27.- 29.04.2010, hall 6, booth 311)

  • ACI’s JetBlack Personnel De-Duster Helps Break Dangerous Bad Habits

They say that in order give up bad habits something positive must be put in their place. So it was at the Whitwell Works of Steetley Dolomite Ltd who quarries and produces magnesium limestone products for the steel, refractory and agricultural industries.

The processing of the limestone to produce these products results in the creation of a lot of dust around the plant which gets deposited on the overalls of workers on site.

To de-dust themselves, although advised frequently not to because of the very real danger that it poses, many of the staff used to clean their overalls down with compressed air.

Thankfully that situation has now changed. This has come about since John Collins had a blower powered ‘JetBlack’ personnel cleaning unit from Air Control Industries (ACI) of Chard installed on trial after an on-site demonstration. The trial, which started in February, proved so successful because of the appreciation by his colleagues throughout the plant for its safety and ease of use that he has had second unit installed.

“Everyone is really pleased with the ACI JetBlack”, said John Collins, Steetley Dolomite’s Senior Electro Technician. “It cleans down effectively and is safe. It eliminates all the health hazard risks present when using compressed air. By providing the JetBlack as an alternative we have broken the bad practice of using compressed air for cleaning down.”

The blower powered JetBlack delivers high volumes of air at low pressure that can even be applied directly onto exposed skin.

  • Combined Version of Shredder AND Granulator: The HERBOLD Granulator of the

The advantages of a single-shaft shredder are well known: it is possible to fill a feed hopper which is then gradually emptied by means of a hydraulically operated ram without the assistance of operators: due to its special design, the rotor only “nibbles” at the material that is fed via the hydraulic ram.
Until now it has not been possible to obtain small granule sizes with these shredders: often a 15 or 20 mm-screen has been the lower limit, making intermediate conveying and a secondary granulator necessary in order to achieve smaller granule sizes ranging from 4 to 8 mm and a satisfactory throughput.

Now it is possible in one single size reduction step with the HERBOLD granulator of the
HB series. The design of the HERBOLD HB granulator is a combination of a feed hopper and a hydraulic ram with a granulator. Due to the special design of the grinding chamber and the high cutting frequency, it is now possible to transform bales, cut open film rolls, mingled packs of sprue spiders, but also extremely large and thick-walled purgings into the finished product in one single step.

Also bulk hollow bodies, e.g. whole IBC containers and rainwater collecting basins can be processed with this machine in a particularly economic way. An intermittent feeding of large quantities of material (e.g. a great many of bottle crates) is therefore possible without the necessity of dosed feeding or the risk of jammed material in the grinding chamber. Once the material has been fed and the hopper filled, no operators will any longer be necessary, thus enabling a semi-automatic operation.

Typical input material for the granulator of the HB series:

The main advantage of this new development is its space-saving design since only one size-reduction step is necessary. In addition, only one size-reduction step also makes cleaning and colour and material changes much easier: there is no problematic and difficult to clean intermediate conveying by means of a belt conveyor. Only one machine will need knife change and maintenance, thus reducing maintenance times and costs. Compared to a two-step solution and a granulator fed by gravity, it has also a considerably favourable effect on the energy balance.

The Quitter’s makin’ stuff up again.

    Is America a Christian nation?

Sarah Palin said on Friday that it’s “mind-boggling” to suggest otherwise.

But two groups dedicated to the separation of church and state are now speaking out against her, arguing that she is misreading the founders’ intent.

It’s incredibly hypocritical that Sarah Palin, who disapproves of government involvement in just about anything, now suddenly wants the government to help people be religious,” Barry Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, told ABC News. “It is wildly inconsistent with her views on limited government to get the government involved in matters of faith.”

    […]

“While the founders’ views on religion varied from person to person, there is no doubt that they believed strongly that religion had no place in government,” said Paul Fidalgo, the communications manager for the Secular Coalition for America. “John Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli which stated in no uncertain terms that ‘the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.’

Our Constitution established a secular government and has no mention of Jesus, Christianity, or a god of any kind, despite the false message spread by figures such as Sarah Palin who claim that America was founded as a Christian nation,” Fidalgo continued.

I’m guessing the Quitter thinks John Adams is just a fancy elitist northeastern beer.

Right-wing media continue to distort Obama’s comments on remaining “a dominant military superpower”

Right-wing media figures, led by Sarah Palin, have continued to distort President Obama’s comments that “whether we like it or not,” the United States “remain[s] a dominant military superpower,” in order to suggest that Obama is opposed to the U.S. holding this position.

Right-wing media suggest Obama thinks “a strong America” is “a problem”

Palin: “Mr. President, is a strong America a problem?” In an April 16 Facebook post, Palin, who is a Fox News contributor, responded to Obama’s comments that “whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower,” by saying, “Whether we like it or not? Most Americans do like it. America’s military may be one of the greatest forces for good the world has ever seen, liberating countless millions from tyranny, slavery, and oppression over the last 234 years.” She concluded: “The truth is this: by his actions we see a president who seems to be much more comfortable with an American military that isn’t quite so dominant and who feels the need to apologize for America when he travels overseas. Could it be a lack of faith in American exceptionalism? The fact is that America and our allies are safer when we are a dominant military superpower – whether President Obama likes it or not.”

Hoft: Obama “really believes America is the problem not the solution.” In an April 18 post on his Gateway Pundit blog, Jim Hoft linked to Palin’s Facebook post and wrote: “And, he’s supposed to be the leader?… He really believes America is the problem not the solution… Whether he liked it or not, this provoked Sarah Palin to pen her latest blog post on his radicalism. The former Alaskan governor nailed President Obama on his open regret for American exceptionalism.”

Fox Nation: “Palin Asks: Mr. President, Is a Strong America a Problem?” On April 16, The Fox Nation also linked to Palin’s Facebook post, under the headline, “Palin Asks: Mr. President, Is a Strong America a Problem?” From The Fox Nation:

In fact, Obama’s remarks show he was referring to cost of getting “pulled into” violent international conflicts

Obama discussed “cost” of getting “pulled into” violent conflicts abroad. Obama’s remarks came in response to the question: “Given the progress you have cited in recent days on your foreign policy agenda, to what extent do you feel like you have gained political capital with which to take further to the international stage for the rest of this year, to perhaps rejuvenate some initiatives in trouble spots such as the Middle East and elsewhere?” In his answer, Obama stated that “[i]t is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them.  And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure.”

Allahpundit: “Obama’s getting a bad rap on the ’superpower’ comment.” In an April 16 HotAir.com post, titled, “Obama’s getting a bad rap on the ’superpower’ comment,” conservative blogger Allahpundit wrote: “This has been bugging me all week…I don’t respect attempts to bowdlerize” Obama’s “superpower” remarks. From his HotAir.com blog post:

“When conflicts break out, one way or another, we get pulled into them.” True enough, and I don’t always “like” that we’re pulled into them. For example, I don’t “like” the fact that we have 30,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea as cannon fodder in case the lunatic to the north ever attacks Seoul. But I accept it because I understand it’s an effective deterrent that saves millions of lives. I don’t “like” the fact that we’re forced to take the lead on Iran even though their military capabilities are more of an immediate threat to Europe and the Sunnis, but I accept it because the stick we wield is so much bigger than everyone else’s that we’re most likely to bring them to heel. I don’t “like” the fact that American troops have spent the past seven years dodging – and, sometimes, not dodging – IEDs in Iraq, but I accept it because I think having a democracy in the region will eventually put pressure on local autocrats to liberalize and held deflate jihadism. Disagree with my position on any or all of those if you like, but I don’t see how it’s controversial or demeaning to suggest that the world’s policeman, like any policeman, doesn’t always enjoy his job. In fact, less than six months ago, Pew found for the first time in 45 years that those who believe the U.S. should mind its own business abroad outnumber those who don’t. I think that isolationist impulse is nutty and a de facto invitation to malign powers to expand their influence, but then so does The One – which, I take it, is why he ordered the surge in Afghanistan, is going slow on withdrawal from Iraq, is stepping up drone attacks in Pakistan, and is keeping the troops in Korea and elsewhere in place. If we insist on playing “gotcha” with short soundbites that supposedly provide some insight into his thinking but aren’t even reflected in half of his policies, can we at least provide the full soundbite for context? Geez.

  • At Xconomy Detroit, A New Narrative Begins In A City That Is Always Striving

    RenCen1
    Howard Lovy wrote:

Welcome to Xconomy Detroit, a continuing chronicle of what this city is “becoming.”

The word “Detroit” has always been immersed in meaning far beyond the physical borders of this great and tragic city. At one time, there was no need to define what one meant by the phrase “coming out of Detroit.” It was synonymous with the very best of American ingenuity and progress. Time passes, and the D-word is almost an epithet.

Here’s what I think: “Detroit” is a verb.

It is constantly in the process of doing, of becoming, of moving from one state of being to another. This is true despite what you may hear or read about Detroit’s historic complacency as a one-industry town.

I have lived in Michigan most of my life. I know that Detroit is always seeking to become—even within the confines of its now-maligned “one industry.” There is a great deal of “becoming” contained within the knowledge, talent, creativity, and sheer willpower of the late, great automotive industry.

Even back in the mid-’80s, when I went to school at Wayne State University in Detroit, there was talk of renaissance, a common buzzword in Detroit. But it has taken just about my entire adult life for me to actually see the seeds of true renaissance.

TechTownA few weeks ago, I went back to my old Wayne State campus—where my father before me attended, as well—and was impressed by the bustle over at TechTown, a business incubator that has seen unbelievable growth just in the past year. I saw young go-go business types walking with bookish-looking scientists as they toured their new digs together. With 160 tenants, TechTown is full. TechTown Two is just being launched inside, appropriately enough, a shut-down old Cadillac dealership.

There is a hunger here. It comes out of necessity, certainly, as many talented people find themselves out of work, forced to become instant entrepreneurs. Hobbies become livelihoods. Long-held ideas are taken out of drawers and, thanks to incubators like TechTown, have a chance to breathe.

But TechTown is only the beginning of a new narrative for Detroit. And when I say “Detroit,” I am also talking about Southeastern Michigan, including Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, which is placing more emphasis these days on spinning out companies and partnering with industry. University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman has a variation on an old academic mantra. At U-M, it’s “partner or perish” as the university aggressively pursues business relationships to turn academic ideas into business realities.

Lawrence Molnar, director of U-M’s Economic Development Administration University Center, recently told a congressional panel that universities are playing a key role in turning local economies around.

It is pretty to say, this idea of a turnaround, but it is hard to convey just how enormous the task is. Michigan lost about 80,000 manufacturing jobs just in the last year alone. Unemployment is the highest …Next Page »
