  • If you have nothing nice to say about Julio Borbon, say it here

    http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__26/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-684226660-1271632495.jpg?ymvZSADDOD5SpaNV

It would be an exaggeration to say that Julio Borbon(notes) swings at everything. But so far this season, he’s hacked at most things. Borbon has swung at 50.9 percent of the pitches he’s seen and 38.5 percent of pitches outside the strike zone. That gives him the 17th highest rate of bad-ball swings in the majors, according to the data at Fangraphs.

Borbon is, without question, the most disappointing player who I haven’t yet dropped. He’s batting .083 through nine games. His OPS is somehow just .191. To date, he’s managed to hit exactly one line-drive. ONE. In 38 plate appearances, he’s been credited with 13 flyballs, 13 groundballs, and one line drive.

In case you’re wondering what Borbon’s walk-rate is, it’s nothin’. It’s zero percent. The Rangers’ primary leadoff hitter has not yet drawn a walk. For that reason — and presumably many others — he isn’t likely to be their leadoff hitter when he returns to the lineup at Boston on Tuesday. Instead, he’ll hit ninth.

An optimist might say that there’s an element of bad luck in Borbon’s poor start, and they’d remind us that at every professional level he’s been a .300 hitter with elite speed. But optimists can [profane]. They aren’t welcome here. This post is for Borbon complaints only. Please register yours in comments.

And if you’d like to complain about the analyst(s) who talked you into Borbon, that’s OK, too. Let’s just please keep the comments Julio-related in some way.

  • Yarn: Remembering the Way Home by Kyoko Mori

This weekend, I get to meet Kyoko Mori in livetime [I’m scheduled to moderate an Asian American literary panel on Sunday morning as part of the first-ever Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival, sponsored by the brand-new Asian American Literary Review). Anyone can join me, by the way … the seven-fabulous-writers panel is free and open to the public (more information below).

So it’s been a long while since Mori has been on my literary radar, although my teenage daughter’s bookshelves now house Mori’s young adult titles, including Shizuko’s Daughter and One Bird. Ironically, Mori confesses her dislike for children in Yarn, although her most successful fiction has been for younger readers. But I’m getting ahead of myself here …

Born and raised in Kobe, Japan, Mori is just 12 when her beloved mother “couldn’t see the point of going on,” living an isolated life with two young children and an openly philandering husband. Forever haunted by her suicide, the lost/missing mother looms large in all of Mori’s titles. Within a mere two months of the tragedy, Mori’s neglectful father brings home an abusive stepmother. Mori eventually manages to escape not only her family, but the binding traditions of Japanese culture by moving to the States for graduate school, eventually becoming Dr. Mori with a PhD in English/Creative Writing.

When Mori herself marries, the relationship could not be more different from her parents. While her mother “had told her parents that she would rather die than live without Hiroshi [Mori’s father],” Mori looks at her own marriage to Chuck, a schoolteacher, as a helpful “formality,” something that will last only “as long as he and I chose.” During the dozen years they are bound together, they keep most of their intimate lives separate – from their bank accounts to their family and friends. Mori’s repeated attempts to plant roots in Green Bay, Wisconsin – Chuck’s hometown – where she lands her first teaching job, eventually fail. Her slowly unraveling marriage ends in amicable divorce, and Mori finds true contentment and peace on her own.

The one constant in Mori’s unsettled life is her knitting … as if with every project, she is trying to knit together the mismatched, sometimes unruly threads of her scattered existence. From the yellow mittens she failed to make correctly in a 7th grade home economics class to the “Flip-Flop Mittens” she is able to successfully snip and restitch 30 years later, Mori’s Yarn is one woman’s long journey across oceans, cultures, and relationships to finally reach ‘home.’

Somewhat surprisingly, Yarn is a quick, quiet read. Mori reels you in, row by row, detail by detail, much as she might unhurriedly construct another seamless sweater (a non-pattern to which she is partial), until the sweater – and story – becomes fully complete.

Tidbit: On Sunday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m., Kyoko Mori joins Peter Bacho (Leaving Yesler, Cebu), Sonya Chung (Long for This World), Ru Freeman (A Disobedient Girl), April Naoko Heck (poems in Artful Dodge, Shenandoah), Srikanth Reddy (Facts for Visitors), and Karen Tei Yamashita (I Hotel, Circle K Cycles) at Montgomery College’s Cafritz Hall 101, 954 King Street, Silver Spring, Maryland. • Cars.com’s list of 2010 green cities

    From Green Right Now Reports

With the 40th anniversary of Earth Day approaching, Cars.com evaluated car shopping behavior nationwide to name the most eco-friendly cities. In the site’s 3rd annual Green Cities Index, San Francisco topped the charts, beating out all other cities based on its interest in hybrid vehicles as a percentage of total car shopping activity on Cars.com.

Like last year, West Coast shoppers showed the greatest interest in hybrid vehicles. Last year’s winner, Eugene, Ore., dropped to fourth. The lone cities outside of California that made the top ten are Glendive, Mont., Madison, Wis. and Gainesville, Fla. The South continues to lag behind most major cities in the country in embracing hybrid vehicles. For the second straight year, Laredo, Texas, had the dubious distinction of being last on our list.

“Outside the West Coast, smaller towns across the country with large state universities continue to show larger than normal interest in hybrid cars,” Olsen said. “Madison, Wis., home to the University of Wisconsin; Gainesville, Fla., home to the University of Florida; and Charlottesville, Va., home to the University of Virginia all appear in the top 15.”

  • Facts And Myths About Cutting Gas Costs

BillShrink writes in with some tips on how to cut the costs of fueling your car. Just as valuable as the tips to cut costs are the way the email shoots down myths about gas-saving methods that don’t really work.

    From the email:

    · Avoid idling when possible. Idling wastes gas when you could be using it on the road.

    · Use your cruise control. Cruise control is probably in your car, so use it! Driving at a constant speed helps save your car gas.

    · Use overdrive gears. Using these gears makes your engine slow down and use less gas.

    · Avoid carrying excessive weight. The heavier your car, the more gas your car uses. An extra 100 pounds reduces your MPG by two percent!

    · Don’t speed. We know you’re probably running late but taking the pedal off the metal. The faster your car is going, especially when over 60 mph, the more gas you need.

    · Don’t brake or accelerate too quickly. Driving aggressively can lower your gas mileage significantly, especially when you’re driving on the highway.

    · Loyalty = Savings. Join a loyalty club. Some gas stations offer lower prices when you present their membership card

    · Fill your tires with Nitrogen. Nitrogen helps tires maintain the right pressure for a longer period of time as opposed to oxygen, this because nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules. So the next time you need to add air to your tires, add nitrogen.

And now for the gas-saving superstitions to avoid:

    · Opening the windows instead of using the air conditioner has no measurable effect.

    · Gas saving gadgets you can buy for your car don’t really help your gas mileage, according to the EPA.

    · Neither do gas thinners.

    · Gas is NOT cheaper mid-week.

    · Shopping around for cheaper gas DOES NOT burn more than you’ll end up saving.

What do you do to cut down costs at the pump?

    (Thanks, Diana!)

  • Tomb discovered in Ismailia

    drhawass.com

    With photos.

A new tomb was discovered by an SCA mission at Tell el-Maskhuta in the Ismailia governate, announced Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture. The tomb dates to the 19th Dynasty (1315-1201 BC), is constructed of mud brick and consists of a rectangular room with a domed ceiling made of stone, and a deep square-shaped shaft. The interior is decorated with scenes depicting the owner of the tomb, whose name was Ken-Amun.

Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, reported that this is the first Ramesside tomb to be discovered in Lower Egypt. The tomb is very high quality, and is beautifully decorated and inscribed with scenes known from the Ramesside Period, added Dr. Hawass. In addition to this tomb, the excavation has found 35 tombs dated to the Roman Period.

The excavation discovered a limestone stela inscribed with hieroglyphs containing the name of the capital of the Hyksos, Avaris (Het-Waret). The stela depicts the god Set in front of a king of Dynasty 19, whose name is not written. This stela shows the relationship between the site at Tell el-Maskhuta and the Hyksos capital Avaris, located at Tell el-Daba in Sharqiya.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Maqsud, the supervisor of the Department of Antiquities of Lower Egypt, said there was a large limestone sarcophagus found inside the tomb that belonged to the owner, Ken-Amun. He was the overseer of the royal records during the 19th Dynasty. The sarcophagus contained inscriptions on its inner and outer surfaces. The tomb walls were inscribed with the titles of the deceased and the name of his wife, Isis, who was a singer of the god Atum. The tomb is decorated in sunken relief with different religious and funerary scenes; the most important scenes were one from the Book of the Dead Chapter 125, as well as one of women mourning the dead. Other important scenes include a depiction of the goddess Hathor in the shape of a cow, emerging from the Delta marshes, as well as a scene of the four sons of Horus. The scenes and titles in the tomb show that Ken-Amun was an important man, who was in charge of keeping the royal records.

    The Boston Globe (Hadeel Al-Shalchi)

Ken-Amun’s tomb is that first Ramesside tomb to be discovered in Lower Egypt and is built from mud brick, consisting of a rectangular room with a stone-domed ceiling. Hawass said the inscriptions would aid in the understanding of Egypt’s relationships with its neighbors to the east.

Inside the tomb, the walls are decorated with reliefs of funerary scenes, including Chapter 12 of the Book of Dead — an ancient text intended to help the deceased in the afterlife — and a scene of women mourning.

The wall’s inscriptions tell that the scribe’s wife was called Isis and worked as a musician for the God Atum. A large limestone pillar also was discovered depicting the God Set, the god of darkness and chaos, in front of the 19th Dynasty king of the time, whose name was not written. On the same pillar, the name of the capital of the Hyksos — an Asiatic people who invaded the eastern Nile Delta in the 12th Dynasty was found.

    Discovery News (Rossella Lorenzi)

Beautifully decorated, the tomb features scenes from the Book of the Dead, culminating with the famous vignettes from Chapter 125, which depict the critical judgment ceremony.

Called “Weighing of the Heart,” this symbolic judgment involved weighing and comparing the deceased’s heart to a feather of Maat, goddess of Justice, Truth and Order.

If the heart is lighter than the feather, the deceased is judged worthy the company of the gods. If it fails, the heart is devoured by the crocodile-headed monster Ammit and the deceased is condemned to an existence between worlds.

Other important scenes in the tomb include a depiction of the goddess Hathor in the shape of a cow, as she emerges from the Delta marshes, as well as a scene of the four sons of Horus — Imsety, Duamutef, Hapi and Qebehsenuef.

  • Brazil appeals ruling against Belo Monte dam

Greenwire: The Brazilian government has appealed a decision that stopped bidding on the construction contract for the Belo Monte hydroelectric facility, a project in the Amazon rain forest that has drawn fierce opposition from environmentalists.

Belo Monte, which would be the world’s third largest dam if built, is seen by the government as a key provider of renewable energy for decades to come. The $11 billion, 11,000-megawatt facility would provide 6 percent of Brazil’s electricity needs by 2014, strengthening the grid in a country that experienced a massive round of blackouts last summer.

“I am confident the environmental license will be granted to Belo Monte,” said Pedro Alberto Bignelli, director of licensing at Ibama, Brazil’s environmental protection agency. “The result of three years of work and analysis will be upheld when the government appeals.”

Environmentalists and indigenous Amazon residents contend the project will destroy wildlife habitats and cause massive flooding, taking away the livelihoods of thousands of residents. It has become a cause célèbre, prompting “Avatar” director James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver to protest the project in advance of the court decision Thursday in Brasilia.

“No one is naive,” said Atossa Soltani, executive director of advocacy group Amazon Watch. “Everyone recognizes that in Brazil a decision like this could be overturned quickly, and that we haven’t won the battle yet” (Alan Clendenning, Associated Press, April 16). – GN

  • Volcanoes: The ‘X Factor’ in Climate Change

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull Volcano eruption, showing volcanic plume and lava flow spreading northeast, spilling into Hrunagil Gully. Image was acquired on March 24, 2010, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite

Numerous volcanoes  presently active and erupting across the planet will impact short-term warming and climate change. Longer-term impacts are unknown.

On March 20, after nearly 200 years of dormancy, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano started rumbling fiercely; then, the top exploded in a massive out-pouring of lava, pyro-clastic debris and sulfurous smoke and ash. The eruption, which continues into its second week, has sent a great billowing plume of ash and gas high up into the stratosphere and across thousands of miles, blanketing a large portion of Europe.

Apart from the major disruption in flight traffic and the economy, the Icelandic volcano eruption promises in the short-term to disrupt upper atmospheric circulation patterns and temperatures, with an additional impact due to sulfuric acid “nucleation” and subsequent acid rain. But the medium to long-term impacts of continuous, or increasing, volcanic eruptions is a matter of on-going scientific debate.

  • In wake of Hannity’s tea party scandal, Fox’s Kristol hypes tea party’s Contract from America

In wake of Hannity’s tea party scandal, Fox’s Kristol hypes tea party’s Contract from America

Just days after Fox News canceled Sean Hannity’s plan to host his show from a tea party event with an admission fee, Fox News contributor Bill Kristol repeatedly promoted the Contract from America, a series of agenda items whose writing was organized by a major tea party organization. Kristol’s endorsement is consistent with Fox’s heavy promotion of the tea party movement, in spite of News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch’s statement that he didn’t think the network “should be supporting the Tea Party.”

Bill Kristol: “Go online and look at” the tea party movement’s “totally mainstream” Contract from America

Kristol: Tea party movement “has a Contract from America.” On the April 18 edition of Fox News Sunday, Kristol defended the tea party movement, accusing progressives of “[an] attempt to demonize and discredit the movement and not engage it on its ideas. It has a Contract from America.”

Kristol: “Half a million people chose these items,” Contract is “totally mainstream.” Later, during the same broadcast of Fox News Sunday, Kristol stated: “And look at the Contract from America. Just go online and look at it. This is their — half a million people chose these items, totally mainstream, sensible, reformist, limited government — limited government agenda.”

Kristol: Contract from America is “a very good contract. People should look at it.” Later in the program, Kristol stated, “I think one of the items in the Contract from America, if I can come back to the tea parties one last time — it’s a very good contract. People should look at it — is tax reform.” Asked about the need for “spending cuts,” Kristol later added, “That’s also in the Contract from America.”

Days before, Hannity pulled from tea party event after ethical questions raised

Event caused Fox execs “consternation” due to network’s “perceived closeness to… the Tea Party Movement.” Hannity was scheduled to tape his April 15 Fox News show at the Cincinnati Tea Party’s (CTP) 2010 Tax Day Tea Party, which required paid admission, with higher prices charged for better viewing of the program and “all proceeds” benefiting CTP. But after journalism veterans heavily promoted and advocated for the April 15, 2009 tea parties, which it characterized as a response to Obama administration policies. Fox News frequently aired segments — from both opinion and news personalities — publicizing the protests and encouraged viewers to get involved with them. In many instances, Fox News provided attendance and organizing information, such as dates, locations and website URLs. In early April, Fox News announced that four hosts from the network — Glenn Beck, Neil Cavuto, Greta Van Susteren, and Hannity — would appear live at four tea party sites and would broadcast the protests live throughout the day. At one point, Fox News even referred to the tea parties as “FNC Tax Day Tea Parties,” and The Fox Nation also hosted its own “virtual tea party.”

Fox News aired over 100 commercial promotions and over 20 segments in less than two weeks. From April 6 to April 13, 2009, Fox News featured at least 20 segments on the protests, and from April 6 to April 15, Fox News aired at least 107 commercial promotions for its coverage of the protests. On the April 15 edition of CNN Newsroom, media critic and Reliable Sources host Howard Kurtz said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a news network throw its weight behind a protest like we are seeing in the past few weeks with Fox and these tea parties.”

Fox News’ coverage boosted protests, pushed other outlets to cover. On the April 18, 2009 edition of Fox News Watch, host Jon Scott asked: “Did the FOX coverage and promotion of the coverage, did it force the other networks to pay attention to it?” Then-Fox News contributor Jane Hall replied: “I think it did because the other TV networks ended up leading with it.” Dozens of national and local news reports credited Fox News for publicizing and boosting the protests. Indeed, the Odessa (Texas) American reported of a rally outside Odessa City Hall: “Statements like ‘I saw it on Fox’ were heard around the crowd.”

Fox News heavily promoted Tea Party Express. Leading up to the August 28, 2009, kickoff of the Tea Party Express — a bus tour organized by a Republican PAC and dedicated to opposing President Obama and the Democrats — Fox News, Fox Business, The Fox Nation, and FoxNews.com repeatedly promoted the tour, informing viewers of the tea party dates and locations to “they can be a part” of events. Fox News sent two reporters to the Tea Party Express kickoff event in Sacramento, and embedded correspondent Griff Jenkins on the tour, who went so far as to cheerlead for the protests.

Fox News hosts and contributors were scheduled to participate in 2010 Tax Day Tea Party events. Fox News hosts and contributors were slated to participate in more than a dozen tea party events surrounding Tax Day 2010. Host and Fox Business Vice President Neil Cavuto broadcast his April 15 Fox News and Fox Business shows from the Atlanta Tea Party. Hannity was scheduled to tape his April 15 show at a Cincinnati event which would have funneled proceeds to the CTP, but his appearance was canceled amid a firestorm of criticism.

Murdoch: Fox News shouldn’t be “supporting the Tea Party”

At an April 7 event at the National Press Club, responding to a question from Media Matters for America’s Ari Rabin-Havt regarding Fox News’ coverage of the tea party movement, Murdoch stated that he didn’t think Fox News “should be supporting the Tea Party or any party” but would like to “investigate” “before condemning anyone.”

Contract from America’s “Founding Partners” include major right-wing organizations

Officials with Armey’s FreedomWorks, Gingrich’s American Solutions “instrumental” in writing of Contract. Kristol suggested that the Contract from America was entirety a creation of grassroots tea party activists. But while the Contract is described on its website as a “grassroots-generated, crowd-sourced, bottom-up” and “decentralized” document whose creation was organized by the organization Tea Party Patriots, many of the Contract’s “Founding Partners” are major right-wing organizations, including former House Speaker and current Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich’s American Solutions for Winning the Future, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks, the National Taxpayer’s Union, Americans for Tax Reform, and The Heartland Institute. Indeed, according to the Contract’s website:

Adam Brandon, Max Pappas, and Tabitha Hale of FreedomWorks have been instrumental in helping organize and unite a broad-based coalition of grassroots organizations, new media outlets, and public policy experts behind the Contract from America, as have Adam Radman with Americans for Tax Reform, Andrew Moylan with National Taxpayers’ Union, Ginni Thomas with Liberty Central, Adam Waldeck with American Solutions, and Lori Roman with Regular Folks United.

  • Rising Anti-Westernism in Afghanistan

There is a creeping and rapidly growing anti-western sentiment developing among Afghanistan political elite that runs far deeper than just the recent flap over President Karzai jokes about joining the Taliban.

KABUL- In recent weeks, Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s anti-western behavior has become well known to even the most casual observers of Afghanistan. First, he stood next to, and appeared to agree with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the Iranian President called America and its international allies fighting in Afghanistan “occupiers.” Days later, Karzai told supporters in a closed door meeting he might consider joining the Taliban if his western partners didn’t stop pushing him to clean up government corruption and interfering in Afghan affairs. The White House was so angry at Karzai’s actions, it threatened to withdraw his invitation to visit Washington later this Spring.

US officials have since come to the defense of Karzai –trying to smooth over the rocky relationship. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Karzai a “reliable partner,” and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Karzai has an excellent relationship with Gen. Stanley McChrystal. While the Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke told reporters in Kabul that Karzai’s comments were misinterpreted.

But Karzai’s comments are only the tip of the iceberg of a growing anti-western sentiment brewing in Afghanistan’s capital. Since being sworn in for a second term last November, Karzai’s government has significantly made life more difficult for the western community supporting his fledgling government – for no apparent reason.

International contractors, who do much of the work in Afghan Ministries, complain that getting work permits and visas for western employees is becoming significantly more difficult.

“Compared to what we had to deal with just last year, the obstacles are great, and getting worse,” said one western contractor who asked not to be identified.

Under the guise of security and in an effort to check the validity of foreign visas, the Afghan National Police have set up dozens of additional check points in western areas of Kabul stopping and searching western vehicles – including both diplomatic and military.

According to several military officials, clearly marked NATO vehicles have been stopped and searched – with police even “trying to confiscate NATO equipment from vehicles.”

In March, Afghan intelligence officials informed foreign journalists that they would no longer be able to film or televise insurgent attacks –adding that media organizations that refuse to comply will be punished.

This week, Afghan police raided four Western restaurants, confiscating thousands of dollars and gallons worth of alcohol and arrested at least six people. Police charged several of the foreign waitresses arrested from a restaurant popular with diplomats with prostitution.

Under Afghan law, selling and consuming alcohol is prohibited but Afghan authorities have always made an exception for foreigners.

“Foreigners are not covered by this law,” said Mohammed Nabi Farahi, the deputy Culture Minister told the Times of London. “That’s why they have permission to drink alcohol in restaurants that have permits from the Ministry of Information and Culture and to sell alcohol, just to foreigners.”

Afghan officials have yet to explain why the raids happened now but increasingly there is a growing concern that this is only the beginning of raids targeting Westerns. NATO recently warned its civilian staff to avoid western restaurants because of the uncertainty surrounding the raids.

It’s unclear if all of these events are connected or even part of some grand plan. Afghan authorities rarely, if every, explain their actions. Like any good conspiracy, there are people who vehemently believe and deny it.  Perhaps the only concrete truth is that the relationship between the international community and the Afghan government is as bad as it’s ever been- and getting worse.

  • Beating Reid Has Long Been Top Priority For Tea Party Express, Memo Shows

Beating Reid Has Long Been Top Priority For Tea Party Express, Memo Shows
The defeat of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was from the outset perhaps the top priority of the Tea Party Express, according to an internal memo. The group’s focus on unseating the Democratic Senate leader appears to bolster the charge that its priorities dovetail more closely with those of the Republican party than with the more independent Tea Party movement.

  • Abandoned oil fields pose threats from leaking gas, fires

Greenwire: Texas officials are urging lawmakers to crack down on oil field practices that have left some Exxon Mobil Corp. fields with leaking pipelines, wells and storage tanks. The country’s biggest oil producer has left a stretch of Texas unkempt, leaving residents in danger of explosions and gas fires. Exxon has tried to keep the chemical leaks buried in court while it embarks on a new phase of exploration nearby.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress is considering stricter drilling regulations, which many say are needed to ensure that companies are not constantly cleaning up old messes. U.S. EPA says it currently has no authority to force companies to clean up their active fields and instead defers to state regulators, who often let oil companies decide if cleanup is necessary.

Elizabeth and Stephen Burns, who own a ranch near some of Exxon’s old fields, are filing suit against Exxon and Chevron Corp., which owns a smaller section. The suit alleges the companies did not keep their equipment away from vegetation, damaging thousands of acres of land. If found guilty, the two companies would be on the hook for cleanup costs, which could run in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Exxon said it has already spent $1.6 million at the ranch and is conducting soil and water tests to head off environmental threats.

But there are more than 100,000 wells in Texas alone that have not been capped, as well as thousands of abandoned processing plants and compressor stations. That is largely a result of lax environmental restrictions in the 1950s and ’60s when oil companies were entering the state.

California, the third-largest oil producing state, has recently stepped up efforts to force oil companies to clean up their fields, and Pennsylvania has set up restrictions on new oil projects and has stepped up enforcement (Joe Carroll, Bloomberg, April 16). – JP

  • Lonely Planet Turns Eyjafjallajökull In To An iTunes Opportunity

    Lonely Planet travel guide

Cynical exploitation of Mother Nature, or a canny free offer to tempt customers… ?

BBC Worldwide-owned Lonely Planet says it is dropping prices from 13 of its iPhone travel guides, from Amsterdam to Vienna, for “stranded travelers”, until this Thursday, April 22.

The guides usually cost £9.49/€12.99/$15.99, so it’s a significant saving. But, since European mobile roaming prices are still hefty, mobile users who download a city guide whilst stuck abroad may well be charged a considerable amount all the same.

“If the disruption continues we may look at extending this,” Lonely Planet tells paidContent:UK.

This, of course, is just a standard limited-window free sweetener. Lonely Planet’s apps don’t currently figure in iTunes Store’s top 25 travel apps chart – if people like the free app, maybe they’ll pay the next time they visit an overseas city. Likewise, BSkyB (NYSE: BSY) made a selection of its premium shows free on Freeview Sky 3 this weekend…

But it’s the first time we’ve seen an erupting Icelandic volcano being used as the basis.

Apps by British Airways, Heathrow and flight checkers like TripTracker, FlightTrack, iFlight and UK Flights are currently popular in iTunes’ travel chart, along with Live ATC Air Radio, which lets passengers listen to air traffic control.
