  • Brown and Wild Rice Salad: Healthy Leftover Recipe

Clients often complain that preparing any meal that requires more work beyond removing a wrapper and throwing a pre-made meal in the oven or microwave is going to add stress and complication to their day.

These are often the same clients who complain of having no energy, lacklustre sex drive and little zest for life. What I tell them, time after time is that you must eat food that energizes you, fires up your metabolism and feeds your cells and eating packaged and processed foods will not do any of that!

That said, I understand that cooking after an eight or nine hour day isn’t always an attractive endeavour. My solution: take advantage of leftovers. This strategy works magic for me as I rarely ever spend more than 15 minutes in my kitchen. As much as I love to cook and bake, I much prefer to socialize with my dinner guest or family, rather than be chained to my kitchen counter.

The other night I made brown and wild rice, a dish that takes about 25 minutes and only requires a couple stirs. I served it with fish and a mixed green salad, in other words, an easy, fresh, spring-like dinner. And, as a bonus, I got another meal out of it as the next day I whipped up this little number. This is a great recipe (sans goat cheese), if you’re following our 30-Day Nutrition Challenge.

    Recipe after the jump.

  • Decisions, decisions

The New York Times has a review of a new book called ‘The Art of Choosing’, by psychologist Sheena Iyengar, that tackles the psychology of choice and decision-making. I’ve not read the book myself but the review is very positive and like all good book reviews, it is full of interesting snippets and is worth reading in itself.

I didn’t recognise the author at first but she has done some fantastic work and is responsible for the classic experiment where a stall selling many varieties of jam had more people stop to look but sold little, where a stall with only a few varieties had fewer browsers but when they did stop they were much more likely to buy something.

This is among the many curiosities of decision-making (e.g. we say we want more options but we are consistently happier with our choice when we have only a limited selection) but the book seems to go further and discusses cultural differences in how we make and even define choices:

Take a mundane question: Do you choose to brush your teeth in the morning? Or do you just do it? Can a habit or custom be a choice? When Iyengar asked Japanese and American college students in Kyoto to record all the choices they made in a day, the Americans included things like brushing their teeth and hitting the snooze button. The Japanese didn’t consider those actions to be choices. The two groups lived similar lives. But they defined them differently.

It seems the book has picked up lots of good reviews so I might have to add this one to the list.

  • Weight Training: How to Determine the Weight You Should Lift

    Dear Sarah,

When I head to the gym my workout consists of mostly cardio and then I play around a little on the weight machines. I would like to get more serious about weight training, but how do I figure out how much weight to use, how many repetitions to do, how long to rest in between sets etc.? What should my goal be for getting started?

    Kelly

    Dear Kelly,

A proper weight-training routine will deliver results you never thought possible. A great starting goal is to increase muscular endurance.

Canada’ s Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Active Living recommends two to four strength-training workouts per week. Adequate rest is required between resistance training sessions in order for the muscle-building process to happen. Generally, about 48 hours between workouts is recommended, and more rest is better than not enough!

  • NASA image of Eyjafjallajökull volcano ash cloud

I do space images fairly often, here’s an image from space of the ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in Iceland:

Caption: NASA’s Terra satellite flew over the volcano on April 16 10:45 UTC (6:45 a.m. EDT) and the MODIS instrument captured a visible image of Eyjafjallajökull’s ash plume (brown cloud) stretching from the UK (left) to Germany (right).

  • MIRC project will help farmers and other businesses

KSAX out of Alexandria ran a nice story on the Blandin Foundation MIRC project, helping to announce the 4.8 million of the stimulus package that will help rural communities in Minnesota use the internet.

KSAX highlighted the potential impact on farmers in the area. I’ve written about the importance of broadband to farming communities before. There was a national research report that came out last summer (Internet’s Value for Rural America) that also highlighted some specific benefits of broadband in rural area – benefits such as telemedicine.

The Blandin Foundation maintains a whole toolkit of broadband applications that benefit individuals, families, business and communities. The toolkit is divided into five categories:

Each category contains a range of subcategories (such as teleradiology) that lead to a number of links to specific applications. Some applications are available online – some for free; others are descriptions of application or services that may be fee-based or not targeting single users (such as hospital systems). But browsing through the categories will give you an idea of some of the advantages the MIRC communities will be learning about and deploying over the next few years. They are applications that will help farmers – and more!

  • Centennial Edition: Sunday Thought For The Day

Note:  If you are having trouble viewing this video, please click here.

    Some days my vision blurred.
    Fall down.
    Am lost.
Out in this great big world.

    And still.
A guiding hand to offer help..
    A voice from distance far.
A human spirit so close to me.

    Footprints we do impart.
    A journey down this path.
A jungle, this life can seem.
Much clearer, when you're with me.

Like a sunrise in the morning,
Lighting up a brand new day.

    Your light it brightly shines,

Connecting you, your soul, to me, to mine.

    And there is peace.
    And there is love.
    And there is unity.

As I pause and reflect back over the past one hundred weeks, what I am most inspired by are the deep and caring conversations that have developed around a single thought each week.  Each one of you has been a gift.  You, who have read these words and let them touch your soul.  You, who have shared deep and meaningful comments.  You, who have shared very personal stories, both publicly and privately.  Every one of you, being here, is a gift.  A gift to me, and a gift to each other.  And the parting thought that I keep coming back to is that we are here, together, on this earth.   All of you make this life journey more meaningful for me, and for each other.  With deep gratitude, I thank you for the gifts you have so beautifully been.

    Together…we are one.

    Peace, love and unity.

    ~ Lance Ekum (April 2010)

  • Video – Verizon HTC Droid Incredible in action

Some great stuff rolls in during the wee hours, and this is a doozy.  An actual demonstration video of the one and only Droid Incredible by the fellas at nerdstalkertv, shot during the 99% conference in New York.  It’s an awful nice walk through of the software, and it really shows just how fast this phone is.  There’s not much we haven’t figured out already, but who cares?  It’s a great video of a monster of a phone and a must see.

Hit the break for the video, keep the tissues to wipe your chin handy. Thanks, Patrick!

    Verizon Droid Incredible pre-order

Not to be outdone by Best Buy, Verizon’s in the middle of sending out e-mails announcing that it’ll start taking online pre-orders for the HTC Droid Incredible starting Sunday which is just a matter of hours away. You’re still not going to get it any sooner, but you can rest easy in the knowledge that you pre-ordered as early as you could, for what that’s worth.

Also, the e-mail clears up the matter of the internal memory, noting that the listed 8 gigabytes of storage is less, confirming other reports. Thanks, Will!

  • Volcano-Stranded Travelers Turn to Social Media

The Icelandic volcano eruption that stranded hundreds of thousands of travellers in Europe and elsewhere on Friday showed no signs of letting up on the weekend, continuing to belch a plume of ash that covered much of the European continent. Airlines — which by Friday evening had already canceled more flights than at any time since the attacks of September 11 in New York — were still refusing to take bookings for new flights into next week, stranding passengers for days without connecting flights. Some took matters into their own hands: comedian and actor John Cleese, for example, hired a taxi to take him from Norway to Belgium, at a cost of almost $7,000.

Others turned to Twitter and Facebook to try and find rooms for the night, or alternate travel plans involving boats, trains and other forms of transportation. In addition to the hashtag that had quickly come to be used after the eruption on Friday — #ashtag, which continued to gain steam — another also started to take hold on Saturday: @getmehome, as well as #roadsharing and #stranded. Travellers asked for accomodations, others offered them, and groups helping those stranded co-ordinated their actions using social tools, including the Roadsharing site.

Some, like Rita J. King, CEO of Dancing Ink Productions, blogged their predicament. Others shared photos of their surroundings, or of the volcano itself, including an incredible image of lightning forking through the clouds of ash. Someone even set up a Twitter account for the ash cloud, which had over 1,000 followers by the end of Saturday. Information is Beautiful chose to look on the bright side and calculated the positive side of the lack of airplane traffic, and First Round Capital decided to have an impromptu meeting with startups, since some of the firm’s VCs were stuck in Europe by the ash cloud. The New York Times has a map of all the affected airports, which it is updating regularly as new reports come in.
