  • NASA and Chrysler team up to ‘share knowledge,’ send an electric car to the moon?

    chrysler-nasa
A vague, but potentially exciting announcement from Chrysler this week says that the automaker and NASA are pairing up to “share knowledge” and resources on advanced technologies.

The topics that this new alliance will discuss and investigate include materials engineering, robotics, radar, battery systems and other energy storage mediums.  Chrysler has obviously gained a very valuable resource for creating cutting edge (most likely electric) cars, but what’s in this partnership for NASA?

The car company says that they have a history working with NASA in their space program, specifically, building rockets and boosters for some of the manned Mercury and Apollo missions in 1961 and 1968.  Could Chrysler be offering the same type of help again?

So while the press release is vague with its mentions of “synergies and shared interest,” the possible outcomes of this partnership could be exciting.  But let’s face it — we’re ecogeeks.  Any discussion of robots, electric cars and space exploration has us giggling with anticipation.

  • Friday Practice Notes

Jeff’s bringing it again over at Fox Sports Ohio, and wraps up the Jersey Scrimmage prep with notes regarding OSU’s QB1, Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor dispelled some of the whispers that have had heard regarding his self absorption, saying that awards and accolades are not significant to him.

“I’m not cocky at all.  I think I’m more of a people-person,” said Pryor.  “I’m happy all the time and I really enjoy my teammates.  I feel great as an individual and I feel great as a quarterback.”

“(The Heisman) means nothing to me,” Pryor said quickly.  “Obviously it’s a great honor to be mentioned with all these other athletes, but my main focus is Game One and my teammates.  My teammates are more important to me than the Heisman Trophy.  Winning games is more important than the Heisman Trophy, and we have to take this one game at a time.

    Yup, he’s been Tresseled

Also according to the boss, he’s passing has improved greatly:

Down in the west end zone, Pryor was putting on a show during drills.  He was tossing passes back and forth with the other quarterbacks, and his receiver would give him a very specific target, holding his hands in one spot.  Pryor was nailing his target from 45 yards out every time.

In a video posted over at 11W, TP talks about the new NCAA rules and believes that one may have been aimed at him.

TP waxes theological a little bit, and feels that the new rule is taking away from the “fun of the game”.

Another insight from earlier in the clip- Stoneburner is a special kind of talent, and should be used more often this season.

Other quick notes– Newsome was back, but still no Duron sighting. Buchanan  is killing the ball on punts, hitting the roof of the WHAC several times.

  • Judge Rules: Drunk Moron In A Hurry Wouldn’t Know Tequila From Maker’s Mark

After seven years in the courts, a federal judge has ruled that a dripping red wax seal can only be used by Maker’s Mark bourbon. While no monetary damages were awarded, the judge issued an injunction to prevent Diageo and Casa Cuervo from using a dripping wax seal on their tequilas, specifically, their high-end tequila, Cuervo Reserva. Maker’s Mark has held the trademark (pdf) on the dripping wax since the 50s; Cuervo Reservo launched with their dripping wax design in 2001, after using a non-dripping wax seal in previous years. Call me a moron in a hurry, but these tequila bottles really don’t remind me of Maker’s Mark one bit.

That said, the injunction won’t really affect Cuervo that much right now, since they stopped the dripping wax design after 2007 in favor of a cleaner wax seal, but that might not even matter — Maker’s Mark filed a second suit in 2009, alleging that even a non-dripping bottle still infringes upon their trademark. That suit seems even more ridiculous, since wax seals are commonly used to seal not just liquors, but also anything from wine to vinegar to honey.

  • Sprint launches a 4G iPad case

    Sprint iPad Overdrive case

Oh man, do we love how hard Sprint is pushing their service, especially as it pertains to Apple devices! The latest is a new 4G case, which is basically a sleeve-style cases for the iPad that also has a pocket that is specially fitted to house a Sprint 4G hotspot. Now, Sprint is just referring to this as the “4G Case,” and they even say that it also fits the and other e-readers, but let’s call a spade a spade here, Sprint is trying to entice you to buy an iPad and Overdrive rather than an AT&T 3G iPad. We can’t say we disagree with that option either.

You can get a Sprint 4G case free with the purchase of a Sprint Overdrive at participating Best Buy locations. We called up four participating locations in the Seattle area though, and no one knew what the hell we were talking about. So, your mileage may vary.

  • New city watchdog: Employees rigged hiring, failed to disclose free trip

Posted by Hal Dardick at 7:05 p.m.

A contractor sold medical test kits paid for with city money, and city workers failed to disclose a free trip and rigged hiring, according to a report by Chicago’s new internal watchdog released at a time when aldermen are balking at being placed under his oversight.

Inspector General Joseph Ferguson’s quarterly report is more detailed than its predecessors, in keeping with Mayor Richard Daley’s request for more transparency in the office. (You can read the report by clicking here.)

“The enclosed report is the (Office of Inspector General’s) foray into a more detailed reporting regimen,” Ferguson wrote in a cover letter. The goal is to give city employees a fuller understanding of appropriate conduct, he said.

The 14-page report includes specifics of alleged wrongdoing by city employees, except for their names. Previous reports were comprised mostly of statistics.

Between Jan. 1 and March 31, the office received 431 complaints, opened 80 new investigations and referred 43 to other agencies. Meanwhile, the office resolved dozens of other pending cases dating back to 2005.

In one case, it was determined that a not-for-profit agency was submitting false documents to the Public Health Department to get funding and selling HIV test kits that the department gave to it at no cost. The agency was barred from doing business with the city, and an employee involved was suspended for three days.

In another, a city Workforce Development Office employee accepted $2,200 for an international trip and failed to disclose it as required on a statement of financial interest. The employee later resigned.

At the Water Management Department, two supervisors were involved in “a broad and sustained effort to” hire people in exchange for political favors in violation of a federal court order, according to the report. One employee resigned, and the other retired, after Ferguson’s office recommended both be fired.

In other cases, employees fraudulently altered audits, improperly accepted meals and gifts from prospective vendors and changed computerized employee time records.

Daley has suggested that aldermen be subject to investigation by Ferguson’s office, but they’ve balked at that request, saying the power could be used for political witch hunts. Some aldermen crafted a plan to hire their own inspector general, but postponed a vote earlier this week after it was criticized as weak. Among other things, the council watchdog would have had to ask permission before launching investigations.

  • Cutting Through the Fog of Google’s Cloud Print

Google introduced its new approach to printing yesterday with the announcement of Google Cloud Print. But “cloud” in this case is equating to “foggy” for some because the entire solution is still at a high-level description. A web-based printing solution hasn’t been implemented yet by Google — instead, the company is positioning for what it hopes to deliver for its Chrome OS, due out in the second half of this year. And by Google’s own admission, it’s going to need help. So for now, Google has simply outlined the plans, checked in some publicly available code and floated an innovative idea. So what is Google Cloud Print, exactly?

Essentially, Google is attempting to remove the computer from the middle of the print equation. In today’s world, we use an application to send a print job to the print server running on our computer. That software manages the task by communicating through a driver (more software) to the physical hardware of the printer. In the Google Cloud Print solution, the computer and accompanying print server software go away and are replaced by the cloud. Google handles the print job and communicates directly with a cloud-aware printer — these don’t exist yet, which is why I said the solution isn’t implemented yet. You may not need to replace your current printer with a cloud-aware one, though — Google will include a proxy software solution in the Google Chrome browser, which will register a legacy printer with the cloud.

    What’s the use case?

Trying to see through all of this the fog, I had a phone conversation with Om this afternoon and we tried to make sense of it all. On one hand, I believe that Google’s cloud printing concept has merit and solves a problem that could otherwise hamper adoption of Chrome OS devices. And yet Om made a good point with the opposite point of view: What’s the point of sending a print job up to the cloud only to pull it back down to the printer sitting three feet away? Indeed, it’s not the most effective use of valuable bandwidth, no matter how small the print job is. But I see that situation as the exception and not the rule because Chrome OS is meant for mobile use much more so than home use.

Google may ultimately want to push Chrome OS in every market it can – business, home and mobile — but I’d argue it’s best suited for mobile. Chrome OS is essentially a web browser built on a Linux core and won’t support the desktop apps found in the home and workplace. Instead, Chrome OS leverages web services and browser-based applications as shown in my early preview video. These light apps in a browser are perfect for mobile use in areas of Wi-Fi or 3G connectivity. Put another way, people using Chrome OS in the manner it’s intended won’t have as much of a printing need as desktop or laptop users, and in the rare cases they do, Google wants to be prepared. This same reasoning justifies HP’s foray into a similar offering on a smaller scale with its Mobile Printing application for Apple’s iPhone.

Does this advance printing or is Google just trying to control even more?

There’s a point to be made about Google’s control over our data and it’s a point that scares people away from using Google’s web services. I’m not one of those people as I use Google for nearly everything: personal and work email, my Android phone, document editing on my iPad and more. But I respect the people and business entities that won’t entrust their information to Google. And in fairness to those in this category, I haven’t seen anything in the limited Cloud Print documentation that pertains to data security and privacy, aside from logging in with a Google account. Since the Cloud Print idea is only just floating around now, we should be watching for how print data will be handled. For now, I can only assume that Google will maintain the same level of privacy and security that it does with its other services.

Perhaps that’s too big an assumption on my part, but once you get past it, I see some advancements in printing, which really hasn’t changed much in recent years. Once we see cloud-aware printers, what’s to stop the ones nearest to you from advertising their service? I could easily envision a “Nearby Printer Available” message on my future Chrome OS device just as I see “Nearby Wireless Network” messages on my phone, iPad and notebook today. Printing is only a localized event because printers are chained to the computer today. By breaking those chains with cloud printing, Google is simply looking forward to meeting the needs of mobile users.

2011 SMS 302 Mustang – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s been nearly a year since SMS Supercars first showed us a rendering of their proposed 460 Mustang. And we had nearly given up hope that it would ever come out. But sure enough, Steve Saleen and the rest of his crew have been hard at work developing the new SMS Mustang. That car, now named the 302 Mustang due to the V8’s displacement change for 2011, was officially unveiled today at the company’s headquarters in Corona, CA.

Two separate versions of the 302 Mustang will be offered, including a naturally aspirated base 4V model and a supercharged 302SC Mustang. The 4V will produce 440 horsepower thanks to a few powertrain tweaks, while the supercharged model will boast 535 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

Both Mustangs will have a slew of standard features including the new SMS body kit, hood with heat-extracting grilles, 20-inch wheels and tires, upgraded suspension and brakes, and numerous interior appointments including Alcantara seats, 200 mph gauges, short-throw shifter and more. The styling appears to be a mix of the previous generation Saleen Mustang, also penned by SMS designer Phil Frank, along with the new design language featured on the SMS 570 Challenger. We especially like the elongated rear end that helps hide the awkward taillights, although we would probably do away with the massive spoiler.

As you’d expect from a Steve Saleen product, each model will offer impressive performance figures. SMS quotes a 0-60 mph time of under 4.5 seconds for the base 302 Mustang while the supercharged version can perform the same task in just 4.3 seconds. A higher performance model is also in the works, named the 351X Mustang, which we should learn more about in just a few months.

Pricing for both models is just about what we would expect, which is fairly expensive. The 302 4V starts at $54,990 while the 302SC Mustang will cost $64,990. Follow the jump for more details on both cars or browse through both of the live galleries below.

California may not the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of” — unless of course we’re talking about Los Angeles — but Katy Perry still thinks her hometown deserves a new anthem.

Just like “Empire State of Mind” — the Grammy-winning hit native New Yorkers Jay-Z and Alicia Keys recorded for their beloved Big Apple last year.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Katy reveals that she has put down tracks on a single entitled “Californian Girl” — a response to “Empire State of Mind.”

“It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about LA? What about California? It’s been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the ’90s, almost house music references.”

Katy’s third album is expected later this year.

It’s easy to think of the Internet as something that’s just “out there” in cyberspace, that doesn’t effect the physical world in any tangible way. In 2009, however, it was estimated that Internet data centers worldwide consumed about 2% of global electricity production. Not only did most of that electricity undoubtedly come from non-green sources, but it also cost the global economy approximately 30 billion US dollars. Much of the electricity was needed to power the data centers’ forced air cooling systems, that keep the servers from overheating. Now, researchers from IBM Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) have devised a much more efficient method for cooling the steamy Internet – they use hot water…

Toyota Hybrid X Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

We’ve been hearing the rumors for over a year, and it’s now looking increasingly likely that Toyota is getting ready to launch a new hybrid minivan that will wear the Prius nameplate. If true, this would be the first completely new vehicle added to the Prius stable, where it would join the well-known hatchback sometime in 2011.

According to Reuters (which is citing the Japanese Nikkei), this new Prius hybrid minivan may be the first such vehicle from Toyota equipped with an in-house developed lithium ion battery pack. The three-row vehicle, which we can only presume would also have sliding doors, would potentially seat up to seven people, expanding Toyota’s hybrid technology further into the family-use market.

No other details are available other than the notion that Toyota would like to keep the price close to that of standard minivans currently on the market. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.
