  • 15 Snacks To Fuel Your Work Day

2009-09-23-NutrigrainBars1.jpgIt may be 3 Square Meals month here at The Kitchn, but I have a confession to make: I actually eat five or six meals a day! A few years ago, I did away with lunch and replaced it with a series of smaller meals or snacks between breakfast and dinner. I certainly can’t speak for everyone, but for me it was a life-changing move that keeps my blood sugar balanced and my energy level up. Whether you follow a similar eating pattern or just need something to power you through an afternoon slump, here are 15 of my favorite small meals and snacks. What are yours?

  • Motorola Twist surfaces, could be that mysterious Android slider

    Motorola Twist

Remember that mysterious Motorola Android slider that surfaced a few days ago?  The picture above might be the specifications that go along with the device.  According to the piture, the Twist (if we’re talking about the same device) includes a 700 MHz OMAP processor, 2.8-inch QVGA multitouch display, 3.0-megapixel camera, Android 1.5, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, dual-band HSPA, and 512MB ROM/256MB RAM on the memory front.

It’s no Android 2.1-powered device (just yet), but it would make for a great low to mid-range Android device on any US wireless carrier.  Anyone interested in this device?

  • Looking Back At 20 Years of Photoshop with Photoshop Product Manager Zorana Gee

photo1 Looking Back At 20 Years of Photoshop with Photoshop Product Manager Zorana Gee“The art I practice has limitless capabilities in terms of how I like to put moves together and how I’d like to react to moves thrown at me, all leading the goal of creating a beautiful and fun game to play.”
    – Capoeira1 Instructora & Photoshop Product Manager, Zorana Gee

There was an uncanny parallel between what Zorana was describing as her Capoeira practice and the underlying dynamics of her oeuvre, Photoshop. This ubiquitous digital image editing software from Adobe systems turns 20 this year. “We sometimes like to think of Photoshop as a ‘playground’ for Adobe customers.“

You can trace the element of play in the early exchanges between John and Thomas Knoll, the brothers who created Photoshop in late 1980s: Thomas, a PhD Engineering candidate, would create the program and John, his brother, a visual effects guru, would ‘play with it’ and suggest refinements. The iterative process of tinkering and refinement eventually gave birth to ‘Display’, which would later be acquired by Adobe as ‘Photoshop’. This trope also permeates the enchanting and delightfully entertaining tutorials by Russel Brown, Senior Creative Director at Adobe. Brown helps users ‘pilot’ what initially resembles the cockpit of an Airbus A380.

ps 1 box 292x300 Looking Back At 20 Years of Photoshop with Photoshop Product Manager Zorana GeeIn her almost decade-long career as Photoshop emissary, Zorana describes the remarkable and often unexpected ways in which Photoshop encourages human ingenuity and creativity “all leading to beautiful artwork.” She cites the example of Image Stacks, a feature in early versions of Adobe Creative Suite Extended; this was used initially in astronomy and later adopted by photographers to rid images of unwanted people or objects.
Zorana has been involved with Photoshop Extended since its genesis and was instrumental in the 3D effort. She continues to help drive the implementation of 3D tools within each version of Photoshop Extended. 3D visualizations became a reality in April of 2007, when Adobe released CS3 Extended software. The Extended line of software facilitated the uptake and application of Photoshop technologies in new disciplines including architecture, medical imaging, and movie animation [think models and creatures in Avatar!]. October 2008 saw the release of CS4 Extended, the next generation Extended line, which offered users more direct manipulation of 3D images. On April 12th 2010, Adobe announced the release of CS5 and CS5 Extended which incorporate “more technological advancements from Adobe Labs than any other release.”

Indeed, Photoshop CS5 Extended pushes 3D and motion-based content editing capabilities even further. For example, users can leverage Adobe Repoussé Technology, (inspired by an ancient metalworking technique for embossing art on metal), to easily create and manipulate 3D artwork and logos while other tools help enhance the appearance and realism of 3D images.

The use of 3D technology is certainly growing and expanding beyond the purview of ‘specialists.’ The inherent flexibility of Photoshop allows users “to understand the 3D tool, how object moves in 3D space, how lighting affects it.” This reflects why Steve Guttman, an original Photoshop1.0 team member, said that Photoshop ‘democratized’ image editing by making it accessible to artists rather than just those in photo production.2

“The goal is to allow people to start customizing their best idea.”zorana 222x300 Looking Back At 20 Years of Photoshop with Photoshop Product Manager Zorana Gee

Zorana’s team has been at the forefront of Adobe efforts to tap the soul of the Noosphere3 to help identify unmet needs and customer concerns which often serve as inspiration for future offerings in Photoshop.

Photoshop has almost 525K fans on Facebook, additional connections on LinkedIn, Flickr, over 15K Twitter followers and close relationships the National Association of Photoshop professionals’ 70K+ members.

This direct connection to the ‘customer voice’ allows Zorana to help the internal design teams craft newer versions of Photoshop that more closely align with customer needs.

Photoshop response to customer influence was evident most recently in the CS5 ’Just Do It’ initiative. This effort was designed to “address many of the smaller feature requests and enhancements that don’t necessarily get top billing, but definitely impact everyday workflow.” The marketing teams were able to integrate more than 30 of the most requested features from this initiative into CS5.

Adobe provides tools to facilitate even more collaborative solutions. Forums such as Adobe Labs are an ‘incubator’ for ‘Photoshop-related pre-release and experimental technologies.’.‘The Configurator panel’, for example, is an “[open source] tool that allows customers to create , test [and share]customized panels containing combinations of their own tutorial scripts with Photoshop original tools and menu commands.“

Technologic innovation in Photoshop are also the result of research partnerships between Adobe internal research teams and leading academic institutions: Collaboration with University of Washington and Columbia University yielded a technique to calibrate and remove ‘vignetting’; the gradual darkening of the image toward its periphery when aligning images for panoramas in Photoshop CS4.

Adobe tends to tantalize its customers with ‘sneak peaks’ into these forthcoming technological advancements. This was evinced in the recent pre-launch site for CS5, which invited users to an ‘exclusive online preview’ of new CS5 features. Some of these previews went viral; Adobe reported almost 2MM views of its eagerly anticipated ‘Content Aware Fill4’ feature video which also became a top trending topic on Twitter. The site featured a dramatically designed countdown clock and encouraged participation in the April 12th online global launch. There was also ample opportunity for social interaction. Some passionate users even started their own multimedia preview site CS5.org –‘independently published and intended as a public service.’

“It’s about user experience and how we can make that smarter and how we can make that more approachable for users including those who have never opened a copy of Photoshop.”

Adobe has already infused elements of predictive intelligence into the Photoshop experience. For example, the Photoshop 3D panel: “We make it easier for new users to create a 3D panel that not only links to an existing 3D panel but also shows you tools that you will need and the steps that you might want to [use].” This efficient, semantic design can show a new user not only “what they could do in 3D” but also “how to play with 3D.”

photoshop before and after 300x288 Looking Back At 20 Years of Photoshop with Photoshop Product Manager Zorana GeePhotoshop CS5 is expected to provide even “greater intelligence and awareness of the content within images.” This is illustrated most dramatically in how Content-Aware Fill technology can “remove an image element and magically replace it with details that match the lighting, tone, and noise of the surrounding area so that it looks like the content never existed.”

Perhaps this and other CS5 enhancements will provide an even more intuitive, predictive and fluid user experience.

“It is very creative, it is not choreographed…the ‘free fluidity’ that you get in a [Capoiera] game is also something that I have to be able to do in my job.”

And Zorana’s ‘job’  has allowed users to  ‘unleash their passions’. Thus, it may be fitting to end with a sentence about the history of Capoeira from the Capoierascience website: “Capoeira is celebratory of both the art itself and the community which engendered it.” Perhaps the same could be said for Photoshop.

    Footnotes:

1 “a Brazilian martial art that integrates balance, music, acrobatics, fight and dance. It is a well-balanced art form”– Zorana is an 11-year veteran of Capoeira and holds the title of Instructora, black belt equivalent.
2 From ‘Startup Memories’ a video documentary about the early days of Photoshop
3 Using this to refer to the ‘collective consciousness’ of the web which reflects users collective insights, including those from the ‘blogosphere’
4 A feature in PS CS5 Extended which “removes any image detail or object, examines the surroundings and seamlessly fills in the space left behind.”

  • Police get tough on Dodger Stadium tailgating, 132 arrested

Police promised a crackdown on tailgaters at the Dodger’s home opener — and they delivered.

A total of 132 people were arrested Tuesday, with most accused of drinking in public, said Capt. William Murphy of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Several more were arrested on suspicion of scalping tickets and illegal vending, he said. More than 50 traffic and parking citations also were handed out.

“Overall, it was a far better day than last year,” Murphy said. “No major incidents.”

Tailgating — with or without alcohol — is not allowed in the Dodger Stadium parking lots. In years past, fans say, security officers looked the other way unless they were unruly or drunk. Last year, the Dodgers made a pointed effort to crack down on drinking in stadium parking lots.

"It’s always been a rule, but it’s only recently been enforced in the last couple of years," said Carol Mitchell, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer working Monday as a security officer for the Dodgers. She said people had been generally calm and cooperative so she has tried to be equally low-key.

  • Kasey Kahne leaving Petty Motorsports, likely landing at Hendrick

Word has it the ever-voracious Hendrick Motorsports is about to sink its teeth into even more talent. Kasey Kahne just announced he won’t be renewing his contract with Richard Petty Motorsports at the end of this year, meaning the guy probably has his eyes set on making his way to the same team as Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the rest. Needless to say, the internet is rife with rumors of the move.

Kahne currently pilots the No. 9 Budweiser car, and has snapped up 11 wins during his time as a pro-driver. Despite deciding not to re-up with Richard Petty Motorsports, the King himself had nothing but praise and well-wishes for Kahne, so it doesn’t look like anyone’s left on bad terms.

The only hitch in Kahne’s rumored move to Hendrick lies in the fact that the team doesn’t have an open slot at the moment, meaning a current Hendricks driver would have to be eying another opportunity elsewhere. That doesn’t sound overly likely to us, especially considering that most of the drivers are locked into contracts that run well beyond Kahne’s supposed 2012 sign-on deal.

  • Expect a mild and short correction

There have been eight corrections of 5% to 8% since this bull market began on March 9, 2009. However, their hasn’t been a pullback in the S&P 500 of more than 1.4% since February 8 – the eighth longest streak in the past 40 years, according to Desjardins Securities.

Earnings season has been mild so far and Desjardins expects 40% year-over-year earnings growth in the first quarter of 2010. However, despite a record number of earnings beats and strong earnings growth, stocks peaked going into earnings season in both the third and fourth quarters before correcting.

“Still, the longer term driver for this market is the strongest earnings growth in 30 years, so we would take advantage of any correction to buy stocks at lower prices,” Desjardins strategist Ed Sollbach said in a research note. “We expect another great quarter for corporate earnings, the ultimate driver for stocks.

He noted that the good news is only starting to be reflected in stocks, but the new bull market has been characterized by a pattern of two steps forward and one step back.

The general sense of complacency is reflected in the lack of volatility. Mr. Sollback noted that the VIX is only at 15.5, which is its lowest level since July 2007 when the S&P 500 peaked at 1565.

The good news is that during periods without a decline of more than 1.4% the worst subsequent pullback in the following two months was 5%. The bad news is that stocks return an average of -0.7% in the subsequent two months.

The analyst added that “these streaks tend to occur early in bull markets, and that once they end, the worst-case scenario is a mild and short correction followed by a sideways move over six months.”

  • Apple Delays iPad’s International Release; Blames Higher-Than-Expected U.S. Sales

    Apple iPad With paidContent.org

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is delaying international sales of the iPad by a month, citing the “surprisingly strong” demand for iPads in the U.S. The company says it delivered more than 500,000 iPads in the U.S. during its first week, but the “demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks.” Apple says it also has taken a “large” number of pre-orders for the 3G, which it already promised for late April delivery. The result: pre-sales are pushed back to May 10 with the launch at the end of the month.

Apple described the decision as “difficult” in a media advisory but the tone isn’t abject. A cynic might think the company was hoping to create a situation where demand outstripped supply but the truth may be the more mundane reason of inventory management. Apple said it sold some 300,000 WiFi-only iPads through the April 3 U,S. launch. Last Thursday, CEO Steve Jobs said the total stood at 450,000 and that retail partner Best Buy was sold out so about 50,000 were added by week’s end. That total covers “delivered” units.

  • Google’s Twitter Timeline Lets You Explore the Past

As Google has worked to add more and more real-time search capabilities by adding content from sites like Facebook, MySpace, Buzz and Twitter, we’ve been able to see more and more what people are talking about online. Google’s latest feature, which it is announcing today, takes real-time data and puts it into a perspective we can work with – the past.

    Sponsor

Rather than letting all of this real-time data simply stream past and evaporate into thin air, Google is rolling out a “replay” feature, that lets you look at real-time data – in this case tweets – at any specific time in the past.

    google-rt-twitter-replay.png

The feature offers a timeline of tweets, showing the volume of tweets containing relevant search terms, broken down according to scale. After playing with it for a few minutes, we were able to see that it even gets as narrow as a minute-by-minute breakdown of tweets on a topic. It will be available by clicking on “Show Options” on the left side of the Google search results screen and then “Updates”.

For now, Google says that it will offer tweets going back to February 11, 2010 but will soon extend back to March 21, 2006. The company says that the feature is currently rolling out and should be available globally in English within the next few days, but you can give it a whirl before then.

As Google points out, the “replay” feature may be a great way to explore “how the news broke about health care legislation in Congress, what people were saying about Justice Paul Stevens’ retirement or what people were tweeting during your own marathon run? These are the kinds of things you can explore with the new updates mode.”

We’re looking forward to seeing what this sort of interaction with real-time data, in the aggregate, will bring to the table. It might not only be an invaluable reporting tool, but a great way to find out when a local restaurant is at its busiest.

  • Milwaukee-Area Community Seeks To Tap Lake Michigan for Water

While Waukesha’s request is the first major test of the Great Lakes Compact, the county supervisor opposes the plan.

Community Seeks To Tap Lake Michigan for WaterThe city of Waukesha, Wisconsin is seeking permission from eight Great Lakes states to draw its drinking water from Lake Michigan instead of contaminated deep-water wells.

The application is the first major test of a 2008 compact designed to protect the lakes from large diversions of water, but must win approval from state regulators to become official.

Waukesha gets most of its water from deep wells contaminated with naturally occurring radium and salt, and, as a result need to be treated to meet federal drinking water standards. After its use and treatment, the water is pumped into the Fox River, where it flows into the Mississippi River and then the Gulf of Mexico.

But the city needs to find a cleaner water supply by 2018 under a state court order.

The Waukesha Common Council voted Thursday to apply for access to Lake Michigan water under the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, a 2008 agreement to protect the lakes from large-scale water diversions. The compact requires approval from the governors of all the states that surround the lakes—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—for any withdrawals from communities that fall outside the Great Lakes basin. Waukesha sits 14 miles north from Lake Michigan’s shore, but falls within the Mississippi River basin.

The city’s plan for tapping into Lake Michigan involves building a series of pipelines to pump water from the lake and return treated water to the lake via local steams and rivers. The compact requires that water diverted from the Great Lakes be returned to the lakes.

The plan would cost an estimated $164 million, which is less expensive than continuing to pump and treat the city’s water from deep wells or obtaining water from a combination of deep and shallow wells.

Relying on deep wells would become increasingly costly due to dropping groundwater levels and the higher cost of pumping water from greater depths, the city argues. Water from deeper in the aquifer also has higher levels of radium and salt, which would lead to increasing treatment costs. Switching to shallow wells would drain water from local rivers, streams and wetlands, according to a city-commissioned study.

Waukesha’s plan has drawn opposition from the Milwaukee County supervisor, John Weishan Jr., who complained that it could contaminate the local waterways that would be used to return water to the lake. Weishan is sponsoring a resolution to block the plan.

Weishan’s resolution will be considered April 13 at the next meeting of the county’s Parks, Energy & Environment Committee. If approved by the committee, the county’s board of supervisors could vote on the resolution April 22, which is also the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

  • End the Mandate!

    By Matt Hawes

Here’s Congressman Paul’s official statement introducing HR 4995, the “End the Mandate Act.”

Madam Speaker, today I am introducing the End the Mandate Act. This legislation repeals the sections of the recently-passed health reform bill that force all Americans to purchase federally-approved health insurance plans.

Forcing every American to obtain health insurance is a blatant violation of the Constitution. Defenders of this provision claim the Congress’s constitutional authority to regulate “interstate commerce” gives Congress the power to mandate every American obtain a federally-approved health insurance plan. However, as Judge Andrew Napolitano and other distinguished legal scholars and commentators have pointed out, even the broadest definition of “regulating interstate commerce” cannot reasonably encompass forcing Americans to engage in commerce by purchasing health insurance.

Forcing every American to obtain a congressionally-approved health insurance plan is not just unconstitutional; it is a violation of the basic freedom to make our own decisions regarding how best to meet the health care needs of ourselves and our families.

Madam Speaker, the new law requires Americans to have what is defined as “minimum essential coverage.” Some people may claim that the requirement to have “minimal essential coverage” does not impose an unreasonable burden on Americans. There are two problems with this claim.

First, the very imposition of a health insurance mandate, no matter how “minimal,” violates the principles of individual liberty upon which this country was founded.

Second, the mandate is unlikely to remain “minimal” for long. The experience of states that allow their legislatures to mandate what benefits health insurance plans must cover has shown that politicizing health insurance inevitably makes health insurance more expensive. As the cost of government-mandated health insurance rises, Congress will likely respond by increasingly subsidizing health insurance for an ever increasing number of Americans.

When the cost of government-mandated insurance proves to be an unsustainable burden on individuals, small employers, and the government, Congress will likely impose price controls on medical treatments, and even go so far as to limit what procedures and treatments mandatory insurance will reimburse.

Madam Speaker, Congress made a grave error by forcing all Americans to purchase health insurance. The mandate violates fundamental principles of individual liberty, and will lead to further government involvement in health care. I therefore ask all of my colleagues to join me in correcting this mistake by cosponsoring the End the Mandate Act.

This is the second Android powered television that we have seen, Google has plans of introducing their own Android-based television.

This television will make its way to 10 different countries including in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Australia, and Dubai. Unfortunately the US is not on the list, I’m sure it will make its way here through other means. This TV is designed by NCPG in Korea. This TV has an ARM processor running at 833MHz Cortex 8A, USB, HDMI, S-Video port, D-Sub, DVI, and Component. It’s also has a backlit LED, 120HZ and will feature Android 1.5. • Angelina Pivarnick Bullied By “Jersey Shore” Co-Stars

Don’t let the polyester and tawdry spray tans fool you, the guidos and guidettes of MTV’s Jersey Shore are tougher than they look. It’s a lesson that is becoming all too familiar for brunette Angelina Pivarnick, who left the first season of the show after only three episodes. Pivarnick is reportedly being bullied and harassed by her co-stars, network spies spill in a scoop from RadarOnline.com.

Tipsters say the other seven castmates are cross that Angelina is back to ride their gravy train of success after she made a run for it before the show became a ratings juggernaut and rose into the celebrity stratosphere. The Jersey Shore kids are peeved that Pivarnick was allowed back for the show’s second season despite bailing on them to run home to her then-boyfriend. We hear Snooki & Co. were being so mean to AP, that the network reportedly had to intervene to get the gang to go easy on her.

“They literally despise her and can’t understand why she’s back,” a snoop snitches. “One of the cast members said that the show didn’t even take off until she left and she still wants credit for being part of the cast.”

“The cast has been so cruel to Angelina that MTV has been forced to step in and tell them to back off,” another insider claims. “They feel that they did all the work and she just came back and wants them to welcome her back. The cast probably won’t lay off because they’ve just had it with her.”

A few months ago, Angelina complained that several members of the cast had been using email and text messages to taunt, torment, and threaten her after her departure from the show last year: “I got a text from Mike saying, ‘Be prepared to get your ass beat, you pale rat bitch’,” she explained. “‘Nobody likes you in the house’. Jenni has been telling people she wants to beat me up, and Snooki says she’s going to beat me up, too. I don’t understand why they hate me.”

The Angelina vs. The Guidos & Guidettes should make for a juicy storyline when Jersey Shore returns to MTV in July.

  • Hollywood sign supporters get 16 more days to raise funds to buy nearby land

Preservationists fighting to protect 138-acres of land near the Hollywood sign have been granted a reprieve.

They will have 16 more days to raise the $12.5 million needed to purchase the land from a group of Chicago investors.

The deadline for the sale was Wednesday, but the owners agreed to extend it until April 30, according to Los Angeles City Council Member Tom LaBonge.

The owners, Fox River Financial Resources Inc., bought the land from Howard Hughes’ estate in 2002 for $1.7 million. They put it up for sale two years ago. The property is zoned to build four luxury homes.

LaBonge said $11 million has already been raised, and $1.5 million is still needed to purchase land.

Two donors stepped forward Wednesday to help the effort.

Philanthropist Aileen Getty and the Tiffany & Co. Foundation said they would donate a $500,000 matching grant if the community raised $1 million. Getty and the Tiffany Foundation each previously donated $1 million to the campaign.

Over the weekend, supporters held a fundraiser at Lake Hollywood Park.

  • Sessions Backs Down on Mirandizing Osama Bin Laden

The first contentious moment between Attorney General Eric Holder and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) came almost three hours into today’s hearing. Asked to clarify his statement that Osama bin Laden won’t be Mirandized if he’s  somehow apprehended alive — as a way of bashing Mirandization of terrorists as a weak response — Holder replied that bin Laden wouldn’t need to be Mirandized. Incredulous, Sessions asked why that was, if the Obama administration will indeed proceed on the presumption of trying terrorists in civilian courts. “The concern [on Miranda] is whether information we might get from a person might be excluded” from trial if someone isn’t Mirandized,” Holder explained. With bin Laden, “we have sufficient information” to obtain a conviction. Because he’s admitted to 9/11!

Sessions: “I acknowledge that’s possible.” Understatement of the day.

Holder and Sessions went back and forth, with Sessions raising his voice at times. “It’s pretty clear to me you made a firm decision to go the other way, with civilian courts with all these other cases,” Sessions said, unable to box Holder in. Holder defended civilian trials for terrorists, but insisted that he will retain the right to be “flexible, pragmatic and aggressive” in deciding whether to bring charges against a terrorist in civilian courts or military commissions. The attorney general did not raise his voice.

The pop star, who’s been endorsing the Candie’s fashion line since last spring, with the brand sponsoring her Circus tour, released before-and-after-retouching photos of herself for Candie’s latest print campaign. In the unaltered swimsuit photos, she’s a little bigger, and little less smooth and every bit as hot. The photoshopped pics are glossy and gorgeous. And fantasy. I couldn’t stop comparing the two long enough to pay attention to what the ad is supposed to be selling. Shoes? Hmm. Candie’s will get lots of coverage from this stunt, and Brit Brit will earn some props. If the footwear moves, I’d say that’s a bonus.

  • Foundations’ view on broadband

Thanks to Blandin Foundation President Jim Hoolihan for pointing me to an essay in the recent Chronicle of Philanthropy by Luis Ubinas, Jim’s counterpart at Ford Foundation. Ford is committing $50-million over the next five years to help ensure that broadband access to the Internet becomes a reality for all citizens and that public-interest values in the online space itself are protected. Ubinas writes, “The effort to ensure universal access to high-speed Internet among all citizens is a critical next step to ensuring that America realizes its great aaspiration of equal opportunity for all.” He calls for a broad consensus of government and private partners “willing to stand up for the public good.” I especially like his description of the Internet as a “gateway to democratic participation, economic opportunity, and human expression.” He even calls universal acess to an open Internet “critical to the future of our country.” The good news for all of us who agree, is that Ford’s investment will help bring attention to this message. With the help of our 19 partners and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars, Blandin Foundation is humbled by the opportunity to join Ford Foundation in this important work.
