  • Feds announce $410 million for O’Hare runways

Posted by Monique Garcia at 12:14 p.m.

The expansion of O’Hare International Airport got a $410 million boost today as federal officials announced money to help build three runways.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican congressman from Peoria, joined Mayor Richard Daley, Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin at the airport to discuss the federal windfall.

The airport expansion has been running low on money because the major airlines at O’Hare are not on board with paying for the second phase.

    Zimbabwe: President Hails Senegal Ties

    Morris Mkwate
    5 April 2010
    ——————————————————————————–
THOUSANDS of Senegalese celebrated their 50th Independence Anniversary here yesterday with President Mugabe hailing the historical relations between Zimbabwe and the West African country.

President Mugabe was among the 19 African Heads of State and Government who attended the ceremony in the city centre.

Others included African Union chair and Malawi President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika; President Toumani Tourè of Mali; Gambia’s Yahya Jammeh; President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia; President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equitorial Guinea and Ivory Coast’s President Laurent Gbagbo. AU Commission chairman Dr Jean Ping was also present.

The festivities kicked off mid-morning with scores of joyous citizens lining the General Charles de Gaule Boulevard — the venue of the celebrations.

The expectant crowds were treated to cultural performances as well as displays by the country’s uniformed forces who took two hours showcasing their military might.

The airforce also wowed many with its wide range of aircraft which flew past in spectacular fashion.

Speaking on the eve of the occasion broadcast live on national television, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade announced that his country had resolved to retain control of all military bases held by former colonial power France.

The French remained in charge of the bases since the West African nation’s decolonisation in 1960.

However, most of the 1 200 French soldiers are now set to leave this year, as Senegal moves to assert its sovereignty.

“I solemnly declare that from midnight April 4 Senegal will take back all the (military) bases formerly held by France and intends to exert its sovereignty,” he said after unveiling the Monument of African Renaissance at Ouakam.

“Regarding the timeframe for the release of these bases, I have asked the prime minister and army chief of staff to begin talks with the French side.”

Over the years, this situation has appeared more and more incongruous and has often been felt by our populations, particularly young people, civil servants and the army, as an incomplete independence.”

Speaking ahead of the celebrations at a reception hosted by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador here, Mrs Gertrude Stevenson, President Mugabe described the golden jubilee as a celebration of Africa.

He said Zimbabwe and Senegal shared good historical ties dating back to the formative years of the G15 and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union.

He pointed out the need for the two countries to continue strengthening relations on various fronts, including trade.

“We are here to celebrate Senegal’s 50th Independence Anniversary and we do so whole-heartedly. Of course, it’s Africa we are celebrating and our relations with Senegal,” he said.

“We hope these relations continue to blossom and on a reciprocal basis benefit us. . .We look forward to the mission (here) doing well on the political and diplomatic front and deepening our relations with Senegal.”

Senegal gained independence in 1960 after France agreed to a power transfer pact with all of its African colonies.

The country — like its fellow Francophone States on the continent — has maintained close ties with the French in line with the agreement.

A bulk importer, some of its notable economic activities are tourism, fisheries and trade on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

The Government is focusing on infrastructural development in order to stimulate increased foreign direct investment.

Meanwhile, President Mugabe left the coastal country yesterday afternoon. He is expected to arrive home early this morning.

  • Remember, They Hate Us for Our Freedom!

    By Tim Shoemaker

Yesterday, WikiLeaks released a video called “Collateral Murder” that shows two Apache helicopters firing upon Iraqis gathering in a street in Sadr City in 2007.  Among those killed were two Reuters employees, whose cameras were allegedly mistaken for RPGs by the military personnel in the choppers.

Glenn Greenwald wrote about it yesterday, along with another incident by the US military regarding a similar matter in Afghanistan.  Writes Greenwald:

The video is truly gruesome and difficult even for the most hardened person to watch, but it should be viewed by everyone with responsibility for what the U.S. has done in Iraq and Afghanistan (i.e., every American citizen).

These are the sort of events that occur during drawn out military occupations.  We must be sure to place the blame for these incidents on the right people.  It would be easy to watch this video and blame the troops.  Instead, we must recognize that our troops are being put into these life or death scenarios where they must make split second decisions to kill or be killed because of policy decisions emanating from politicians in Washington, D.C.  Americans need to stand up and hold their elected officials accountable for keeping us in these endless engagements, otherwise you can expect more of these type of incidents to continue.

  • New MacBooks and MacBook Pros Just Around the Corner?

If you’ve been sitting there twiddling your thumbs while Apple announced the iPad, then just recently began talking about iPhone OS 4.0, then news of what’s going on with the Mac line (yes, Apple still makes computers) will probably come as a welcome surprise. A Taiwanese newspaper has a new report (Google translation) up that details some imminent changes bound for the MacBook line of notebooks.

If the reports are reliable, then it would mean that the MacBook lineup will be using Intel’s line of i3, i5 and i7 chips as some earlier rumors speculated. The reason we haven’t seen them yet, according to the Taiwanese publication Apple Daily, is that supply has been short thanks to a large order including all three of the models from computer maker Acer.

The report claims that all of Apple’s MacBook computers, from the MacBook itself, through the Pro line and to the Air, could see updates in April, with the Intel processor change the most significant alteration. That’s not all, though. New MacBook Pro systems will reportedly have 640GB drives installed by default, with the option to upgrade to a 248GB solid state drive. If pricing remains reasonable, it could mark the first time SSDs represent a viable alternative to standard HDDs for the average consumer.

All-day computing is another detail the report claims for the upcoming computers, with a reported eight hours of battery life. Better power management might be due only to the increased energy efficiency offered by the i3, i5 and i7 chips, rather than through any major advancements in battery technology by Apple.

Apple’s MacBook line is definitely in need of an update. The last time any of the computers was updated was in October 2009, and that was a fairly minor update to the base model MacBook. MacBook Pros haven’t seen any changes since June of last year, when I purchased mine. The MacBook Air was updated at the same time.

Since then, the iPad has essentially hogged the entire Apple product spotlight. Rumors of its impending arrival fomented for months and months, and its official announcement and release schedule has all but occluded Apple’s other offerings. I’m glad Apple’s doing well in the mobile market, since it means my iPhone’s software will not fall into neglect anytime soon, but I fear there’s too much at risk if Cupertino continues to stake its future on mobile tunnel vision.

Some of us were Mac users before the iPod, and will continue to be even if Google wins the battle for mobile market supremacy. Let’s hope Apple remembers that and rewards us with its next salvo of MacBook updates.

  • Sorry Natural Gas Bulls, Now We KNOW That EIA Revision Was A Big Fat Nothing (UNG)

    Natural Gas

Earlier this week there was some chatter about how the Energy Information Agency had discovered a flaw in its accounting of natural gas in the ground, and that potentially there could be a lot less than thought.

Actually, all everyone says is that there’s “unlimited” natural gas out there, so just the mere suggestion that the supply was finite seemed to be a really big deal.

    Well, it seemed to be.

But we noted that the market wasn’t reacting to the news at all. And beyond that, the real story right now is that natural gas storage facilities filled to the brim, so it really doesn’t matter how much there is in the ground for the foreseeable future, so long as there’s no place to store it.

And now it’s come full circle.

Check out what the EIA reported today in its short-term energy outlook:

EIA expects the Henry Hub natural gas spot price to average $4.44 per million Btu (MMBtu) this year, a $0.49-per-MMBtu increase over the 2009 average, but a significant downward revision from the $5.17 per MMBtu projected in last month’s OutlookThe price outlook is lower primarily because of an average 2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) upward revision to the 2010 domestic natural gas production forecast.

So there’s MORE gas coming than thought. Perhaps by some measure there isn’t an infinite amount of natural gas in the ground, but in the meantime, storage facilities are bursting at the seems, and pumping is increasing.

Just more pain for longsuffering UNG (UNG) holders.

Until we actually have a way of turning all the natural gas in the ground into usable fuel for the economy, then this issue will persist (or so it would seem), and sadly the T. Boone Pickens-approved natural gas bill won’t accomplish jack.

  • Remarks by the President at Easter Prayer Breakfast

    04.06.10 06:48 AM

    9:50 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning, everybody. (Applause.) Thank you. Please have a seat. Have a seat. What a great honor and pleasure it is to have all of you here today. Before I begin, I want to just acknowledge two members of my Cabinet who I believe are here — Secretary Gary Locke — is that correct? Where’s Gary? There he is — our Commerce Secretary. (Applause.) And Secretary Janet Napolitano, who’s keeping us safe each and every day. (Applause.)

I also want to acknowledge the Mount Ennon Clinton Children’s Chorus for being here. They’re going to be giving us a medley later on. There they are up there, looking very serious. (Applause.)

Before I begin, I want to send my deepest condolences, our thoughts and prayers to the families and the friends of the workers who lost their lives after an explosion took place in a West Virginia mine yesterday. At this moment, there are still people missing. There are rescue teams that are searching tirelessly and courageously to find them.

I spoke with Governor Manchin of West Virginia last night and told him that the federal government stands ready to offer whatever assistance is needed in this rescue effort. So I would ask the faithful who’ve gathered here this morning to pray for the safe return of the missing, the men and women who put their lives on the line to save them, and the souls of those who have been lost in this tragic accident. May they rest in peace, and may their families find comfort in the hard days ahead.

One of my hopes upon taking this office was to make the White House a place where all people would feel welcome. To that end, we held a Seder here to mark the first Passover. We held an Iftar here with Muslim Americans to break the daily fast during Ramadan. And today, I’m particularly blessed to welcome you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, for this Easter breakfast.

With us are Christian leaders from all across America, men and women who lead small-town churches and big-city congregations, and major organizations in service of others; folks whose sermons are heard and whose examples are followed by millions all across the country. So I wanted to join you for a brief moment today to continue the Easter celebration of our risen Savior, and to reflect on the work to which His promise calls all of us.

I can’t tell any of you anything about Easter that you don’t already know. (Laughter.) I can’t shed light on centuries of scriptural interpretation or bring any new understandings to those of you who reflect on Easter’s meaning each and every year and each and every day. But what I can do is tell you what draws me to this holy day and what lesson I take from Christ’s sacrifice and what inspires me about the story of the resurrection.

For even after the passage of 2,000 years, we can still picture the moment in our mind’s eye. The young man from Nazareth marched through Jerusalem; object of scorn and derision and abuse and torture by an empire. The agony of crucifixion amid the cries of thieves. The discovery, just three days later, that would forever alter our world — that the Son of Man was not to be found in His tomb and that Jesus Christ had risen.

We are awed by the grace He showed even to those who would have killed Him. We are thankful for the sacrifice He gave for the sins of humanity. And we glory in the promise of redemption in the resurrection.

And such a promise is one of life’s great blessings, because, as I am continually learning, we are, each of us, imperfect. Each of us errs — by accident or by design. Each of us falls short of how we ought to live. And selfishness and pride are vices that afflict us all.

It’s not easy to purge these afflictions, to achieve redemption. But as Christians, we believe that redemption can be delivered — by faith in Jesus Christ. And the possibility of redemption can make straight the crookedness of a character; make whole the incompleteness of a soul. Redemption makes life, however fleeting here on Earth, resound with eternal hope.

Of all the stories passed down through the gospels, this one in particular speaks to me during this season. And I think of hanging — watching Christ hang from the cross, enduring the final seconds of His passion. He summoned what remained of His strength to utter a few last words before He breathed His last breath.

“Father,” He said, “into your hands I commit my spirit.” Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. These words were spoken by our Lord and Savior, but they can just as truly be spoken by every one of us here today. Their meaning can just as truly be lived out by all of God’s children.

So, on this day, let us commit our spirit to the pursuit of a life that is true, to act justly and to love mercy and walk humbly with the Lord. And when we falter, as we will, let redemption — through commitment and through perseverance and through faith — be our abiding hope and fervent prayer.

Many of you are living out that commitment every day. So we want to honor you through this brief program, celebrating both the meaning of Easter and the spirit of service that embodies so much of your work. And our first celebrant today is Reverend Dr. Cynthia Hale, who will deliver our opening prayer.

Thank you all for being here. (Applause.)

    04.05.10 03:13 PM

    Dear Madam Speaker:

I ask the Congress to consider the enclosed amendment to Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 proposals in my FY 2011 Budget. In particular, I am requesting authority to allow the Department of Defense to transfer up to $50 million of funds that will expire in FY 2010 to the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration for improvements to the Port of Guam. Modernization of the Port is a critical prerequisite for the military construction program supporting the realignment of U.S. Marine Corps forces from Japan to Guam, a part of the overall U.S. strategy for military forces in the Pacific region.

In addition, this transmittal contains a FY 2010 proposal for the Legislative Branch. As a matter of comity between branches, appropriations requests of the Legislative Branch are transmitted without change.

The details of this amendment are set forth in the enclosed letter from the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

  • Detectives Arrest Thief in Library Sting

    04.06.10 07:29 AM
Los Angeles: Los Angeles police detectives arrested a 43-year-old career criminal in a sting at the downtown Central Library yesterday, April 1, 2010, after he swiped an Ipod, placed on a table by an undercover cop.“Thefts at the library are too common place, and we want to send a message to thieves: think twice before you take someone’s stuff.”Undercover officers cased the library over several days, talking to security officers and watching patrons, to figure out the best, or worst, place to set one’s computer, Ipod, or purse. “In this instance, it was a third-floor end table, near the bathrooms and elevators, around 5PM,” Lt. Vernon explained. An undercover officer set a laptop on the table, then an Ipod on top of the computer and walked away. In a matter of minutes, Anthony Eugene Johnson approached the table twice, intent on the items. On a third pass, he emerged from the stacks, then nonchalantly picked up the Ipod and placed it in his jacket pocket. Officers followed him through the library for several minutes then arrested him when he sat down with his own laptop. The officers discovered the Ipod among the book shelves where Johnson had stashed it.The detectives booked Johnson on a felony for committing a petty theft with a prior conviction. His bail was set at $20,000.In 2009, thefts at the Central Library jumped from 35 to 47, a 35% increase. Bike thefts more than doubled to eight for the year. The most common items taken at the library are personal electronic gadgets: laptops, Ipods, and cell phones. For the first 3 months of 2010, thefts at the library have dropped from 16 last year to 9 this year. Four patrons have discovered their bicycles stolen from the racks outside the library so far this year.“We want to scare the crooks into thinking that anytime they grab an Ipod, it might belong to a cop,” Lt. Vernon said. “And we want the patrons to be more aware. I’d love to see every reading table have a sign to warn visitors to watch their stuff.”Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call Central Area Detectives at 213-972-1231. The high Court, absent any physical means to force a commander in chief to obey its order, could do little in the face of Jacksonâ??s defiance. The government of the District of Columbia in 2010 is emulating Jacksonâ??s defiant attitude. The issue involves the extent to which law-abiding citizens in the nationâ??s capitol â?? which has long been a city that believes the safest citizenry is a disarmed citizenry â?? may possess a firearm in their own home.
