  • Keen Home Launches Crowdfunding Campaign For Its Connected Central Heating And Cooling Vents

    Keen-home

Disrupt NY 2013′s Startup Battlefield competition is underway, and now New York native Keen Home is taking the stage to present its first-round pitch. Keen Home is a home automation startup, which aims to follow in Nest’s footsteps by building remote vents for your central air conditioning and heating systems that can be controlled from your smartphone to optimally direct air where you actually need it — and away from places you don’t. Keen just launched its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.

Keen Home is the brainchild of Ryan Fant and Nayeem Hussain, both of whom have experience founding companies in the home real estate and property-management space. The two believe their startup can appeal to consumers who want both more convenience in managing their home’s HVAC systems, and who want to save money and conserve energy. Keen Home’s debut product, the Keen Vent, accomplishes both.

The idea came from Fant noticing that when vents were closed in other rooms, heating and cooling the one he was currently in became much easier. The problem is that those vents generally operate separately, and manually, in most homes. Even with some systems that provide a remote, like Activent, they aren’t centrally controlled in a way that makes them individually manageable from an existing device like a smartphone.

“We found that just by closing four vents in an average-sized home, we’ve reduced the run time of the furnace by about 30 percent,” Fant explained in an interview. “So not only were we redirecting air to rooms that were actually in use by intelligently closing vents, we were increasing efficiency, as well.”

Keen believes that the focus is always on the thermostat when it comes to home heating and cooling efficiency solutions, which is good but it ignores other parts of the problem. The Keen Vent solves that, by providing both a user-guided and automated way of opening and closing vents to change how air flows through a home. A homeowner can set a schedule for individual vents, too, and it can plug into weather data to respond intelligently to changing conditions.

Fant says the Keen Vent can provide up to 32 percent reduction in run time for HVAC systems, which means lower monthly bills and less toll on the environment. Most heating and cooling vents in households are around 60 years old, Keen Home said on stage during their Disrupt Battlefield presentation on Monday.

Individual vent covers will cost around $40 per vent, Keen predicts, with a $150 charge for the system in total. There’s also a recurring fee of around $4 per month for access to the cloud-based management platform, which also provides monthly reports. But Fant and Hussain plan to partner with utility companies and homebuilders to try to offer the tech initially at a discount price, perhaps with, say, six months of service rolled into a new construction. It’s the same model that satellite radio provider Sirius/XM uses to sell subscriptions with new cars.

Keen Home is launching its Keen Vent product on Indiegogo today, and believes that seeking crowdfunding, as well as traditional investment, will help it get the word out and prove product viability. Its biggest challenges will be proving to users that a recurring subscription around centralized vent control is worth the cost, and in making sure that legacy players like Honeywell don’t swoop in and simply build their own similar systems. The team says that being aggressive with partnerships with big utility companies, the way others like Nest and thinkeco have done in the past, will be the key to making sure it can overcome both.

Keen said on stage that the majority of its audience would be people who don’t know what a smart home is, so they tried to make sure it was as easy to install as possible. That’s why they’ve made the install process as simple as possible, and setting up the online dashboard involves only entering a code and then doing a roughly 15 question survey. In addition, they’re planning to partner with HVAC contractors to take care of more complicated installs. Battery life is expected to be around a year for the vents, so it’d be roughly equivalent to changing the power source on devices like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Best Android camera apps [April 2013]

    android photography camera

The best camera is the one you have with you and we pretty much always have our smartphones with us. With many Android phones, the camera alone will sell the device for some customers. Needless to say, there are plenty of apps in the Play Store that cater to all kinds of shutterbugs and their smartphone cameras for when the built-in camera application on your phone just doesn’t cut it. So, in this guide, we’re going to go over the best camera apps for your device.

    camera zoom fx

Camera Zoom FX is one of the most popular camera applications on the Play Store and for good reason. It combines a full suite of extra camera functions with a ton of photo editing options for one of the most feature-rich applications you can find. If you’re looking for just a solid camera replacement, this app has everything you can think of. It fully supports the regular zoom of your smartphone’s lens, as well as your phone’s front-facing camera, and throws in lots of extra features your OEM camera software probably doesn’t have. Plus you won’t lose any control over things like your ISO settings, exposure, contrast, brightness, etc.

Camera Zoom FX supports complete hardware customization, so if you want to reassign your volume rocker to a dedicated camera button, you can. Maybe you don’t want to actually touch the phone to take pictures? There’s an option for voice activated shots. It’s also advertised as one of the fastest cameras for Android devices, as the burst shot mode takes up to 10 shots per second. In addition to the traditional burst shot, there are also time lapse shots, collage shots, and tons of live effects to stick on your photos. And if you’re the type who likes to share photos quickly with friends, there’s one-tap sharing to all of your favorite social sites.

Camera Zoom FX runs $2.99, but it’s more than worth the price for all the features. Best of all, there’s several add-on apps available for free from the developer to extend what the app can do.

    pudding camera

Pudding Camera is a unique camera replacement that lets you mix and match different kinds of film and camera to get a certain effect on pictures. There are 9 different camera types to pick from and 8 different kinds of film to use, which creates tons of different possibilities to make different or unique shots.

Different camera types take different shots. Your basic camera takes a standard 4:3 aspect ratio shot or you can use a 45mm snap camera with a 3:2 aspect ratio. There are also more creative and useful cameras, such as the motion camera, which takes four pictures of a subject moving across the picture. It then stitches all four shots together into a single picture. There are fish-eye lenses, panoramic shots, and other types of motion cameras.

On top of picking your specific camera, you can also change the film you’re using. Maybe you’re going for a really retro shot or you just want colors to pop more. You can easily switch to vintage film for an old-school look or vivid film to make things a bit more colorful. Combine all the different types of film with the camera selection, and you can easily spice up your average pictures.

Unfortunately, Pudding Camera can’t take video and you do lose some fine-tuning control in the settings that you normally get with your stock camera, but if you’re just looking for something basic that easily makes your pictures look a bit more exciting, Pudding Camera is worth taking a look at. Besides, it’s free.

    retro camera

Retro camera is a great, polished camera replacement to get an old school feel to your photos, with six different cameras to select from. It’s a pretty specific app that really only does the old-school shots, so you wouldn’t want to use it as a complete camera replacement, but more of a complementary camera app to what you’re already using.

The interface is pretty simple and gives you a shutter button, a menu button to select a different camera, a toggle for color photos or black and white photos, an info button about your currently selected camera, and a gallery button. The entire UI changes depending on which camera you’re currently using, but the buttons more or less stay the same and keep their functions. Overall, it’s a really well designed app that’s a ton of fun to use, especially if you want the camera app to apply effects to your photos instead of manually doing the work post-shot.

If you enjoy sharing your photos with the world, there are also some links in the app to share your best shots to Retro Camera’s Facebook wall. Those photos are public for other people to look at, and you can check the wall to see what other people are taking pictures of. It’s a nice touch to add an element of social networking into a camera application.

    camera JB

Maybe you’ve tried the other camera apps and you really just want something simple and straightforward to take pictures. Not too many unnecessary settings, no crazy filters, just a camera application.

Camera JB+ is the stock Android Jelly Bean camera for any Android device running 4.0.3 or higher. So if you’ve got a device that your OEM or carrier won’t update, or you’re stuck with an OEM skin but you want a stock Android camera experience, this is the way to go. It doesn’t include Photo Sphere, unfortunately, but it has all the same features that the stock camera does otherwise, including pinch to zoom, photo, video, and panoramic modes, and a burst mode. It also includes the ability to swipe left or right to immediately start checking out your latest photos.

The app does also come bundled with a small photo editor for your pictures. It doesn’t have as many filters and borders as some other apps, but if you’re just looking for subtle effects to touch up your pictures, it’s excellent. It can even trim videos, which is something none of the other applications can do. The app only costs $1.99, but there’s an older version of the Ice Cream Sandwich stock camera you can try out first if you’re still unsure.

There are countless photography apps on the Play Store, and Google regularly shows off the best of the best. These four apps cover a broad range of what you can do with your smartphone camera, but there’s plenty more apps that specialize in certain kinds of pictures if none of these quite fit what you’re trying to do. Let us know in the comments if we missed one of your favorite camera apps.

  • Remember: DOE rejected most of the electric car startups that wanted loans

The Fisker debacle is shining a spotlight on the influence that venture capitalists have had — or have attempted to have — on government support. The Wall Street Journal published a piece late last week highlighting emails from Kleiner Perkins partner Ray Lane asking for movement on approval of a loan from the Department of Energy for fuel efficient car startup Next AutoWorks (formerly called V-Vehicle).

V-Vehicle: DOE Decides Against Loan for Stealthy Car Startup

Next AutoWorks didn’t receive the loan. And rightly so. Next AutoWorks made Fisker look like a good idea (both companies were backed by Kleiner Perkins, by the way). The company struggled right out of the gate with its gas-sipping, low cost, plastic car, and never went anywhere with it.

But there were another almost half dozen alternative vehicle startups that asked the DOE for loans out of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program (created in 2007 and funded in 2008) but that didn’t receive loans: Bright Automotive, Aptera, Coda, Think, and Carbon Motors. And these are just companies that publicly discussed the loans with the media.

Car startup Loan status Car Cars produced Private backers
Tesla Motors Awarded, $465M, full payment received. All electric sedan the Model S. Previously made all electric Roadster. Have reached a rate of 20K Model S cars per year DFJ, VantagePoint, DBL Investors.
Fisker Automotive Awarded, $529M, $192M received. Extended range electric car the Karma, and lower priced Atlantic. 2K Karmas made, zero Atlantics Kleiner Perkins, NEA, broker Advanced Equities.
Bright Automotive Not awarded, applied for $450M loan. plug-in hybrid IDEA light cargo fleet vehicle None, shut down Feb 2012 spinoff non-profit Rocky Mountain Institute, GM Ventures
Aptera Not awarded, applied for a $150M loan. 3-wheeled and 4-wheeled all-electric tear drop shaped car None, shut down Dec. 2011 Idea Lab, NRG Energy, Google.org
Next AutoWorks (formerly V-Vehicle) Not awarded, applied for $321M loan. Fuel efficient, cheap, plastic four-seater None, cancelled factory late 2011. Google Ventures, T. Boone Pickens, Kleiner Perkins
Coda Not awarded, applied for $334M loan. All electric sedan. Unclear, reportedly less than 100. Hit with layoffs, a recall. Partners with Chinese battery maker Lishen and deal with Chineses automaker Great Wall Motors Company.
Think Not awarded. The all electric Think City. Unclear, dozens. Went bankrupt for the fourth time in 2 decades. GE, A123 Systems, Ener1, Element Partners, RockPort Capital Partners, Kleiner Perkins
Carbon Motors Not awarded, applied for $310 million. Diesel car for fleets. Unclear, but company seems to be MIA.  Unclear.

Tesla and Fisker were the only startups that received funding from the ATVM program, and half of Fisker’s loan was withheld. The close to $200 million that went to Fisker represents around 2 percent of the entire ATVM loan portfolio advocated. The bulk of the loans went to the big automakers, Nissan and Ford. The DOE became much more cautious with this program in 2011 (coinciding with Solyndra’s struggles), and has since frozen the remaining $16.6 billion of the $25 billion program.

    Bright Automotive

All in all, the DOE was actually pretty cautious and conservative with the ATVM loan funding. The program definitely had problems, to be sure, including some things I outlined in this previous post: miscommunication with companies, and better early due diligence. It’s also questionable whether the government should be giving such sizable amounts to single companies, instead of putting those funds into other incentives like tax breaks.

But the ATVM program wasn’t an example of massive misspending from the DOE; it was a program that was stalled before it was really even started.

  • President Obama Nominates Anthony Foxx as Secretary of Transportation

President Barack Obama announces Mayor Anthony Foxx, of Charlotte, N.C., as his nominee for Transportation Secretary

Today, President Obama announced Anthony Foxx as his nominee for the next Secretary of Transportation.

Foxx is currently the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, which he helped turn around since taking office in 2009. Both the city and country were going through during a “bruising economic crisis,” President Obama said.

“The economy is growing. There are more jobs, more opportunity,” he said. “And if you ask Anthony how that happened, he’ll tell you that one of the reasons is that Charlotte made one of the largest investments in transportation in the city’s history.”

Since Anthony took office, they’ve broken ground on a new streetcar project that’s going to bring modern electric tram service to the downtown area. They’ve expanded the international airport. And they’re extending the city’s light rail system. All of that has not only helped create new jobs, it’s helped Charlotte become more attractive to business.

President Obama said that one of the best ways we can grow our economy and rebuild opportunity for the middle class is by putting more Americans back to work by investing in rebuilding our infrastructure.

  • Need a Chromebook Pixel case or sleeve? Try the Apple Store

One of the more common complaints I hear from Chromebook owners is that Google doesn’t offer any accessories such as cases or sleeves. Honestly, when I spent $449 last year on the Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook, which is solid but mostly plastic, I didn’t give that much thought to protecting the device. I feel a bit differently with the Chromebook Pixel with LTE, however, since it cost me $1,449. So what’s a Chromebook Pixel owner to do?

Incase sleeve with faux furTurns out that the Apple Store is a great source for cases and sleeves to fit a Pixel. That’s ironic as my purchase decision came down to a Mac Book Pro with Retina Display or a Chromebook Pixel. I bought Google’s laptop, but I shopped in Apple’s store for a sleeve. Check before you buy, but most sleeves and cases made for the 13-inch MacBook Pro should work nicely with the Pixel, even though the latter machine has a 3:2 aspect ratio screen.

This works out well because the two devices are similar enough in size. Apple’s device is 12.35 inches x 8.62 inches x 0.75 inches, for example, while Google’s Chromebook Pixel measures in at 11.72 inches x 8.84 inches x 0.64 inches. I suppose you could order a custom case for the Pixel, but that’s likely going to be costly.

Incase sleeve with Pixel charging portI ended up settling on the neoprense and faux fur Incase Sleeve for $39.99. My Chromebook Pixel fits it well and I like how the sleeve has three zippers: Two work together to close the sleeve up while a third opens up one corner of the sleeve to expose the laptop’s power port. This way, I can slip the Pixel in the case for protection and charge the device’s battery at the same time. I opted for a sleeve because I recently bought a new messenger bag that doesn’t have padding.

Got any more Chromebook case suggestions? Drop a comment, and we might just share them on our weekly GigaOM Chrome Show podcast.

  • iOS 7 again said to feature UI redesign, may be ‘unsettling’ to longtime users

    iOS 7 Redesign
After more than six years, it definitely feels like time for Apple to freshen up the look of iOS. Unfortunately, a new report suggests the revamped look iOS 7 is said to be getting may be “unsettling” to longtime iOS device users. 9to5Mac cites multiple unnamed sources in claiming that iOS 7 will indeed feature the “flat” user interface redesign that had been rumored in earlier reports. According to the site’s sources, however, the new look isn’t just flat — it’s “very, very flat” to the point that it is reminiscent of Microsoft’s Windows Phone user interface and current iOS users who enjoy the look of the software might not like it. “The interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeumorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS,” one source told the site. While the look may be surprising, 9to5Mac says the new version of iOS will be just as easy to use as earlier versions of the platform.

  • Diablo III For PS3 Goes Up For Preorder Today

At Sony’s PS4 event in February, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it was returning to console development after a long hiatus. It announced a Diablo III port for the PS3 and PS4 as its first project.

Blizzard Entertainment announced today the PS3 version of Diablo III is now available for preorder. There’s no launch date available just yet, but the developer confirmed once again that the title will be available later this year.

“We’ve poured blood, sweat, and hellfire into creating an epic Diablo III experience for PlayStation gamers,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “In addition to including all the improvements from the PC version over the past year, we’ve made several updates to Diablo III for play on the PS3. We got a ton of positive feedback from players who tried the game at PAX East, and we can’t wait to get it into everyone’s hands later this year.”

Those who preorder Diablo III will gain instant access to the Infernal Helm. It provides an experience boost to any player character who’s equipped with it.

The console version of Diablo III comes with another bonus in the form of ditching the PC version’s always online requirement. Players are free to play online, or offline, with up to four friends in online and local co-op modes.

There’s no word on whether or not the PS4 version of Diablo III will be available this year, but I would expect an announcement near the launch of the PS3 version. It would be pretty advantageous for Sony if its new machine were to launch with a game like Diablo III, especially if the PS4 version was cross-compatible with the PS3 version.

  • Samsung Won’t Let Gangnam Style Rest in Peace

Gangnam Style, as impressive as it was (in terms of sheer global reach), it pretty much over as a thing, a fad, and craze – whatever. As a culture, we’ve run it into the ground. Plus, Psy already has another song out. We’re not hating on Gangnam Style, we’re just mercifully pronouncing it dead, having lived a good life.

But Samsung has decided to kill it again. At a Galaxy S4 launch event in India, the smartphone makers tapped Bollywood star Ranveer Singh to lead a Gangnam Style reimagining that replaces most of the lyrics with Galaxy S4 spec praise. Why, oh why?

  • Microsoft wins first-time smartphone buyers

“Windows strength appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a feature phone”, Mary-Ann Parlato, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst, says about the U.S. handset market for the three months ended in February. “Of those who changed their phone over the last year to a Windows smartphone, 52 percent had previously owned a feature phone”.

End of story, or could be, if not for something else. Fifty-five percent of iOS buyers, and 51 percent for Android, are repeat smartphone purchasers. The two more popular platforms, while growing because of their larger bases, sell more to existing customers, which make up a more finite market. “With over half of the U.S. market still owning a feature phone, it’s likely that many will upgrade over the coming year, which will ultimately contribute to more growth for the Windows brand”, Parlato emphasizes.

Right now, Android and iOS own the U.S. smartphone market, with 93 percent combined share. Windows Phone: 5.6 percent. There’s small room for a third platform and potentially bigger space given the untapped feature phone segment. In a rapid-growth market, anything can happen — as repeatedly mistaken analyst forecasts prove. Consider Windows Phone maker Nokia, which share in Q1 reached 4 percent. While seemingly small, that’s up from 1 percent a year earlier. Small gains, big percentage growth.

Like Gartner, but using other metrics, Kantar Worldpanel data is for actual phone sales, which offer better view into the market than analyst firms counting shipments. The difference is handsets going to carriers and dealers that may or may not be sold versus those going to end-user buyers. The latter measure is more reliable. Kantar Worldpanel puts Android sales share ahead of iOS — 49.3 percent to 43.7 percent.

Carrier share reveals a disturbing trend: T-Mobile smartphone sales share declined 3.2 points to 9.5 percent, the only one of the big four to suffer losses. The real measure of Pink’s success will be the period ending in March, following first iPhone 5 sales and introduction of new unlimited talk, text and web plans. Additionally, T-Mobile’s MetroPCS merger is official May 1, amid major LTE network expansion.

As for the others, their respective smartphone sales share: Verizon, 37.2 percent; AT&T, 27.9 percent; Sprint, 12.3 percent. By the way, three of the four largest carriers sell Windows Phone. But AT&T has exclusive U.S. distribution for Nokia flagship Lumia 920.

  • “Jersey Shore” Actor Hospitalized For Kidney Issues

“Jersey Shore” star Ronnie Ortiz-Magro has been admitted to an Orlando hospital with a painful kidney stone, his rep says.

Ronnie was in Florida to promote his new alcoholic beverage line, Smush Cocktails, and started feeling pain during a convention. He later tweeted out that he was in the hospital and in a lot of pain, which was followed up by a statement from his reps.

“Ronnie was admitted to an Orlando area hospital late Saturday night,” the statement said. “He’s in a lot of pain and is expected to remain there for several days.”

Kidney stones are usually broken up by laser once they reach a certain size and then passed through the urine stream, but sometimes the patient just has to wait it out and let them pass on their own. No word yet on whether or not Ronnie has undergone any procedures while in the hospital.

  • Matt Cutts On The SEO Mistakes You’re Making

In the latest Webmaster Help video from Google, Matt Cutts discusses the biggest mistakes that a lot of webmasters are making when it comes to SEO.

The top mistake, he says, is not making your site crawlable, which includes not having a domain.

After that, it’s not including the right words on the page. Think about what the user is going to type, and include those words, he says. Going further, also have the things that people would be likely to look for on the page. For example, include your business hours. If you’re a restaurant, inlclude a menu in plain text – not just a PDF.

The third thing is that people are thinking too much about “link building” when they should really just be thinking about creating compelling content and maketing (including things like talking to newspaper reporters).

The fourth thing is the lack of good titles and descriptions. Make sure you include something that makes people actually want to click on the search result, and something that will be helpful, should users bookmark the site. “Something that lets them know you’re going to have the answer they’re looking for – something that makes them understand this is a good resource,” says Cutts.

Finally, the other big mistake is not taking advantage of webmaster resources, including (but not limited to) Google’s own Webmaster Tools. Cutts also suggests following Google’s blogs and webmaster videos, attending search conferences, talking to people online (including in Google’s forums), and even mentions Blekko’s link tool. Basically, just follow the SEO industry.

  • Herschel Telescope Runs Out of Coolant, Ends Mission

The European Space Agency (ESA) today announced that the Herschel space observatory has run out of liquid helium coolant. The coolant is necessary to cool the telescope’s instruments to near absolute zero.

Herschel’s ground station in Western Australia this afternoon found that the temperature in all of the telescope’s instruments is rising, confirming that the helium has run out. The depletion of the coolant was expected, as the 2300 litres of liquid helium inside the observatory had been evaporating since Herschel’s launch in 2009.

“Herschel has offered us a new view of the hitherto hidden Universe, pointing us to a previously unseen process of star birth and galaxy formation, and allowing us to trace water through the Universe from molecular clouds to newborn stars and their planet-forming discs and belts of comets,” said Göran Pilbratt, a Herschel Project Scientist at the ESA.

The telescope has been gazing into space for over three years. In just the past few months data from Herschel has been used to find starburst galaxies, examine a near-earth asteroid, discover massive comet belts, and link the 1994 Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact to water on Jupiter.

“Herschel has exceeded all expectations, providing us with an incredible treasure trove of data that that will keep astronomers busy for many years to come,” said Alvaro Giménez Cañete, Director of Science and Robotic Exploration at the ESA.

  • Preloaded apps clog up half the 16GB Galaxy S4′s internal storage

    16GB Galaxy S4 Internal Storage
Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone is now available on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, and will be coming to Verizon later next month. The Galaxy S4 comes in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB models, however users may want to splurge for the higher capacity models. Geek.com discovered that nearly half of the internal storage for the 16GB model is used even before the device is powered on for the first time. Samsung has bundled together a number of preloaded applications on the handset such as S Health, S Travel and its ChatOn messaging service, among others, that take up a total of 45% of the 16GB Galaxy S4. Despite the fact that it is advertised to include 16GB of internal storage, in reality users are left with a mere 8.82GB of available space. Luckily the Galaxy S4 supports expandable storage of up to  64GB of additional space, so it is recommended that users bypass the entry-level model or purchase a microSD card.

  • WinRAR 5.0 Beta 1 releases — get it NOW!

The first public beta of WinRAR 5.0 is now available. And it’s an interesting release with quite a few new features, although most are based around the addition of a new archiving format — RAR 5.0.

This first aims to improve compression performance by increasing the maximum and default dictionary sizes. Some older and less efficient compression algorithms have been ditched, while RAR 5.0 decompression can make use of multiple CPU cores.

A new Reed-Solomon-based recovery record improves your chances of reconstructing a corrupted archive.

Security enhancements see AES-256 encryption now used in CBC mode. A new file checksum scheme makes it harder for attackers to find file contents. And smart password verification means the program can usually detect a wrong password without first having to unpack the full archive.

RAR 5.0 also sees several smaller enhancements in various areas. File times are now always stored in UTC, for instance, simplifying archive exchange between different timezones. And NTFS symbolic and hard links can now be saved simply as links, without having to archive their contents.

More general improvements include a maximum path length of 2048 characters for regular RAR and ZIP archives, while there’s now extraction-only support for the XZ archive format.

And one or two features have been dropped, including support for file comments, although archive comments remain as before.

If you need the full details then they’re available on the WinRAR What’s new page. Otherwise, WinRAR 5.0 Beta 1 for Windows, OS X and Linux is available now.

  • Facebook Removes ‘Posts by Friends’ Option on Pages

Facebook has removed an option on pages that allowed users to filter recent posts to show only the ones made by friends. As of now, the “Posts by friends” filtering option located on the clickdown menu at the top of pages’ Timelines is gone.

Now users can only filter by “Highlights,” “Posts by Page,” or “Posts by Others.” The latter will naturally include posts by friends.

Facebook confirmed to Inside Facebook that the option was indeed removed:

We continue to improve pages to make them a place for people to learn and interact with different businesses. News Feed is where people can engage we posts and content from their friends and connections. Given that, we removed ‘posts by friends’ on pages. Those posts can still be seen in ‘posts by others.’

Of course, with their updated “new” news feed, Facebook added an option to filter by “All Friends,” removing page posts.

The “Post by Friends” filter was useful at times when filtering out page posts – oftentimes users want to see just what their friends had to say about a restaurant or other business. It’s likely that Facebook simply removed this option because it wasn’t being used or was deemed superfluous. Either way, it’s gone. That means that until Facebook adds posts to the content able to be found using Graph Search, there’s no real way to find out what a friend said about that new local brewery.

  • Missed Facebook At GDC? Watch These Videos

Do you develop games for Facebook? Were you unable to attend the Game Developers Conference in March? If you answered yes to both, Facebook has quite a treat for you today.

On its developer blog, Facebook posted a recap of all of its sessions at GDC. The social network covered everything from the basics to advanced monetization strategies. Here’s some of the more interesting talks with links to the videos in blue:

    Facebook Games Product Update

It’s been a record year for games. More than 250 million people, or one out of every 5 users, play games on Facebook.com each month. George Lee, Product Manager for Facebook Games, walks through improvements that have helped drive 75% more game installs year over year. He also discusses how games are part of the overall Facebook experience through News Feed, Timeline, and Graph Search.

Building Core and Mid-Core Games on Facebook

There are 84 million 18-35 males playing games on Facebook each month, which represents 32% of all monthly active gamers. In other words, there’s a huge opportunity for core and mid-core game developers to build on Facebook. Andy Katzman, Strategic Partner Manager, Colin Creitz, Partner Engineer, and Peter Chang, Partner Engineer, walk through the products we are building to help gamers find great games and stay connected with each other. In addition, Greg Richardson, CEO of Rumble, discusses how his team is creating a more immersive game experience, and David Helgason, CEO of Unity, talks about 3D gaming and how we’re improving the Unity experience on Facebook.

    Monetizing Your Game on Facebook

More than 100 developers generated more than $1 million on Facebook last year. Our payments team is committed to growing the games payments ecosystem and driving developer revenue. Deborah Liu, Monetization Product Manager, Daniel Schultz, Partner Engineer, and Sara Brooks, Strategic Partner Manager, discuss how developers can prepare for the updated Facebook Payments and price virtual goods for a global audience.

There are many more videos at Facebook’s blog post to keep you busy for a few hours. You might even learn something.

  • Starting today, new episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live are airing online

Soap opera fans can rejoice as new episodes of One Life to Live and All My Children start airing online Monday. Two years after ABC canceled them, the soaps are coming back to life — but only in digital format, via Hulu and iTunes.

Production company Prospect Park, which licensed the shows from ABC, will run new, 30-minute episodes of each show Monday through Thursday. (Previously, each episode was an hour long and a new one ran each weekday.) On Fridays, there will be a recap of the week. Episodes are available for free streaming on Hulu and Hulu Plus, or can be downloaded from iTunes for $0.99 apiece or $9.99 per month (20 episodes). The free version of Hulu will only make the most recent episodes available, while Hulu Plus will have all of them.

The New York Times calculated that, because production costs are lower (due in part to having shorter and fewer episodes) and because ads on Hulu can be targeted, Prospect Park needs 500,000 streaming viewers to break even on the soaps. By contrast, the shows attracted three million viewers on TV. In addition, Variety noted that Prospect Park has the rights to sell the the shows to U.S. cable and broadcast networks starting in September (where, in an interesting twist, they’d be available a week after they air online) and is also distributing them to international television networks.

Even so, some longtime fans of the shows who are not accustomed to online viewing may be confused about how to find new episodes online. (That theory is borne out by many of the user comments on this paidContent post from January.) “We would hope that all [fans of the shows] would call their friends to make sure they watch them,” Prospect Park cofounder Rich Frank told Soap Opera Digest recently. “The way to ensure that this is going to work, because we’re really totally advertiser-supported, [is] that we’ve got to get the eyeballs to be watching this. They’ve done it before; it’s just a matter of rallying the troops and getting them to watch.”

  • President Obama Celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences

President Obama Speaks at the 150th Anniversary of the National Academy of Science, April 29, 2013

President Barack Obama delivers remarks at the National Academy of Sciences on its 150th anniversary, in Washington, D.C., April 29, 2013.

In March of 1863, President Lincoln and Congress established the National Academy of Sciences as an independent and nonprofit institution charged with providing the government with the scientific advice that it needed. Today President Obama joined the current members of that body to celebrate the advances in science, engineering, infrastructure, innovation, education and environmental protection that can be attributed to the 150 years of work by the brilliant and committed scientists who have been elected and volunteered to serve their country.

While the National Academy of Sciences was created during the Civil War to help the Union understand the challenges new iron-clad battleships would create for the Navy, President Obama praised President Lincoln's wisdom in looking forward and recognizing that finding a way to harness the highest caliber scientific advice for the government would serve a whole range of long-term goals for the nation. And he highlighted the Academy's legacy of answering big questions and solving tough problems for the benefit of the nation:
