  • China claims hacker victimhood …

    not malfeasance.

    Not likely.

    From the first link:

China on Tuesday denied any role in alleged cyberattacks on Indian government offices, calling China itself the biggest victim of hackers. When asked about Google’s (GOOG) allegation that cyberattacks launched from China hit the U.S. search giant, foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said Chinese companies were also often hit by cyberattacks.

“China is the biggest victim of hacking attacks,” Ma said, citing the example of top Chinese search engine Baidu.com being hacked last week.

  • Atmos 566 Clock Won’t Stop Time, But It’s Awfully Special Looking [Clocks]

We’re fans of the crazy other-wordly clocks from Jaeager-LeCoultre, and this latest model doesn’t fail in raising beads of sweat on my forehead. Seemingly powered by magic (or any change of temperature), there’s only 76 of the Atmos 566s available.

Designed by Marc Newson, it’s made from clear or blue Baccarat crystal and as well as telling the time it also displays a current sky map. Ranging in price between $2,600 – $70,600, the closest we’ll probably get to owning one is setting it as our desktop wallpaper. But we’re not that obsessed. • Heidi Montag Album Sells 658 Copies

In what has to be an all-time record, Heidi Montag’s debut album, Superficial, has debuted to abysmal numbers.

The pop-inspired LP sold just 658 copies in its first week of release, according to Nielsen Soundscan. This certainly won’t be good news for Heidi’s accountant. The Hills star is so intent on becoming the next Britney Spears she practically bankrupted herself producing the set.

“….I put every dollar I have into this. I’ve spent over $1 million, almost $2 million, on this album. It’s cost as much or more than a Britney Spears album because I wanted it to be that quality … (But) I think within the first week we will definitely make our money back. The songs will make an impact in pop history,” she told EW last week.

  • Death knell for the dentist’s drill?

Homepage for DMG's Icon cavity infiltration system

With the possible exception of those singing, mounted fish, there is likely no piece of technology quite so universally hated as the dental drill. Well, a new invention may soon make that device obsolete – in many situations, at least. When it comes to the treatment of cavities, the current approach is to treat small ones with fluoride therapy, then wait for anything larger to reach the stage where it needs to be drilled. Now, dental technology company DMG is offering a cavity infiltration system called Icon, that allows dentists to treat no-longer-small cavities before drilling becomes necessary…

  • Genius or lunacy? BMW Oracle Racing team set to wing it for the 2010 America’s Cup

The BOR 90 under testing in San Diego

America’s team BMW Oracle Racing (BOR) has taken full advantage of a “wide open” set of design rules for this year’s America’s Cup to produce one of the most staggering and ambitious vessels ever seen on the water. Throwing out the cloth main sail, team BOR have fitted the BOR 90 with a gargantuan, motorized, solid carbon-fiber wing, nearly twice the size of a Boeing 747 wing at 190ft, or 57 metres tall. The engineering and logistics surrounding this incredible boat are mind-boggling – imagine trying to work out where to store the giant wing structure, how to transport it and how to fix it vertically onto a boat – let alone how to sail the thing – but the benefits of a non-deforming main sail include the potential for the multimillion-dollar trimaran to travel at up to 2.5 times wind speed. It’s a crazy, massively expensive and hugely risky experiment that’s never even been prototyped, and will only get a few weeks’ worth of testing before it races in February…

  • Honda’s NSX supercar replacement shows its face

    Honda's HSV-010 GT

The press release is one of the shortest ever. It reads: Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today introduced the HSV-010 GT, which will compete in the GT500 class of the 2010 Super GT Series.” Accompanied by 20 stunning images, and one set of alluring specifications, what the press release didn’t say was, “this is the NSX replacement we shelved due to the GFC and now that the economy is looking better, we’re gonna race it and see how we go at drumming up interest.” With a weight of just 1100 kg, the HSV is not a V10 as rumoured, but a short-stroke (93.0 x 62.5mm) 3.4 litre V8 producing 500 horsepower. The roadcar is not expected any time soon, but Honda should consider global interest suitably stimulated, cos it’s a little ripper…

  • A video for the Gourmet-nostalgic

    by Tom Philpott

For those nostalgic for Gourmet Magazine, a group in which I count myself, here’s a kind of cheerful wake: a video symposium (impossible to embed, damn it) on the fallen magazine featuring editor Ruth Reichl, restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, and senior editor Laurie Ochoa. Watch it and chuckle a bit at the earnestness, and weep a little about the demise of the glossy food magazine that took social and environmental issues seriously.

  • Solar Stocks Plunge After Germany Proposes To Cut Subsidies Further

    german stockbroker

Shares of solar stocks dipped Wednesday after Germany proposed a 15% cut on subsidies to solar power providers.

The proposed cut comes in addition to an annual decline in subsidies that Germany has been implementing in order to wean solar companies off of government support.

One of the biggest players in the solar market, Germany accounted for roughly 50 percent of global photovoltaic demand last year. Still, analysts predict overall growth in the solar market in 2010, due to higher solar subsidies and increased demand in other countries.

    WSJ:

In recent trading, Trina Solar Ltd. dropped 3.8% to $24.02, while Solarfun Power Holdings Co. lost 6.4% to $8.07. First Solar Inc. slid 4.1% to $118.90, and JA Solar Holdings Co. fell 4.1% to $5.21. SunPower Corp. declined 3.5% to $22.24, Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd slipped 3.8% to $14.89 and Canadian Solar Inc. fell 2.9% to $25.57.

  • Nurse donates kidney to hospital guard

Doctors diagnosed Ray Andrade with renal failure and gave him two options, a kidney transplant or remain on dialysis, an intensive, time-consuming medical procedure.

Andrade, who works as a security guard at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, began looking for a donor within the most logical pool of candidates — his family.

His sister was the only potential candidate, and she was not a match. Not long after learning this, he received a generous offer from a nurse at Delnor while they ate lunch in the hospital cafeteria.

Merri Lazenby, who works in the emergency room, told Andrade she would donate a kidney.

“She told me, ‘God gave me two kidneys. I’d be more than happy to give you one of mine,’” he said.

Lazenby made the offer, but she realized as a nurse that the likelihood she would be a close enough match to donate was low. When she learned they were a match, she was surprised. But she meant what she said. They began testing for the process in January 2009 and underwent the surgery in October.

“For her to be a match on the first crack it was incredible,” Andrade said.

Lazenby has since recovered from the surgery and returned to work. Before the surgery she ran a half-marathon. She is working out again and trying to return to her previous fitness level, she said.

The recovery process has been longer for Andrade, because his body needs to accept the transplanted kidney. His health is starting to improve to the point of contemplating a return to work, he said.

“I’m starting to feel a lot better,” he said. “I’m just starting to get my strength back.”

For Lazenby, the decision to donate was easy. The benefits are huge compared to the risk, she said.

She knows that if something happens to her down the road, she does not have a backup plan. She also knew that he did not have another living match, and that a transplant would give him the best chance at a normal quality of life.

“Andrade needs the kidney and because he is in his 60s he would have sat on a donation list for a long time and maybe never had a chance at a kidney,” Lazenby said.

Other than being co-workers, Andrade and Lazenby did not know each other well before this surgery. When Lazenby was filling out paperwork for the procedure, she realized she did not even know Andrade’s last name.

Before the surgery, they frequently worked the same shift at the hospital. It was his job to protect her as a security guard at the hospital, she said.

“I guess I’m just paying him back,” she said.

Andrade is simply appreciative of the gift.

“I’m extremely grateful to Merri and her family for stepping up like that,” he said.

  • Rolls-Royce announces Torsten Mueller as new CEO

Outgoing Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves (left) and incoming CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös (right) – Click above for high-res images

Back on July 1st of 2008, Tom Purves became Rolls-Royce‘s new CEO. At the time, we remarked that the move was interesting due to parent company BMW’s mandatory retirement age of 60, which Purves was just about to turn when he got the top spot at R-R. Not surprisingly, then, the automaker has announced a new commander-in-chief, Torsten Mueller.

Mueller is a longtime member of the BMW Group’s senior management, having worked for the German automaker for the last 20 years. Most recently, Mueller had been running BMW global product management, though his most significant contribution to the company may be his role in helping the revived Mini brand get off the ground back in 2000.

Mueller will assume the role of Rolls-Royce CEO at the end of March 2010, which is also the time when Tom Purves will retire after 25 years service with the BMW Group.

  • Hostess Cup Cakes’ iconic squiggle celebrating its 60th birthday

    Garth

Sixty years of sugary, squiggly goodness. That iconic white ribbon of icing atop Hostess Cup Cakes is celebrating a milestone, which made me contemplate the small yet significant decoration for the first time. Would the snacks taste the same without it? Probably not, but folks who ate them pre-squiggle—before 1950, that is—would have to confirm that. Is the squiggle trademarked? Definitely yes. (There’s a scrap going on right now with Little Debbie.) How many loops does it have? Seven. Always seven. Oh, the stuff I learn at a swag lounge! As part of the anniversary, Hostess made its first appearance at the Access Hollywood Stuff You Must Lounge last weekend for the Golden Globes, feeding treats to celebs and gathering their personal cupcake memories. Jennie Garth, shown here, told how she was deprived as a child and had to bum the famous desserts off her friends at school. Bad parents! To make up for lost time, she got a vintage-looking lunchbox full of Hostess. Reporters had to make due with as many samples as they could stuff in their mouths. At least there was milk. Mmmm, tasty.

  • Daley makes plea for unusual jobs bill in Washington

WASHINGTON–Mayor Richard M. Daley made a robust pitch for job creation today, proposing that businesses that create and guarantee good-paying jobs with benefits for life be exempt from paying federal taxes.

“You cannot take the old playbook and try to play the game today,” he said at the opening of the U.S. Conference of Mayors winter meetings, which run through Friday.

He spoke as the nation’s mayors released a bleak forecast for continued joblessness.

The report said the unemployment rate in 105 metro areas would exceed 10 percent at the end of 2011 and in 214 areas it would surpass 8 percent.

The report was conducted for the mayors’ group by IHS Global Insight.

Daley said job creators should be able to plow profits into areas such and marketing and technology, but not bonuses.

In his remarks, he decried the the mindset of the nation’s capital, saying “the real world does not exist in Washington” and urged mayors to educate federal officials about the fact that job creation is the No. 1 issue in cities across America.

“Job creation is the key and we heard it yesterday from Massachusetts very strongly,” Daley said, referring to Republican Scott Brown’s stunning victory in winning the U.S. Senate seat long held by the late Edward M. Kennedy.

Daley’s tax proposal came amid his description of the alarm he said people are feeling over economic growth in India and China as U.S. jobs are being eliminated and going off shore. He said there needs to be a reason for business to “in-shore” jobs to the U.S. and said a tax credit good for a year or two isn’t enough.

Daley also urged federal officials to stop bashing Wall Street. “You can rap and beat up the business community on a daily basis in Washington, but they create jobs,” he said. “Government does not create jobs.”

He spoke alongside more than 25 mayors at the opening news conference of the mayors’ meetings.
