  • T-Mobile Rumor Roundup

We’ve got a handful of Android handset rumors to pass along that come to us courtesy of a TmoNews tipster.  The carrier shows no signs of letting up in terms of Android support as the next couple of months come in to focus.

First up, the myTouch Slide seems a lock for a May 17th release.  The phone is expected to come in red, white, and black which is exactly how the first myTouch 3G was launched.  Up next, the Motorola Zeppelin.  Up until now, we were under the impression this CDMA/GSM world phone was a lock for China.  According to TmoNews, this one will be landing stateside March 10th.  The Zeppelin has a 3.7 inch touchscreen, HDMI output,  5mp camera, wifi, 3g, gps, video recording, ambient light sensor and more.

And finally, the slightly tweaked myTouch 3G v1.2 sounds as if it will be here February 10th.  The difference in the phone appears to be the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • Google Ventures’ Joe Kraus Joins OpenCandy’s Board of Directors

    OpenCandy logo
    Bruce V. Bigelow wrote:

I profiled San Diego-based OpenCandy just last week, and the Web-based distributor of open-source software already is providing an update. Excite founder Joe Kraus, who participated in OpenCandy’s Series A funding round as an angel investor, has joined the company’s board of directors. According to a statement issued by the company, Kraus will be joining directors James Cham of Bessemer Venture Partners and Darrius Thompson, OpenCandy’s founding CEO.

I noticed, though, that Kraus recently joined Google Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm founded last March with a $100 million commitment from Google, the Mountain View, CA-based search engine giant.

So does that mean that Kraus could someday oversee a Google Ventures investment in OpenCandy?

OpenCandy co-founder Chester Ng responded by e-mail: “Two of our angel investors, Joe Kraus and [LinkedIn founder] Reid Hoffman, have gone venture (Google Ventures and Greylock, respectively) since we raised our [$3.5 million] A round in late 2008. We’re excited to see this; this does not preclude their firms from leading future investments in OpenCandy. If we brought on their firms as investors, other partners would likely be involved to mitigate any conflict of interest.”

Prior to joining Google Ventures, Kraus was a director of product management at Google, where he oversaw the OpenSocial project, the company’s effort to develop API [application programming interface] standards for social networking platforms. Kraus joined Google through its 2006 acquisition of JotSpot, where he was co-founder and CEO.

  • Wii Balance Board: decent for measuring equilibrium, medical study says

This one’s pretty cute (or evidence of a completely uncreative healthcare industry). Researchers at the University of Melbourne and Singapore General Hospital’s Department of Physiotherapy have run a battery of tests on the Wii’s Balance Board, and found it to be somewhat useful in testing patient’s balance and equilibrium, medically speaking. Current medical equipment used to test these skills is very expensive, heavy, and in short supply. The Balance Board, on the other hand, runs about $99. The Wii accessory was tested on 30 patients, and found to be about as good as the expensive force platforms usually used by doctors… which is great news for Nintendo — this product has seemingly endless real-life applications — but rather embarrassing for the makers of medical equipment, no? Hit the source link for a fuller look at the story.

  • It Looks Like Loic Is Getting Ready To Launch Seesmic Look

Seesmic is going to announce a new product on Thursday. Earlier today, I received an email invitation to attend a “private event” in New York City on Thursday “at which Seesmic and several of its partners will announce a new application that has the potential change the way consumers and brand marketers experience Twitter.” What is it? The email didn’t say, but Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur left a clue on Twitter when he broadcasted that he was “taking a look at a cool new app.” The message was sent from “from Seesmic Look.” (He left a clue like this before when he bought Ping.fm).

Twitter identifies not just the person, but also the application from where a message originates. When you click on Seesmic Look it takes you to a landing page for an upcoming product launch on Thursday.

So what exactly is Seesmic Look? Well, we know that it will involve “brand marketers” and thus may be the first time Seesmic brings some form of advertising to its product, which is one of the more popular Twitter clients across the desktop, the Web, a native client for Windows7, and mobile platforms (Android and Blackberry).  But all of these clients so far are aimed at Twitter power users.  Seesmic Look sounds more like a women’s magazine.  Could this be a new, simplified product which tries to appeal to the masses? Bringing Twitter to more mainstream consumers is certainly the type of application which would appeal to brand marketers.

Now maybe I’m reading too much into things, but Loic left another clue to that effect last year when he put up a YouTube video with “30 Predictions for Twitter.”  I’ve embedded it below, but you can just jump to the 1:12 mark where he points out that mainstream users “won’t use the same tools as we do.  The current tools, including ours are really, really aiming at the power users, the very first Twitter users.”  He says that there will be a “dramatic change” in the Twitter tools and apps to make then “much easier to use” and “more accessible to the public.”  He then slips and says, “You will see, I think, at least we will make it.”

Ever since I first saw that video, I’ve been wondering when we’ll see Seesmic’s Twitter app for the masses.  Maybe we’ll finally get a look at it on Thursday.

  • Mobile Marketing Firm Velti Forecasts $106 Million in 2009 Revenues

    UK Mobile Ad Agency Velti

MocoNews Contributor Jeremy Laws runs a digital entertainment advisory and writes the industry blog Cabana Mobile.

Velti, a UK-based mobile marketing and advertising firm, which bought Ad Infuse last year, released preliminary numbers yesterday for fiscal year 2009. Velti said it now expects revenues to exceed $106 million for the year, representing 24 percent growth over 2008.

In the last year, the company claims to have run more than 2,000 campaigns for 450 brands, and indicated that demand for its products remains strong, reports StockMarketsReview.com. While the company is trying to spin the earnings as “in-line,” many analysts had them pegged in the $115 million range, so the company’s stock took a 3 percent hit in London trading yesterday.

It’ll be interesting to see the rest of the numbers when the full report is released in the next few weeks. Despite the near miss, Velti is probably the biggest player in the mobile advertising space with revenues more than double those of hyped U.S. plays like Millennial and AdMob (in the process of being acquired by Google (NSDQ: GOOG) for $750 million), and at least has five times the revenues of Quattro (which is being acquired by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) for a rumored $275 million). Oh, and by the way, these guys actually turned a (real) net profit last year. One wonders why, in light of Velti’s performance and the recent frothy valuations of other companies in the sector, is its market cap is only around $153 million?

  • Monsanto move their first biotechnology product with a direct consumer dietary benefit forward to final commercialization stage

    News Releases
Monsanto Announces Record 11 Project Advancements in Annual Research and Development Pipeline Update

    ST. LOUIS, Jan. 6, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/

    — This year’s annual research and development (R&D) pipeline update marks many firsts for Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON). Among the record 11 project advancements are the first biotechnology product with a direct consumer dietary benefit and two of the largest commercial product launches in the company’s history…

…Monsanto’s SDA omega-3 soybeans also advanced to Phase 4. SDA omega-3 soybeans offer a sustainable, land-based source of SDA that readily converts to the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil. Last year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Generally Recognized As Safe notice affirming that the SDA omega-3 soybean oil could be used in a variety of foods. Food companies can now formulate and test the oil from SDA omega-3 soybeans in food products for future launch. Clinical studies have shown that consumption of SDA omega-3 soybean oil significantly raises blood levels of the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acid EPA, also found in fish and fish oils.

  • Man pleads guilty in DUI crash that killed Elburn man

An Elburn man pleaded guilty Tuesday to being legally intoxicated when he drove his SUV through a stop sign and smashed into a pickup truck, killing its driver.

Earl G. Wilkison, 58, will be sentenced March 19 for aggravated driving under the influence in the collision that killed Ryan Campbell, 24, of Burlington.

According to authorities, Wilkison was driving east on Beith Road in Campton Township around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 11, 2008, when he failed to stop at the intersection with Illinois Highway 47. His Dodge Durango than slammed into Campbell’s northbound pickup truck.

Campbell was ejected from his truck, and he died four days later from multiple injuries. A blood test taken after the accident reportedly showed Wilkison’s blood-alcohol level above the state legal limit of .08.

Wilkison made a “cold plea,” meaning that Kane County Judge Allen Anderson, who accepted the guilty plea, will decide the sentence. Wilkison could face a three- to 14-year prison sentence, though probation is a possibility.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Katz asked Anderson to revoke Wilkison’s bond and have him taken into custody to await sentencing. But Anderson allowed Wilkison to remain free, and instead imposed stricter bond requirements.

  • Man arrested in decade-old attack on 9-year-old

A Kenosha man has been taken into custody and charged with sexually assaulting a young Aurora-area girl in 2000, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s police.

Jeroski A. Franklin, 28, was charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault. He was being held in Wisconsin, awaiting transport to Illinois.

In 2000, Franklin had allegedly assaulted a 9-year-old girl, but the incident was not reported to police until 2008. Franklin knew the girl’s family, police said.

The eight-year lag between the alleged assault and the report resulted in a lengthy investigation that culminated in a grand jury indictment on Jan. 13, Lt. Pat Gengler of the sheriff’s police said today.

The sheriff’s department alerted Kenosha police about the indictment, and they took Franklin into custody. The most serious charge could result in a 30-year prison sentence, should Franklin be found guilty.

  • Daley pushes property-tax relief legislation

The Tribune’s Clout Street blog reports: Mayor Richard Daley today renewed his push to get a property tax relief program put back in place, even as he acknowledged it will be difficult to get state lawmakers to along.

Joined by several aldermen and state legislators, Daley wants the General Assembly to bring back a property tax exemption designed to limit the annual increase in a home’s value for tax purposes at 7 percent for residences in Cook County.

The law is set to expire before tax bills hit the mail this fall.

About half of the city’s homeowners will see their bills rise hundreds of dollars on the next round of bills, Daley said, because the legislature decided in 2007 to let the tax break expire.

  • Kelly Bensimon Playboy March 2010 [Naked Pictorial]

Big Apple socialite Kelly Bensimon, star of Bravo’s top-rated docusoap The Real Housewives of New York City, will pose in nude on the pages of the March issue of Playboy Magazine. A rep for the groundbreaking men’s publication confirmed the scoop to HollywoodLife.com on Tuesday.

Kelly, 41, will be featured “on the cover and in a 6-page nude pictorial,” a publicist for the celeb said in a statement. “The pictorial was shot by Kelly’s ex-husband, famed fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon,” publicist added.

While Kelly is the first Housewives star to pose nude for Playboy, she’s not the first to strip off. Her on-screen nemesis — foodie Bethenny Frankel — got naked for a PETA billboard, which was unveiled in Times Square last month. And Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak posed topless for the NOH8 marriage equality last fall.

  • Aunts on Facebook: The New Core Users of the Social Web

Some of my favorite Facebook users are my aunts on my dad’s side. In the last two years, since they joined the site, I’ve gotten a window into their lives that I never had having grown up on the West Coast, far away from the family core. I’ve learned about what movies they’re seeing, their politics and religious celebrations, their weather, their pride in their kids (and my cousins), and the casual games they play. And without fail, they comment on each other’s posts.

While sometimes status updates and comments provide a window into the day-to-day, other times they showcase amazing communication that I might otherwise never see, such as memories of a loved relative on the anniversary of her death. I feel privileged to observe and sometimes participate in these conversations, and thankful that social web services have helped expose them to me.

On that note, Forrester Research analyst Josh Bernoff noted today that the firm had recently observed a “new behavior” in its two and a half years of tracking and classifying social technology usage, and made a new category to describe such users: “conversationalists.” Bernoff defines conversationalists as “people who update their social network status to converse” on at least a weekly basis. According to Forrester surveys, the category is 56 percent female, more so than any other group, with 70 percent aged 30 and older. All of which fits quite nicely with my anecdotal evidence.

At 33 percent of online consumers, conversationalists are a larger group than Forrester’s “creators” (now 24 percent of that population), but much smaller than “spectators” (now 70 percent). See the full chart below; it allows for people to be part of more than one category. The conversationalist kind of activity happens prototypically on Twitter, notes Bernoff, but actually more commonly on Facebook, since that site is so much larger.

Back in 2006, the VC Brad Feld and our former columnist Robert Young were part of a blogosphere discussion about the “80-19-1 Rule” and “the Fat Belly.” The idea was that between core elite contributors (thought to be a very small sliver — perhaps 1 percent — of a user-generated site like Digg’s content) and the mass of casual spectators (say, 80 percent, in line with the Pareto principle), there’s a middle ground of important engaged contributors.

It seems to me that these theories are coming to life. Social services are now figuring out how to facilitate open participation by a group that produces content for each other. These updates and conversations reach a wider group than they might have in the past, but still quite a small audience for the web. And sometimes that’s a beautiful thing.
