  • Ke$ha Doesn’t Do Real Fur

Billboard charttopper Ke$ha has taken a break from “covering the world in glitter, one country at a time” to hit back at reports that she was snapped wearing a fur coat in New York City last week.

Paparazzi snaps of the “Tik Tok” singer arriving at her Manhattan hotel on Thursday appeared to show Ke$ha decked out in animal pelts. The photos earned Ke$ha a letter from the animal-lovin’ zealots at People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals. However, the former waitress and eternal party girl insists she’s an animal lover and thus always wears faux fur.

“Its ALWAYS fake fur. I don’t do the real shiz (s**t). My rekords (sic) called ANIMAL! I dont do fur!” Ke$ha fumed in a post to her Twitter Thursday.

Ke$ha’s debut album dethroned Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream — which spent six weeks at No. 1 — from the top spot when it made its Billboard debut last week.

  • Ending Our Advertising Relationship With BigDeal

A lot of readers noticed that we’ve been running advertisements for BigDeal, a website that lets users pay to bid on low priced items. In addition to running the ads, BigDeal also created a special cobranded version of their service at techcrunch.bigdeal.com. That page used our logo (with the permission of our sales team), and we received a percentage of revenue generated from that site.

We’ve now ended that relationship and have removed all BigDeal ads from our site. And we have asked them to take down the cobranded version of the service at techcrunch.bigdeal.com.

BigDeal offers a service that is completely legal, and is backed by very well known venture capitalists. On the surface we shouldn’t have any issues with working with them.

But the service is, in my opinion, at best misleading and at worst little more than a scam. Users are encouraged to bid for items, and are told that the “winners of guaranteed auctions get a huge discount, typically 65%-90% off retail.” But the way the service works is extremely complicated. In fact a few of us here at TechCrunch debated exactly how it worked for a half hour after reading the tutorial, and never quite understood it. It took winning an auction and then actually buying the item to understand just how unattractive the whole scheme is.

If your service is so complicated that users have to be mislead to use it, it’s probably not all that great of a deal.

Users must pay $0.75 every time they bid, and to win an auction generally requires quite a few bids. In one auction I won yesterday I had to bid 12 times to win. I spent $9 for those bids. Others bidding against me also paid $0.75/bid, and there were at least 25 total bids on that item. That’s $18.75 in revenue to BigDeal, with no costs.

After the auction, all the money from the bids is gone. Vanished. Poof. That’s the confusing part of the “deal.” Even as the winner, I then had to pay the price I bid for the item, on top of all the bids. Plus shipping. The losers get the option of buying the item at normal retail plus shipping, and can use their lost bids as part of the price. But BigDeal’s retail prices range about 25% higher than the same items on Amazon, so there isn’t much of a deal there.

Confused? That’s the point. At the end of the day, as the auction winner, I paid $19.84 for an item I can get for as little as $25.70 (new) on Amazon. That’s not much of a discount. And the losers would pay $41.99 for the item if they wanted it, plus shipping. That’s 63% MORE than the Amazon price.

BigDeal makes much out of the other side of their service, which lets users get gift cards at a variety of merchants for whatever they’ve spent on bids. But those gift card sales are set up so that only 25% of the price can be paid in credit. So if I spend $100 on bids and I want to convert that to gift cards, I have to shell out another $300 for them. That’s not much of a deal, either.

BigDeal is very similar to other services like Swoopo, and there’s no reason to call them out specifically. I have no real problem with the service other than the extremely confusing tutorial which I believe misleads people into thinking that the service works differently than it actually does.

But I don’t want to send TechCrunch users to that site to potentially waste money on something they don’t understand. And I don’t want our brand associated with theirs on techcrunch.bigdeal.com. So we’re ending the relationship. And we will donate any money we’ve received from them to charity.

  • World misled over Himalayan glacier meltdown, Jonathan Leake and Chris Hastings, The Times

    Article Tags: Himalayan Glacier Data

A WARNING that climate change will melt most of the Himalayan glaciers by 2035 is likely to be retracted after a series of scientific blunders by the United Nations body that issued it.

Two years ago the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a benchmark report that was claimed to incorporate the latest and most detailed research into the impact of global warming. A central claim was the world’s glaciers were melting so fast that those in the Himalayas could vanish by 2035.

In the past few days the scientists behind the warning have admitted that it was based on a news story in the New Scientist, a popular science journal, published eight years before the IPCC’s 2007 report.

It has also emerged that the New Scientist report was itself based on a short telephone interview with Syed Hasnain, a little-known Indian scientist then based at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi.

The Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line project will connect the holy cities of Mecca, Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina.

The Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line project in Makkah (Mecca) involves the construction of a 20km-long metro line that will connect the holy cities of Mecca, Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina.

A contract worth $1.8bn for the project was awarded by the Saudi Arabian government in February 2009 to a consortium of companies led by China Railway Construction (CRCC). CRCC will carry out construction of the infrastructure and will integrate various systems of the project.

The Mecca monorail project is one of the many projects being undertaken by Saudi Arabia to expand its railway network to meet the transportation needs of its growing population of 25 million and improve an antiquated logistics infrastructure.

The project will help transport about 3.5 million people who arrive at Mecca annually to perform Hajj. The number is expected to increase to five million in future.

    The project

Construction of the monorail project will help solve the problem of heavy traffic congestion in the holy cities during the Hajj period and also help in meeting the transportation needs of the people in Saudi Arabia. Masterplans drawn up by MonoMetro show that five monorails need to be constructed to handle the flow of pilgrims to the holy cities.

The monorail project consists of five-car train sets with separate areas for men and women.

Based on the need to transport pilgrims from Mina to Arafat a four-line parallel loop network was developed. The project will help transport about 500,000 pilgrims in six to eight hours. It will also help retire about 25,000 buses from about 70,000 fleet used to transport pilgrims.

The first phase of the project includes the four-line loop with a network of pick-up and drop-off stations between Mina and Arafat. The first of the five new metro lines is expected to start operating with Automatic Train Protection at 35% capacity by November 2010.

By mid-2011, the line will run without a driver but with an attendant on board. The metro will reach full capacity to carry 72,000 passengers/direction/hour by 2011’s Hajj. About 8,000 skilled and unskilled workers, along with 5,000 engineers, are engaged in the project.

The Mecca metro project is under construction in several phases, and should be complete by 2011’s Hajj pilgrimage.

The project will service each of the three main cities of Mina, Arafat and Muzdafila with three substations each. The four-line parallel loop network splits into single tracks covering all the encampment zones in Mina. Mina will be the last station for the metro line and will be located towards the west of the Jamarat Bridge. The metro line will be linked to all the four floors of the bridge with elevators.

The four-line parallel route moves south towards Arafat before reaching a main station next to the Arafat Mosque and splitting again into a single-line network to carry pilgrims into Arafat. The lines come together again and move towards Muzdelefa where pilgrims will spend ceremonial time before returning to Mina.

The line will run on a viaduct with the depot located at the end of the trail that is behind the first station in Arafat. A turnaround loop is planned between the last station and the depot.

    Infrastructure

The trains of the monorail will operate at an elevation ranging from 8m to 10m so that they do not obstruct the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on the ground.

The first phase of the project includes the four-line loop with a network of pick-up and drop-off stations between Mina and Arafat.

The trains will comprise 12 carriages, each 20m long and 3m wide. The monorail will run on a powerful superstructure made of steel railroads supported by solid concrete pillars made of prefabricated steel masts and beams.

The design of the superstructure is auto-responsive to the forces of acceleration and emergency braking, with columns and specialised beamways that act as a kinetic energy absorbing/redistribution network, as well as the modular elevated station kit.

Controlled access to the monorail is planned to prevent accidents such as the tragedy at Mina in 2006, when more than 350 people died in a stampede. Trains on four elevated tracks will transport 20,000 pilgrims per hour in an orderly manner. The project will also include the construction of multi-storey parking facilities at the entrance of Mecca to help pilgrims park their cars before boarding the trains.

    Rolling stock

The rolling stock for the monorail will include five-car sets running together as ten-car sets supplied by MonoMetro, UK. Each five-car set is entirely interconnected and air-conditioned with separate areas for men and women.

The five-car sets for the monorail are being supplied by UK firm MonoMetro.

Each five-car set has a central emergency escape car with inflatable chutes to enable pilgrims to escape in case of an emergency. As the tracks form a closed loop each train set will circulate several times between Mina and Arafat. The rolling stock will be stabled throughout the year for cleaning and maintenance at the depot in Arafat

The technology on which the monorail is based is steel wheels running on steel rails in a vector bifurcation bogie capture configuration. The wheel-rail interface geometry for the monorail was developed by MonoMetro with SKF, the Swedish bearings manufacturer. ESG, the mechanical engineering arm of English Welsh and Scottish Railways, will develop the vector bifurcation bogie sets.

The Mecca project is aimed at easing congestion in times of pilgrimage as well as providing extra transport for Saudi residents.

Knorr-Bremse was awarded a $55m contract to provide braking systems for trains and station platform screen doors for nine stations of the metro line.

    Signalling and communications

CRCC awarded a $144m contract to Thales in June 2009 to supply, integrate and deploy its driverless train control and telecommunication systems for the project. Thales will design, integrate, install, test and commission the systems. It will install the SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system in the metro project.

Thales will also supply its fully integrated communications solution including an operation control centre, CCTV, SCADA and an automatic address and information system.

    Contracts

Westinghouse Platform Screen Doors will provide the PSDs for the project, Siemens will supply power and Lloyds Register will act as the safety assessor. Systra will carry out the civil work and WS Atkins will be in-charge of electrical and mechanical systems and project management.

Brecknell Willis, a UK supplier of power rails and current collection shoes for railways, will provide a lightweight aluminium power rail with stainless steel contact surface. It will supply 1500v DC and a current draw of 3,000A.

TPI Composites, a US manufacturer of high-strength low-weight composite lightweight vehicles, will manufacture the cars.

UK firm Intelligent Engineering will provide patented elastomeric bonding technology for the butterfly masts, side arms and the consecutive beam junction assembly with viscous damping. The technology will enable cyclical expansion and contraction to sustain heat in the region. It will also provide high resistance to emergency braking force. Buro Happold will be responsible for developing the structural engineering of the MonoMetro superstructure.

    The future

Studies are being carried out to ascertain the extension of the monorail to a station close to the Grand Mosque in Mecca and linking it with Jeddah airport and the Haramain Railway that connects the two holy cities of Mecca and Madinah. Similar projects are planned for the city of Madinah in the future.

The vector bifurcation bogie is articulated at the vertex between either side with steel wheels running on steel rails.

  • EVs mass market: BYD Auto Gets Ready to Deliver e6 Electric Car to U.S. in 2010 – COMPLETE VIDEO TNR.v, CZX.v, BYDDY, WLC.v, LI.v, RM.v, LMR.v, SQM, F

BYD claims the longest range available on the market for the road ready EV with 205 miles. Time will tell very soon whether we can trust this spec. There will be issues with safety testing in US and auto brand recognition, but we think the price will cure a lot of initial market problems and this car will take market by the storm. Whether BYD will be able to make money out of electric cars we are not sure and think that margins will be sacrificed for market penetration in the West and the real driving force will be a conventional vehicles booming sales in China. This scenario will be very positive for our Next Big Thing – price competition in EV space will make electric cars affordable and bring our mass market sooner rather than later with an explosive growth in Lithium and REE Demand. Also of note is the development by BYD Energy utility storage systems for alternative energy, based on Lithium Fe battery technology they will be an integral part of electric future according to the company.
Now throw a dash of China, words like Lithium, REE and Energy Security – you can be sure this will lead to excitement and “pockets of explosive growth” even in the very slow economy in general.”

BYD Auto Gets Ready to Deliver e6 Electric Car
    to U.S. in 2010 – COMPLETE VIDEO

DETROIT – January 12, 2010: Chinese automaker BYD showcased their green vehicles today during its press conference at the 2010 North America International Auto Show. With a 5000-square-foot display space, BYD Auto returned to the Cobo Center for the third consecutive year.
On display is BYD’s full-electric vehicle e6 and the new version F3DM electric model.
The e6, with five-passenger will be marketed as a family oriented crossover. Features BYD ferrous battery, the e6 with an expected range per charge cycle of 330 km (205 miles ) in cruising mode, an estimated acceleration time from 0-100km/h (0-60mph ) in less than 14 seconds and with a projected top speed of 140km/h(87mph). These characteristics make the e6 ideal for daily commutes, in-town driving and even long distance travel.
    BYD F3DM
The new version F3DM electric vehicle also features BYD Fe (Lithium Fe – S.) battery together with a BYD 371QA 1.0-liter gasoline engine; it will be equipped with the solar panel sunroof, which can be used to channel power to the Fe battery. The F3DM has a range of about 400km (267 miles) on one tank of fuel, with a maximum speed of 160kph (about 100 mph). It can also run for 100km (about 60 miles) powered by Fe battery pack alone.

    e6 Design

What sets the e6 apart from other electric vehicles is its size and performance. With current battery capacity limitations, most manufacturers have selected to focus on small, lightweight EVs that stress efficiency over performance and range. Instead, BYD has used its rich history in IT development and cutting edge battery technology and taken an unconventional approach in order to manufacture cars that represent the company’s slogan of Build Your Dreams. These ideas are the underlying philosophy and ideology behind the e6.
The high-tech e6 will be marketed as a family-oriented crossover vehicle boasting the same exterior dimensions of the average family car. The e6 features a spacious interior cabin which will seat 5 comfortably, with substantial legroom and headroom for passengers as well as ample luggage space in the rear of the vehicle. The e6 measures 4554mm (179.3 inches ) long, 1882mm (71.7 inches) wide and1630mm (64.2 inches) tall.
    Convenient and Eco-Friendly
The environmentally friendly e6 is a zero-emissions electric vehicle which means it emits no harmful toxic emissions or greenhouse gases. BYD’s new Fe battery takes the green philosophy a step further by only using chemical substances within the battery that are completely recyclable.

  • Which family is greener? Solar-powered eco-house in Somerset versus classic Victorian terrace in London, by Duncan Farmer, Daily Mail

    Article Tags: CO2 Level

    article image

When it comes to sustainable living, the city beats the country hands down: a family in a house in a new eco-village in Street, Somerset, which has solar power, rainwater collection and a sophisticated warm-air recycling system, has a bigger carbon footprint than a similar family living in a Victorian terrace house in Battersea.

In fact, the London household produces almost a ton less carbon dioxide than its Somerset counterpart.

While London’s housing stock may be old and draughty, it is so densely built that neighbours share walls and ceilings, and therefore heat; and the city is so compact that most residents walk or take public transport to work, the shops or on a night out.

Tonight Show staffers are furious that they’re facing unemployment in a wrecked economy while boss Conan O’Brien walks away from the fiasco with $30 million, insiders close to NBC tell The New York Post’s Page Six Column.

“The production team feels betrayed,” a source said. “They don’t understand why Conan couldn’t have just agreed to move the show to 12:05 a.m. and see how things turn out, which would have allowed them all to keep their jobs. But his ego got in the way.”

Nearly 200 members of O’Brien’s production team, who uprooted their lives to move from New York to Los Angeles for the show last year, are losing their jobs and livid that they’re been overlooked as Conan negotiates his way out of the network he’s called home for 16 years.

“They all uprooted their lives and their families’ lives to move to LA for him, and now they feel like they have simply been forgotten,” the insider said. “There are 200 people losing their jobs while he walks off with a payoff worth $30 million. The mood on set and backstage is dismal.”

    article image

A BBC weather forecaster has suggested that the Met Office’s super-computer has a ‘warm bias’ which has stopped it predicting bitterly cold spells like the one we have just endured.

Paul Hudson said the error may have crept into the computer’s climate model as a result of successive years of milder weather.

His claim was rejected by the Met Office but other experts said there could be flaws in the system, which was first developed 50 years ago.

In a blog, the BBC Look North presenter writes: ‘Clearly there is the rest of January and February to go, but such has been the intensity of the cold spell…it would take something remarkable for the Met Office’s forecast (of a mild winter) to be right.

In case you weren’t aware, Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin is somewhat of a living legend around these parts. The Russian-borne phone guru manages to get his hands on an ample number of then-unreleased devices and juicy scoops — but this time he might’ve just outdone himself with some apparent hands-on time with Windows Mobile 7. Here’s what he’s saying: the OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There’s “a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks… for WM users it will be a great step ahead. For market it’s a copycat of Android 3.1/3.2 [sic] or iPhone.” No direct comparison to Zune HD, except to say that it’s a simpler UI than what he was seeing here, and also no clue on the kernel underneath. Still, the lack of legacy compatibility is either a huge bummer to the fan base, or if not that then Microsoft is preparing for a two-platform WinMo world. Then again, this is a purported early build, so who knows what’s bound to change before the final release. There’s a lot of other details if you’re willing to check his feed, or just head over to WMPoweruser for the abridged / “good parts” version. Boy, February just can’t come soon enough.

Early Windows Mobile 7 build given some hands-on time, incompatible with previous WinMo apps? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 17 Jan 2010 03:18:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • Zac Efron, Jake Gyllenhaal Join Robert Pattinson In Quest To Become The Next “Spider-Man”

Robert Pattinson is set to swing into action to replace Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4, according to a report out of the UK. But the Twilight hunk will have some stiff competition from fellow young stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Zac Efron.

Moviegoers were devastated when it was announced that former Spidey star Tobey Maguire, 34, would be hanging up his cape. Last week, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios said they will delay the fourth film in the hit superhero franchise by one year and return in 2012 with a new story, new director, and cast. A new prequel will see Peter Parker back in high school.

The Twilight hunk is reportedly the top choice of Columbia executives to star in the film, Britain’s The Mirror said Sunday.

A source tells the tab: “The buzz in Hollywood is all about R-Patz as the hot, young thing being lined up to fill Tobey Maguire’s shoes. It would be a hard act to follow as fans were traumatised at the news Tobey was going. His mild-mannered portrayal as Peter Parker and the transformation to Spider-Man kept millions of fans in the cinemas for the box-office smash. He also had great chemistry with Kirsten Dunst, who plays love interest Mary Jane.”

Does Pattz really stand a chance with Efron and Gyllenhaal also in the running? “I don’t know what the chances are to be honest. I assume they’re pretty slim. It’s a long-shot but if it came down to it, it’d be a dream come true. What young actor wouldn’t?”
