  • Lots of Countries Are Getting Faster Internet But We’re Not One of ‘Em [Bandwidth]

Akamai released their quarterly State of the Internet report this week, along with this chart showing the fastest national networks in the world. From 2008 to 2009, on average, the world’s internet got 13% faster. America’s got 2.4% slower.

There are tons of interesting tidbits to be found in Akamai’s State of the Internet report for Q3 2009. This particular chart shows the 10 countries with the fastest internet in the world. It also shows that they’re not slowing down.

South Korea, already pumping at 14.6 Mbps, managed to improve 16% over last year. Ireland improved most dramatically of the top ten, improving their infrastructure to increase year over year speeds 73%.

But America, who has the 18th fastest internet in the world, slowed down ever so slightly to 3.9 Mbps in 2009. Though our nation as a whole didn’t get any faster, some individual areas showed significant improvement, including a 20% bump in Massachusettes and a 17% jump in D.C. and Utah.

If America’s megabit mediocrity depresses you, just be thankful you don’t live on the Island of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean: it was the slowest of the 203 nations tested. [cnet]

  • Proven Hair Loss Treatment For Women

There’s hardly anything worse than losing your hair! You stare at your comb in horror as handfuls of hair come out. You’ve been changing your hairstyle to cover up the thin spots. You feel naked and old!

You dread looking like your Grandmother, no matter how sweet she is. Your self-image as a young, attractive woman is going right down the drain along with your hair. The majority of females feel upset and distressed when watching the hair loss, which is not unusual. You’re not alone in this dilemma. Statistics show that one in four women face female pattern baldness.

Lots of reasons can cause women’s hair loss. It’s not your fault. The perms don’t cause it, hairdryers don’t cause it.  Brushing, teasing, and curling don’t cause your hair to fall out. Not even coloring, days in the sun, or any of the other things you do to enhance the beauty of your hair.

The true causes of hair loss fall into three categories: Hormone changes or imbalances, serious health issues, Genetic influences. Firstly, Hormones can be a reason of hair loss if women hormones are misbalanced and result in female hair loss. Although, in case the hormonal disorder is cured, the hair loss is commonly ended. Besides, child delivery can be also a reason of unexpected female hair loss. It’s usual for lots of females to experience hair loss after delivering a child – commonly in three months they’ve delivered a child. This has its root in hormones, as well. But in this case there is no ground for worrying.

Secondly, serious health issues, including certain medical conditions, some prescription drugs, or severe illness (such as cancer) may contribute to hair loss. Again, this is usually temporary, but your health care provider will be able to advise you.

There are lots of causes for females to have hair loss but which is the most frequently met is the genetic hair loss (alopecia) that is responsible for 95 percent of women hair loss. Look at your mother and grandmother. If their hair is thinning, yours probably will, too.

This situation is worrying many women. Fight back! Women do whatever they need to look more beautiful. Are you? Women are always in search of some hair loss treatment for women when they are affected by hair loss as they will do whatever it takes to keep their attractiveness intact. There are number of hair loss treatments for women available in the market. However, they don’t know what the best and safest treatment for them is.

  • CALAIS – 100 M€ PROJET ECO-URBANISME

  • G-Fi puts GPS on your first gen iPhone or iPod touch, at quite a cost

I love my iPhone, but I have to say that there is one little thing wrong with it: it’s a first generation. That means that I can’t quite play all of the games, or record video, or do all of the cool GPS things you kids can do nowadays. It’s not a really bad thing — I can still do a good 99% of the things that a 3GS can do, and I get plenty of usage out of mine anyway — but it is kind of a pain waiting for my Google maps to update over Edge, or not having turn-by-turn directions when I want them.

Fortunately, there are already ways to get GPS going on my 1st gen, and here’s another one. The G-Fi is a little box that will add GPS to your first generation iPhone or iPod touch. Unfortunately, this one is probably a little too hardcore for me — it creates a mobile wireless point that will spin out GPS locations to any number of devices in the area, up to 200 total. The catch: it requires a specific app called Navmii, selling in the App Store now for $33. That’s in addition to the little box itself, which is $100.

Unfortunately, while this might work for a large number of roaming devices, it’s way more than I need. A single unit add-on like the Magellan kit works with any app that uses GPS and will probably cost less, too. But if this one floats your boat (maybe you have a fleet of bounty hunters rocking 1st gen iPhones who need GPS to track down crooks together?), you can pick it up right now.

TUAWG-Fi puts GPS on your first gen iPhone or iPod touch, at quite a cost originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 16 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • Calacanis Announces 2nd Open Angel Forum Event In Boulder

Hot on the heels of the inaugural Open Angel Forum in Los Angeles this Thursday, event organizer and notable investor Jason Calacanis has announced a second event will be held in Boulder next month. Announcing the event on his weekly live video podcast This Week in Startups, Calacanis says he has booked Foundry Group’s Brad Feld, and TechStars founder David Cohen, though he plans to have at least a dozen more angels attend.

The Open Angel Forum – which Calacanis considers a “jihad” rebuking VC firms with “pay-to-pitch” practices – provides entrepreneurs with the opportunity for free and open access to angel investors.

    Sponsor

“It’s low-class, inappropriate and predatory for a rich person to ask an entrepreneur to PAY THEM for 15 minutes of their time,” Calacanis wrote on his blog last fall.

But for Calacanis, his blogs, Tweets and overall outrage over the subject was not enough – so he created Open Angel Forum. Announced in December, the forum held its inaugural event this past Thursday in Los Angeles, placing 5 lucky companies in front of 18 investors – all at no cost to the entrepreneurs.

Among the investors was Matt Coffin, Ron Conway and entrepreneur turned venture capitalist Mark Suster who finds the “pay-to-pitch” practice “insane”.

“Many would-be entrepreneurs feel that they don’t have enough access to investors and that the opportunity to present to a group will help them short circuit the fund raising process,” Suster wrote yesterday on his blog Both Sides of the Table.

In a time where “lean startups” are a growing trend, free and open events like Calacanis’ are exactly what the venture capital industry needs to find the truly innovative entrepreneurs and get the right money in the right hands.

“We don’t need competition,” writes Suster. “We need more overall organizations like Jason’s to helping young entrepreneurs more easily reach angel investors with no payola.”

  • What do you think a 7.0 earthquake would do to your city?

Suppose a 7.0 earthquake happened in your city? How extensive would the damage be? Would it knock down a lot of the taller buildings? Just the old ones?

  • San Pedro de Macorìs sigue su crecimiento, ahora de forma vertical.

San Pedro de Macorìs sigue su crecimiento, ahora de forma vertical y en manos del sector privado.

    Por Francis Anìbal.

    Edificio Luchy I

    Edificio Sergio A Beras

Ese desarrollo vertical se desarrolla en manos del sector privado y no asì en el sector pùblico, en donde la polìtica de construcciòn ha sido bastante lenta en esta ciudad.

  • Hilarious and Sick Facebook Groups

I have started this thread to discuss the diffrent groups on facebook, in the past month I would say the amount of groups on facebook has risen dramaticaly. And I have seen a fair few that have really really made me laugh even though there a little bit sick. The two are ‘I am not madeleine mccann’ which I think got removed a bit obvious why. But the funniest was ‘When I was your age we didnt have Paedophiles, we had to buy our own sweets’. Whats the funniest other people have seen?

We the Bosnian and Herzegovian members of skyscrapercity.com would like to have our own moderator who could act quicker and who could rearrange our subforum. The needs for a moderator are huge, because our subforum is becoming larger and large every single day with new members daily, almost every other country on Euroscapers have their moderator and we feel a bit segregated because of the lack of our own moderator.

  • Today is the first day of the rest of my life !

I am 60 years old and disabled. I was diagnosed 4 years ago. My doc put me on Lantus with a Humulin kicker. All was going well. Last year he said I was doing so well he took me off Lantus and put me on Metformin. My BG has been so wacky since its unreal. To make matters worse…I have liver problems. I went to an oncologist and he says I have cirrhosis of the liver. I dont drink alcohol at all…ever. My BG stays in the 400-500 range during the day. Doc has me on metformin 4 times a day now. Unfortunately…medicare wont let me on Part B without a monthly 150.00 ‘penalty’ for not going on Part B 4 years ago ! ( I had decent insurance back then). NOW the insurance company has basicallty kicked me off and I cant afford the 200.00 office visit to my doctor ! I want to go back on Lantus…but cant without at least one visit to my doctor … grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I have been reading this forum for about 2 weeks now. I am learning a lot about diet, metformin, and everything else about diabetes. I have gotten on a ‘no white stuff" diet. I am watching my carbs. My wife is helping me with all this…bless her heart. As far as Lantus and needles…I hate needles! BUT with the super fine syringes and my wife volunteering to inject me…it was a breeze! I used to ‘pinch an inch’ on my stomach and she would ‘just do it". It was really painless. The Lantus worked well. The metformin doesnt. I will continue to read all I can…watch my diet…take my pills…and hope I can get back to my doctor very soon and get back on THE GOOD STUFF…thnxs

  • Will a Chinese or Indian automaker scrap the traditional dealer model?

With the possible exception of a trip to the dentist, visiting a car dealership is the least pleasant activity in which we participate. Unless you walk in with mound of cash, you can be sure that using their cruel four square method, U.S. dealers have a quadrangled plan of attack to bend you over. But what if it wasn’t like that?

China’s BYD (known colloquially as Build Your Dreams) will begin selling cars in the U.S. within the year. That much we know. But where are they going to sell them? Put a better way, how are they going to sell them? According to USA Today, the big fear among other automakers and U.S. dealers is the latter question.

The possibility exists that incoming players like BYD or India’s Tata or Mahindra could sidestep the middle man and sell vehicles directly to customers. Obviously, this would be a rather large selling point to those of us who don’t enjoy the feeling of being cheated and fleeced during a round of three-card monte (i.e. the typical dealer experience). Another option might be selling the cars through big-box stores like Walmart or Costco. The shape of things to come is getting interesting, if nothing else.
