  • Airstash: A Teeny-Tiny Wi-Fi Router and Card Reader | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

The design is simple, but the uses are manifold. You could use this to wirelessly copy photos from card to computer, but that, apart from saving you a USB port, is a little boring. What about carrying an extra 32GB of movies and music that can be streamed from the built-in server direct to your iPhone? Or creating a fully functional wireless network for sharing, well, anything? Because it uses vanilla Wi-Fi, it works with anything. And because it uses USB, it charges when you plug it into a spare port.

  • Plug-Watch: Cute Power Cube, The Best Adapter Yet? | Gadget Lab

Power plugs. You hate them, I’m obsessed with and fascinated by them, so here’s something for both of us. The Cute Cube not only looks great, it solves pretty much all the annoyances of a multi-socket adapter.

Cute indeed. The problem is that this doesn’t have a manufacturer yet. Somebody get on that, stat! Hope to see this in stores soon.

  • The One-Year Report Card of Yahoo’s Carol Bartz–Financials: C+ [BoomTown]

    547702043_HQzHZ-L-1

Yesterday, BoomTown began grading the performance of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, after she gave herself an overall B- for performance for the one year since she took over the troubled Internet giant.

But I decided to be more specific, splitting the grades into five categories: Management, financials, product innovation, deal-making and moxie.

For management, I gave Bartz an A-, because she has been a definite improvement on previous leadership, in terms of decision-making, speed and essentially grabbing the mantle of control firmly from the start.

Some thought I was too generous and others thought it should have been an A+. Which means, it was just about right!

    logo

Today, let’s look at financials–by which I mean Yahoo’s fiscal performance and its stock price.

In this regard, Bartz only gets a C++ (it’s a techie joke, get it?).

I could have also given her a B- here, I guess, but–to me–C+ simply means financials have remained in a holding zone under Bartz, so she does not deserve to be completely decried or applauded either.

Why? Well, let’s start with the stock.

While Yahoo (YHOO) stock is up about 38 percent for the year, which is a good thing, it still lags those of other Internet companies and also the market.

In the same time period, the Nasdaq was up about 44 percent, Google’s stock has doubled in that time and Microsoft (MSFT) shares are also up a lot more too.

In an interview with Bloomberg recently, Bartz claimed that Yahoo was in the “penalty box” with investors–a hangover from former management, presumably–and that was the reason for its weaker stock gain than others.

Well, whatever, but she has been the CEO for a year and Wall Street is still holding out. Thus, she has to fully take the blame, instead of pointing the previous administration.

    Yang_fallen_cant_get-up

In other words, former CEO and Co-founder Jerry Yang and the Yangtanic are ancient history. So, all is forgiven, Jerry (call me!).

Bartz also blamed the recession for Yahoo’s continued revenue declines in 2009, which were down by 12 percent overall in the most recent quarter.

She told Bloomberg: “We came out of one of the worst climates ever. And if you look at growth of Fortune 500 companies, only being down 12 or 15 percent is damn good. I’m not going to apologize for our growth.”

Again, whatever. But she runs a company in a high-growth industry and is not selling hams or socks, so perhaps bragging that being down 12 to 15 percent was “damn good” is a bit of a stretch.

(Microsoft certainly did not crow over its 14 percent decline in revenue in the most recent quarter, even though it beat Wall Street expectations, and its fiscal results rely a lot on something that does get profoundly impacted–namely, sales of PCs–in a recession.)

Specifically, in the third quarter, Yahoo’s search advertising revenue was off 19 percent and display was off eight percent at “Owned and Operated” sites on Yahoo.

Google, in contrast, reported a seven percent rise in its third-quarter results, and its execs projected a mood of smooth sailing ahead and no more econalypse.

Still, Yahoo’s fiscal performance relies a lot on graphical and premium branded advertising, so it has remained weaker and will do so until the economy really comes back.

Many analysts are predicting exactly this, with double-digit sales growth in this area ahead.

And Yahoo’s bottom line is likely to get a boost when its costs are off-loaded to Microsoft, as part of the search and advertising deal Bartz struck with the software giant earlier this year. It awaits regulatory approval, which is likely, and will then start to kick in later in the year.

Still, a dark cloud hangs ominously over the persistent search share declines Yahoo has suffered, which Bartz and others attribute to loss of toolbar and other distribution deals that Google and Microsoft picked up.

    2008_01_17_pb kids growth

But query growth rates are also down and that’s a red flag to watch for, especially since Microsoft and Google are up a lot.

Nonetheless, depending how these various parts of Yahoo revenue sort themselves out, along with Bartz’s cost-cutting, Yahoo’s bottom line is most likely to look better in the quarters ahead, so the stock could certainly go up quickly.

And so could her financial grade. Bartz is well known for being great at managing the bottom line and Wall Street expectations, so I suspect it is top of mind for her.

That said, once that registers, everyone will then be looking for not just a return to normal, but actual growth.

And that can only come from product innovation, which is what will be on the grading block for Monday.

  • Examenul si raceala

    Locatia :unul din laboratoarele facultatii
    Scopul : terminarea unui proiect

Printre numeroasele intamplari despre care am vorbit, una mi-a ramas in minte.

A strins “mucusul” in mana, si a reinceput sa scrie.

Si cand sa termine de scris,il vede o profesoara.I se parea dubios felul in care tine mana stinga, asa ca s-a dus sa vada daca ascunde ceva in ea.
Va redau o parte din conversatia lor:

    Profesoara: Ce-ai in mana?
    El : Nimic,doamna profesoara !
Profesoara: Si chiar vrei sa te cred ? Deschide pumnul !
Deschide pumnul! (ea inca credea ca are o fituica in mana)

Pur si simplu, s-a intors repede si a plecat.

    S. Now throw a dash of China, words like Lithium, REE and Energy Security – you can be sure this will lead to excitement and “pockets of explosive growth” even in the very slow economy in general.”
It is a very good sign: increase of 20% for this very expensive compare to its utility EV. It is our “Low Base Growth” in action. MiEv are available now and it makes them so different from all other just coming into the market. First trial reports from UK are very encouraging, taking into account recent hard weather conditions there. Please, pay attention to industrial partnerships for MiEv already in place – this increase in production reflects industrial interest in this trial EVs to test mass market ambitions for EVs in general.
“For the diffusion of EVs, infrastructure development is as important as developing the car itself. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has been conducting joint research with power companies using the “i MiEV” . The power companies will evaluate and analyze EVs’ practical applicability and quick-charge compatibility, which will help to develop vehicles and infrastructure for safe and convenient EV use.

Based on the “i” minicar’s rear-midship layout platform, “i MiEV” replaces the conventional engine, transmission and fuel tank with a lithium-ion battery system, motor, inverter and other EV components.

The long wheelbase, a feature of rear-midship layout, provides space for high capacity lithium-ion batteries under the floor. It also enables the motor and inverter to be installed in the space that used to house the conventional engine and transmission. “i MiEV” ensures ample cabin space for passengers(4-occupant capacity) and reasonable luggage compartment space in the rear.

The installation of batteries under the floor makes the “i MiEV” ’s center of gravity low, which provides a more stable driving dynamic.

EV batteries must have high energy density, and the “i MiEV” utilizes high energy density lithium-ion batteries. A module consists of 4 cells, and 22 modules make one battery pack. Thanks to the structure of the modules, which allows them to be installed in either a vertical or transverse position, each high-capacity battery pack can fit under the floor. With these batteries installed, the target range is 160km (driving pattern: Japan 10-15 mode) for fleet monitoring test vehicles in 2008.

Highly efficient motor can be built smaller than gasoline engine, while still producing high torque at low revolutions.

If in Lithium space resources are presented in more or less available form even in a tightly controlled market, REE market is controlled by China with over 95% of the market under its influence.
If we decided to drive electric cars and charge their Lithium battery with wind, solar and other green power generated energy – time is study Rare Earth Elements. Every time you click on your Blackberry, iPhone or use your PowerBook you are at the mercy of all these elements.”

“i MiEV” accepts three types of battery charging systems: The household charger system (100V,200V) for charging at home or a parking lot, and the quick-charger system for speedy charging. With the household charger system, “i MiEV” could be charged from either a 100V or 200V ordinary electric outlet via the household charger plug located on the right side of the vehicle. With the quick-charger system, “i MiEV” could be charged in short time via the quick-charger plug located on the left side of the vehicle.”

    Bloomberg:

By Kiyori Ueno and Tetsuya Komatsu
Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) — Mitsubishi Motors Corp., the maker of the i-MiEV electric car, rose the most in more than a month in Tokyo after a report it will raise production of the battery- powered vehicle.
The automaker advanced 7.5 percent to close at 144 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It was the biggest gain since Dec. 3.
Mitsubishi Motors, which began selling the i-MiEV to corporate and government customers in July, will increase production by 20 percent from an original plan for fiscal 2010 to 8,500 vehicles, company spokesman Kunihiro Nakamura said by phone today.
“Investors are reacting to the news report of increasing electric-vehicle production,” said Hiroichi Nishi, an equities manager at Nikko Cordial Securities Inc. in Tokyo. “Environmental issues are a long-term priority, and people jump on it.”
Mitsubishi Motors will also start mass production of the car from fiscal 2012, one year ahead of its initial plan, Nakamura said.
The Mainichi newspaper reported the news earlier.”

  • Court Report: Getting to know you

Kevin Martin(notes) is back, meaning the feeling out process between K-Mart and Tyreke Evans(notes) can begin (again).

    • Kevin Martin returned to the court Friday, after missing 32 games since fracturing his wrist in early November. The Kings
were 1-4 at the time of the injury, with Martin having averaged 30.6
points and 3.4 threes in 42 minutes per game. Tyreke Evans has emerged
as a two-way game changer in the months since, averaging 22.3 points,
    81-percent foul shooting, 5.5 boards, 5.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.6
blocks in 28 games over that stretch. The Kings also enjoyed some team
success despite K-Mart’s absence, winning 12 of 22 games before a
recent swoon (2-8). There is significant interest in whether Martin and
Evans can form a mutually beneficial pairing, as it will help determine
    the future of the franchise.

The lines weren’t stellar in their
first attempt to re-connect, a 98-86 loss to the 76ers. Evans scored 14 points on
3-of-13 shooting in 36 minutes, adding four assists, three turnovers,
and three steals. Martin jumped right back into the starting five and
played 34 minutes, scoring 19 points on 4-of-10 shooting, with two
threes, two assists, three turnovers, one steal, and one block. One
very good sign was that the two combined to make 17 of 17 foul shots.
Omri Casspi(notes) was something of a non-factor for the Kings (6 points,
2-of-6 FG), while Jason Thompson(notes) had a very good game (19 points, 16
boards, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 3 blocks). The Kings are right back at
it on Saturday, taking on the Wizards in Washington, and then play once
in the span of five days.

    • The 76ers got yet another
    double-double from Samuel Dalembert(notes) (28 minutes, 17 points, 12 boards,
3 blocks) and a rare showing of efficient offense from Thaddeus Young(notes)
(20 points, 9-of-14 FG, 2-of-2 FT) in the win over the Kings. Young has a ways to go
to make up for his horrific production over the past month (12 points,
0.1 threes, 40% FG, 70% FT over his past 15 games).

    • You want to talk about defense? The
Bobcats limited the Spurs to 76 points on 39-percent shooting, with no
player scoring more than 11 points. All was not completely lost for the
Spurs from a fantasy perspective, however. DeJuan Blair(notes) followed up
    Wednesday’s 28/21 explosion with 11 points and 16 boards in another 31
minutes of playing time. Blair is picking it up just as Matt Bonner(notes) nears his return
from a broken hand, so we’ll have to see if he can keep it up and stop
Bonner from making a play for the starting gig. Antonio McDyess(notes) has
made it clear that he prefers life as a reserve.

    Boris Diaw(notes)
scored 26 points, hit four threes, grabbed 11 boards, and had two
blocked shots in 37 minutes against the Spurs. And there was much rejoicing.
He’s now scored in double-figures in three of the past four games,
posting averages of 16 points on 52-percent shooting, 2 threes, 8.5
boards, 5 assists, 1.8 turnovers, 0.8 steals, and 1.5 blocks.
Meanwhile, Raymond Felton(notes) has felt the squeeze – he had four points on
1-of-7 shooting Friday and has averaged 9.5 points over the past four
    games.

    • There were plenty of good numbers
to go around in the Bulls’ 121-119 win over the Wizards in double
    overtime. Derrick Rose(notes) delivered a big line (37 points, 9 boards, 6
assists) in a whopping 50 minutes of playing time to lead the Bulls,
while Antawn Jamison(notes) turned in his most complete line of the season (34
    points, 3 threes, 18 boards, 5 assists, 0 turnovers, 1 steal) in 55
minutes … And it was yet another 20-plus point effort from Randy
    Foye
    (notes),
who has now averaged 20.6 points, 1.4 threes, 4 boards, 7.8
assists, 1.8 turnovers, 1 steal, and 1 block in five games since
replacing Gilbert Arenas(notes) in the starting five.

    • Speaking of Arenas, his saga took its next step Friday, as he pled guilty
to a felony count of carry a pistol without a license. His sentencing
date is March 26, and there is no reason to expect his indefinite
suspension to be modified before that date, at least not for the
better. His plea deal with prosecutors means he probably won’t see more
than six months in jail, but the fact that his sentencing wasn’t
announced today makes it likely he’ll spend at least some time in jail.
In case it still needs to be said: it’s safe to drop him in re-draft leagues.

Kris Humphries(notes) saw 27 minutes of playing time in his second
game with the Nets (15 points, 8 boards, 2 steals, 1 block) and should
emerge as the sole backup big for the Nets, as Josh Boone(notes) and Tony
    Battie
    (notes)
are eliminated from the rotation. Deep-leaguers should take note
here, as his per-25 minute averages over the past four seasons include
    10 points, 7 boards, and 1.4 steals-plus-blocks and Yi Jianlian(notes) hasn’t
exactly been the picture of health during his three NBA seasons.

    Robin Lopez(notes) [game log]
has been a DNP-CD more often than not in recent weeks, but was
productive Friday (11 points, 6 board, 6 blocks) in his first extended
playing time of the season (31 minutes). Lopez limited Channing Frye’s(notes)
impact (21 minutes, 5 point, 1 three, 3 boards), but nobody should be
in panic mode, although it’s worth noting that Frye has totaled 16
points in the past three games.

    • Big games from Richard Hamilton(notes) (32 points, 10 assists, 7
    turnovers, 3 steals) and Ben Wallace(notes) (13 points, 21 boards, 5 assists,
1 turnover, 2 blocks) helped the Pistons best the Hornets in overtime,
110-104. Chris Paul(notes) put up another herculean effort (24 points, 2
threes, 5 boards, 14 assists, 3 turnovers, 4 steals) and got the usual
    from David West(notes) (25 points, 9 boards). Devin Brown’s(notes) slump reached a
new low (21 minutes, 0 points, 0-of-3 FG), while Marcus Thornton(notes) scored
in double figures for the fourth straight game (30 minutes, 13 points,
    2 threes, 5 boards, 2 steals).

    • It’s impossible to ignore the fact that Jose Calderon(notes) (26 minutes,
    21 points, 3 threes, 6 assists) outperformed Jarrett Jack(notes) (22 minutes,
10 points, 1 three, 1 assist) for the second consecutive game. For now,
Jay Triano appears satisfied with the current rotation, but that could change if this becomes more of a trend.

Chris Duhon(notes) is swooning once again, as he’s averaged 4.5 points on
23-percent shooting over the past four games. Shocking, I know.

    • Memphis went roughly nine players deep with useful fantasy lines Friday, thanks to the friendliest matchup around. The Timberwolves have allowed 110 points on average over the past 18 games.

    • While Kevin Durant’s(notes) overall numbers have improved as the season
has progressed, one area that has been working against his fantasy
impact is assists-to-turnovers. His Friday line was an exaggerated
version of the trend: 30 points, 4 threes, 14-of-16 FT, 13 boards, 0
assists, 8 turnovers, and 1 steal. As for his overall AST:TO ratio, it
was 3.5:3.7 in November, moved to 2.8:4.1 in December, and so far is
    2.1:5.1 in seven January games.

    • In two games since aggravating his right wrist injury, Dwyane Wade(notes)
has averaged 36 points on 64-percent shooting, 5 boards, 8.5 assists,
    4.5 turnovers, 3 steals, 0.5 blocks, and made 22 of 22 free throws …
Jermaine O’Neal(notes) followed up Wednesday’s season-high of 24 points with
his first double-double in nearly six weeks (32 minutes, 16 points, 13
    boards, 4 blocks).

Pau Gasol’s(notes) return was felt throughout the Lakers’ lineup, as the
team’s percentages were 50/46/83 in the 126-86 shellacking of the
Clippers. The Lakers had averaged 116 points in five games before Gasol
was hurt and 93 points in the six games that he missed … Andrew Bynum(notes)
averaged 19 points on 53-percent shooting, 11.8 boards, and 1.5 blocks
in Gasol’s absence, and went for 20/7/2 in the easy win over the Clips.
The Lakers and fantasy owners are anxiously waiting to see if he’s
headed for another downturn now that Gasol is back. Lamar Odom’s(notes) streak
of 11 games with at least 10 rebounds ended emphatically, as he barely
managed double figures in minutes (11 minutes, 7 points, 2 boards, 4
    fouls).

Chris Kaman’s(notes) back pain is/was significant enough that he’s had an epidural, the third of his career. He missed his third consecutive game Friday and his status for Saturday remains up in the air. DeAndre
    Jordan
    (notes)
has started the past three games in Kaman’s stead, averaging 13
points on 80-percent shooting, 7.7 boards, and 1.7 blocks in 29
    minutes.

    • The Warriors’ depth chart is so thin these days that Stephen Curry(notes) was allowed to stay in Friday’s game after having fouled out.
They started with only eight healthy players and lost Anthony Morrow(notes) to
injury, while Andris Biedrins(notes) and Chris Hunter(notes) has previously fouled
out. Both Monta Ellis(notes) and Curry played all 48 minutes, while Morrow lasted only four before leaving with a right knee sprain. He’s due to have an MRI on Saturday.

Jodie Meeks(notes) followed up 21 points in 31 minutes Wednesday with zero points and three fouls in 13 minutes Friday.

    • This just in: the Magic are struggling. Matt Barnes’(notes) -14 was the "best" number of any of the team’s starters in the 102-87 loss to the Blazers Friday. Rashard
    Lewis
    (notes)
and Jameer Nelson(notes) weren’t terrible offensively, but Vince Carter(notes)
was horrific in his return from a shoulder injury and Dwight Howard(notes)
attempted only seven shots and made three of 10 free throws. The team
has lost six of eight games and is desperate to get everyone healthy
    and on the same page.
The upcoming schedule is a mixed bag, with matchups with the Lakers,
Pacers, Kings, Bobcats, Grizzlies, Celtics and Hawks on tap for the
next two weeks. From a fantasy perspective, it’s basically "hold"
    situations all around.

    • What made the Blazers’ win over the Magic particularly impressive
was that they did it without Brandon Roy(notes), who was inactive because of a
    hamstring strain.
The team got good production from Andre Miller(notes) (19 points, 9 assists),
    Steve Blake(notes) (18 points, 4 threes, 6 assists), LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) (14
    points, 14 boards), and Martell Webster(notes) (24 points, 5 threes, 9
boards). Jarryd Bayless managed just one point in 20 minutes as the
starting shooting guard. Rudy Fernandez(notes) had 10 points in 18 minutes in
his second game since returning from back surgery.

    • Does Greg Oden(notes) have a shot to play this season? He hasn’t been officially ruled out yet, but I wouldn’t be rushing to the wire in the wake of this "news". It’s still a (very) long shot.

    Sundiata Gaines’(notes) game-winner
grabbed the headlines Thursday but the more relevant fantasy stories in the
Jazz’s win over the Cavs was that both Deron Williams(notes) and Andrei
    Kirilenko
    (notes)
    left the game
with injuries. Williams aggravated his right wrist injury, did not
practice Friday, and his immediate availability is unknown. AK was on
the court Friday, was feeling better than he was "supposed to be", and
thinks he’ll "probably" be able to give it a go on Saturday. Frustrated
Kirilienko owners should note that he was recently singled out by Jerry
Sloan as someone he’d like to get more minutes and touches for, so I
still recommend holding him in standard leagues.

    • The rough target
for Kevin Garnett’s(notes) return from his hyper-extended right knee is next
Friday, January 22. He’s resumed workouts and the team is hoping that
he’ll be ready to rejoin the active roster after a few practices,
including the day before that target … Rasheed Wallace(notes) is a strong possibility to return on Monday.

  • Averatec’s Lookie is medium power in a small package

Right now it’s Korea-only, but it’s Averatec’s Lookie laptop stuffs some decent power into its tiny chassis. Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 250GB HDD, Windows 7, HDMI port, and six hours of battery life. We’re a little bit light on the other details, but we’re assuming they fall in line with other thin-and-lights. At a touted 0.5 centimeters, this sucker’s thin — beat that, Adamo XPS — and pretty light at 1.4kg (just over 3lbs). The catch to all this — and of course there’s bound to be one — is the 799,000KRW price, which translates to about $711 locally.

  • Kuwait approves four-year development plan

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 14, 2010 (AFP) – Kuwait’s parliament gave its initial approval on Thursday to a four-year 129-billion-dollar (89-billion-euro) economic development plan.

The plan, the first since 1986, includes such mega projects as parts of a new business hub called Silk City and estimated to cost 77 billion dollars, a major container harbour and a 25-kilometre (16-mile) causeway.

It also includes a railway and metro system, new cities and additional spending on infrastructure, particularly in the health and education sectors.

The ultimate goal of the plan, which extends from the current fiscal year to 2013/2014, is to turn Kuwait into a regional trade and financial centre, said deputy premier for economic affairs Sheikh Ahmad Fahad al-Sabah.

The second and final vote is scheduled to take place after at least two weeks.

Sheikh Ahmad said the plan aims to boost the role of private business in the state-dominated economy in which the public sector controls almost three- quarters of the Gross Domestic Product.

The plan also stipulates increased spending in the oil sector, the country’s lifeline, to raise crude oil production capacity and modernise oil facilities.

The Gulf state has been vying to diversify its economy, in which oil revenues contribute about 94 percent of total state income.

Political bickering that has rocked Kuwait over the past few years has delayed many development projects, however.

Kuwait has amassed huge foreign assets in the past decade on the back of high oil prices. These assets are estimated at about 230 billion dollars and are mostly located abroad.

Kuwait, which says it holds 10 percent of global crude reserves, pumps about 2.2 million barrels per day.

    Written by Ramón Hernández Santos

    Saturday, 19 December 2009
