O Zimbra tinha sido adquirido pela Yahoo! em 2007 pelo valor de 350 milhões de dólares. A aquisição deste software irá permitir à VMWare a disponibilização e integração da solução nos seus serviços de cloud computing.

Psychology professor, two Fermilab employees earn rank as AAAS fellows

Professor in Psychology Susan Levine and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory employees Marge Bardeen and Patty McBride have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

They are among 531 AAAS members to be elevated this year by their peers to the rank of fellow. Individuals are recognized for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

Bardeen was elected to the AAAS section on education for “sustained, imaginative, and diverse contributions to the educational experience of K-12 teachers and students, including active engagement of teachers and students in research.”

McBride was cited for “important contributions to particle physics experiments and for her leadership in the international scientific community.” She was elected to the AAAS section on physics.

The University plays a major role in managing Fermilab under contract with the DOE through Fermi Research Alliance, LLC.

Levine, Professor in Psychology, was recognized for “fundamental work on cognitive development in the domains of language, mathematics and space, and the integration of neuropsychology with work on normative development.”

Levine, a specialist on early learning, has published on development and plasticity of spatial skills, early quantitative development, and language development and functional plasticity in children with early brain injury.

She co-directs the Center for Early Childhood Research and chairs the Psychology Department’s program on cognition and cognitive neuroscience.

New fellows will receive an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the AAAS fellows forum during the 2010 AAAS annual meeting in San Diego.

The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal, Science (sciencemag.org) as well as Science Translational Medicine (sciencetranslationalmedicine.org) and Science Signaling (sciencesignaling.org).

Founded in 1848, the association includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals.

We don’t often feature custom cars owned by individuals, but this 1975 Ford Ranchero is too good to pass up. One look at the massive rear tires or the dual nitrous bottles in the trunk will tell you that this isn’t your everyday sedan-based pickup.

You might initially think that the wood paneling along the side of the Ranchero, a feature of the Squire model, is the coolest part of the package, but wait until you get a look underneath the hood. Owner Mike Miller has swapped out the original Cleveland V8 with a 604ci V8 specially built by JBA Engines in San Diego, California that puts out 870 horsepower and 822 lb-ft torque on 91 octane. First Lady Michelle Obama is joining the movement to help Haitian earthquake victims.

“The images from Haiti are heartbreaking. Homes, hospitals and schools are destroyed. Families searching for loved ones, parents trying to feed their children, but we can all do something. We can help the American Red Cross as it delivers the food, water, and medicine that can save lives,” Mrs. O says in a new PSA released on Friday.

The First Lady explains that Americans can donate $10 to the relief efforts by texting HAITI to 90999 or by visiting www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS.

Bloops. Researchers have figured out how to crack 128-but UMTS 3G technology, thereby putting almost all modern phones in danger. The paper, found here basically describes a 2-hour process and is more a proof-of-concept than anything else. However, it could be used to listen to conversations after the fact.

Crunch Network: CrunchGear drool over the sexiest new gadgets and hardware.

Well….this is interesting. Despite being too dehydrated and exhausted to play a show Indiana last night, Lady Gaga made her O debut this morning. Appearing with the Queen of Talk on the weekly “Oprah Fridays Live from Chicago” show.

The “Bad Romance” hitmaker was scheduled to perform at Purdue University in Indiana but pulled out at the last minute after paramedics discovered her heart was beating irregularly. The show has been rescheduled for Jan. 26.

Oddly, Gaga made a speedy recovery and traveled to Chicago to sing live on Winfrey’s show. She displayed no signs of illness as she performed dressed in a spiked black outfit and swinging a gold spiked ball and chain.

UPDATE 8:10PM – There is obviously more to the story, many of these fees are being waved. I’m sifting through what information I can. There is some information on these donations on the Consumerist and Consumer Reports.

Perhaps you have seen this making the rounds on Facebook status updates:

Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.

It seems like a great idea, right? I’ve seen these before for other non-profits, namely various public radio fundraisers. It would seem like a great way to get people to donate. It’s fast and easy, allowing people to give precisely at the moment when their impulse to give is strongest. They don’t have to fire up their computer, find the website, fill out a form with their credit card, etc.

If you have an unlimited texting plan, and want to do this, go for it! But if you pay for each text message you send, keep reading before you donate.

I’m a skeptic by nature and when I see something like this, I become a little concerned. First off, you want to make sure it’s not a hoax. You want to make sure the money is actually going to where it should be and not that some radio station somewhere is getting 1000 texts an hour that say, “HAITI”. That seems unlikely since this meme has been picked up by the news media and by the White House.

The other thing that concerns me is whether the phone company keeps a percentage of the money donated and how much. If you donate to a charity using Master Card or Visa, a percentage of that (probably around 2%-3%) is skimmed off as a processing fee. Is that what is happening? According to snopes.com, it is not:

Callers should note that the $10 donations will be charged to their cell phone bills… It is not true that phone companies keep half the monies donated in this manner — the full amount of each $10 donation is passed through to the Red Cross for Haitian relief.

So that is good news.

However, for some people there could be a big processing cost. Why? Because “Msg&Data rates may apply.” When I donated today using this method, the entire transaction took seven texts:

I have an unlimited texting plan, so it didn’t cost me anything extra to give that $10. For me, it’s probably the most efficient way for me to give. If I were to use a credit card on a website, a small part of that $10 donation would be eaten in fees.

However, if I didn’t have a texting plan, the effective processing fee would be enormous. On a basic Verizon plan, text messages cost $0.20 for both sent and received messages. It would have cost me an additional $1.40 to give $10. This is effectively a processing fee of 12.3%, much higher than a credit card. Notice too that if you don’t stop the texts you will get 4 more messages a month, with more text charges.

If you are going to be charged extra for these texts, I highly recommend that instead you go directly to the Red Cross site and donate there. I wonder also if it would be possible to get some figures about just how much the cell phone companies are making off this and if pressure could be brought to bear on them to donate all extra fees they collect as well.

In consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., is voluntarily recalling certain lots of OTC products in the Americas, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Fiji.

ALL RECALLED PRODUCTS ARE LISTED BELOW.

The company is initiating this recall following an investigation of consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that, in a small number of cases, was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events.

These include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. This precautionary action is voluntary and has been taken in consultation with the FDA.

Based on this investigation, McNeil Consumer Healthcare has determined that the reported uncharacteristic smell is caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA).

This can result from the breakdown of a chemical that is sometimes applied to wood that is used to build wood pallets that transport and store product packaging materials. The health effects of this chemical have not been well studied but no serious events have been documented in the medical literature.

A small number of the product lots being recalled were associated with the complaints of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor, and some of these lots were found to contain trace amounts of TBA.

In December 2009, McNeil Consumer Healthcare also recalled all lots of TYLENOL® Arthritis Pain 100 count with EZ-OPEN CAP related to this issue.  McNeil Consumer Healthcare has now applied broader criteria to identify and remove all product lots that it believes may have the potential to be affected, even if they have not been the subject of consumer complaints.

In addition to the product recall, McNeil Consumer Healthcare is continuing their investigation into this issue and is taking further actions that include ceasing shipment of products produced using materials shipped on these wood pallets and requiring suppliers who ship materials to our plants to discontinue the use of these pallets.

We will continue to closely monitor and evaluate the situation and consult with the FDA.

Consumers who purchased product from the lots included in this recall should stop using the product and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement.

For these instructions or information regarding how to return or dispose of the product, consumers should log on to the internet at mcneilproductrecall.com or call 1-888-222-6036 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time).

Consumers who have medical concerns or questions should contact their healthcare provider.

Any adverse reactions may also be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Program by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178, by mail at MedWatch, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787, or on the MedWatch website at fda.gov/medwatch.

The affected product lot numbers for the recalled products can be found on the side of the bottle label.

If you’re a fan of The Food Networks Iron Chef then you definitely need to tune in this Sunday (Jan. 17th, 9pm EST) because newly designated Iron Chef Jose Garces is going to be up against some big talent. This is Jose’s first debut as Iron Chef on Iron Chef America where he’ll compete to hold his title.

I was given the opportunity to interview him but couldn’t attend the conference call. His publicist was kind of enough to ask my questions. These included questions about his start as a chef, his influences, and signature dishes. His Latin background is his biggest influence and is what he has become known for. Aside from earning the title of Iron Chef, he is also a successful Restaurant owner. In Philadelphia he owns five hot spots and one restaurant in Chicago.

For this post I’ve included the recipe for one of his signature dishes:

Mexican Esquites

This is a traditional Mexican corn dish that goes great with tacos.

Ingredients:

* 1 Medium onion, small dice
* 8 Cups corn kernels off the cobb
* 4 Cups corn stock (recipe follows)
* 4 Oz. Butter
* Epazote, a fresh Mexican herb *
* Garnish
* Lime Mayonnaise (recipe follows)
* Queso Fresco *
* Chili Piquin *
* can all be found in any of the Mexican/Latin markets in South Philly

Directions:

1. Sweat diced onions in butter. Add corn kernels and cook until soft (About 15 minutes). Add corn stock and simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes, leaving some liquid. Season with salt to taste. Fold in epazote. Serve warm in large bowl. Top with a light layer of Lime Mayonnaise, crumbled Queso Fresco and a gentle shake of Chile Piquin.
2. Corn Stock
3. 6 corn cobs, kernels removed
4. 1 medium onion, sliced thin
5. 3 cloves garlic, crushed
6. 2 tbs olive oil
7. 4 quarts water
8. Salt to taste
9. Gently sweat onions and garlic in olive oil until very soft. Add corn cobs and water and cook until stock is very fragrant and flavorful, about one hour. Strain to remove cobs and onion and season to taste with salt.
10. Lime Mayonnaise
11. 1 cup prepared mayonnaise
12. 1/8 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
13. Salt to taste
14. Combine mayonnaise and lime juice in a small bowl and mix well. Season to taste with salt.

Interview w/ Iron Chef Jose Garces

The Japanese equivalent of the SEMA show, the Tokyo Auto Salon, is going on right now and Toyota has unveiled its new FT-86 G Sports Concept, a vehicle that hints at the aftermarket modifications that will be available on the Japanese automaker’s new rear-wheel-drive sports car.

The Toyota FT-86 G Sports concept will also be featured in the upcoming (said to be delayed) Gran Turismo 5. Toyota says that the concept also debuts the ”G Sports” badge, which Toyota plans to use  in a series of cars modified by Gazoo Racing to be released only in Japan.

Besides the aggressive modifications you see made to the Toyota FT-86 here, no technical or performance details were released.

If you follow the news even vaguely, then you’ve heard about Google’s announcement that it may exit the Chinese market in response to hacker attacks originating in China that sought to access the private information of human rights advocates. I’ve argued that whether Google stays or not, such attacks aren’t likely to stop. So I don’t really see what Google expects to gain from leaving now, as opposed to months or years ago. But today a new wrinkle emerges: the attacks occurred as a result of an unknown flaw in Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Here’s the news blurb, via PCWorld:

Microsoft Security Response Center director Mike Reavey said in an e-mailed statement “This afternoon, Microsoft issued Security Advisory 979352 to help customers mitigate a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in Internet Explorer. The company has determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks targeted against Google and other corporate networks.”

Am I the only one that finds this an interesting plot twist? Microsoft provided the window through which the Chinese hackers crawled through. A few thoughts about this:

First, what is Google doing using Internet Explorer? Shouldn’t it be running its own Google Chrome browser instead? Or at least Mozilla Firefox?

Maybe the excuse here is that it’s impossible for a software company like Google to entirely avoid using Internet Explorer. After all, if it wants to produce browser-agnostic software, then it needs to test its systems in all varieties. So it probably can’t avoid IE altogether, but I wonder if it’s planning to use it even less now, particularly for its external Internet usage unreleated to product testing.

Second, this story is another blow for Internet Explorer. The Google-China spat is big news right now, and this thrusts Microsoft in the center of it. As I mentioned a few months ago, IE is already beginning to give up small chunks of its market share each month to other browsers like Firefox and Chrome. Could this push firms affected by the Chinese attack to also begin exploring other browser alternatives? Will the rest of the Internet-using public take notice?

If Google really wants to live its “don’t be evil” mantra, then it might consider starting an antivirus unit of its own, and/or developing its Chrome browser to be virus proof. In my opinion, other than physical violence, there are few things more evil than computer viruses. They plague unsuspecting Internet users and lead to stolen identities, invasions of privacy, stolen property and incredible inconvenience.

I consider computer viruses technological weapons of mass destruction, and the hackers who create them terrorists. As these foreign-based attacks continue to become more common, the U.S. might want to consider putting more of its defense budget towards preventing them. I don’t begin to doubt that millions of dollars are lost each year because of virus attacks. Eventually that tally will reach the billions, if it hasn’t already.

Remember the good ol’ days of being a cell phone owner? Back when you could probably name every color your screen could display, 2G data connections were mind blowing, and gettin’ your firmware flashed meant taking a trip to the good ol’ neighborhood carrier outlet? Yeah – we’re back to that.

Sprint’s making a throw back to that last practice of yesteryear, with the release of a firmware update for the Samsung Moment. Awesome! Everyone loves new software! Here’s the catch: you can only get the update if you’re willing to cruise on over to a Sprint store and get your handset flashed manually.

What’s that you say? Android is supposed to be capable of over-the-air updates? Yeah, you’re right. It could be that part of this specific upgrade just doesn’t play friendly with the OTA system, or it could be that Sprint isn’t armed with the infrastructure to get it done for this specific handset; whatever the reason, I’d be willing to bet it isn’t something that Sprint is happy about.

The new update brings AGPS improvements (allowing in-door positioning), updates to a handful of the built-in Sprint apps, a few little bug fixes, and an increase in battery performance. If all that sounds worthwhile to you (the battery performance improvement would sell me on it all by itself), head on over to the nearest Sprint store. Be sure to tell them to read MobileCrunch (and send us pictures of fun new stuff!) while you’re there.

For mega multinational behemoths like Intel, the economy is really starting to get good again.

But for the little guy, not so much.

Today’s chart comes from the National Federation of Independent Businesses and it shows the (dis-)connection between small business expectations and reality. As you can see, the two tracked pretty nicely on the way down.

But last year, small business optimism started to spike in the shape of a “V,” perhaps buoyed by the ra-ra optimism of the media and the rebounding stock market. But the reality has been far worse, and the gap between reality and results is gigantic.

Flying high, NASA style!

One of the space agency’s employees seems to have been inspired by the space shuttle’s soaring trajectory. A baggie containing a small amount of white powder residue, later found to be cocaine, was found at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Way to go, NASA-employee-doing-coke-on-premises. You have forever altered our image of clean-cut astronauts standing around in space suits, chatting with diligent rocket scientists. But NASA is not so amused.

According to CNN, Bob Cabana, the director of Kennedy Space Center, issued a terse statement that read in part:

“This is a rare and isolated incident, and I’m disappointed that it happened, but it should not detract from the outstanding work that is being done by a dedicated team on a daily basis.”

About 200 employees and contractors have access to the restricted hangar where the drug was found, and they’re now being being tested for the drug. For NASA, the incident is not just a blow to its image–the drug’s presence in a restricted area also raises questions about the work done by NASA’s elite workers. The hangar is being used to prepare for space shuttle Discovery’s launch, which is scheduled for this March.

The Internet, meanwhile, is tittering with amusement, with one reader commenting on a news article: “There’s just so much coke in Florida, this bit probably just settled there, like pollen or something. Although! I think it makes for a great new sitcom idea. Miami Vice, Interstellar Unit!”
