  • Microsoft warns of IE bug used in Chinese attacks on Google

Microsoft has issued Security Advisory (979352) after its own investigations into the highly-organized hacking attack in late December, the one that Google earlier this week attributed to China, led the software giant to conclude that a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in Internet Explorer was used by the perpetrators.

“The company has determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks targeted against Google and other corporate networks,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars. “Microsoft continues to work with Google, other industry partners and authorities to actively investigate this issue. To date, Microsoft has not seen widespread customer impact, rather only targeted and limited attacks exploiting IE6.”

While Microsoft says it is only aware of limited, active attacks attempting to use this vulnerability in IE6, and has not seen attacks against other versions of IE, the vulnerability is not limited to version 6, according to the security advisory. Internet Explorer 5.01 on Windows 2000 SP4 is not affected, but IE6 on Windows 2000 SP4, as well as IE6, IE7 and IE8 on supported editions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 are all affected.

“The vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference within Internet Explorer,” the advisory reads. “It is possible under certain conditions for the invalid pointer to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution.”

Microsoft did not give any workarounds for the flaw in the security advisory, but it did list five mitigating factors:

    • Protected Mode in IE7 on Windows Vista limits the impact of the vulnerability.
    • In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker could host a webpage that is used to exploit this vulnerability or do so via a webpage that accepts or hosts user-provided content or advertisements. In all cases, however, an attacker would have no way to force users to visit these websites and would have to convince them to do so, which is typically achieved via an e-mail or instant message.
    • By default, Internet Explorer on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 runs in a restricted mode that is known as Enhanced Security Configuration. This mode sets the security level for the Internet zone to High and so is a mitigating factor for websites that you have not added to the Internet Explorer Trusted sites zone.
    • An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.
    • By default, all supported versions of Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail open HTML e-mail messages in the Restricted sites zone, which should mitigate attacks trying to exploit this vulnerability by preventing Active Scripting and ActiveX controls from being used. However, if a user clicks a link in an e-mail message, the user could still be vulnerable to exploitation of this vulnerability through the Web-based attack scenario.

Microsoft says it will continue to monitor the situation and will either post a patch on Patch Tuesday or will release an out-of-cycle security update. We will keep you posted when Microsoft does release an update.

  • New Machine From San Diego’s Illumina Intensifies Race for Faster, Cheaper Genome Decoder

    ilmn
    Denise Gellene wrote:

The cost of sequencing a person’s genome continues to fall. Illumina this week introduced a machine that can sequence an individual’s genome for under $10,000. That is one percent of the $1 million it cost to decode a human genome three years ago.

The announcement pushes San Diego-based Illumina to the forefront in an intense race to develop faster and cheaper genome-decoding equipment. The next-cheapest technology costs five times more.

Illumina, which unveiled its HiSeq 2000 at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, clearly believes the machine will establish its leadership in the gene-sequencing category. “Other companies are talking about future products, but we’re talking about products that are going to ship next month,” CEO Jay Flatley told Forbes.

Illumina says its first customer is BGI, formerly known as the Bejing Genomics Institute, which has ordered 128 of the new gene-sequencers for its new genome center in Hong Kong. The HiSeq 2000, which can sequence two genomes simultaneously, is priced at $690,000. Flatley said during Illumina’s R&D Day presentation today that the purchase will make BGI the world’s largest genome center. In a statement issued by Illumina, BGI’s president says it is focused on using genetic analysis to enhance agriculture and food production and to develop the personal genomics field in China.

It will be interesting to see how the competition shapes up from here. Complete Genomics of Mountain View, CA, which Luke profiled in 2008, has a stated goal of sequencing individual genomes for $5,000 each. It has a different business model from Illumina. Rather than selling sequencing machines, Complete Genomics does the genome decoding in-house and sends clients the results. Last November, the company published a “proof of principle” in the journal Science that demonstrated it could sequence and analyze a person’s genome for $8,005 to $1,726.

Another competitor is Helicos Biosciences of Cambridge, MA, which announced last year that it had sequenced the genome of one of its founders for $50,000. That is about the same price Illumina set last August for its sequencing service aimed at consumers.

Cheaper sequencing will enable more researchers to examine genomes from large numbers of individuals for differences linked to health risks or disease. Some believe that the information will lead to personalized medical care, based on an individual’s genetic information. No one knows how low the cost of genome sequencing can go. But it’s probably fair to say we haven’t seen the bottom.

  • Moms May Have Lower Blood Pressure

Yes, you read the headline correctly. New research has shown that parents, particularly mothers, have lower blood pressure than people who aren’t parents. Plus, blood pressure wasn’t affected by the number of kids or the ages of kids. So, two-year-old or 16-year-old, it’s all the same when it comes to blood pressure.

Are you surprised? Me too, a bit.

Yet, this is one of those “how interesting” studies. No doctor is going to tell you to have a kid to lower your blood pressure! You can do that with exercise and a diet low in sodium.

    mother-bp

“This doesn’t mean the more kids you have, the better your blood pressure,” said Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a Brigham Young University psychologist who studies relationships and health. She said that the findings are linked with parenthood only, not the number of children or employment status.

According to Holt-Lunstad, even though caring for children can be stressful, deriving a sense of meaning and purpose from that stress is associated with better health. However, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why parents were found to have lower blood pressure. It could be a biological or social response.

The study involved 198 adults who wore portable blood pressure monitors for 24 hours. The age range of participants was 20 to 68 years, and 70% had children.

Through statistical analysis, researchers were able to account for other factors known to influence blood pressure: age, body mass, gender, exercise, employment and smoking. They zeroed in on the relationship between parenthood and blood pressure, and found it to be positive.

Overall, the 24-hour blood pressure readings for parents averaged 116 / 71. That’s 4.5 points lower than non-parents for systolic blood pressure (the first number). And it’s 3 points lower than non-parents in diastolic blood pressure. The difference is statistically significant. The findings were reported in journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Why do you think parents in this study were found to have lower blood pressure than non-parents?

  • Global Warmists Feel a Chilly Wind by Tom Bethell, Spectator.org

    Article Tags: Tom Bethell, Wikipedia

Two weeks ago I wrote an article here about global warming and the advocates — call them warmists — who tamper with Wikipedia to reflect their own biases. One warmist named William Connolley, a green ideologue in Britain, had rewritten 5,428 climate articles. His goal was to bring the articles into line with Green Party dogma.

A number of people responded, some taking the position that Wikipedia is a waste of time so why bother with it? But that is not satisfactory. Here is a better response, from Howard Hayden, a friend of mine. He puts out The Energy Advocate, a newsletter that raises many doubts about global warming and related energy issues. “Wiki is a great source of non-controversial information,” he told me. “It’s a shame it has been hijacked by true believers.”

I agree. I find Wikipedia useful and I do use it. But I avoid it where science and controversy interact — global warming, biodiversity, intelligent design, and a few other issues. There, Wiki cannot be relied upon. Political activists have enough time on their hands to make changes that suit their tastes.

Just bumped an old photo thread I had, so decided I may as well get more exposure by posting them here in the UK and Ireland section too.

I live in Dublin’s burbs, and for me the city centre is very much an uncared for, car-ridden and gritty place I rarely visit. The lack of care, appreciation and vision shown to the city really is disconcerting for any history or architecture enthusiasts. However, behind the traffic, grit and horrible shop fronts lay some hidden delights worth taking shots of.

  • Microsoft: “Don’t Be Evil” Is Google’s Motto, Not Ours [Digital Daily]

imagesMicrosoft sees no need for a “new approach to China,” though rival Google has adopted one that has generated quite a response. In an interview with CNBC today, CEO Steve Ballmer said his company has no plans to cease operations in China or take a moral stand on the Chinese government’s attitude toward free speech. Said Ballmer: “We’ve been quite clear that we are going to operate in China [and] we’re going to abide by the law.”

Asked earlier in the day by Reuters if Microsoft (MSFT) had plans to pull its business out of China, Ballmer answered, “No….I don’t understand how that helps anything. I don’t understand how that helps us and I don’t understand how that helps China.”

Of course, Microsoft has quite a bit more at stake in China than Google (GOOG)–all those pirated copies of Windows, for example.

  • Google in China: Ex-Microsoft VP Kai-Fu Lee’s Past Report Might Point to What Went Wrong

    Google
    Gregory T. Huang wrote:

In the fascinating maelstrom that is Google in China, one thing is clear: this affects all of us. It’s not about whether Google’s decision to draw a line in the sand is based on ideals versus profits. It’s not about whether the Chinese government will open up its Internet policies and play ball with the rest of the world. It’s about the future of every company on the Web—including Microsoft, Amazon, RealNetworks, and all the smaller companies out there.

In case you haven’t been following every twist and turn, earlier this week Google said it might pull out of China following its investigation of a cyber attack that it says originated in China, targeting at least 20 large companies (including Google). One apparent goal of the attacks was to access the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Google said it is “no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”

Google’s statement is very carefully worded. It doesn’t explicitly accuse Chinese officials of any wrongdoing. But the reactions of a lot of people, from the media to tech-business leaders to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have helped portray the situation as a cut and dried “Google (and freedom of information) vs. China (and censorship)” issue.

I want to tackle one piece of this sprawling puzzle. And that is the huge, ongoing cultural challenge that Google, Microsoft, and other western companies face in setting up business operations in China. No, this is not a new issue. But one part of the Google announcement was particularly telling: “We want to make clear that this move was driven by our executives in the United States, without the knowledge or involvement of our employees in China who have worked incredibly hard to make Google.cn the success it is today.”

Google has now been up and running in China for four years. That is not a lot of time to build deep relationships. And it certainly doesn’t help that Google’s biggest competitor in China, Baidu, is backed by the Chinese government.

Heading up Google’s China effort until recently was Kai-Fu Lee, the controversial ex-Microsoft vice president who founded Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing in 1998. Lee, a Chinese high-tech celebrity and education leader, was head of Google China from 2006 until last September, when he left the company to create an incubator in Beijing for Chinese high-tech startups.

In my view, it may not be a coincidence that the current situation has come about so soon after Lee’s departure. Frankly, I’m surprised this all didn’t come to a head much sooner for Google. But perhaps it was through Lee’s efforts that it didn’t—or maybe, conversely, it’s part of why Lee left Google. (I’ve pinged him for comment, but haven’t heard back on this topic.)

Which brings me to some analysis. Back in 2003, while he was at Microsoft, …Next Page »
