    ‘A Saudi scholar says Riyadh’s
allegation that ‘Iran is meddling in Yemen’s domestic affairs’ is part
of a US conspiracy against the Islamic Republic.

Ali Al-Ahmed, the founder and director
of an independent think-tank in Washington told Press TV that Saudi
Arabia follows the United States’ policy and fuels the West “anti-Iran

  • Now We Know Why MediaMemo’s Kafka Looks So Familiar [BoomTown]

Big kisses to the boys–and they are all boys–over at Endgadget, who finally helped BoomTown, via the magic of Photoshop, to finally come up with the right nickname for All Things Digital blogger-reporter Peter Kafka.

Super Mario, of course, a moniker that somehow seems perfect for the fast-moving, quick-talking and speed-scooping MediaMemo writer.

Here’s the lovely picture they ginned up–in honor of a deal struck with Nintendo Wii–from the ATD event in Las Vegas last week at the Consumer Electronics Show, where Peter interviewed Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings.

Oddly, the Super Mario video game head on his body works unusually well:

And here is the video of Peter’s actual interview with Hastings in its entirety:

  • 1940’s Secret ‘Corporate’ Tactic By Which Government Took All!

‘Many people have asked for a simple explanation as to the intent behind the CAFR and what happened over the decades? Well, in a nut shell here is the foundation block that allowed government to take it all over by investment. It started in the mid 40’s and grew into what we have in government now seventy years latter come 2009.

    Government started out as
a “pay as you go” structure. By transforming into a corporate liability
company over the decades, this gave them the ability to use “advance
projections” to strip annual operating funds and create advance forward
liability accounts whereby in doing so they were able to by stealth
build numerous “wealth bases” of equity in many designated fund
balances separate from the budget reports that were exclusively
    presented for public viewing.’

A flurry of financing deals made it a good week for San Diego’s life sciences industry. Get the highlights here.

VentiRx Pharmaceuticals, which is working on drugs for allergies and cancer, raised additional funds of $25 million, bringing the total received in its Series A round to $51.6million. The company is based in San Diego and Seattle.

Tandem Diabetes Care, a San Diego-based company developing insulin pumps for diabetics, has raised $52.3 million in a round of equity financing that began last May. Venture-based Tandem hasn’t revealed much about its new pumps. The company’s website says the equipment will enable diabetics to remain active.

—Bruce had an interesting chat with Keith Murphy, CEO of Organovo, a San Diego-based startup using modified inkjet printer technology to build human tissue from living cells. Murphy says the company’s ultimate goal is to build livers, kidneys and other vital organs for transplant patients, but immediate plans call for engineering blood vessel grafts for patients with peripheral artery disease.

—Genzyme (NASDAQ: GENZ) entered into a “mutual cooperation agreement” with San Diego-based Relational Investors, a $6 billion activist investment fund and owner of about 4 percent of Genzyme stock. Late last year, Relational co-founder Ralph Whitworth began to publicly call for changes at the Cambridge, MA-based biotech. Although Whitworth praised Genzyme’s appointment of former Schering-Plough executive Robert J. Bertolini to its board in early December, he called for “significant further improvements” in the board’s composition.

—San Diego-based Quidel (NASDAQ: QDEL) which makes medical diagnostic tests used at the point-of-care, is paying $130 million in cash to acquire Athens, OH-based Diagnostic Hybrids, a privately held maker of medical diagnostic tests for hospitals and laboratories.

  • Tesla to Use High-Energy Batteries from Panasonic

Technology Review reports that Tesla are partnering with Panasonic to supply long life lithium ion batteries – Tesla to Use High-Energy Batteries from Panasonic.

Tesla Motors, the maker of high-performance electric vehicles, is working with Panasonic, the battery and consumer electronics giant, to develop its next generation of batteries. The partnership is intended to help Tesla lower the cost of its batteries and improve the range of its vehicles.

Last month Panasonic announced two high-energy batteries for electric vehicles. These new batteries store as much as 30 percent more energy than its previous lithium-ion batteries, and this increased storage could, in theory, increase a vehicle’s range by a similar amount, thereby addressing one of the main problems with electric cars. Tesla’s Roadster currently has a range of 244 miles and takes three and a half hours to charge with a special charger.

The other major challenge with electric vehicles is the cost of the battery packs. Tesla isn’t announcing the potential cost savings with future batteries, but JB Straubel, Tesla Motor’s chief technology officer, says battery costs have been steadily declining at about 8 percent a year.

Tesla plans to incorporate Panasonic’s cells into its battery packs, and will work with Panasonic to develop cells fine-tuned for use in cars, Straubel says. To do this, Tesla will draw on data gathered from the 1,000 cars it has made so far, which have been driven for over a million miles. Tesla currently gets its batteries from a variety of manufacturers.

  • MUST READ: A Demonstration that Global Warming Predictions are Based More On Faith than On Science

    Article Tags: Roy Spencer

    article image

I’m always searching for better and simpler ways to explain the reason why I believe climate researchers have overestimated the sensitivity of our climate system to increasing carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.

What follows is a somewhat different take than I’ve used in the past. In the following cartoon, I’ve illustrated 2 different ways to interpret a hypothetical (but realistic) set of satellite observations that indicate (1) warming of 1 degree C in global average temperature, accompanied by (2) an increase of 1 Watt per sq. meter of extra radiant energy lost by the Earth to space.

  • [Kraków] Podziemny Dworzec Główny

    Quote:

Połączy je sieć ruchomych schodów i wind.

Do każdego punktu podróżni łatwo trafią dzięki wyraźnemu oznakowaniu – mówi Michał Wrzosek, rzecznik PKP S.A.

Dziś straszą rdzą i wyblakłą żółcią blachy.

Krakowski dworzec to jeden z trzech "szczęściarzy". Poza Krakowem, Gdańsk i Wrocław. Koszt przebudowy Dworca Głównego w stolicy Małopolski to 120 mln zł, 83 mln da UE.

  • MacBook Pro with Intel Core i5 processor revealed via Intel promo flier?

Far be it for us to argue with order of operations, but an apparent Intel Retail Edge Program promotional email has revealed a contest where those who pass this month’s training can win one of two MacBook Pros with Intel Core i5 processors inside. Only catch is, that’s a model that doesn’t yet exist — whoops! Don’t know how long the company expects those winners to wait, but we’ve gone ahead and kept our calendars clear for the end of the month, just in case Apple feels the urge to send out any last-minute press conference invites.
